The KC Chiefs are having a very rough day.

    @Maude: I can’t believe they haven’t canceled Sunday’s game yet.

    Who are the Eers?

I think that’s Tunch’s team — he often posts here under the pseudonym John Cole.

    Amir Khalid says:

There’s a very strange match going on right now in the English Premier League. Reading led twice against table toppers Manchester United and are currently down 3 – 4 early in the second half. Not so much brilliant forward play as shit defending from both teams, especially the supposedly far superior United.

  8. 8
    Maude says:

They probably haven’t made the decision yet. There are contracts and tickets and all that to consider. The players might still want to play. It might be better to get some fan support for the team for a game.
This was a murder suicide and that’s a really awful thing for the team. The coaches must be devastated.

    Ted & Hellen says:

    Go Jayhawks, beat WVU.

(Not likely, but thought I’d root for my old school.) :D

    I can’t believe they haven’t canceled Sunday’s game yet.

    Empty gesture.

I’m not sure cancelling a multi million dollar event which 80,000 people and more have planned their weekend around, is a necessary thing.

Why not just have a moment of silence?

  11. 11
    AnotherBruce says:

@Maude: The Head Coach and the General Manager, Romeo Crennel and Scott Pioli were both there when he pulled the suicide trigger. It happened right as the police showed up.

God stuff like this is just so crushing.

  12. 12
    Amir Khalid says:

I’d have thought that a traumatic event like this would be an automatic cancellation. If I were a Chiefs player, I wouldn’t be in the right frame of mind for a game. And if I were a fan, I’d be in no mood for it either.

  13. 13
    Maude says:

I would never get over it.
Also in Wyoming, the guy who killed two then himself.
For the KC Chiefs, there’s no comfort.

  14. 14
    Maude says:

    @Amir Khalid:
The fans have planned on going to the game. Nothing is going to change what happened. Sometimes it is best to keep going after a tragedy.

I think Miami should be fined for a poor effort against the Spurs second team. Aren’t the guys on the court supposed to play their best?

  16. 16
    👽 Martin says:

Well, I’m not getting my hair cut any time soon. My barber is a huge Chiefs fan and was already upset enough by their season.

It’s always tragic. I’ve dealt with 3 suicides this year – 2 being coworkers. Didn’t see either of those coming. It knocks you out of body for about a week.

  17. 17
    Amir Khalid says:

A year or so ago, a football match in the German Bundesliga (the top division) was called off after the match referee had attempted suicide in his hotel room. A sporting event, even if it involves the weekend plans of tens of thousands of fans, is surely not more important than the great tragedy that has happened here. Cancelling the match won’t bring back Belcher or the mother of his child, but it feels wrong to me to carry on as though the football were the most important thing here.
ETA: I think Martin #16 explains why cancelling the match is the right thing to do.

  18. 18
    MikeJ says:

@👽 Martin: You work at Foxconn?

  19. 19
    JPL says:

Should the fans decide whether or not the team play? I don’t think so. The coaches witnessed something, they can’t get over and shouldn’t need to prepare a team to play. The NFL needs to step it up and make the decision for folks who not thinking straight. The Panthers are on the way but they can also just fly back to Carolina.

also, too nbc sports is saying the Kansas City mayor wants them to play. Maybe he should suit up.

  20. 20
    👽 Martin says:

@MikeJ: Foxconn doesn’t have 1/50th the suicide rate as the US educational system.

Please let A. Murray be accurate today. Hunker down DAWGS!

  25. 25
    Raven says:

@huckster: Our O line is the key.

  26. 26
    JPL says:

@Raven: I hope that a few Bama players are nervous nellies.
I’m about ready to chop down some trees. When I first moved to GA, leaves were down around Halloween. Now I’m lucky if they have fallen by Thanksgiving. I figure I have another week because of a lovely oak tree.

  27. 27
    Evolving Deep Southerner says:

@Raven: Hell yes. If Murray’s on, and the O-Line can hold, we can win this God damn game. Whoever wins will beat the Irish like people used to beat their children.

  28. 28
    huckster says:

@Raven: I know, I was Columbia in October, I don’t think I can stand to see that happen again.

Yay Stanford, goin’ to the Rose Bowl!

and (Andrew) Luck had nothing to do with it.

John Elway didn’t go, Bill Walsh didn’t go, Luck didn’t go, but Coach Shaw and freshman QB Kevin Hogan are headed to Pasadena for New Year’s. Yay!

never in my life did I think Stanford would get 3 BCS bowl games in a row.

  31. 31

@huckster: Whew, that may have been the best thing that could have happened to us.

  32. 32
    Raven says:

“Little people can’t block big people,” Grantham said. “When you have big people, you don’t have to commit all your defensive backs to the run game. You can play what I call a seven-and-a-half-man box. You got the extra half guy in the secondary because your guys up front can seal off gaps and hold the point.

Watching the Sooners pissing around instead of putting away the horny toads drove me to atomic silliness.

By time time they won it was too late.

    CaseyL says:

Sorry about this, but I’m taking advantage of the Open Thread to let the Seattle BJers know I’m going to be a bit late to tonight’s meetup. A dear friend is in the hospital with total kidney failure, and he’d rather I stopped by after his daily dialysis rather than during. I likely won’t make it to the meetup before 8:30, and possibly later than that :(

Roll Tide! No one but a die hard Irish fan thinks ND has a snowball’s chance against either of these teams.

    6-6 record? Check.

    aspasia says:

In re first post: some of us out here are NOT bored by the prospect of the Big Ten championship game, no matter how hard ESPN has worked to ignore the conference.

  44. 44
    madmommy says:

Yeah, I know. But ND just did not look that good to me in their last game. They don’t play as tough a schedule either. Of course this is only my opinion, and you know what they say about opinions :)

  45. 45
    Mr Stagger Lee says:

On one hand I and tired of the SEC pwning the BCS(playoffs NOW!!) but with big media’s overt flogging of Notre Dame. I will either ROLL TIDE or Go Dawgs in the BCS championship. Oh BTW, that was a weird scene in Columbus, last week, Jim Tressel being cheered, yet he was responsible for the Buckeyes not even being considered for the BCS,they are on probation. Oh BTW(part two) Tressel is being considered for the Tennessee job

  46. 46
    Mr Stagger Lee says:

@Mr Stagger Lee: Yikes, That first sentence should have read

On one hand I am tired of the SEC pwning the BCS (PLAYOFFS NOW!!!)

And I thought we were playing Alabama and not Auburn. Cheapshot motherfucker.

  53. 53
    madmommy says:

Completely agree-no call for that sort of play at alll! Glad the QB walked away from it.

  54. 54
    Evolving Deep Southerner says:

@Raven: @Raven: I really am reluctant to whine about “roughness”-type penalties, but that no-call was grievous. I’m glad it’s dominating the halftime chat.

Shite. Two atrocious misses by Donovan and Magee, and Houston makes LA pay.

  56. 56

  57. 57

  65. 65
    Hill Dweller says:

Alabama’s special teams have been awful. The got a delay of game penalty on their fake punt; blew the coverage/missed the eligible receiver on Georgia’s fake punt; and gave up a blocked field goal.

Also too, their heralded O-line hasn’t been able to consistently pass protect thus far.

  66. 66
    John O says:

Hats off to that AL drive. Ran it pretty much up GA’s asses.

Go Dwags. I’m tired of AL.

  67. 67
    Felonius Monk says:

I’m sure that now that the Mountaineers have kinda humiliated Kansas, our dear Mr. Cole has gone back to sleep. Pleasant dreams, John.

  68. 68
    Felonius Monk says:

@Raven: Hell, I’ll be supportive too.

Go Dawgs — Win One for the Raven!

  69. 69
    Raven says:

@Hill Dweller: Yea and they really need that pass protection don’t they?

  70. 70
    John O says:

AL is running it up GA’s ass and it’s up to GA to get their hands dirty gettin’ it out.

  71. 71
    JPL says:

I’m pretty sick of these bama players that think they are a bowling bowl.. They are still losing though.

    also, too.. maybe not losing

  72. 72

Georgia defense just cannot tackle. Alabama’s RBs are pushing them five yards or more after contact.

  73. 73
    Mary says:

Georgia’s mascot is an abomination of dogdom and whoever bred him should be jailed for animal cruelty.

Like the Packers in the ’60 title game, the Bulldogs didn’t lose- they just ran out of time.

  80. 80
    Raven says:

@Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again): With all the yardage on the ground by Bama I’m still awfully proud of them Dawgs.

  81. 81
    Mr Stagger Lee says:

@Raven: Thanks! Georgia played there hearts out, no shame in their loss.

  82. 82
    Raven says:

“If you love anything about competitive sports, anything at all, you had to love this game. “That was a great football game by both teams, and they could have won today the same as us,” said Nick Saban, the hard-driving Alabama coach. “It came down to the last play.”

  83. 83
    Ron says:

Right now I’m watching Nebraska get their asses whupped by the Badgers. My wife is from Wisconsin so that makes her happy.

    4jkb4ia says:

Pitt salvaged the season, and is going to a bowl. I will watch it even if it is the Meineke Car Care Bowl.

OK John, this is more important than you driving me crazy, or vice versa. I’m worried about you. Remember that even if you lose today, if Roethlisberger comes back you still have a good chance at a wild card. Also too, the line is even. If you have to, call your girlfriend on the phone.

  85. 85
    4jkb4ia says:

This year it’s the “Meineke Car Care of Texas” , matching Big 10 and Big 12 teams. That looks like a new iteration of the Texas Bowl.
