Charlotte Allen, writing in the LA Times has a plan so crazy that it just might work:
The Republican Party has been doing a lot of hand-wringing and finger-pointing since the presidential election. Half the conservative columnists and bloggers say the GOP lost because it overemphasized social issues such as abortion and gay marriage. The other half says the party didn’t emphasize them enough. And everyone denounces Project ORCA, the campaign’s attempt to turn out voters via technology.
But I’ve got a suggestion for cutting short the GOP angst: Sarah Palin for president in 2016.
You think I’m joking? Think again.
Yes. This is a marvelous idea. I support it fully.
Hell, why not Victoria Jackson as Palin’s running mate?
Somebody make this happen.
[cross-posted at ABLC]
g
I’m sure that idea will work out well for them. Is Charlotte Allen a Democrat or a comedy writer?
Alison
I just. I can’t even.
She has GOT to be joking, yeah? Hoping to be hired by The Onion? Last I saw, Palin had crappy approval ratings. And horrible policy ideas. And almost no experience. And certainly no fucking job.
Ridonk.

It’s an idea, after all. I saw this quote from the piece at LGM:
The pertinent observation Scott Lemieux offers says it all:
I’m with you ABL, somebody make it happen.

Sarah Plain and Stupid won’t be in a position to run for Wasilla dog catcher by 2014. She has less of a chance of securing the GOP nomination than does Bay Buchanan or that bow tie twerp Tucker Carlson.

I’m sure running Palin would fix the ‘Conservative Problem’ real good.
Whose side is Ms. Allen on?

I read this yesterday in the LA Times, and the comments are evenly split between those who swear it is satire, and the Palinistas.
Add my vote to the YES PLEASE! pile.

I got to the bit where Allen says that Palin would win because she appeals to the low-information voter…

Sarah Palin would like to double down on this proposition but the math is too hard.

As Charlie Pierce might say, the Baby Jeebus doesn’t love me enough to make this happen.
But . . .
PLEEEEEEZE!!!! Oh, how I want a Palin/Jackson ticket in 2016! In fact, I want it so much that I’ll even donate the maximum amount of cash to that ticket AND I’ll volunteer in their organization (such as it might be).
It’d be like a 24-7 reality performance sit-com!

Boy, the comments at the LA Times article are a fever swamp. There are two hardcore Palinites there who are just delusional. One is arguing that Palin’s academic record is more impressive than President Obama’s – the reason? We haven’t seen Obama’s transcripts. Of course, we haven’t seen Palin’s either. But I’m sure the Communications curriculum at Mat-Su Valley CC was much more academically rigorous than the Poli-Sci department at Columbia.
MikeBoyScout
Unlike the other 2016 wannabees in the GOP, Mooselini has kept her powder dry and has not attacked Mittens for his “gifts!” rationalization.
The crazies know it was the moochers who won the election, and Princess Dumbass of the Northwoods has got her finger on the pulse and her hand in the wallet of teh crazies.
FlipYrWhig
For this to work, she’d need a more seasoned, more thoughtful, more temperate politician in the VP slot. Maybe Rick Perry.
Sacrablue
@FlipYrWhig: I would think a Palin/Matalin 2016 ticket would be spectacularly appealing to the widest possible electorate.

How can I help make this happen?

If she were smart, Palin would recruit a member of her impressive gay fanboy base — yes, she has one — to help run her campaign. I nominate Kevin DuJan of the widely read gay conservative blog HillBuzz, a Palin stalwart since 2008.

@c u n d gulag:
I have to say, on the list of things that would piss off a liberal the Republicans running Sarah Palin ranks very very high.
Why I can’t think of too many other things that that Republican Party could do that would piss off liberals more than running Sarah Palin.
Don’t do it Republicans. Don’t run Sarah Palin. Unless you want to have a whole country full of liberals filled with angry yet impotent rage directed at you. Just lots and lots of angry, angry liberals. No happy liberals anywhere. Wouldn’t that be awful?

Can you just imagine the Republican primary of 2016? Or better yet, let’s not. Or best of all, can we just not think about 2016, at least for a couple of months?

That’s some mighty fine trolling on Allen’s part.

I read someone giving advice somewhere that the GOP should have gone all-in on the crazy in 2012. Tea Party 4 Lyfe Confederate America crazy. Instead, they hedged their bets with a formerly moderate Republican who would talk out of every side of his mouth and a few other orifices besides. Now they are left with a several factions all blaming one another for the loss and no clear picture of who or what is the least appealing part of their party.
Of course, they’re fucked either way b/c there is no way to add that extra 4% of the population to get them over the top without alienating either the evangelicals or the libertarians or what have you.
The question for us becomes, how do we peel off even more of their constituency and hasten their appointment with the ash heap of history?
KG
I hate that we are talking bout 2016, seriously, fuck that. Still, my money is on Huckabee, it’s his if he wants it. If nit Huckabee, then I’m not sure who is next on the “It’s His Turn” list

It makes sense when you think about it. After all, who would appeal the most to low-information voters if not a low-information politician?
NonyNony
@KG:
Let’s see – who was second place this year.
Newt Gingrich.
Nope. They’re not going to do that. They’re going to avoid the “his turn” schtick the next time around. Like they did in 2000 after two successive losses. Bob Dole got his turn in ’96, but then they rejected McCain in favor of a relatively fresh face.
So the lesson is that in 2016 they’ll run Jeb Bush. Or, heaven help the country, his idiot son George P Bush.
Jewish Steel
@NonyNony: As a strategy to cleanse the party of its looney faction you wouldn’t have to work hard to gin up support for a hard right turn.
Of course, there’s your problem. Cleanse the loonies and you’re looking at electoral slaughter to the tune of whatever 27% of 47% is.

I think this would be AMAZING. Especially if Michele Bachmann could be her running mate.
Uh, I mean, that would make me REALLY REALLY PISSY.

The fascinating thing about this is that it’s a perfect example of what Tom Wolfe, writing about art, termed ‘disappearing up the fundamental aperture’.
Namely, tying yourself in such tight crazy knots that you disappear up your own asshole.
In the Wolfe book, it’s art turning conceptual and disappearing thusly, to emerge as entirely literary Art Criticism with no subject or even observer, just theory alone.
In this case, it is our political system’s insanity disappearing up its own asshole to (hypothetically) proffer a completely wacky, demented elderly Mean Girl as a potential World Leader. She’s even less competent than Romney. Spectacularly unsafe for reality.
In doing this, our political system and our media will reinvent themselves as Swiftian satire.

Sargeant Pepper's Spray
Sorry Sarah partisans, but the GOP bosses will shut this down well before Iowa. They’re going to go with a slick shyster like Rubio and the machine will rally behind whomever immediately after New Hampshire. I think the last Palin-only thread a couple weeks ago topped out at 98 comments. This one will probably do a bit better, but maybe it’s time for us to admit that Palin is political crack. You know you shouldn’t do it (post a comment), but it’s hard to quit. It rots your brain, dumbs you down, does nothing good for your teeth (‘cuz you end up grinding them in disdain), and ruins a perfectly good coffee buzz. FSM, I’ll be glad once she is seen only on Celebrity Apprentice.

It just gives blog masturbators like mistermix something to masturbate blog about.
ABL Vista Home Edition SP1…that’s easy, she sees racism around every corner and in every nook and cranny. The queen of racism stupidity.
But back to Palin. I really don’t get why the fuck you people (in the Ann Rawmoney condescending sense of ‘you people) are so obsessed with her. She is nothing but full on grifter and her handlers know her niche which is pissing off you people any way she can. Remember Chick-fil-A. As soon as it was obvious the left was all excited about it…BOOM…out comes a picture of her and hubby in a store with a couple bags of chicken.
That’s her job….to piss off the left and you people (in the Ann sense) fall for it every fucking time.

Upon further reflection, I concur with my liberal comrades in saying what an horrendous idea it is to run Sarah Palin in 2016. They have come to hate every leader they’ve had since Ray-gun, and not just a mild dislike, I mean get-out-of-town-one-step-ahead-of-the-law type loathing. The only reason guys like Newty and Frothy get to come back is because they really think it pisses us off. And it does, because they’re asswipes and colossal dicks.
