The bizarre fantasies that conservatives will concoct in order to ignore the fact that We the You People rejected their Randian utopia has officially reached Level Ridiculous, with this gem from some fresh-faced assclown who writes for CNS News and calls himself Ron Meyer:
~snip~
Not everyone on food stamps votes or votes Democrat (and no one polls this subset of the population), and I don’t want to overstate the effects of the growth in welfare.
If citizens vote in their own personal, short-term interests, with 49 percent of the population receiving some sort of federal aid, Republicans will never win another election. Thankfully many of those 49 percent are elderly voters who want a bright, debt-free future for their children.
In fact, conservatives should take heart that this election was as close as it turned out. It means that at least some of those receiving federal aid are open to conservative anti-poverty ideas.
While liberals throw federal money at voters, conservatives must offer them something more substantial. It’s tough to beat politicians handing out free stuff, but we have to hope that careers and purposeful opportunity will appeal to American’s ethos.
Got it? In pursuit of his dream to plant his Randian flag into the sweet earth somewhere in the “every man for himself” land of milk and honey, Meyer laments that if all the hapless assholes who receive some sort of federal aid continue to vote what’s in their short-term interest, instead of what might be good for them in the never-gonna-happen event that they somehow move from the 47 percent to the 1 percent, then Republicans are never going to win another election. Ever!
But it’s not the GOP’s fault! And it wasn’t Mitt Romney’s fault either! Blame the moochers. Blame the 47 percent. Blame the sewage-dwelling swine-lords who shuffle through the underbelly of our society trading stamps for low-grade high-fructose food and foraging for scraps left for them by their Galtian betters.
But most of all, blame Obama and those damn dirty fascist Demonrats who bribed uppity youngsters with promises of government-subsidized book learnin’; bribed unmarried sluts with promises of guilt-free contraception-laden whoredom; and bribed Mexican anchor babies with promises of a fair opportunity to not get rounded up and deported.
Republicans didn’t lose, you see — they were tricked. They got cheated out of what is rightfully theirs. Nothing is their fault — it’s the fault of Democrats, liberals, and progressives, all of whom are nothing but communists handing out free stuff to poor bastards. What were these poor bastards to do in the face of such socialist charity? The temptation of “free stuff” is too much to bear when one spends one’s life eating Doritos Locos Tacos and trying desperately not to shit oneself.
Of course they were going to vote for The Black Socialist.
Which brings me to the following:
WHERE’S MY FREE SHIT, MR. PRESIDENT?
According to Mitt Romney, you were reelected only because you gave “big gifts” to young voters, blacks, browns, and bitches. At all times, I am at least half of those things — AND YET I HAVE NOT RECEIVED ANY FREE SHIT.
So, Mr. President — IF THAT’S YOUR REAL NAME — I want my free shit, and I want it now.
kthx.

I hate to tell you this, Mr. Meyer, but 100 percent of the population receives “some sort of federal aid”.
Who do you think built the interstate highways you drive on? Who makes sure that mail is delivered regularly? Who provides a legal system that ensures disputes between people and/or businesses can be handled in the courts, rather than with gun battles in the street?

On NPR today I heard a clip of Haley Barbour saying that the reason Romney lost was that Obama ran ads portraying him as an out-of-touch rich guy.
So apparently, that’s the problem right there. Romney lost because Obama had the bad form to actually campaign.

You’re just there to use it to funnel lots of ‘free stuff’ to the financiers who backed your colostomy bag residue of a campaign.
Now kindly take the free education this nation provided you with and fuck off.

@FlipYrWhig:
The sentence “the average Tea Partier is sincerely against government spending, with the exception of the money spent on THEM. In fact, their lack of embarrassment when it comes to collecting government largesse is key to understanding what the movement is all about” is still, to me, one of the best phrases ever written about the movement, or about politics in the age of Obama.

This is just appalling. As a person who received survivor benefits from Social Security to pay for college and later medical school who is now a 1%er (not Mitt Romney type 1%, but just over the threshold) I find this shit inexcusable. I work with wingnuts who bemoan “Obamacare,” but I recently treated the father-in-law of one of them for laryngeal cancer. He is on Medicaid. A current patient I am treating for rectal cancer was grousing about the health care law – he delayed starting his treatment for nearly a month until he was able to get Medicaid.
Oh well, as a rich white guy I just want to thank all of the African Americans, Hispanics, single women and all of the other “moochers” for saving the country from the rest of my ilk. It is truly painful to listen so many people I work with when they express their stupidity.

@ant: No.
Taking your tax dollars and sending it back to you is simply returning to you what is rightfully yours.
Taking your tax dollars and providing you with a highly useful service that otherwise wouldn’t be provided to you (like, say… health care coverage for a pre-existing condition) is communist soshalism of the highest order that only a Islamo-nazi Kenyan usurper would do to trick good, God-fearing Americans (who should otherwise know that the proper response to being denied health care coverage is to take up your rifle and go out to die fighing Injuns) into voting for him.
Brachiator
@g:
Because it’s not like Newt or Rick Perry or Santorum ever portrayed Romney as an out-of-touch rich guy.
And it’s not like the media remarked on stuff like Romney offering to bet Perry a little pocket change, $10,000, over some issue or other.
Nope. It was that devilish Kenyan and his promises of free stuff that did it.

Is this some new version of the Southern strategy? Moochers and takers vs the job creators. I wish someone would actually do an analysis of the percentage of republican voters who receive govt assistance. Not that facts will matter to these losers.

We’ll see how their “the lazy stupid electorate who all want something for nothing disappointed us patriotic hard working Republicans by voting against us because freedom” thing works out in persuading voters over to their point of view.
And the cognitivie dissonance is pretty amazing too. The party arguing, against all available evidence, that tax cuts create a utopia of prosperity while also closing the deficit – in other words, give us all something for nothing, ranting on about free stuff and gifts. Laughable, man. HAAA HAAA.
El Cid
These people can’t imagine doing anything for any reason for other than the most direct, selfish, immediate reward, in the crassest of terms, and doing and saying whatever they need to do to get it.
Thus they can’t imagine anyone doing anything for any other reason.
It’s why they vote. It’s how they vote. It’s why they run for office. It’s how they choose who to support.
But since they deserve anything they can manage to get, no matter how they get it, then it sickens them to imagine that people unlike them who don’t deserve all the stuff which should be theirs might be acting like themselves and voting in order to satisfy their naked greed.
Romney saw this whole thing as no more than the bullshit sales job he had to give to the intended victims before managing to get approval for a leveraged buyout, and then intended to use his new position as CEO of the USA to reward himself, his funders, and his peers with the ‘stuff’ and ‘things’ he could now get his hands on.
This is how these people act, this is how they think about things, and therefore it is how they view other people as acting, and how other people think about things, it’s just that those other people are disgusting and inferior and don’t deserve anything. And they think they do.
Chris

I’ve started puttting the surplus plasma TV’s in closets and cupboards so that I don’t miss a moment of my Kenyan socialist field directives coming in over the free satellite.
The mail carriers (thanks Big Brother!) divert checks and merchandise that would have otherwise gone to Republicans (we know who you are) to me although some of their merchandise is so gaudy I wouldn’t own it on a bet. Not even in kitschy sort of way (their porn is not too bad, but a little too twisted even for my tastes – who knew the market for chicken fucking vids was so vast?).

I am still SMH that Democrats completely missed the entire ascent of this narrative to dominance on the right – creeping Communism through people who are nefariously satisfied with government services – until it was advanced by the Republican presidential candidate
None of these people are echoing Romney; Romney was trying desperately to echo them, and much of Republican politics since 2009 at least has been built around this idea, which means that Democrats haven’t done a great job of grasping the reality of Republican politics for years

I noted at the time (2010) that this was a notable and racially-tinged shift in the Republican message: it wasn’t that government programs were inefficient, and the argument wasn’t even that they fooled people into becoming dependent on government – this was replaced by the message that the government is very good at giving very bad people what they want and thus very bad people would vote in Democrats eternally if we reached a point of majority Democratic support, which would then collapse the country; the implications about who should breed and who shouldn’t were no longer implications but stated positions
It had a lot of “welfare queen” overtones but it was notably different in its ardent “tipping point” chiliasm, the sort of Randist prophesying about America’s imminent doom that used to stay behind the scenes – it signified important Republicans abandoning any and all hope of appealing to Democratic-leaning groups and began the production of new language of quasi-materialist, even pseudo-Marxist critique of social democracy

I think I’ve finally figured out the whining. Since 1980, the Republicans have been running, and winning, on Reagan’s statement that government is always the problem and always makes things worse.

It never was, as I and someone else discussed just yesterday or the day before – Irish, Italian, Polish, Greek and other traditionally Democratic “ethnic white” voters in New York, Boston, Chicago, Detroit and elsewhere were just as much a target as Dixiecrats for Nixon and Reagan.
Anyways – it’s certainly not much of a strategy anymore, but it’s what they’ve always gone for. “Democrats promise too much to These People.”
And I’d say Asians and other constituencies have drifted away largely because that message has risen to a deafening roar that makes them all fairly worried that even if conservatives are focusing on blacks and Mexicans, anyone “other” can be next. Like, say, Muslim Americans, who despite their many years of loyally voting Republican were run out of the party on a rail after 9/11 made Islamophobic populism convenient for the right.

People in the armed forces, police and fire shall get two votes each, other government workers will be allowed 1/2 vote each.”

I’d wager that asshat is retired since he gave retirees a moral exemption to receiving free stuff, and he probably worked in government, since he allowed even parasites like postal workers half a vote. I doubt if they’d pay any attention to their admonitions against mixing church and state, or against “going overseas in search of monsters to destroy.” Or the meaning of the phrase “well regulated militia.” Or the fourth, fifth, sixth, eighth or ninth amendments).
This is also why the cult of the Founding Fathers in our culture so tiresome and why the Deep Space Nine phrase “the Founders are not gods” comes to mind at least once a week when reading politics.

@Woodrowfan: Yes, it was Circuit City, and not only did they fire their top performing salespeople as a ‘cost-cutting measure’, but they gave the same amount of cash that they ostensibly saved as an extra bonus to their outgoing CFO. Brilliant, right?
The problem with these business types is that they think they’re entitled to our money and patronage. They think we’re a captive audience and that we *must* spend our money there, so that if they jack up prices for some stupid reason, then we have no choice but to fall in line. They can’t conceive that we can simultaneously vote for Obamacare AND not eat their pancakes. Dear business-owners: You need to convince us, the population, why we should go to your place. So this is how they’re going to entice voters to their side — with more of the same?
One of my favorite lines EVER was uttered by a guy in the school-bus-driver certification class I took many (many) years ago. Teacher was a Calif. Highway Patrol officer, who on Day One explained that school bus drivers have to be CHP certified. One guy said, “But I already have a job driving for a private school, and I don’t have a certificate.” The officer said, “Well, all I can tell you is, cease and desist.” The guy said, “Is there any way I could I get in trouble for this?” And the guy behind him said, “Keep talkin’, chump.”
That’s kind of how I’m feeling about the GOP: Keep talkin’, chumps.

I’m sure this has already been said a million times, but I love how voting to continue food stamps is “short-term” thinking but voting to continue massive, unaffordable tax cuts somehow is not.

@johnny aquitard:
Also,
This is why it’s SOOOOOO funny when you hear them scream like stuck pigs that “the people didn’t vote for Obamacare!” or “the South should’ve had a referendum on civil rights!” – or even when they complain about liberal elitists being out of touch with “mainstream America.”
It’s so transparent.

Will those of us who kept our 18-26 yr old children on our insurance be getting refunds? Because I’m missing the part where keeping our daughter on our insurance was free. The thought of her not having insurance is pretty awful vs. paying each month to add her to our family coverage through my husband’s employer, and we feel pretty fortunate to have that option.
Next year we move to the UK where we will be covered on NHS,our youngest will be covered on NHS,and we will be paying $10,000+ annually for our daughter to be covered here. Sure will be glad when that free Obamacare kicks in, do we have to wait until 2014?
How anyone can begrudge someone health care is beyond me. I am so sick of these GOP fu$%^rs. Socialism here I come!

Ha! I suspect most of us will get only a baby’s arm holding an apple.

@Chris:
The awesome thing about that quote is that it’s essentially conservatives telling you “we don’t believe in democracy, either in the sense that it’s morally right or that it’s technically possible.”
The subtext “and it’s really time we got rid of that silly system and went back to one where You Fucking Peons Do What Your Betters Tell You To For Your Own Good” isn’t even much of a subtext when it’s blared as loudly as that.
King Arthur: I am your king.
Woman: Well I didn’t vote for you.
King Arthur: You don’t vote for kings.
Woman: Well how’d you become king then?
[Angelic music plays… ]
King Arthur: The Lady of the Lake, her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of the water, signifying by divine providence that I, Arthur, was to carry Excalibur. THAT is why I am your king.
Dennis: [interrupting] Listen, strange women lyin’ in ponds distributin’ swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.
Dennis: Oh, but you can’t expect to wield supreme executive power just because some watery tart threw a sword at you.

So…vote for Obama, get cool swag. Vote for Romney, waste billions of dollars on Karl Rove’s SuperPAC, which apparently wasn’t even properly registered and can’t explain what they spent the money on. Yeah, no wonder the Republicans are pissed.

@Lurking Canadian:
Goo stuff, eh?
1)Is that a canuckistan-only thing, and 2) is it free? ‘Cause I want free stuff, and I have to be able to find it at Walmarts here. I ain’t drivin all the way to Moose Jaw or fuckin’ Saskatchewan for it, free nor not.
They haven’t even got there yet, they’re heads are still asploding because a black guy is running their lives. But yeah, you’re right, a majority of the US finally buried Ronnie’s corpse.

@Chris:
I will not give them any due whatsoever, because they really DON’T want to go back to the time of the Founding Fathers. As you pointed out what they really want isn’t going to be found there.
Edit: Sorry, you were being snarky about giving them their due, right? I hope so.

@AA+ Bonds: I’d bet that some of the customers wouldn’t mind the surcharge for health insurance for the employees. But cutting their hours is reprehensible. F***king prick.
Brachiator
@Chris:
This is going beyond focusing on the next group as “the other.” Bill O’Reilly spilled the racial anxiety beans.
This is about more than phoney BS about makers vs takers. You have the explicit idea that only white people should be allowed to rule. To hell with the melting pot, or even assimilation. Nonwhites can be docile followers, but never leaders. And the preference is that the leader be a strong, Anglo Saxon male.
You saw this with some of the Tea Party wet dreams of an America as it existed around 1850, before even dusky European immigrants and the crazy Irish began coming over in relatively huge numbers.
Brachiator
It will be interesting to see if the GOP continues to cling to their stupidity. I know they hate numbers, but if you graph the Latino voter demographic demographic, the trend line looks very, very, very, bad:
But hey, the GOP can keep insulting Latinos and other groups, and continue their delusion that it’s just promising free shit that’s the problem.
Mnemosyne
@Brachiator:
And that’s really the point, isn’t it? All of those scary minorities now expect to be treated the same as white people and be allowed to compete for college and jobs on an equal basis.
Little Madison or Tyler can’t expect to get an automatic hand up just because they’re middle-class and white. Now they’re going to have to compete for it like everyone else, and some folks just can’t accept that.
Greyjoy
I wouldn’t be including Little Madison in there, as long as the national argument is about why we need insurance to cover birth control, why we should have access to birth control and reproductive care in the first place, or whether we still need to define rape or have laws against domestic violence.
Assuming Madison is the girl. It could just as easily be Tyler. *heh*
