I see Kramer pop up on tv from time to time. He shows up at Lambeau on alumni day. He seems to be doing alright for a guy who’s 76 and played in the NFL.
My hatred for the Vikes goes back to my childhood, when they dominated the division. Once they retire, I usually have good things to say about most of the players. However, I’ll go on record and say that I love Chris Kluwe, who’s still active. Great guy there.
@Corner Stone: I wish Jerry Jones would learn from Eddie DeBartolo Jr. the former 49ers owner let for your football guys run the team, win then you could show your face on TV. That is why I enjoy the pain of the Dallas Cowboys. And it must hurt that it is now the Houston Texans winning the heart of Texas.
I am sooooooo happy that Jerry Jones ego is so inflated that he can’t stand the thought the team might be successful unless he can claim credit. Given his total incompetence it pretty much insure the cowboys will not be successful. Unless he can find a bigger idiot (and Mike Lynn is dead so its gonna be hard to find someone THAT stupid) They can soak in well earned karma and mediocrity.

I don’t recall the particulars, but when Kramer was a kid, he was involved in some sort of explosion He was either working construction or he and his buddies had found some dynamite…Either way, they were just dicking around, blew up a shed…Years later, during his career (but in the off-season) he’s having surgery related to some G.I. tract problem, and the surgeon removes these huge splinters from his abdomen. The splinters are on display at the Packer Hall of Fame.
As for your cousin…Yeah, the culture was beginning to change around the league at that time. Lombardi had been there at ground zero in the ’50s as so many of the Giants were getting national endorsement deals. It was in their best financial interests to keep it clean in their personal lives if they wanted to hang on to their endorsement deals. As they partied less, they practiced and played better.
So Lombardi imported that culture of temperance ot the Packers. But he wasn’t an abolitionist. While he’d crack the whip on guys he thought required more discipline- guys like Kramer and Nitschke- there were others Lombardi figured would react negatively to the discipline, so he just let ’em do what they’d do as long as those guys were discrete. Hornung and McGee were at the head of that group.
I have yet to read Maraniss’ biography of Lombardi, so I don’t know if he addressed it there, but that’s what Niotschke told my dad. Much more to Lombardi’s approach than the conventional wisdom has it.
