I love cats.

Damn, I can’t be the only West Coaster with no life on this site. Come on, people. Don’t make me turn into Little Boots and just talk to myself in dozens of comments.
Yutsano
@Alison: I would never subject you to this. I just got involved with a late night long talk with the NYD. Updating him on the medical stuff and stuff. But you are not alone. It’s up to you to decide if that’s a good thing or not…
Alison
@Yutsano: YAY A FRIEND.
The NYD?
Something fabulous
@Alison: Bon soir! Covered up in chats here in this chilly la evening. Henri supporters unite!

Consequences of Republican advertising
Alison
@Something fabulous: Cold as crap up here too, which I’m particularly sensitive to. Times like this I wish I lived alone and could put the heat on. Or that I had already gotten around to replacing my space heater. Weekend errand!
Darkrose
@Alison: Hey there, girl. I’m awake, though unusually for me, I may be going to bed early–before 2 am. Watched Sports Center for a while, but I don’t care all that much about the Lakers. Trying to decide whether to play Rift or Skyrim tonight.
Something fabulous
@Alison: see, this is another value of cats: little space heaters! One is on my perpetually chilly feet and the other is at my hip. Small carbon paw print. :)
Alison
@Darkrose: I would watch SportsCenter if they cared about soccer other than during the World Cup :P
Nah, I still wouldn’t watch it.
I want to read but I’m too tired to follow well, but can’t go to bed yet, so I’m watching Letterman. FRIDAY NIGHT. LOL
Alison
@Something fabulous: My cat *could* be a space heater except she never seems to want to stay still for it, as though she knows when she’s being used. I wouldn’t put it past her. Cats are smart!

checking in from work, although I shouldn’t be… don’t worry Allison, you’re not alone and I doubt that you’d stoop to Boots’ level with the ongoing musical conversation that never ends…. I have to admit that I too long for a good banter and discussion that can only take place in the wee still hours of the night and commonly the folks I engage with on this sight are simply more diverse a constituency than I can find just about anywhere else. It’s why I vent, hyperbole and post here.

and we’re still waiting for 600K worth of provisional ballots to be sorted thru here in AZ before we can actually determine who won at least three Congressional seats and who knows how many local races were impacted. Who do we have to Thank, why it’s that birther-flirter Ken Bennett…. there has to be a better way to run an election so that we know the outcomes… nearly 10% of all AZ ballots this year ended up being provisional ones….and they have a deadline by the 16th to have them reported… oh yeah, good times ahead.
Yutsano
@Alison: New York Dawg. Or as I call him on Book of Faces, the Complication. Or a work in progress if you will. He’s been assisting in New York but he’s based in Rhode Island. Poor guy is exhausted.
Now I’m getting involved in random YouTube cwap. There might be Nigella Lawson here soon.
@piratedan: They finally called the governour race up here in WA. Inslee won, not much of an argument. For once. McKenna’s career is now toast. I r quite happy.
Alison
(And for some reason I’m in mod and this probably wont get through either, sigh)
ETA: It did! I have no idea what bad word I used in my other comment.
MikeJ
@Yutsano: Obama, Inslee, marriage equality, marijuana. A pretty good election day.
State prosecutor dropped 200 misdemeanor possession cases today.

Saw on the local news that Mary Bono Mack conceded her congressional race. That means that both she and her hubby both lost, he was running for FL Senate against Bill Nelson.

I put the link to Henri on the Coveritlive, but that’s probably not where you saw it. I could barely keep up with it.
I just finished watching Jon Lovitz’s comedy show on Showtime. He had three very funning comedians, but the best one was Daryl Wright. This clip doesn’t do him justice, but it’s the best I found.

@MikeJ: Too awesome. I wonder how the prison industrial complex will feel about losing such a major income stream.
gene108
I saw Skyfall tonight and in the previews there’s a remake of Red Dawn coming out soon.
Nothing in the preview indicated that anyone would be yelling Wolverines!, so what’s the point of remaking Red Dawn without the battle cry Wolverines?
BillinGlendaleCA
@gene108: I’ve seen a preview for Red Dawn as well, they did yell Wolverines. It really looked pretty bad.
Narcissus
I am on the East coast and have no life, unless by life you mean waiting for the MSNBC morning shows and then sleeping all afternoon, because if you do then boy-howdy
MikeJ
@BillinGlendaleCA: They certainly seem to have changed it a bit. If the original wasn’t so, so dreadful that might be bad, but how could they fuck it up?
(The following is based on one viewing of the trailer.)
The lead kid isn’t a kid in the new movie. He’s graduated high school and is in the marines. Which was was sort of the entire heart of the original movie. Secondly, the secret weapon thing. They (in the trailer) talk about it turning around the whole war. I sincerely hope they don’t really go down that road. It seems like in the original they knew they were just trying to make things difficult for the occupiers and ten kids in Colorado were never going to drive out the invaders. Guerrillas can and do drive out invaders, but not by stealing a box labeled deus ex machina.
It will be interesting to see if they make any direct allusions to the belief that guerrillas use “cowardly tactics”. When the original came out I don’t remember anybody making comparisons to Vietnam, but I was but a lad at the time. I wonder how directly they’ll parallel the experiences of our invasion forces.
MikeJ
@MikeJ: And on the page with that trailer is a link to the trailer for Cosmopolis, David Cronenberg directing a Don Dellilo book.
They should have gotten Cronenberg for Red Dawn. When the lobster people tried to absorb the US constitution is was up to a teenager who could only become sexually aroused while being given Strawberry Quick enemas to become that which he most fears.
Narcissus
@MikeJ: Lactose intolerant?
BillinGlendaleCA
@MikeJ: The trailer didn’t make me want to see the movie. Then again, I’ve not been in a theater in 7 years(kid wanted to go after basic training) and probably 15 before that. So I’m not exactly the target demo.

@Raven: Where’s the information about Benghazi? According to the comments on the Washington Post, this is about Benghazi.
edit.. the comments on the site you linked to are not kind.
Raven
@JPL: Yea, and I don’t think they should be. As far as Benghazi, I smells a rat too.

So….FL was supposed to finish counting Wed., then Thurs., then Friday…did they mean 2014? I’ll say it again….WTF is so fucked up with process in FL?

I probably, no definitely, should not have gotten out of the boat. Yikes! Went to the link that Raven posted. No prob with informative article, but the comments, double yikes! ! Confess I did the same at Assrockets place earlier, triple yikes! ! !
Can I say how glad I am to have stumbled onto this place? Even though it would appear it is overrun by crotchety, ornery types of all ages, the level of delusion is within acceptable parameters. And that’s important for Obots like me.
Oh, and have I rubbed the LANDSLIDE in the faces of firebaggers and neoNazis (no Republicans left) yet? No?
BOOKMARK IT, MORANS! ! ! HAAAAA! ! ! HAAAAA! ! ! HAAAAAAAA! ! !
Sorry, been waitin’ four long years to let that out. And y’know, they’re right; there is more room out than there is in. Who knew?
JPL
@Raven: This is my conspiracy theory, insiders at the CIA didn’t take to his approach and wanted to rid the agency of his style. Actually all we know, he was really stupid to use his email.
Raven
Note to self, when firing up the turkey gumbo stock that you left to cool on the porch all night, make sure the hotpad is not stuck to the bottom of the pot. Nothing like watching Rachel at 6am and almost burning down the house!

35, Bet that smells nice.
I read the NYT article on resignation yesterday evening. They say that Obama told Petraeus to wait a day and think about it before resigning. I call bs. This wasn’t about Petraeus at that point, but about the CIA.
The NYT has done this guessing type of thing before about Obama.
There were two quotes and they were not double sourced. It was like a gossip column.
There’s no question that Petraeus had to go and go right away. No way would Obama say oh, that;s okay, we’ll just forget about the affair.
TheMightyTrowel

@Baud: Shhh, gotta make a Grand Bargain, comity of the parties, bi-partisany shit sandwich.
Mark S.
I’m embarrassed to admit I didn’t even know Petraeus was the head of the CIA.
I remember when Petraeus was appointed to Afghanistan a couple years ago. The Villagers were ecstatic, like we were sending Alexander the Great over there. Then it occurred to me that a) all of these assholes supported the Iraq War, and b) Petraeus supposedly “won” Iraq with the surge, thereby allowing them to think they were right about the war all along.

@Punchy: A new law that the signature on every absentee ballot has to be checked against the signature on the registration card. If checker thinks it’s off it gets kicked to some other folks who do further hocus pocus to see if its valid.
The state did go for Obama, so we’re not all morons.
JPL
@Maude: Do you want the announcement before or after the President made a statement about the economy?
Raven, Sorry about the kitchen mishap.
arguingwithsignposts
Mark Halperin is polishing David Petraeus’ nob on MSNBC. Called him “a rock star.” on some MSNBC saturday morning news show. I guess MSNBC scaled back the prison lockup rotation.
Alex Witt: “you have to wonder about the timing here.”
Maude
@JPL:
That’s not what concerns me about the article. Obama would not say that Petraeus should stay and that is what the article was talking about. In it, that it was up to Petraseus to decide to stay or go. That’s what got me.
cantrip
@Yutsano: hey, Yutsano, is the governor’s position termimited or is it just a 2 term tradition here?
geg6
@arguingwithsignposts:
I don’t wonder about the timing. I’m guessing that they knew about this before Tuesday but waited until after the election to let it out. Why create this kind of distraction just as the election was coming to an end.
I haven’t read anything about this yet, but I have no doubt that this did not come as a surprise to the O Team.
Valdivia
@arguingwithsignposts:
apparently the affair had ended and maybe, like so many broken hearted exes, she decided to take a peek at his email which in general is bad form but takes on a different hue when your ex lover is the head of the CIA.
But of course for a week we will hear about how this is a way to throw him under the bus by Obama and nothing to do with him and this affair.
ETA: Obama asked for a day to think over the resignation (the CIA told him on Weds, P submitted his letter on Thurs) because they had to determine how much exposure there had been and made a judgement based on that.
arguingwithsignposts
@cantrip: someone said last night that the gov. decided not to seek a third term. Maybe she’s looking at other opportunities.
BTW, I know it’s been floated Kerry for State, but damn, I hope Obama doesn’t raid the Senate for his cabinet. It’s a relatively narrow majority as it is. There are plenty of competent people around who aren’t in the Senate.

Like many friends tell me they’ve been doing also, I’ve been lingering as I flip by FOX News these last few days for a little schadenfreudian analysis.
So just now I saw Mike Huckabee saying “And I don’t believe that people want to be on welfare, just to be clear. When I hear some Republicans say that, I think “You don’t know many poor people if you think people want to be poor!” And the helmet-haired one of the threesome he was speaking to responded “That’s why Mitt Romney’s comments about the 47% who won’t take responsibility went down so badly, people found it insulting!”
Truly a world turned upside down, my friends. Which is, by the way, the song the band played on the decks of the Titanic.
Won’t last, I’m sure, but even a vague attempt at moderation, modernization, and self-criticism on their part is a sight to see.
Davis X. Machina
NBC:
The night of the first (Denver) debate I linked to a don’t-panic BlueMass Group post that no Presidential candidate in the modern era who was upside down in personal fav/unfav in September and October had ever won the election, and that Romney had been upside down since the late winter, with Obama right-side up.
They look pretty good in retrospect.

A Saturday morning present: two new posts on Al Giordano’s blog. Had missed him since he decamped to parts south.
The latest is a congrats to American voters.
The earlier is his projection of election results; posted on November 5th. Looks like he did pretty well.
From south of the border, Al Giordano had a better take on the US election than candidate Romney and his brood.
Maude
@Bill E Pilgrim:
Dr. Susan Rice has been floated for SoS. I hope so. The Republicans have said she’s a no go. They don’t like her.
SiubhanDuinne
@SiubhanDuinne:
On reflection, I think this blog needs to add “Schadenfreudian Analysis” to the list of thread categories.
Elizabelle
@arguingwithsignposts:
Agree. Kerry should stay as US Senator. (And what is this about Virginia’s Mark Warner flirting with running for governor instead? Don’t dare!)
Bill E Pilgrim
@Maude: Yeah someone I had dinner with last night was wondering whether she’d be likely, I responded that the Republicans had made such a target of her lately in their fevered imaginings that there was a “gate” of some sort with Libya, that the WH might not go that way. Or they might say screw you and ignore it all, but it’s got to be a consideration.
Michael
@arguingwithsignposts: I like John Kerry, but if he goes to State, then you have a ral possibility of Brown ending up right back in the Senate. He’s still got pretty good favorables in Mass I believe. And goes into any special election with a big upper hand even over a talented challenger…that’s a big risk, to give a normally safe Dem seat back to the GOP. Plus it’d be awesome to stick to the nutters and put Susan Rice up there
kay
@Bill E Pilgrim:
Democrats have a real opportunity with working class women, and it isn’t abortion, it’s health care. They care about it. They know their kids are on SCHIP, although THEY WORK.
I don’t worry about Rightie pundits and politicians getting that, I worry about our pundits and politicians getting it. They don’t.
These women don’t identify as “poor”, although they are technically under 150% of poverty (or whatever). They’re not on welfare (cash assistance) and they work, so when Democrats say “the poor” they think we’re talking about someone else.
Michael
@Bill E Pilgrim: I think prob the shape and success of filibuster reform will matter here
JPL
@Michael: Comments over at the Daily Beast mentioned Colin Powell. I’m not sure how I feel about another military man running the agency.
edit… whoops.. I was still thinking CIA… my two cents on state though, the Gov. of MA could beat Brown so that would open the door to Kerry heading State.
Davis X. Machina
@Maude: Neither does the left. She’s too vocal a proponent of R2P.
arguingwithsignposts
@JPL:
We’ve seen that movie before.
Bill E Pilgrim
@kay: All true, but this was me hearing right-wing pundits and politicians on FOX News getting it. Or seeming to. Or you know, saying that they did. My jaw dropped. I’ve heard lots of “we have to rethink this thing” comments from Republicans this week, but mostly it’s been about how to hope to cynically manipulate minorities to get more of that vote, or etc.
JPL
@arguingwithsignposts: I added an edit..
arguingwithsignposts
@JPL: Ah, even at CIA, I don’t want any former Bush admin people creeping back in, even Colin Powell.
Davis X. Machina
@Michael: Brown’s toast.
His core voters — the truck-worshipers — don’t do losers. No town turns on its heroes faster than Boston. Maybe some day, when Dennis and Callahan start returning his calls….
PeakVT
@Michael: +1 on this. Unless polling shows that a Dem would be ahead of Brown in a hypothetical race, then Kerry should stay put.
Bill E Pilgrim
@JPL: I agree with AWSP, there are enough other choices that putting the Senate seat through another election with even a chance of the wrong person winning it is just not worth it. There’s nothing so special that Kerry would bring to State that they desperately need, I think it’s more just an obvious choice that comes to people’s minds.
kay
@Bill E Pilgrim:
Huckabee’s a good politician, but “the poor” is just deadly, IMO. No one thinks they’re poor. Who are they trying to reach?
I think liberals use it because they want to indicate we’re not ashamed of poor people, and conservatives use it because they want to appeal to charitable upper middle class conservatives but one would think you’d want to address this TO the actual voters, and the working class women here don’t think they’re “poor”.
Bill E Pilgrim
@kay: Oh it’s phrasing I would never use, it’s very much still a Republican way of putting things. I was just amazed that they were going in that direction at all, even remotely, even in a gazillion years. The FOX Standard Approved Comment on Romney’s 47% remarks was “it was taken out of context” and “here’s what he really meant…” or “I agree with him”. Not this. It just astonished me. That may be just me, clearly.
Davis X. Machina
@kay: It’s a term of art — ‘blessed are the poor’; ‘the poor you will always have with you’ — and Huckabee’s a preacher-man.
dww44
@JPL: This take was actually endorsed by Richard Engel on Rachel’s show last night. Engel was rather cryptic but clear on that fact. So, that’s obviously what his sources are telling him.

@Bill E Pilgrim: Hannity thinks they need to basically adopt the Amnesty/Path to Citizenship prongs of immigration reform.
Of course, that doesn’t fix their problems if they continue with shameless race-baiting, but its a start.
Its crazy, but at least some of the conservatives seem to get it, “it” being the broader message of this election.
dww44
@Raven:Someone asked you in a thread last night if you were responsible for the 4000 write-in votes for Darwin in your congressional district that Rachel gave a shout out to last night? I never saw an answer. I too would like to know. Was there a campaign of some sort to write-in Darwin?
Your comment in an earlier thread a number of days ago that you had done exactly that inspired me to do some write-in’s of my own as my ballot was filled with unopposed GOP incumbents.
kay
@Davis X. Machina:
Right, and preachers CAN use it that way, but politicians and pundits shouldn’t, if they’re trying to reach low income VOTERS.
Paul Ryan did the same thing with his big speech in Cleveland. No one wants to be the object of charity. Working people here don’t see themselves that way nor should they, IMO.
JPL
@dww44: I had read an article that the General was having problems adjusting to the mentally of the CIA because of his years in the military. Because I have to much time on my hand, I find the Fatal Attraction angle fascinating.
