Is Nate Silver A Witch? (Probably!)
Professor Krugman takes a victory lap:
… For a long time, right-wingers — and some pundits — have peddled the notion that the “real America”, all that really counted, was the land of non-urban white people, to which both parties must abase themselves. Meanwhile, the actual electorate was getting racially and ethnically diverse, and increasingly tolerant too. The 2008 Obama coalition wasn’t a fluke; it was the country we are becoming.
And sure enough that more diverse and, if you ask me, better nation just won big….
At the moment, the NYTimes has temporarily suspended its paywall. If you want some schadenfreude with your morning coffee, here’s Timothy Egan on the “Revenge of the Polling Nerds“:
In the last days of the election, Peggy Noonan had a “feel” that things were moving Mitt Romney’s way. George Will was more cerebral: his brain told him it would be Romney in a rout. And Michael Barone, who used to have a good divining rod to go along with an encyclopedic knowledge for all numbers political, also predicted a Romney landslide.
What they had in common, aside from putting up a brick Tuesday that completely missed the electoral net, was a last-hurrah push for the old-fashioned prediction by gut…
People who are surprised by the election – and Sarah Palin looked like she was close to tears as the obvious became obvious even to those who live in the Fox bubble – were probably listening to people who are paid to fantasize….
And Salon thoughtfully scoured Twitter to collect “The 20 Biggest Sore Losers of Election Night“, from all the predictable suspects. “We also don’t know 4 sure that the public is as pathetically wrongheaded as it appears. It really could be they rely on a corrupt media” — that’s media person David “Everything I Have, I Owe to My Brother’s Audience” Limbaugh. Actually, it’s only 19 losers — one particularly egregious blowhard stole the top two slots…

It does fell like this election is a turning point. Not just Obama won but teh Gay menace can get elected to the Senate and demon weed be legalized. And I suspect some conservative minds have been forced to deal with reality over this gut verses the numbers thing in the polling.

Thanks to all of you who worked so much harder than that this year.
I am very pleased though that one of my predictions was spot on. Our President would win without Florida and Ohio. I was not concerned about suppression there because I didn’t think he needed them and he didn’t.

My favorite sore loser comments
Hugh Hewitt: “The president won re-election, but not a mandate. Not even close. This wasn’t 1984 much less 1964 or 1936… The rot of Obamacare will spread, and the regulatory maximalists will press forward with their ruinous agendas, and the House will not be in a position to stop the unelected rule-makers anymore than the president can force through his devastating tax agenda.”
Matt Welch: “After four years of a crappy economy, bipartisan dissatisfaction with bailout economics, and populous revolts on the right and the left, we are seeing basically the exact same government we had on November 6th. The status quo, which has never been less popular, has just been ratified.”
Ronald Radosh: “It is essential that conservative intellectuals do not abandon the effort to change the culture, and to, in Gramscian terms (as the late Gene Genovese often put it), wage a war of position on the cultural front and to do all possible to challenge the ascension of a failed intellectual liberal ideology, whether it be in the form of Progressivism, liberalism or socialism. Whether it is called “the blue model” as Walter Russell Mead calls is, or something else, the intellectual fight against its assertions must begin with all the strength we can muster.”
Ron Fournier: “Barack Obama won a second term but no mandate. Thanks in part to his own small-bore and brutish campaign, victory guarantees the president nothing more than the headache of building consensus in a gridlocked capital on behalf of a polarized public. If the president begins his second term under any delusion that voters rubber-stamped his agenda on Tuesday night, he is doomed to fail.”
Joel B. Pollak “Our fault, as a nation, was to forget the lessons of our own success. Having triumphed in a global, decades-long struggle against collectivism and totalitarianism, we refused to celebrate that victory, failing for twenty years to teach its lessons to the next generation. And as Andrew Breitbart often reminded us, the most important battles must be cultural ones, because culture and media inevitably shape the political choices we make together. That war must begin anew. And it begins now.”
Warren Terra

I haven’t looked into it, but the TV news I had on until it signed off said many hours ago that the Miami-Dade vote counters were calling it a night and would resume in the morning. Obviously, that’s not consistent with your claim that FL is 100% reporting, but that’s what they reported.

Fuck them. Most of them will be materially better off under Democratic policies anyway. Let them suffer. I was crushed by the ’04 results, and I wasn’t alone. Let them suffer in the wilderness for a while. It’s the only way the right will either find their way back to national relevance, or collapse into a regional party with something else coming up in their place. My bet would be on the former, but it’s gonna take a while.

Oh God…. please make it stop…
It’s very disheartening to me how the House could stay so republican, even though the Dems won the popular vote and 1-2 seats in the Senate. Stupid redistricting. The Reps pushed history back a few years. But of course, they already pushed it as far as they could, seeing how close some of the new maps are to being unconstitutional. However, some kind of immigration reform is probably inevitable in the next four years. The Reps need it.

I’m just hoping Obamacare becomes popular enough that it can bury Republicans, who voted against it.
I’m not holding my breath, but I think that’s what it’s going to take to get back the House.
The problem is the 2010 class of right-wing nut jobs didn’t vote for or against the actual bill, though they attempted to repeal it 30+ times.
Also, too I fully expect Republicans to run on the basis that Obamacare was a Republican idea via the Heritage Foundation, in 1993, if Obamacare becomes popular in 2014 and 2016 and the media totally buying into this line of reasoning, despite all the votes against it.

Watching Obama’s speech, and I’m delighted that the audience actually applauded Romney when Obama talked about how the Romney family has dedicated itself to public service, which deserves honour and applause. I have to wonder if the tables had turned, if the audience would have given any applause to Obama. My guess is no.

Before 2004, it was the Governor’s choice. But the MA General Court changed the law in 2004 in case of a Kerry victory, to prevent then-Gov Romney from choosing a Republican. So now they have to have a special election to fill a Senate seat.
Ironically, this is how we ended up with Scott Brown in 2010 (Deval Patrick would have chosen a Dem). I suppose they could change the law back if they really wanted to, but I haven’t heard or read of any movement to do this.

Politics is really a long game, isn’t it. Scott Brown was just a place holder until a worthy replacement for Senator Kennedy came along. And although we didn’t take back the House this time.
