I do indeed loves me some Randy Newman.
Burn on, big river, burn on.
StringOnAStick
That was sublime; no one does irony with a melody like Mr. Newman.

Ack, something happened to the thread title, it’s been turned into raw html!

@Villago Delenda Est: Fixt. Memo to self: don’t blog and minister to a sick kid at the same time.

@Tom Levenson:
Ty so much, because the thread title is fuckin’ genius.

Interestingly, I’ve just gotten to the point in Sara Vowell’s “Assassination Vacation” where she talks about McKinley…
Kane
There are 49 days until Nov 6th. Throughout the entire 2012 presidential campaign, has there ever been a time where Romney has gone 49 days in a row without offering a gaffe or committing an unforced error or offending someone or looking completely unpresidential?
It only gets better.
Dennis G.
I love the Abe Lincoln line. Perfect.
danimal
If it weren’t Randy Newman, the parody may be lost and the song deeply offensive. IOW, Romney may bite on the campaign reboot ad if another singer covers.

Two lines of text and an embedded video?
Who are you, and what have you done with Tom?

Unrelated but funny: http://www.wral.com/news/state/nccapitol/blogpost/11454426/
“the Voter Integrity Project’s Jay DeLancy snatched his microphone off the board’s table mid-meeting, kicking glass doors open in front of him as he stormed out of the meeting room in the Public Safety Center”

So is Romney going to dump his campaign manager, or is it too late to do that?

@danimal:
Those not familiar with Randy Newman often miss the point. I recall when “Short People” came out (Newman’s first and greatest honest-to-Kirshner hit) some people missed the message, thinking it was intended as a slam on short people.
People also didn’t quite get that Mark Knopfler’s “Money for Nothing” was being sung from the perspective of a working class furniture and appliance store worker, who actually inspired some of the lyrics.

Mitt’s new campaign ad is up:

@danimal: Covers? Bah! A real Republican just uses the recorded version without permission.
You think the 27%ers are going to pick up on this “irony” thing, anyway?
MattF
I mightn’t have noticed it before, but now I suspect those guys were all Photoshopped to look… so… well… you know what.
Kathy in St. Louis
He should also redo his old favorite, “Short People”. Just change it to “Dark People” and Mitt really could use it on the campagin trail with the type of audiences he’s playing to.
Villago Delenda Est
Oh, and a speedy return to full health for the young’un, Tom.
@VividBlueDotty
@Kane: An earlier thread referred to it as the “drip, drip” but I prefer to think of them as contractions. They’re getting closer together.

That video is racist absolutely. Beige Americans is the new PC. Or, Crayon Flesh-toned Americans, if you prefer.

Hell, has he ever gone 4 or 9 days with out an unforced error? Wingnut heads be asploding for 7 more weeks!

I’m still kinda partial to “Sail Away.” I remember the first time I listened to it (vinyl, of course), and thinking “Ho-ly shit.” Actually, “Political Science” and “God’s Song” are pretty damn good, too, and certainly appropriate for Mitt’s “Modern” Rethuglican Party.

Just perfect.
Went along quite nicely with my morning cup of black coffee.

@Kane: Remember the Romney guy who said the plan was to put pressure on Obama and force errors? In September? Amazingly prescient.

Re: all the “Can Mittens go for more than two days without an unforced error?” comments:
Y’all are deluding yourselves: he’s using the rope-a-dope tactic, letting the Lieberal Media take shots at him until they’re too tired to do any more, then he’ll come in for the kill/knockout.
See, he’s taking it right outta the playbook (so to speak) of the man who invented the tactic, the greatest Mormon boxer of all time – Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr.
Randy P
OT for politics, on topic for Randy Newman: I’ve just discovered Audra McDonald via “Porgy and Bess” interviews. She does a killer version of, wellm everything but especially Newman’s “Think it’s Gonna Rain Today”, one of my favorite depressing songs.
BGinCHI
Not sure if this got posted in the other Romney Hates America threads, but here, via Kthug, is a great data post on who pays what in taxes and what it all means.
http://economistsview.typepad.com/economistsview/2012/09/nontaxpayers-are-overwhelmingly-the-eldery-and-students.html
Very useful for throwing a brushback against your Crazy Uncle Carl who always claims only the makers pay taxes.
danimal
@Villago Delenda Est: @Citizen_X: On second thought, Romney is quite capable of missing the point without assistance, or cover singers. I stand corrected.

I love this from Randy Newman. I still love his old song

@Sondra: Let’s drop the big one.
I love that song.

Nobody does it like Randy. Awesome phreakin post- 11-dimensions worth of awesome.

@SFAW:
Romney’s version of rope-a-dope seems to consist of him tangling himself in the ropes and knocking himself out.
Meanwhile, his corner is The Three Stooges, a bunch of dopes bickering among themselves about what their fighter’s best strategy should be.
nanute
Even while bowling, Nixon’s cheating! So over the foul line in that clip.
The Ancient Randonneur
Love it. Maybe the Final Romney Rebot campaign theme: If the dream’s big enough, the facts don’t count.

@SFAW: @Brachiator: Well he does put the ‘dope’ in rope-a-dope

@Brachiator:
I must be getting old or senile: when I read this, the image that first came to mind was the scene in Bored of the Rings where Stomper (or “Shtomper”, for you Teutonic twits – although he had many names) attempted to fight the Nozdrul.
Hungry Joe
In America you get food to eat
Won’t have to run through the jungle and scuff up your feet
You just sing about Jesus, drink wine all day
It’s great to be an American …
Ain’t no lions or tigers, ain’t no mamba snake
Just the sweet watermelon and the buckwheat cake
Everybody is as happy as a man can be
Climb aboard little wog sail away with me.
— Randy Newman, “Sail Away”
If I could write just one song (which I can’t), that might be it.

Who is the guy jumping into the pool, near the end? I don’t recognize him and haven’t seen that clip before.

@Scott S.: I loved that book. She did some great research. I HAVE SEEN THE DRAINPIPE FROM THE LINCOLN’S HOUSE!!! ;-)

For Randy’s take on foreign policy check out “Political Science”. Written in the 70’s, but could have been written yesterday.

My favorite was Tricky Dicky bowling in white shoes. I do love Randy.

Randy Newman’s “Roll With The Punches” needs some love:
There’s all these boring people, you see ’em on TV
Making up all these boring stories
About how bad things have come to be
They say “You got to, got to, got to feed the hungry”
“You got to, got to, got to heal the sick”
I say, “We ain’t gotta do nothin’ for nobody,
‘Cause they won’t work a lick.”

@Villago Delenda Est: Actually, “Mama Told Me Not to Come”, covered by Three Dog Night, was his first “Big” hit. A lot of performers loved his stuff; he himself was considered by the industry to not be commercial enough…Sigh…I’ve considered him one of America’s greatest geniuses since Rolling Stone magazine turned me onto his “Sail Away” album. Almost every song on it blows away “Short People” for me.

Thanks for that!
