This is my kitchen:
I think it will look much better once I unpack it from the boxes and transform the giant pile of panels, screws, slides and legs into something resembling counters and cabinets. (wimper)
I think I speak for my entire family when I say that if we never see another peanut butter and Nutella sandwich again, it’ll be too soon.

Fortunately when I redid my kitchen, I didn’t have little ones underfoot. I used the microwave more during that month, than I did during the previous decades. Having adult sons is so nice.
Good luck with your project.

JPL, please send your adult sons over! I’ll feed them plenty of peanut butter and Nutella sandwiches…

Self-assembled cabinets, oh noez! Last time I did one of those pieces I got it together all right, but to this day that particular chest of drawers is a couple of degrees off plumb.

Good luck, Betty! My son was going to come home this summer and help me renovate my kitchen, replacing the horrid vinyl floor and the 1940’s gold-flecked counter tops, but he opted for a summer internship with Habitat for Humanity. So I can’t even be mad at him.
The best I can do is scrape, sand, and paint the walls. The extra goodies will have to wait. sigh.

Could be worse. Could be bathroom.
May you adore the new kitchen once it is assembled.

@donnah: Since I’m on a slab, I opted for the snap together wood flooring system. They are pretty easy for the diy and as for counter tops, granite at least in the south is just a tad more expensive than laminate.
Since I was on a budget, I kept my sink which in good shape and chose granite that was on clearance. My son helped me rebuild the upper cabinets and I replaced the lower cabinets.
fun times..

I purchased a desk from Office Max. The quality is questionable and putting it together was a slow slog. Anyone who has tried to put together one of these, will understand my panic when I couldn’t find the (ee) part needed for page 27.
All worked out and it does look good. I put it inside a walk-in closet that wasn’t used and have to admit, it’s not coming out.

Oh lookie, a trend on the Law & Order / Touch on Crime side. We’ll enforce judge’s decisions when we decide to round II: Wisconsin will seek to enforce union law while appealing ruling
Wonder if this lot bothered to get its paperwork, etc. in order and filed any better than the last lot or if this is just grandstanding again.

I’d rather hit my big toe with a hammer than assemble and hang cabinets.

Was just out playing in the yard with our newest family member, a German Shepherd rescue we got a week ago. A relative of mine raises GSDs and she nursed this beautiful girl back to health and happiness after her previous owner abandoned her with no food for weeks. She is very smart and very loving, not to mention a great watchdog. She gets a little anxious when one of us leaves, but she loves her new family so much we just have to start slowly and reassure her we will always come back.
hep kitty
@Poopyman: Oh, they are terrified, absolutely petrified. Of course, my statement is a fantasy but I sure have acted it out in my mind.

It’s amazing they are so afraid of losing “their world” altogether and yet they have the power and enough seething rage and fear as to take away what little I have and destroy me, destroy us all.
And they don’t even read.
JPL
@S. cerevisiae: Moxie is thirteen and was rescued ten years ago. She has always been anxious. Repetition helps. Whether I am going to the store or to visit a friend, I always say bye, going to work. Of course she doesn’t understand the three words but does understand that means I’ll return.

Why do kittehs shake their tails in front of a piece of furniture like they are spraying even though they are not? What’s up with that? Mine is a female and she’s most definitely a sprayer in the litterbox but she doesn’t spray the house, thank God.

A couple of weeks ago, I got an earful from my PT about an ad he heard on the radio, an anti-Obama ad by a local black preacher who is pissed about POTUS’ pro-gay marriage stand. I passed on some of the stories about churches in California suddenly coming into money and snarked a bit about self-hating gays.
So this morning, I glanced through the headlines on my way to the coupon inserts and I saw “Christians divided over ad” above a local column. Buried in the text is an excerpt from from another local black preacher’s delightful open letter to the guy responsible for the radio ad. There’s a couple of turns of phrase in there that made me LOL.
But when I found the column online to pass it on here, I found a different headline: “Church leaders stand against radio ad attacking Obama”. Both sides do it for the print edition, yeah, uh-huh.

All I have to say is that I’m really glad I was out drinking while that post about higher ed and student aid was active. So much ignorance in the quoted article and comments would have had me losing my shit. Lies and ignorance in the original article led to too many lies and too much ignorance in the comments. Thankfully, there were a few commenters who actually had some knowledge and level heads. Sadly, they were completely ignored.
I really hate when the people on my side sound as stupid as your average Teahaddi rally.

Now it’s getting really weird. The job of journos at the Grey Lady is no longer to report the facts, but what people say are the facts? How in the fucking world is that different from stenography? Hells’ bells, why not just print Republican press releases?
All of this crap about BALANCE has resulted in the treatment of conservatives’ bizarre fantasy world as being equally valid as anything fact based from the other side. That does not lead to an informed electorate.

On the “both sides do it” issue, I am reminded of a book I read in grad school about press coverage of McCarthy in the 1950s, and how newspapers afraid to be accused of being pinkos and commits reported McCarthy’s statements as is, the story being ” Senator McCarthy stated…” without any suggestion as to whether his statements were fabrications. Too bad we don’t have any Edward R. murrows to thwart us on the back of the head and tell us to wake the hell up.
Betty, good luck with your kitchen redo! Is that Ikea stuff? We used Ikea cabinets and sink to redo our kitchen and love the way it turned out. Although if you have a wooden counter and they suggest you seal it, you probably should. We left ours as is and it is a road map of red wine stains and places where ink bled off wet packaging. And I still have mental shudders when I think about the redo process that took ages, and all the cooking with rice cooker, toaster oven and microwave we did, and the washing of dishes in the bathtub once my partner could not bear throwing away disposable items any longer. Ugh.

@IowaOldLady: Relative of mine was watching FOX earlier in my living room, and I was quite amused to hear what sounded like an accidental endorsement of government! Doctors on talking about whether fish oil supplements (as opposed to fish) have any health benefits, and how it is a billion-plus $ industry nonetheless, and the FOX spokesmodel asked if that was because of a lack of FDA regulation. I guess the big, shiny, ‘blame government’ button was in the way of the giant ‘blame overregulation’ button.

Ok, folks. Today
a) I have to cook a somewhat elaborate Rosh Hashanah meal for 10 people at my dad’s house.
b) The Cardinals are in a desperate situation on the West Coast.
c) I would like to use any intervening time I have to see RGIII play in some simulacrum of the big, bad NFL. (However, “sources” tell ESPN that Garcon will not play today.)
So if John arises from his illness, he can put up as many NFL open threads as he wants today. There is just nothing to fear.
Benjamin Hoffman, NYT: “With Ryan Clark returning after sitting out because of issues with playing at altitude, and James Harrison likely to return from a knee injury, the Steelers will be looking for a cage to rattle, and Sanchez is the unfortunate quarterback who will feel their wrath.” I still rashly say that Sanchez will not throw one interception all afternoon.
(John is not a douchebag, should feel better, and happy, healthy, and PEACEFUL 5773 to everybody.)

Good luck with the kitchen. I’ve been a bit depressed with the war zone that used to be my yard, but you reminded me that it’s nothing compared to the fun I had remodeling the kitchen. So thanks for that.

@J R in WVa: JR, I got my stuff from Ikea. I also used their 3D kitchen planning thingie to figure out what cabinets to buy, etc. I went with the Lidingo cabinets and Numerar oak counter top.
They screwed up my order a bit, but not too terribly. I’ll post an update at some point with a picture, but it’s a pretty sad mess at the moment. Best of luck with your reno!
