SPOILER ALERT:

Olympian overcomes hardship to win gold!
WereBear
My favorite won gold in Women’s Gymnastics all around. Squee!
General Stuck
Who was it this morn in a mistermix thread poo pooing the notion that Obama is now ahead in the polls?
Hello Mitt Romney. This is America, and we’d like to know a little bit about you for our files.
MoeLarryAndJesus
It was horrible watching Rafalca stomp that judge to death. But it made Ann Romney laugh, so I guess it was worth it.
geg6
I think I’ve guessed the biggest Olympics news, but won’t put my guess up yet for fear of inadvertently spoiling. But if I’m right, I’m thrilled already.
Women’s eights are awesome, I must say.
dmsilev
I heard Rafalca took the silver in the women’s 200 meter freestyle.
Doggie D
My all-time favorite is swimming.
scav
@dmsilev: Oh, that’s tragic. It’ll clash with her Bronze from ping-pong. Have to build an other stable proto so the color schemes will work and not upset the sensibilities..
Litlebritdifrnt
@General Stuck:
Exactly. We would like to see more of your resume. You are applying for the most important job in the world after all. At some point we have to ask, you want the job but you won’t tell us who you are?
Suffern ACE
Id watch, but I decided to throw this viewing session to get a better draw for my weekend viewing.
Baud
@Litlebritdifrnt:
Next time I apply for a new job, I’m going to have to use the Ann Romney line: I’ve given all you people need to know.
Lolis
I had a job interview today. The job seems fine and it pays 6 K more than I currently make. I am double crossing all my fingers. I need a living wage.
Lolis
@MoeLarryAndJesus:
Ha. I have to say I love Ann Romney jokes. It is hard to believe that four months ago I thought she was nice. The Romney campaign sucks so bad.
burnspbesq
@geg6:
Dookies have a special rooting interest in the women’s eight. Caroline Lind is the daughter of Fred Lind, who came off the bench to spark an epic triple-overtime win over North Carolina in the 1960s.
We’re also claiming Mrs. Shelden Williams (Candace Parker) as one of ours.
burnspbesq
I hope this isn’t too much of a spoiler but …
49 points in ten minutes? Ridiculous.
burnspbesq
@Lolis:
Good luck. Rooting for ya!
jl
Request for dancing horse spoilers.
This is the first day of Olympic dressage, right?
I want to know how well Rafalca did asap. Rafalca for the gold!
I don’t care about no stinking spoilers.
AxelFoley
@burnspbesq:
Ah, you’re a Dookie. You have my sympathies.
Quicksand
Tragically, Rafalca was lost in a water polo accident.
Baud
@jl:
Rafalca was doing great, but then he publicly disclosed a secret meeting with MI6, and it went downhill from there.
kc
Look, you people, make fun of Ann and Mitt Romney all you want, BUT LEAVE THE HORSE OUT OF IT.
kc
Gym volleyball is way more interesting to watch than beach volleyball.
MattR
@kc: I broke my thumb playing gym vollyball. That was interesting.
Stupid teammates and their elbows.
Geoduck
@burnspbesq: Could we just, you know, declare them the honorary winners and let everyone else actually play?
Narcissus
@kc: not enough bikinis
MikeJ
@jl: Bring on the dancing horses!
MoeLarryAndJesus
@Lolis:
When she’s out among the peasants she usually has a “who farted?” look on her face. I’ve never gotten a “nice” vibe from her. After Willard loses he’ll be spotted a time or two with facial bruises. Count on it.
burnspbesq
@Geoduck:
The chump games are over. Lithuania will probably give us something resembling a game on Saturday, and then it’s on to the quarterfinals, where we will likely run into Spain or Argentina, or both.
I agree that Nigeria should get some special award for defense. Kinda like AYSO: Trophies for Everybody!
Hill Dweller
@burnspbesq: The game was actually shown live. Twenty nine three’s and one hundred fifty six points, despite calling off the dogs for the last five minutes of the game.
It was the most amazing shooting display I’ve ever seen. Doc Rivers was saying after the game that a lot of teams would have problems shooting that high of a percentage from behind the arc in practice.
burnspbesq
@Hill Dweller:
I watched a little of it, but I was in the office and the stupid NBC iPad app doesn’t have audio, so I went back to watching the Mets impersonate a competent major league baseball team.
I could sort of imagine K looking down at the end of the bench and saying “Put in the walk-ons. Oops, I don’t have any walk-ons.”
Going to Petco Park for the first time tomorrow night, to watch R.A. Dickey mow down the Padres and their disgusting brown throwback unis.
jl
@kc: I sincerely with for Ralfaca to medal. The country’s fate may depend on it. And she seems like a nice horse.
ruemara
@Lolis: Luck, luck, luck!
Hill Dweller
@burnspbesq: Carmelo was on fire, but he wasn’t alone. Everyone was hitting threes: Durant, Love, Kobe, Deron Williams, Westbrook, Paul, Iguodala.
They came out on a mission after their crappy performance in the Tunisia game, and it got ugly in a hurry.
NotMax
@Lolis
After living up close with a horse’s ass all those years, can’t really fault Ann much for wanting to interface with the other equine end for a change.
burnspbesq
Quarters in women’s soccer tomorrow. USA-New Zealand, GB-Canada, France-Sweden, Brazil-Japan. Go Japan, send whiny-ass Marta home.
USA plays at St. James’ Park. How do you say “c’mon you Yanks” in Geordie?
Brother Shotgun of Sweet Reason
@burnspbesq: Dunno about Geordie, but I expect it’ll be more like “C’mon you septics!”
geg6
@burnspbesq:
Penn State and my high school alma mater has an interest in the women’s volleyball in Christa Harmotto. She took Hopewell High to the state championship twice and at PSU led the team to two national championships. She’s a great girl, too. I so hope she wins a gold!
Paula
Jesus … is it bad that I was kinda rooting for the Russians in the all-around? With the exception of Nastia Liukin, American gymnasts tend to emphasize the strength/height over the artistry. This current American squad is much better than the one that went to Beijing, but the two Russians were better at connecting their elements into an overall performance, however wobbly they were. Is that talent limited to the post-Soviet states?
Mino
Gabby Douglas is being trashed on twiter for her hair. Can you goddamn imagine??
Allen
I watched the women’s eights. I tried rowing in college but my body cursed me, couldn’t get light enough for the lightweights, couldn’t get big enough for the heavyweights. The American women are getting to be an Olympic powerhouse.
What amazes me are the bicyclists riding parallel to the course. Surprised there aren’t many pileups.

@geg6:
My sleepy suburban home town has produced one Olympian, Anne Donovan, who was on the gold-medal-winning 1984 and 1988 US women’s basketball teams. She is the youngest of six siblings, all 6’4″ or taller.
The high school football stadium where I live now is named for the local guy who won the gold in the 100 meter dash at the 1912 games.

“Howay the Yanks” will do. For a primer, CherylKerl will help you out.
