If you’re an olympic archer, how do you shoot a 5? The Koreans are killing the Mexicos. Just dropping it on them.
@Valdivia: Best times get into the finals. Phelps was in the second to last heat. The last heat was so fast that five guys from it got into the finals. Two other guys in earlier heats also had faster times than Phelps.
That’s the danger when you lay off your best effort to save energy for the final. Lochte also laid off at the end, but since his heat was faster he had a better time.

Since I’m very conservative about these things, I prefer the Olympics to be an international track and field meet – a competition amount individuals with no one counting which country wins to most medals. But I’m no fun.
The idiotic media talking heads were running their traps about how Phelps didn’t need to win his heat, blah, blah, blah. Then it turns out that Phelps actually took the last open spot in the finals. If he had not won his race, he would not have advanced. The same blathering idiots then began running their traps about how close a call Phelps had without any mention of their earlier idiocy. It perfectly underscores a major problem with the US media. No acknowledgement of their mistakes, no self reflection, just ever onward with more of the same.

This is the dressage portion of three-day eventing. It’s actually a fun sport if you know what you’re watching. I was rooting for the American, as she’s 54 and I love that there’s an Olympic sport that middle-aged athletes can do, but the horse was a bit keyed up (like people, they can get overexcited). Horses, like people, are stronger on one side than another, but in dressage they have to do all the movements on both sides- it would be like making archers shoot with their right and their left hands and expecting them to be identically good on both.
The German horse had a great trot- just looked like he was floating.
British rider is 51 and the horse is 15. Middle-aged duo.

@Villago Delenda Est: NBC really don’t get the idea of the whole century yet. More than people with access to the Canada can see the other coverage and compare the product and B) the rest of the world can see it and watch the Parade of Nation(al) Ignorance and low-grade xenophobia at the beginning. Coverage in the rest of the world ain’t prefect but they do seem to have the concept of covering Sport, not Fluff Interviews and selected clips of highlights. (Granted, I gave up watching years ago because the coverage was so physically painful so my description of how exactly they’re crap at may have become dated.) OK, /rant but I do live in faint hope that they’ll be enough yelling at some point that they’re recognize how crap they are . . . who am I kidding.

The only issue is that she does not have insurance and her doctors have been trying to give her generics, but all her drugs aren’t offerred in generics so her drug bill totalled to over $1000!! So we are going back to her doctors to have then go for generic brands and if not then a hell of a lot of samples. OK, I just watched my first stream (a replay of women’s volleyball, China vs. Serbia) and I’m happy. It was worth signing up for Verizon FIOS to get access. I got to watch the event I wanted to watch, with no cutaways, no commentary, nothing but the athletes doing their thing and no having to worry about whether the event would be covered, or if it were how much of it would be cut.
Got some technical difficulties. The stream seems to cause my Mac Air to lockup after awhile, my guess is due to overheating. But I think I’m going to enjoy this Olympics and finally see the events I want to see.
FYI, I’m watching the streams from the NBC website, which require you to have an account with some cable provider which carries NBC.

I actually competed for our club team until my late 30s, but it was very hard to do. And that was certainly not Olympic level competition. She’s just too old, sadly.
mikefromArlington
Ok…wtf????
They didn’t show the Phelps race live?
mikefromArlington
Is NBC out of their f’in minds?
geg6
@mikefromArlington:
You do not seem to understand how Olympic broadcasts work. All important events (ie: those an American might win) are NOT to be shown until primetime.
Origuy
@Corner Stone:
The bout between Elisa Di Francesca of Italy and Chun Hyun Hee of South Korea was epic.
Edit: Spoiler deleted.
MikeJ
Dr Who marathon! Or are they calling it a Snickers now?
Valdivia
@geg6:
I watched too, so great. I brought my laptop to my parents and we all sat and watched the IM 400 together because NBC was not showing that live. How weird is that?
geg6
Aaaaaaaaaaaand there goes the satellite!
Fuck.
Villago Delenda Est
@Zifnab:
I believe many reached that point about 10 minutes into the opening ceremonies.

Ok. watching fencing now. The Italian woman scored a point, judges took it away on replay then gave it back. ??
S.Korean woman up by three.
I’m on tenterhooks here.
eta:It’s very Star Wars-y. Helmets light up and etc.
LanceThruster
Since when did the Olympics change from competing nekkid?
[sigh]
geg6
And the satellite is back!
WOOT! Women’s volleyball! Go Christa Harmotto!

ETA: And, If I have to choose between Hopeless Causes, Go Nuns!
raven
@mikefromArlington: This is where discipline is going to be needed. Every news site in the world has the swim results and you will not even be safe here because some dickhead will give it away.
Comrade Nimrod Humperdink
@geg6: A couple hours ago here in Oz they were showing the men’s beach v/ball match between Canada and Britain. Whitest beach volleyball game ever.
raven
moderation my ass
raven
hello
MikeJ
@raven: Is it me you’re looking for?
raven
@MikeJ: I made 4 posts that went to mod.

@MikeJ: I can see it in your eyes
CW in LA
Commercials during the soccer game? Fuck NBC. Fuck ’em hard, fuck ’em raw.
Origuy
First medals of the Games about to be awarded, in women’s foil. Il tricolore on all three staffs.
raven
@Origuy: Thanks, as I sit here and watch the semi’s. It’s going to be a long 17 days here.
Scuffletuffle
@Zifnab: I tried it but still can’t get any video. What did I screw up?
lamh35
@a hip hop artist from Idaho (fka Bella Q): moms doing great. still bitchin’ about her new low carb low fat diet, but shes keeping her sugar in check and takin’ her meds regularly.
The only issue is that she does not have insurance and her doctors have been trying to give her generics, but all her drugs aren’t offerred in generics so her drug bill totalled to over $1000!! So we are going back to her doctors to have then go for generic brands and if not then a hell of a lot of samples. She needs enough meds to last her for her move to NOLA and until she gets a decision on whether she can receive Medicaid.
Still so far, so good.
Origuy
@raven: Sorry about the spoiler. I think the only question was which Italian would be on top.
NBC cut out before the awards ceremony. I guess they’re only going to show them if an American won.
Raven
@Origuy: Nope, it’s all good. I just have to condition myself to stay away when I don’t want to know.
Allen
Well, it appears that you must have Pay TV to watch NBC Olympics, which totally sucks is you watch over the air. And their contact us page doesn’t work.
Valdivia
@Allen:
the link provided by @Zifnab: works beautifully you can watch the whole thing streaming live for free.
WaterGirl
@Yutsano: Wasn’t he laying low even before the maté incident? I think that’s why he got other bloggers to sub for him. I assume since LIbby Spencer is still here, DougJ is away and not really planning to blog.
But after the scary maté incident, it would be nice if he would pop in and tell us he’s feeling good.
I felt really bad for him that he was unable to give his talk. Some people prepare for that kind of thing for months. Really too bad.
WaterGirl
@Zifnab: I was pretty excited when I saw that. Not for mac computers. :-( Pretty awesome for the rest of you, though!
Raven
@Zifnab: I got a really intense waring about that site from my virus software.
Randy P
Yutsano
@WaterGirl: He’s at a conference in an undisclosed location. No further details after that.
Scuffletuffle
@Valdivia: How? I went to the site zifnab gave, downloaded the software, went to BBC sport and all I get is news articles…no video at all. I don’t get it.
Valdivia
@Scuffletuffle:
you should get a webpage that says you are getting a different IP address that lets you stream from the bbc. and a banner that tells you are connecting through it on top of the web page.
ETA: you also have to install it not just downloaded, just in case I did not make that clear. :)
Allen
Well, I got Expat Shield. I am a Mac user so I had to to go to the Windows side of my Mac, and it worked great. For Mac users you need Boot Camp, Parallels, and a legal copy of Windows, or Firefox add-on Stealthy (set location to GB(UK)).
Canuckistani Tom
Loved the men’s 400 m Freestyle, we were cheering the Chinese swimmer who must have missed setting the world record by a 1/100 of a sec
