“The Sherrif — still near!”
From MSNBC:
Rachel Maddow reported on Romney’s remarks tonight, which he made at a fundraiser in Hamilton, Montana. Maddow sourced the comments to a pool report…
And later on The Last Word, Goldie Taylor of The Grio had a more visceral response to Romney’s comments.
“That tells me all I need to know now about Mitt Romney, who at first I believed is just disconnected,” Taylor said. “Now I know his problem is much bigger than that.”
And tomorrow: A feast with the Dark Lord!
Anybody else remember the old Esquire meme, “Why is this man laughing?”
j
Thanks. I’ve been looking for that video since I saw it live about 3 hours ago.
MikeJ
No.
Jay C
So that’s Mitt’s take on the raison d’etre for the NAACP – “More free stuff from the government“??
I gather, then, that the Republicans have decided to write off the last dozen or so black folks who might have considered voting for them….
TaMara (BHF)
Ok, I’ve had a rather stressful LONG day, so this just may be the cortisol talking, but if anyone tells me they voted for this shit-on-the-bottom of my shoe asshole will be exorcised from my life.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
Romney knows, IOKIYAR. He gets it. He’s doubling down on the Lowest Common Denominator politics, from Trump to this.
lamh35
I really am pissed right now. I really cared less about Mitt’s NAACP speech. In fact if ya check out my comments after the speech, I admitted to not being surprised that he was booed. I know that was exactly the reaction he was looking for.
But that damn quote from the fundraiser “if they want free stuff vote for the other guy…” really PISSED ME OFF.
I cannot even tell ya. Now I’m glad the people there booed. I’m spritually joining in their boos too.
R-Money and his racist R-money millionaires can kiss my royal black ass.
BTW, I sure wish I knew where we are supposed to go to get this “free stuff” cause when I was a child who wasn’t poor enough to get government assistance, but not so well off as to not be helped by the “free stuff from the government” I sure coulda used some of that free shit.
NotMax
@MikeJ
For more than 40 years, Esquire included this photo of RMN with the caption “Why is this man laughing?” as a part of its annual “Dubious Achievements” awards.
mai naem
I gotta admit I had my doubts about this story. I had to confirm it because I just didn’t think he would actually say this. He may as well have said Ni”CLANG”. He is an a*hole. This guy is all white. The people behind him in his photo ops are 99 percent white if not 100 percent white. All five sons are married to white people. There’s not even an adoption of a non white child like McCain or Huntsman. Yeah, you don’t have to, but Joe Williams had a point. This guy is only comfortable with white folks.
lamh35
I posted the full quote on an older thread, but here it is.

Shorter Romney: u lazy azz niggras need to get off ur azzes
Ash Can
Like I said in the last thread, at this rate he’ll be throwing the n-word around by the middle of next month.
And I have to say, I wish a motherfucker would. Get the shit out in the open once and for all, in such a glaringly obvious way that even Politifact can’t paper it over. Make it the talk of bars, beauty parlors, office cubicles, and social media from sea to shining sea. Make everyone realize just what’s at stake.
Ash Can
@lamh35: I’m surprised his remarks got any applause at all.
pseudonymous in nc
It’s irregular verb time!
“I pay the taxes required of me after my team of accountants have shuffled my money between a dozen trusts and half a dozen countries.”
“Those people get free stuff from the government.”
NotMax
@Ash Can
Mitt is too sedate to blurt out the N word.
Pardon the bluntness of even typing such a disgusting and derogatory term, but “porch monkeys” would be more his speed and his style.
mai naem
Somebody needs to send this to Condi Rice at her twitter account – Condoleezza Rice
@CondoleezzaRice – being that she’s been showing up at fundraisers of Romneys and any other African American who’s supporting this pos Michael Steele,Ron Christie etc.
Gretchen
@lamh35:
Thanks for posting the full quote. I can’t see the video and didn’t know what everybody was talking about. Wow. What could he have been thinking? Steve Benen thinks he went there planning to get booed to up his cred with the base. Maybe so.
Jeff Fecke
@Ash Can:
It’s because a) The people in the audience were much more polite than Romney deserved, and b) he trucked in all 200 of his African American supporters to cheer.
satanicpanic
I know I shouldn’t be shocked anymore, but I was SHOCKED. Shit, that’s the most obviously racist thing by a presidential nominee since Reagan and his welfare queens bit.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@Gretchen:
That’s what I”ve been wondering. Was sneering about “Obamacare” in front of an Obama-friendly audience a blunder or an indirect shout out to people not in that audience. I think we know now.
kindness
And here is where the condrum is spoken:
‘How is Obama even remotely close to this man?’
What has happened to Americans? I want to apologize for all the other boomers out there who are absolutely self absorbed and completely selfish & self centered. Well, at least they follow the boomer mantra where it’s all about self.

@mai naem:
Minimal edit. And yeah, I think that it would be clarifying, like a thunderstorm at the end of a humid summer day, for Rmoney to run his campaign plainly on what he means, which is “fuck the poor, fuck the darkies; if you’re a dumbfuck whose sole political motivation is the prospect of fucking over anyone worse off than yourself, vote for me.”
The Dangerman
If I saw Job Creators actually creating jobs, I wouldn’t want the Government to do it…
…but, it’s a basically a zero sum game. You need X jobs. If private “Job Creators” (a phrase which is basically bullshit, but I’ll run with it) create Y jobs, government has to create X-Y jobs. The way government funds itself is with taxes, so that means “Job Creators”, in a progressive tax system, get taxed accordingly. This isn’t that hard. Now, “job creators” aren’t creating jobs AND they want government to slash jobs, too. It’s insane.
soonergrunt
@lamh35: i’m so white that my real name is Whitey McWhiteyson, and we had the government aid when I was growing up.
My dad went to school on the GI Bill, and we had welfare too, because the minimum wage job my mother had in 1973 wasn’t enough to pay for a family of five while my dad was in school. And unlike Mitt, my parents didn’t have stocks to sell to pay for sanka.
Fuck those entitled pricks and the dressage horses they rode in from third base on.
Chris
@Jay C:
So if I support the ACA, which the Supreme Court has just ruled was a “tax,” that means I want things for free? I’ll pass on the irony of the man trashing a system he himself implemented years before Obama.
El Cid
Well, someone has to protect our precious national fluids from the Kenyonesian bowing usurper.
That’s this guy.
He’s also among the several dozen retired officers recruited in the Bush Jr. administration’s strangely unnecessary program to make sure that even more pro-Iraq War sources appeared on TV news shows, flying the flacks around on Cheney’s jets and so forth.
I’m sure he thus has no grudges against, say, the New York Times which exposed this domestic and profitable propaganda campaign.
Freedom!
PeakVT
@Ash Can: Of course the GORP never will put it out there, because then it would lose the votes of those who are good at avoiding the obvious but unstated. We can all wish for it, but it will never happen.
NotMax
@El Cid
Heh.
Have been sitting with this story tabbed for hours and hours now waiting for an Open Thread, as there is a truly scary tell from a Republican congresscritter in there.
pseudonymous in nc
Admittedly, African-Americans would like some “free stuff” from the government, like the constitutionally-mandated right to vote. So there’s that.
Anne Laurie
@PeakVT: I suspect Marco Rubio, Nikki Haley, and even Bobby Jindal have just withdrawn their names from the veep-vetting process. Why go through all that hoop-jumping when your prospective boss has just posted a “No non-whites need apply” poster in the shop window?
jl
At first I thought that was a pic of the Dalai Lama in a suit and tie. Anyone else see the resemblance?
I need glasses. Or deep karmic mysteries are about to unfold.
That would be ghastly and precious Buddhist Hell for Cheney, to turn into the Dalai Lama. No more rum and cokes on bagged hunting trips.
lamh35
Oh, BTW, if you were wondering if Romney maybe wasn’t directly responding about the NAACP please check this link out:
Romney On NAACP Booing: If They Want More Free Stuff From The Government Vote Obama
And this the rest I posted upthread.
ChrisNYC
How do they face themselves in the mirror? Mitt Romney, a grown person, a member of a group that was chased across the country and ostracized, today said to himself, “Yeah, let me gin up some race shit at the NAACP. I’m in!” Their willingness to debase themselves is astonishing.
Ash Can
@Anne Laurie: Maybe the VP pick will end up being Joe “You Lie” Wilson.
ETA: Of course, the prospect of playing the role of house n****r wouldn’t stop any of these charlatans from going after the VP gig. After all, if Nikki Haley can throw her entire gender under the bus by defunding domestic abuse programs in order to prove to the party what a good soldier she is, there’s no telling what’s going to end up with tire marks all over it.
Chris
@lamh35:
This is hilarious coming from Romney of all people, the man who did a complete 180 on every single issue (including his signature piece, namely the “Obamacare” he’s bashing today) the minute his constituency changed from “the State of Massachusetts” to “the nation-wide Republican Party.”
Yeah, you don’t give different speeches to different audiences… Different policies, maybe, but never different speeches.
NotMax
Um, yeah.
That whole “if you understood who I truly am in my heart, and if it were possible to fully communicate what I believe is in the real, enduring best interest of African-American families, you would vote for me for president” stuff wasn’t a blatant attenuation?
El Cid
@pseudonymous in nc: Free voting is soshullist!
George Washington didn’t die on the cross so that lazy bums could walk up to some government-funded ‘voting booth’ and vote for whoever they wanted to be in government.
scav
So, everybody know what to yell at the very next too big to fail bank or hedge fund that comes ratting its little tin cup? That fat-arsed crowd was probably more than usually uncomfortable sitting down because of the govt cash in their wallets, lounging back and whining about free stuff. . .
David Koch
Biden speaks to the NAACP tomorrow, it’ll be a barn burner.
Joe just loves takin a 2 X 4 to Mitty’s head.
yopd1
Actually, it’s a Romney talking point.
texascowgirl
@ChrisNYC: Maybe that’s the difference between father and son. George Romney knew what it was like to be poor and an outsider. He wasn’t interested in kissing up evangelical Christians and wasn’t on board with the racism in his own faith. Willard on the other hand sees himself as a full member of “the club” and an insider. And his whole mission as a politician is to protect his “people” AKA rich white people.
soonergrunt
@scav: for them to feel uncomfotable in that context, they would have to have morals and concience.
I’m certain that the were all laughing in agreement or nodding sagely and telling each other that the childish darkies just don’t know what’s really good for them.
GxB
@Ash Can: I am afraid of how little his support would likely drop. These people are hyper aggressive, overconfident, over-assertive, psychopaths who are 100% convinced they are correct and their will cannot be denied. And judging from the last 30 years, their setbacks have been few and far between (in economics policy – don’t know how we got the social gains, really.) Somehow this attitude is Merkins’ catnip – I shudder to think who will fall on their side of the line when our collective schism snaps.
lamh35
@lamh35: I think I’m done with this now. I’ve already read what the explanation will be, cause I’ve been to blogs on our side and they are already saying that it’s obvious that Romney did not mean NAACP, that he was just spouting the generic GOP meme about supporters of Obamacare seeking “free stuff” from government. Over at comment thread at GOS, they are already saying that Rachel Maddow is wrong for reporting the original quote that made it seem that Romney was talking about “Blah” people.
Whatever. I’m done good night.
scav
@soonergrunt: I was speaking on a purely physical plane, although I guess the pain inflicted by a fat wallet on the ass of a banker is rather the polar opposite of that inflicted by a pea on a princess. Their souls are dross titanium-plated, that’s indeed a given.
Chris
@GxB:
This.
You’d have a lot of hand-wringing about how both sides do it, because black people use the word all the time in their rap music, and besides everyone thinks it’s okay to hate on white people and there’s no one speaking for the white guy anymore, and can you blame them if they occasionally get so righteously angry and a poorly chosen word or two slips out? Besides, Obama’s pastor, Kanye West says mean things about white people, Black Panthers in front of voting booth and black-on-white crime through the roof, doncha know.
pseudonymous in nc
@David Koch:
Regardless of Oxycontin Rush — a man who goes to foreign countries to leave very different deposits — having Biden there is exactly what both the White House and the NAACP audience wants. And now he has that little snippet in his pocket, which I have little doubt he’ll quote in full.
@lamh35:
Romney’s dog would have heard that whistle even when strapped to the roof of the car driving down the freeway.
delosgatos
On Bay Area KCBS news radio today, they had a short piece on Romney’s NAACP appearance today.
They noted that 95% of (NAACP members or African Americans, not sure which) support Obama.
Then they played a sound blurb from a republican NAACP attendee.
What’s wrong with this picture?
Kristin
Nobody gets more free stuff than corporations.
MattR
@delosgatos: Gotta be fair and balanced.
GxB
@Anne Laurie: Really? I don’t think they’d flinch – these people are pathological about power, and I don’t think they see themselves as anything other than exceptional examples (ie. the highest form) of humanity; and entitled to all the wealth their privileged station entitles. How Mitt and the lizard people that hold all the cards see them, however, is an entirely different kettle of fish. We shall see. Looks like we’re cursed to live in interesting times.
NotMax
@Kristin
Something Romney well knows, as included in his usual stump speech today was this:
HelpThe99ers
Well, now we truly know who he is in his heart.
A man that does what he can to shelter millions of dollars, to avoid paying his fair share of taxes.
While criticizing “those people” who want to buy insurance at affordable prices as people who want “free stuff”
Kane
Thank you, Mitt! You have no idea how much you are helping to fire up our base and expand support for President Obama.
TG Chicago
Romney: “if they want more stuff from the government, tell them to go vote for the other guy”
Hmm, yet which candidate wants to increase military spending? And who wants to give the rich even more tax breaks? So if rich people and defense contractors want more stuff from the government, Romney’s their guy.
I guess when Romney says “they”, we know who he’s talking about. He should have just said “those people”.
Anne Laurie
@Ash Can:
I’m not saying they wouldn’t take the job, but today Willard made it veryvery clear that he’s not gonna offer the job. All the equal-opportunity kabuki had been ditched for the Full Atwater, and Haley & Jindal at least are smart enough to understand that their 2012 hopes just went from ‘probably window-dressing’ to ‘na ga happin’. And I know Rubio is said to be not that ight-bray, but Cuban-Americans in my experience are as touchy about their status as the haughty Spanish hidalgos from whom they claim descent, so he can probably pick up the dog whistle too.
RadioOne
It was a cheap ploy by Romney, but it got us talking again about race again, rather than his tax returns, Bain Capital, off-shoring pioneer, etc. I think Romney felt it should appear as a Reganesqe moment. It won’t, and will be forgotten by next week, but let’s not focus on it, and instead focus on his experience at Bain, and win back the Mid-West.
Kane
The thing is, I bet Romney has received more “free stuff” from the government than most Americans.
TooManyJens
@Gretchen:
Elon James White was pissed off on TWIBRadio today because, as he put it, “Romney wasn’t talking to the NAACP. He was talking to his base in front of a bunch of black people.”
He pointed out that Romney is notorious for tailoring his views to whatever audience he’s talking to, but when it comes to the NAACP, suddenly he doesn’t feel any need to try to reach them or find common ground with them. He just basically charges in there and gives them the finger with that “wasteful spending, like Obamacare” thing.
ABL was guest hosting, and between Mitt and Nikki Haley vetoing funds for rape victims, this episode broke her.
trollhattan
“The other guy”? Shouldn’t that have been “That one”?
Party traditions, you know.
Joel
String this together with Romney’s uncomfortable “Who Let The Dogs Out” moment during his time as governor, and you’ve got yourself gold.
The prophet Nostradumbass
@trollhattan: along with a reference to “you people”.

@Anne Laurie: That would require a level of self-awareness that I can assure you Nikki doesn’t possess.

I wish I could just say-
“Government took down HITLER. And government jobs built the interstate highways. And free stuff is libraries and schools and things. What the hell is the matter with you?”
Nobody would listen unless they were already sane, is the problem…

Geez, at least Ross Perot had the courtesy to refer to Rmoney’s “they” as “you people…”

Frankensteinbeck
@Kane:
I think this is important. Mitt gave this speech to try and keep a few of the normally rabid racist voters who are tepid and uninterested this year because Mitt is tepid and uninteresting. How is this a good tradeoff against pissing off an AA community that is 95% Democratic and normally votes at low rates, so there’s a whole lot of potential votes if their enthusiasm is high?
4tehlulz
@Frankensteinbeck: I guess he’s willing to sacrifice NC in order to ensure a win in…Alabama?

How is the ACA “free stuff”? Won’t it require people to buy health insurance, i.e., you have to pay?

Mitt Romney Tried to Rig NAACP Crowd by Flying in His Own African Americans

@Patricia Kayden: The Republicans steadfastly refuse to think of it that way, and instead are convinced that it is “welfare” by another name.

Somehow Mittens I don’t think “the darkies are lazy” mem isn’t going to cut it in an age were there is a black president.
I was always curious about this little bit of white entitlement because “working like a n-bom” means doing a lot of hard, physical labor, at lest among the lower orders I am part of.

Free stuff? Like these?
Lower tax rates on upper-income earners.
Preferential tax rates for investment income.
Subsidies and tax credits for preferred industries.
Access to legislators via “fundraisers.”
Police protection, especially in well-to-do neighborhoods.
Quality schools, roads, courts and fire protection, especially in well-to-do neighborhoods.
