From friend-of-a-commentor Liam:
Meet Parker – a 1.5 year-old, spayed, small female German Shepherd. She’s healthy, weighs about 35 lbs., house-trained, very quiet, calm, affectionate and plays well with other dogs.
I’m fostering her and she’s available for adoption but please keep three things in mind:
* The adoption has to be processed through the Humane Society of Greater Miami (but don’t call them just yet).
* The Humane Society will ask for an adoption fee (I don’t know how much).
* They are going to be selective about choosing the new owner as German Shepherds are in high demand. If interested, please contact me at liam (at) liamcrotty.com (during the foster period until July 10th).
After July 10th, feel free to contact the Humane Society directly if she hasn’t already been adopted…
How did I become the foster-parent of Parker? Here’s the story:
On Tuesday I was doing a maternity photo shoot at Arcola Lakes Park in Miami and this adorable stray German Shepherd came up to me and followed me during the entire photo shoot. When I finished, I asked people in the park if they knew the owner as there was no collar or tags. Eventually, I took the dog home with me and yesterday took her to the Humane Society of Greater Miami. No one has reported her missing and she hasn’t been “chipped.” The clinic at the Humane Society did a full check up on her and she’s in great shape. They asked me to foster her for two weeks until a space opens up for her.

That’s a great photo. Parker looks like a sweetie. I hope she finds the perfect home.

WANT!! But I’m way too far to claim her. She’d be awesome on the ranch though.

I’m pleased to hear German Shepherds are in demand; though I hope she’s in good shape & not inbred. The travesties at the dog shows lately would make Strongheart roll over in his grave.
My brother and his girlfriend traveled over six states to get one of the “original” German Shepherds; what a bright and wonderful boy he is.

One of my good friends had German Shepherds as a kid and absolutely loves them. I know she’d love to adopt Parker, but she doesn’t live anywhere near Miami, and they’re kind of in flux right now, so I don’t think she could take on a new member of the family. I hope someone steps up.

Totally WANT! And even though we’re in the market for a new goggie and the ‘Burgh weather certainly feels like Miami, I’m over a thousand miles too far away. Damn, she’s adorable.

Gorgeous dog. Hope she is adopted soon.

Beautiful beastie. I spit on her to avoid the bad eye.
Ptoo, ptoo, ptoo.
May she find a worthy home.

What an absolutely beautiful girl she is. I had a German Shepard/Chow cross, my long departed Dweebe was the most precious girl there ever was. I still miss her. I am also too far away but I hope she finds a forever home.
OT but Van Jones via twitter just sent me to this video which is absolutely brilliant. I just e-mailed it to my DH so he can show it to his students.

@WereBear:
Count me as ignorant on such matters, but it is my understanding that basically, all non-mut dogs are inbred.
Isn’t that what they do? Don’t they call it line breeding….. and isn’t any high dollar puppy been inbreed for many generations?
I like the picture.
Long time ago, I used to babysit a GS for my boss. Fuckin coolest dog ever.

I have a human-related bleg if any of our B-Jers from the Chicagoland area wander in — can anyone recommend a nursing home in the Oak Park/River Forest area? My father-in-law unfortunately had a bad fall at the beginning of the week and managed to fracture his back, and there’s no way they can care for him in his second-floor apartment, so they need to find a nursing facility he can stay at while they figure out what to do. Any recommendations would be helpful.

Hey that is my friend Liam and sweet little Parker!

Gorgeous dog, thanks for fostering her! Good luck in finding her a forever home – though if shepherds are in demand, that bodes well for her!
Sorry@Mnemosyne: , about your father-in-law – I hope you find a good place soon!

@Mnemosyne: I am so sorry to hear. I hope you find what you are looking for.
@ant: There’s breeding to keep the particular breed the peak of what they are supposed to be: and in GSDs that is incredible intuition, intelligence, and sensitivity in a herding dog so versatile they set the template for police, seeing eye, and acting duties.
There’s there is today’s GSD; a slope-backed, oversized-head, prone to temperament disorders and bad hips mockery of a great breed.
I blame the AKC. For a lot.

@Mnemosyne: This is possibly farther north than you want to go, but my mother-in-law stayed at The Moorings while recovering from her knee replacement surgery, and I feel that I can recommend them. It’s a very nice facility. Many of my mother-in-law’s friends are moving there as they get to the age where they want the security of on-call staff.

OnT to the post: that is a lovely, lovely girl, and I’d be seriously tempted if I weren’t across the country. Female Shepherds are supposed to be terrific family dogs. I wish her luck finding her forever home – clearly she’s gotten off to an auspicious start by finding Liam. He must have the special mark on his forehead that only the animals and other lost little ones can see.
