Presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney will address the NAACP’s national convention next month, a campaign aide confirmed Tuesday.
News of Romney’s plans to attend the convention, which takes place July 7-12 in Houston, was first reported by April Ryan of American Urban Radio Networks. Romney is scheduled to speak on July 11.
Ladies and gentlemen, you will not see a bigger concentration of sideeye in the known universe.
Open thread otherwise.

Who’s bright idea was it to hold a convention in Houston in July? People want to get out of Houston in July, not visit.
Why is Romney doing this? It’s not like it’s going to gain him a lot of votes.

What’s the polite way to say “Democrats are the real racists” at the NAACP convention? Because that’s going to be the gist of Mitt’s speech.
Violet
Seriously, what’s the upside for him on doing this? It’s not going to earn him any more African-American votes. Unlikely to earn him any more Latino or other brown folks’ votes. Is it going to get him more white votes? Racists will see it as proof he isn’t a “real conservative”. Are those white “independent voters” going to be swayed by him speaking at the NAACP convention? How?
The whole thing seems to have a lot of potential down sides (poorly chosen words, gaffes, etc.) and not much upside.
comrade scott's agenda of rage
I’ll be the outlier here: he’s smart to go. Okay, he’s an awful politician ala Dan Quayle so this could turn out to be catastrophic but he has nothing to lose and it demonstrates to somebody that he wants to be President of all ‘Murka, not just Teatard ‘Murka.
If he bombs, it’s no big deal since he’ll get little of the AA vote anyway. If he does well, it’s a great pander to the Villagers who will talk at great length about how he’s reaching across the aisle, blah, blah, blah.
Oh wait, the Villagers will do that anyway. Nevermind.
Villago Delenda Est
The scary thing here is that as snarky as all these comments are, they are only an approximation of what he’ll actually wind up saying that will make them all look tame and conservative.

I will not hope for some obvious trainwreck, though it could happen and I am
mean enoughcare enough about the country to hope for one.Romney is so awkward in any environment that does not consist of very carefully handpicked supporters, everything comes down to degrees of awkwardness.
Along Openthready lines, I read in on the little news section of my browser homepage that Romney is not vetting Rubio for VP.
I that indicates a decision to skip over Rubio, then Romney will either pick a woman, or another awkward tighty whitey reactionary man. Either way, such a pair would make a nice decoration on a wedding cake (ha ha! I will not shrink from Truman 48 comparisons, except we have a better chance compared to that race).

John McCain’s NAACP speech in 2008 wasn’t terrible.
Then again, McCain was pushing to add teachers, firefighters, and cops in urban neighborhoods. Romney, not so much.

@Violet: What’s the upside? If he screws it up badly, he’ll reassure the chicken-shit white vote that he doesn’t belong in the world of “the black.” He’s their president not some mushy middle something or other and he’ll never have to explain why his church didn’t recognize the equality of blacks until the late 70s, i.e., should someone ever bring it up (not that they will because religion is hands off in this nincompoop country), he can avoid the question by saying, “See, they’re out to get me anyway possible.”
amk
I bet his opening lines would include some lame jokes about fried chicken.
Amir Khalid
It’s brave of Mitt to be making a speech at an NAACP convention. George Walker Bush, who screened even the people who came to his campaign rallies, would never have had the courage to try it. Although it could be the mother, father and four grandparents of all train wrecks, at least as far as Mitt’s audience is concerned.
But however awful his speech turns out to be, no one’s expecting Mitt to get heckled or booed, are they? Not at the NAACP, of all places. At worst, he’ll face only a stony silence and a perfunctory round of applause at the end. It’s not like he does much worse with white audiences. So certain quarters in the media are likely to overlook Mitt’s failure to connect with a critical audience.

Aside from the disastrous ‘who let the dogs out’ photo op, has Willard ever shown any concern for the African-American community?
Furthermore, Chris Rock rightly pointed out recently that the African-American community is far more aware than the rest of the electorate of Romney belonging to a religion that didn’t consider them people until 1978.

I’m not seeing a downside for Mitt. This is his chance to be seen reaching out to the blacks and (he hopes) getting his hand slapped in return.
No one who is going to sideeye him would have voted for him anyway, and this is his chance to play at being a man for all seasons for the press. (with the added benefit that his followers will _love_ hating on all “those people” who aren’t converted on the spot)
I don’t see him losing or winning any followers here, but the press will splooge themselves over Romney: a president for us all.

Excerpts from Romney’s planned speech:
“As you know, corporate America designed this unit to be an artificially intelligent cyborg programmed to pander to any known audience. Given recent polling data, showing 99% of black voters will be voting for my opponent, pathetic human Obama, this Romneybot unit has concluded that you fear and dislike it because this unit is not also black.”
“This unit would like you to know that its corporate masters have heard your objections to this current unit and are working diligently to perfect an upgrade to my artificial skin which allow this unit the ability to change my skin color like a chameleon so I can be more appealing while in your presence, while still retaining the ability to revert to my original shade when attempt to appeal to Caucasian voters.”
“This unit would also like to address rumors that it plans to kill all humans. This is false. This unit merely wishes to set the conditions where poor people will die of easily preventable causes in order to better make them compliant and reliant on its corporate masters. That is all. Vote Romney.”

@asdfasdf: No. Either way, he can’t win in this situation. @asdfasdf: Of course, he was invited, all candidates are invited. The funny part is he has no choice but to attend, otherwise he’d be labeled a coward. I don’t see what all the fuss is about here.
Willard has been around the “help” for most of his adult life. He knows just how to behave around such people: it’s a sign of his superior breeding.
No doubt, the convention attendees will conduct themselves in a decorous and respectful manner. Just the way the Marquis de Mittens expects the help to behave. Why, an awkward joke or two will only endear him further in their good Christian hearts.
And for this act of noble charity, Rmoney may very well be dubbed by the Village media as “The Lion King.”

@asdfasdf:
As shortstop points out, we are not being unfair to Romney, because this is not a simple binary situation. Yes, publicly refusing would be a bad decision and make him look weak. Accepting and giving a speech that’s weirdly out of touch or fake or insulting is also a terrible decision, and well worth mocking. Quietly refusing and keeping that fact out of the public sphere would be the politically smartest move, since speaking at the NAACP is a mine field for him. The only decent solution (but politically disastrous, since his own side would revolt) would be to give a sincere speech about the problems facing blacks in America above and beyond what whites face, including the racism his party works so hard to bake into the law and how he’s going to fight that.
He failed to do the ‘quietly refuse’ and he sure ain’t going to give an actually empathetic speech to black voters. So yeah, we’re going to mock him.
Brachiator
@Frankensteinbeck:
There ain’t no such thing as “quietly refusing and keeping it out of the public sphere” for a presidential candidate.
This is really not as big a deal as people are trying to make it. Maybe Romney doesn’t understand the high mockability factor here. Perhaps he doesn’t even understand how poisonous previous speeches by Newt, for example, have been.
But it can’t be a political disaster since, almost no matter what Mitt does, he will not gain much black support or probably win much white support, from his speech.

@Frankensteinbeck: I don’t think he had the choice of “quietly refusing” — that would have had the same effect as loudly refusing, and would have been just as widely reported.
My point was just that Mitt, being Mitt with Mitt’s personality and Mitt’s history, is in a must-lose situation of his own making. He couldn’t refuse to go and he won’t be able to pull the speech off gracefully. But that’s Mitt’s lookout, not ours for pointing out that he’s made his own bed with black Americans.
It won’t change but a handful of votes either way. I still plan to have a good time taking in the spectacle.
