Interesting to note that Sarah Palin’s dark horse in Nebraska literally came out of nowhere to win the GOP senate primary, but Jennifer Rubin declares this neat little fallacy as a result:
With more and more female candidates, the Democrats’ “war on women” meme becomes sillier and sillier.
Because of course draconian conservative policies on contraception, abortion, health insurance and medical procedures in general advocated by Republican women can’t possibly qualify as misogynist, same theory that Allen West’s presence as a GOP member of Congress means that Republicans can’t be racist. It’s asinine, either Rubin thinks that gender trumps policy, or that policy doesn’t matter at all.
How is this person still employed at Kapl…oh, yeah.

This is why virtually every woman of my acquaintance, ever the Republican ones, are firmly off Team Romney as of right now. They’re either voting Obama or staying home.
VICTORY! or some fail shit like that

Republicans have a woman friend so they can’t possibly be misogynistic. Sure, she has a rolled up pair of tub socks stuffed into her pants and acts like a woman’s parody of a man, but she is a women so the left is quite wrong her.

It’s such a common mistake among conservatives.
When Democrats say “Republicans are waging a war on women” Republicans hear “men are waging a war on women” so they point to Republican women. When Democrats say “Republicans are assaulting gay people” Republicans hear “straight people are assaulting gay people” so they point to a gay Republican. They’re poor listeners.
All it does is reinforce what Democrats are actually saying: it’s Republicans.
Men, women, straight, gay, it’s Republicans. Why is this so hard for them?

It really is all about identity politics to the right, isn’t it?
No wonder they think Obama supporters like him because he’s black. When you’re working with drastically insufficient cognitive resources, it might not occur to you that the pompous, faggy noises coming from his mouth have meaning that doesn’t translate into the native grunts, howls, and gestures of “real ‘murica”… Thus, Sarah Palin… And idiotic opinion columns like Rubin’s.

She is a couple kneepads and video camera away from publicly fellating Romney. In her world, black is white and white is red, and she will write anything to get that black out of the white…house.

that is just like saying the GOP can’t be anti-gay because Lindsey Graham is in the Senate.

I dunno, sounds like good news for Republicans to me.
The vast majority of Congressional GOP is tighty whitey dudes, so there is no way they could pass legislation that is bad for working poor white men, is there?
An important issue that ties all the posturing and tokenism and symbolic wedge issuing on gender, gender identity, race, ethnicity is economic class division and resulting distribution of political and economic power and autonomy. And the manipulation and exploitation of people’s tribalist fears, sense of identity, and sense of fairness that can be expected from the ‘same’ and the ‘other’ type of people in society and government.
As a wise and farsighted leader (of the other side) put it recently: divide and conquer.
Edit: I should say that I think a certain level of tribalism is to be expected, among every group that has some kind of shared identity. Especially in the high threat environment of the current economic climate, where a certain level of trust is required between groups that do not have a natural sense of shared identity in order to solve common problems.

I have it on good authority that Romney’s wife Ann is a woman. Thus, he can’t possibly be accused of supporting policies that are anti-woman.
Whew, that’s a relief.

After what the vile Rubin wrote about Anders Breivik in the immediate aftermath of last summer’s massacre (claiming him to be an al-Qaeda associate) and never apologizing once his Christian terrorist ideology became known, I do not read her any longer. I’d encourage others to do the same in the feeble hope that decline in page views might prompt her employers to take note.
I can only imagine that her “analysis” of Deb Fischer’s primary win in the Nebraska GOP Senate contest is as poorly informed.
Fischer won this race for two reasons: a recent wave of third-party advertising support from Chicago businessman Joe Ricketts; and a months-long vicious brawl between two other ultra-conservatives, state attorney general Jon Bruning and former AG Don Stenberg, both of whom had been poll frontrunners for most of the campaign.
Fisher’s victory is yet another tolling of the bell for American democracy, courtesy of Citizens United. Here’s Charles Pierce with a draft obituary:

Stuck in the Funhouse
Ar least for Heather Wilson for senate, she will have to contend with some fairly deep support for Obama in my state of NM, with likely some coat tails with O on the ticket. Once a perennial swing state for POTUS elections, it has turned quite blue since Obama ran in 2008.
New Mexico is by far the most blue state in the intermountain west, though sometimes quirky for libertarian types. It has the highest Hispanic/Anglo ratio, and hopefully is acting as a bell weather moving leftward for some other states out here, that have been largely red for national elections. But may at least be competitive for Obama and democrats.

@Villago Delenda Est: Isn’t that just the same thing?

Identity politics. Wasn’t this once regarded by Republicans as a liberal mockery of governance?
Ben Cisco
@lacp: HA!
nastybrutishntall
@Stuck in the Funhouse: In some ways, New Mexico is our future. It’s not a rich state, quite diverse, and it is blue but not blue-blood. Big populations not just of Hispanics/Latinos, but also Native Americans, mostly Navajo, who have a strong presence in the culture of the state. There is plenty of religious conservatism, but it’s more ma-and-pa Catholicism rather than MegaChurch corporatism, and more libertarian, so it tends to be a blue-collar, working-stiff positive culture. I’m just over the border in SW Colorado, and I always feel like I’m driving “to America” when I head down to ABQ out of the rarified snow-whiteness of the mountains.

Just because you’re against women having equal rights to their own medical coverage or medical care decisions to men doesn’t make you anti-women, because maybe one or more women agree with those policies, so there.

@Mino:
As I keep saying, the interesting thing about the case in front of the Supreme Court is that it forces John Roberts to choose between corporations and conservative ideology. If PPACA is struck down, corporations will lose billions of dollars, but conservatives will be able to stick to their worldview.
I honestly don’t know which one Roberts will pick. He always seemed like a corporatist to me, so he would vote in favor of keeping PPACA, but maybe he’s been biding his time to destroy the New Deal entirely and doesn’t care about the consequences to corporations.

It has been so long since I even visited a white dominated area, I have to stop and remember what it was like living in those, when I hear others discussing the bullshit that goes on in those places, that is most of the country.
Especially where I am now in Silver City, that is 3 to 1 registered democrat, and full of a variety of folks making up the multi culture atmosphere, that is largely devoid of white entitlement and the resentment that comes with that. And not a lot of wealth of the monetary kind, though not terribly destitute either, in most areas. There are no other places anymore, that I even want to visit in this country.

Isn’t Rubin one of those right wing nuts that Sully had on his week of “Ask a Wingnut Anything?” film festival?
She’s one of those completely deranged Likudniks who see an anti-Semite under every rock and can’t comprehend the world except solely through the eyes of an “Israel First!” policy. That’s she’s a complete bigot when it comes to Arab Muslims (or Muslims in general) goes without saying.
Splitting Image
@Mnemosyne:
I’m still guessing he votes to uphold. The problem though is that the variety of corporatist which has come to dominate the G.O.P. is the kind that likes to find profits in the misfortunes of other corporations. Mitt Romney is a perfect example. If insurance companies have to go down to provide vulture capitalists an opportunity to raid them for profit, then maybe they’ll just have to go down.
The problem though is that you can only tolerate this brand of vulturism on a small scale, where it arguably can do some good. Making Romney-style capitalism the entire national business strategy is a terrible idea, and the entire ACA debate hinges on whether Roberts and Kennedy are smart enough to see that. The four “liberal” justices are, and the three movement conservatives probably aren’t. We’ll know about the other two in a couple of weeks.
