Ha! The Lily is a tramp.
She’s too cute, Cole. And I know what you mean by The One. I have this big galoot of a fuzzy golden laying at my feet for whom I feel the exact same way.
Ugh, up early to drive the fifty miles to Monroeville for a regional VA certifying officials meeting. Which, because I have to drive through the city, will take me an hour and a half to two hours. I hate driving through the city during rush hour.

I suspect from the picture this dog loves you and the home it landed in, too. One lucky dog.
One of the characters introduced a meme in the strip, spoonerizing the phrase “nature’s creatures” as “nature’s screechers”, and it has stuck with me for half a century.
Walt Kelly’s humane nature came through in the animals he portrayed in this, one of the greatest anthropomorphic strips of all time.
I have realized lately that at my age I am now dealing with new generations who have never even heard of Pogo, much less read the strip.
If you have missed it, I encourage you to track it down and read it. You will not regret it. All the early newspaper strips are available in a number of different collected paperback editions, and the independently published books from the fifties into the sixties can be found with a little work. Plus there are various selected special editions collecting the best of, or certain themes.
Don’t let your lie go by without getting to know Pogo.

@HeartlandLiberal: This. Walt Kelly was one of a kind. He did stuff in his strip that I will never forget. His heirs tried to continue after he was gone, but even though you could tell that their hearts were in it, it just wasn’t the same.
#funnypagesirony: I mis-typed “could” up above, with a “g”–and the spell-checker helpfully capitalized it for me…think about it.
She just doesn’t trust you at all, does she? Such a wary, defensive beastie.

That is one yellow dog.
Walt Kelly wd surely have something to say about that.
I agree on the Pogo praise. Nobody has any idea what Pogo is anymore, and that’s a darn shame. He was the greatest political cartoonist in comic strip form.
My favorite quote from the strip: “We have met the enemy and he is us.”

And how can I not love Lily! Slightly OT–I bookmarked the first photo of John’s godson and at least once a day I spend 30 to 60 seconds letting that beautiful baby and his smile make my life better.
Lily always looks like a lady in her photos, but it’s also fun to see her looking like a goofball in this one. How great that she’s got that big yawn going at that same time that she’s lounging on the bed waiting for a tummy rub. So sweet.
Human, dog, child, cat, even a bunny… doesn’t matter what species, it’s good to love someone that much.
Remind me not to come by here if anything ever happens to this dog. I cry every time TBogg loses one of his boys. :-/
Well…someday, “something” WILL happen to this dog. It’s the cycle of life. It’s horrible, the human/dog connection, which given the natural difference in life spans, leads inevitably to heart break.
BUT I like to believe our doglets are here to teach us about loving and accepting what that means all at the same time. Love does NOT come without inevitable separation and pain, and yet it is STILL worth it. Pets teach us that over and over again, if we let them.
At least this is true of my own rescues, Ted and Hellen. When I’m consciously aware of my love for them, I often think of the fact that someday they will have to go…and that I will have to let them. And I try to embrace and accept that fact, because there is no choice other than denial, which is no way to live.
And then I hug them some more and toss another stick…

@ Clime Acts-Believe me, I know about there will be an end. I’ve had the horrible decision to make about my pets/children three times already, and have three more that will likely break my heart. But as I tell my wife, the joy they bring is worth any pain they may incur.
I just worry about Cole. This is his first, far as I know, and as they say, the first cut is the deepest.
