Remember this statement from Rich Lowry the other day:
Needless to say, no one at National Review shares Derb’s appalling view of what parents supposedly should tell their kids about blacks in this instantly notorious piece here.
Oops:
Unbeknowst to us, occasional Phi Beta Cons contributor Robert Weissberg (whose book was published a few years ago by Transaction) participated in an American Renaissance conference where he delivered a noxious talk about the future of white nationalism. He will no longer be posting here. Thanks to those who brought it to our attention.
I hate it when that happens.
Yutsano
Egg, meet face. Hopefully salmonella laden for Rich’s sake.

If anyone goes through their archives, will any of their current writers still be employed?

Mark Halperin is Atrios’ 4th Runner Up for Wanker of the Decade today.

What ThinkProgress pointed out was that this info was in Weissberg’s Wikipedia article. You really had to dig deep.
Matthew Reid Krell
The wingnuts you will always have with you.
Get rid of Derb and Weissberg, they get replaced by other, younger wingnuts eager to dine at the Koch welfare trough.
Hell, I’ve considered it myself. But I don’t think I’d make it a day with a straight face.

Do you think Rich might take a moment to ponder what it is about NRO that attracts racist writers?
Svensker
Meanwhile, Sully’s locums (loci?) have Jennifer Rubin and Charles Murray visiting. Who will rid me of these racist fuckwits?
Comrade Mary
Don’t you hate when that happens?
MattF
He must have meant ‘almost no one, most of the time, right now, as far as I know, possibly.’

Will the last person left please return the sheets.

I just read another asinine Tom Friedman article. That is all for now.

Typical Halperin. Can’t even get a bronze medal.

Jesus. They’re like nine year old children that wait until Monday morning to do their homework during breakfast and on the bus ride to school and just don’t understand why the teacher gives them bad grades.

Edited. They really should pay us for this service.

I think this is good news. Racists are being kicked out of traditional conservative journals. That’s a sign that those views aren’t being tolerated, at least in public, in conservative circles. They could have just kept on ignoring it or said, “We don’t care what our writers say on their own time.” But they didn’t.
I’m not trying to congratulate NRO for finally doing the right thing. They should have done it long ago. But it seems to me to be an indicator that that sort of racist writing, which used to be acceptable in their world, isn’t any longer.

@joeyess:
They keep using that phrase. I do not think it means what they think it means.
GregB
Has the National Review let go of cultural critic Tom Metzger yet?
Belafon (formerly anonevent)
Their policy will have to change soon or there will be no NRO writers left. Not that that would be a bad thing.
Yutsano
@Martin:
Why should they pay for the cow when we’re giving them the milk for free? Although you could get some nice wingnut welfare contracts. And share. :)
Violet
@Dave:
That made me laugh. So true.

Thing is, how long before they’re let back in once they think no one is watching or cares anymore?

Actually, I would say that everybody at NRO does, in fact, share Derb’s ideas (though the style and virulence of how they express them are different). I would make the statement even broader: the vast majority of current American conservatives share Derb’s opinions (though some don’t realize consciously that they do so). Even further, without an underpinning of Derb’s ideas, modern American conservatism wouldn’t exist – at least not in anything resembling it’s current form.
Otherwise, American conservatism would look completely different – it would be more like European conservatism: you would have three separate political parties –
1. a Liberal party that supports neoliberal (or neoclassical) economic policy. An elite party that perhaps gets 5-15% of the vote. (Liberal here meaning in an old sense of certain forms of Enlightenment philosophy)
2. a Christian Democratic party that is the broadly based conservative-esque party getting about 20-40% of the vote
3. an extremist, racist, xenophobic party of nutcases getting between 0-15% of the vote.
(Note: quite properly, in Europe, these three parties do not necessarily see eye to eye or even like each other all that much)
The only reason American conservatives could keep all three of these within one organization was precisely a comparatively high dose of racism. The racism was the reason why something like 10-20% of all Americans who really should have been Christian Democrats (and, in fact, effectively were Christian Democrats from 1930 to the the 1960s) remained within the GOP tent from the 1960s to 2006.

@The Snarxist Formerly Known as Kryptik:
I don’t know. You could be right that it’ll all go back to how it was if no one’s watching.
WereBear
A slight quibble: I’m sure it is still acceptable in their world. But the rest of the world is able to speak up and make them stop.
Violet
@WereBear:
Yeah, I’m struggling to express what I’m trying to say. I’m sure it’s still acceptable in their world too. But they are publicly saying it’s not acceptable to say it in public and still be a writer for them. That’s a shift and a good one.
Chyron HR
May I take this opportunity of emphasizing that there is no racism at the National Review. Absolutely none, and when I say none, I mean there is a certain amount.

Yeah, they replaced him with David Duke. The guy nailed the interview. Everybody at NR is glad to finally have this embarrassment behind them.

To be fair, the problem with white supremacists, is they’re white. And if you’re hanging with white people, it’s hard to tell. Plus wiki is liberal and probably his speeches are planted and besides, who doesn’t like renaissance? Pretty dresses, swords, giant turkey legs, it’s like a fairy tale, but with more whiteness.
jimmiraybob
It’s the liberal fascists at the NR and NRO purging one of the last bastions of free speech and civil liberties and free markets. The worldwide international communist uprising has begun. It’s only a matter of time before Jonah, the only man alive that knows what’s really going on and how to stop it, is disappeared. Farking Obama and his socialist shock troops and his Muslim re-education camps and his Kenyan warlord voodoo magic spells…and that kid from Memphis that started the national demise by shaking his hips to that Satanic race music lo those many years ago…and the hippies…and the uppity wimmins…and free love…….
John Cole
@gocart mozart: Who wrote that?

@John Cole: A commenter known as Joseph Yeager at NRO, in the thread attached to Lowry’s latest announcement.

These people tarnish the National Review’s noble legacy of supporting civil rights, bravely staking out this view even when such racist conservatives as the National Review were opposing them and focusing mainly upon calling MLK Jr a “Communist”.
monkeyfister
Not as well-known as Mr. Cole’s return from the Dark Side, Charles Johnson, of Little Green Footballs, has also undergone a very fine transformation. This particular story is and dismissal is directly attributable to Charles. He’s been doing incredible work of chasing down the racists in the Right-Wing “mainstream.” Bravo and welcome back to Mr. Johnson.

@Svensker: Yeah, apparently the Daily Beast has no problem printing the hateful language of racists.
