It’s been a while since we had one of these. If you need a job, post some basic info and your fellow Juicers might be able to help you out. If you know of an open position or one about to open, post the basics and maybe one of your fellow Juicers can either help you out or knows someone who can.
For my personal experiences, the best jobs site I ever used to get civilian jobs was www.careerbuilder.com but of course, you all should be putting your resumes and information up on www.usajobs.gov so that you can get a good job with good benefits working for the best employer in the world, the American Taxpayer.
Also too, open thread.

Longtime lurker, here. I’m the same at the Great Orange Satan’s site, with a 4-digit user ID # that almost never gets TU status. Lurking is what I do online.
Anyway, I’m an environmental scientist in Portland, Oregon. But I’ve been unemployed for two years, filling my time with volunteer nonprofit work and the like. Unemployment just ran out. I’m currently in school pursuing a graduate certificate in Fisheries Management, but prior to that I was doing endangered species surveys, wetland restorations, habitat monitoring, and some groundwater monitoring and related contaminant work at industrial sites.
I have a home and two special needs kids, and a nearby disabled family member to take care of, so leaving town for a job isn’t an option.
Anyone know somebody who’s hiring for fishery work or environmental-type work in my town? URS, Columbia River Inter-tribal Fish Commission, ODFW, OPRD, whatever?

My partner has his AA degree in Hospitality Management, and some experience in IT troubleshooting and support, as well as cooking experience. He is looking for any kind of non line cook gig near Chicago. He’s a very hard working, get stuff done, used to busting his butt in a kitchen environment. He’d be willing to do an intern/apprenticeship type deal for electronics repair, or any other IT type position. (He’s learning Java right now, and studying for his A+ cert.)

@Ando_Chronic: PLEASE seriously consider the Veterans Administration for employment. Our need for psychologists, as I’m sure you know, will only grow over the next several years, and psychologists with military experience will be even more useful with a patient population that can tend to distrust people who don’t understand them.
Additionally, your military time in service counts towards retirement eligibility, and leave calculations. We have a college loan repayment program, and government employees can have the remainder of their loans forgiven after 10 years of service.

Recent graduate of Virginia Tech (2011) with a degree in Aerospace Engineering (minor in Math). Looking for any mechanical/aerospace/oil-gas-alternative/nuclear jobs out there. So it’s gotta be entry level. I’ve applied to over 1,500 jobs and have had a few contacts with Rolls Royce, General Dynamics, Boeing and Lockheed, but nothing’s come up. Any help would be appreciated!
Oh, I currently reside in Virginia, but I’m willing to re-locate anywhere.

Hello fellow Balloon Juicers! My name is Aaron Fown, and I live in the Ann Arbor area of Michigan. I’m a molecular biologist, plant biologist, and plant pathologist, with some experience in the lab and in agricultural/forestry settings. I’m just getting started out of college, and this job market is killing me! I tried to delay my entry a bit with a post graduation project to develop my AV skills and explore some of the advances in green farming and eco-concious construction (check it out at http://www.thetripforlife.com). I apparently didn’t delay enough, though, because jobs are still scarce in this area.
I’m also a photographer, and some of you no doubt have seen my work; the adorable bunny (Joey!) on the cover of the Balloon Juice calendar this year is our house rabbit. I specialize in available light photography, but that particular shot was done with a bounce flash to help freeze our typically hyperactive bun.
If anyone has a lead on work in any of these fields, or in green industry in general in southeastern Michigan, please drop me a line. I am happy to work, and eager to change the world for the better.

This isn’t my job, but I saw it posted and thought it looked like a good job in an industry that doesn’t have a lot of openings. And dammit, we need more liberals here in Nashville. Hey, it’s not SO bad here, honest!
So FWIW:
Entry Level Landscape Architect/Designer
Hawkins Partners, Inc. (Nashville, Tennessee)
Position: Entry Level Landscape Architect / Designer

Collaboration is key, whether in our own office or as part of a larger multi-disciplinary team, and we are looking for someone who fits within this dynamic. We are looking for a creative problem solver who is passionate about landscape architecture and urban design, and is eager to contribute in a fast-paced, fun environment.
REQUIRED SKILLS:

@Soonergrunt: The VA would be my dream job, we have an excellent one here in Minneapolis as well. To work with fellow vets was the main reason why I chose to study psychology. I do not plan to go for a Psy.D. right out of the gate though, I’m stopping at Master’s for now. There is a hitch with the VA system though; it requires some particular certification which only one school here in MN. offers (St. Cloud State). I’m planning on going elsewhere for my Master’s. I understand that the loan forgiveness programs are great on the fed. side, but I may have to work for a private clinic which is then contracted by the VA to work with vets if I can’t get that particular certification that the VA wants. Any thoughts?

@Ando_Chronic: Well, you may need to work for a Community Based Outpatient Clinic, or maybe for a state VA. I don’t know if MN has a state VA, but OK, CO, and a lot of other states do. At least until you get that certification, but usually that’s something that can be waivered, at least during the initial year probationary period, or even longer if necessary.
Your best bet is to talk to a VA clinical recruiter. You can contact them on the VA Careers website:

@Hillary Rettig: The woman whose blog you linked to in a previous Balloon Juice Jobs Thread, I think here name was Penelope Trunk is completely bat shit insane. Someone recently forwarded a link to her latest screed about how divorce is for stupid people, to me. I remembered that you had suggested her blog as resource and out of curiosity I perused the rest of the blog. In it I found gems like how staying with an abusive spouse is OK and why reporting on sexual abuse is bad. I also found out that this so called career expert is out on some farm in Wisconsin, homeschooling her kids while living with an abusive man, who is not even her husband. Do you still stand by your recommendation?

But, if you present as female both socially and legally, then I’m not sure there’s any mechanism for a federal employer to determine that you weren’t born female – at least not until you need that background check. But presumably the matter would come up before then, giving you an opportunity to explain.

@Thatgaljill:
Actually it reminds me of Github sorta getting hacked recently, and I’ve yet to jump on the startup/Ruby bandwagon…

@Gus: Would like to apply. I am in Los Angeles. Never thought of myself as a fanboy, but I have been using Macs since OS 6.5.3.

And usajobs.gov wants me to scan and upload a copy of my DD-214, which obviously has a different name than my current name. *Sighs* why is applying for Federal employment such a pain in the ass?
Amanda in the South Bay
@Matthew Reid Krell:
I ended up putting “I am a male born on or after January 1, 1960 and I have registered for the Selective Service.” since its the only option that affirms that I did indeed register for the Selective Service as a teenager, and all of the other options say “I didn’t register for SS because of blah blah blah.” Of course, the DD-214 that I need to scan and upload has…a name that isn’t Amanda on it, so yay this’ll really be fun.

@Amanda,
It’s the 30 questions that re-affirm that you really really really (x30) aren’t a current federal employee that irks me. We get it, federal employees change offices a lot and have tightly-managed qualifications/experiences. Please either make them have a separate form or something…

Coming out of lurking again, figured I might as well try this. I’m employed, but not exactly working in a field I enjoy right now, so a change of pace would be good for the soul.
Writer/editor/theatre person with lots of experience in journalism, editing, book layout, and grant writing (especially in environmental engineering fields). Wrote some award-winning book and movie reviews back in the day in my college.
And I have over ten years radio production experience and a top-rated public radio jazz/funk/blues show to my name — the only trouble there is I was trained in North Dakota, where the radio hardware is literally ten years behind the industry curve. But once I’ve mastered any of the new tech, the skills are still the same.
I’m happy to relocate nearly anywhere if it’s to get a job doing something I love doing. No family here since I was stood up at the altar, so nothing holding me back but nowhere to go at the moment.

@Belafon (formerly anonevent): Every place I’ve applied it’s been the same thing: “You have no experience, so blah blah blah.”
I’ve already looked at companies, it’s just going to come down to someone on the inside saying, “Yeah he’s legit.” No one’s giving me a chance because I have no experience.

@TX Expat: Test was in June and was straightforward, (did not do prep classes) daresay, easy, the personal narrative/essays were not too hard (Aug) and the orals were last month, my first time for all, but there were several who were taking it a 3rd, fourth and fifth time… I think 3/12 got offers to continue on my day. Anyway with a 20+ career all over the world, I can see how some of the questions that they might ask at the orals and some of the situations they pose may be challenging for those without wide and deep cultural exposure, management ability and a breadth of experience. Your time at AUC should fit the bill. My firm’s got nothing in Baton Rouge att.

@Raven: There is an online college that offers the certification through their graduate program (I forgot what the cert. and the online college are called), but you’d have to do their entire grad. program to attain it. The idea and concept of online education doesn’t bother me; however, I do really like the in residence experience, especially for social science programs. I’ve checked around and have yet to find a stand-alone certification process. A fellow vet and student at my school who is going for his Psy.D. has the idea of starting a clinic which would do in home house calls for vets. There was a StarTrib. article just last week discussing the lack of psychologists and resources in the rural parts of MN. and how mental health service access out-state is really difficult to acquire compared to the cities. I could only imagine what the conditions are for veterans in the rural parts of the state are like as well. We’ll see what happens. Happiness can often be found in the journey as well!

I strongly recommend that anyone in the LI/NYC area apply to Geico. I’ve worked for Mr. Buffet for over a year now and can assure you that it’s a very different experience than any other job that I’ve had…even got to meet him last month.
We’re currently hiring for sales, service and claims positions, no specific experience required other than the ability to communicate and multi-task.
If you want more info, feel free to email me: robroserny at gmail.

@Datacine: Here’s the place to start. The opening I’m talking about hasn’t yet been posted. You’d be training new and existing users in the use of our software. Send in a resume describing your capabilities.

Shot in the dark, but here goes.. Environmental policy recent graduate (Political Science & Environmental Studies) fluent in Spanish and with solid non-profit experiences. Looking for anything, anywhere, but strong preference for something at least tangentially related to policy. Solid writer, excellent team-work experience & very motivated :) Maybe someone out there knows of something?

@Ean: Have you tried university publishers and academic presses? Oxford University Press in the New York City division had a job posted last year that combined academia and digital management, IIRC.

Everyone looking for a job should join LinkedIn, fill out all the information, and sign up for your alumni groups and whatnot. It’s free unless you want unnecessary extras.
I received an unsolicited job offer earlier this year off LinkedIn, and I wasn’t even looking.

Hrm, QA positions in Seattle would be nice, if anyone’s got a lead.

@Phil: USAJobs…look up Dept. of Interior. Or you sound like a good candidate for Foreign Service, just based on education.

This is a good site for jobs in academia: http://www.higheredjobs.com/ Please note that it’s not just for Faculty. If you are interested in non-Faculty type jobs (IT, Facilities Management, Finance, HR, etc.) then click on the Administrative (and/or Executive) options and search from there. You can search/filter by Location, etc.
Some states are also hiring. Here’s Maryland: http://dbm.maryland.gov/jobseekers/Pages/JobSearch.aspx
Good luck.
Also thanks to Soonergrunt for putting this up.

@Cassidy: Thanks for the advice! their page seems to have a lot of broken links right now, but I’ve made a note to return later

@Cassidy: good luck Cassidy! My fingers are crossed for you and all of the juicers tryin’ to get that paper.

@noodler:
Thanks for the info. Sounds about what I expected. Like you I have 20+ years of work experience along with my education and language skills so I think this might be a good fit for me. Of course, the track I’m considering is the most competitive one they have (political officer) so I’m a little nervous about my competition. Guess I’ll find out come February.

@BethanyAnne: And I should add, it appears OpenText Red Dot skills seem to be really rare, so we expect to train the person – mostly we just need a very good Javascript programmer.

I’m looking for a web developer with graphic design skills to help stand up a new small business web site. I’d prefer a simple page template that I can duplicate and alter as needed. No too-clever-by-half AJAX or DHTML, Flash or related middleware, animated windows or similar unnecessary fluff that amounts to nothing more than a statement of “look at how awesome my web dev is”. :) The site I have in mind should be able to have been written ten years ago. KISS.
The actual text and product/gallery content of the site I’ll plug in myself; what I really need is a professional-looking layout and a basic ecommerce cart, preferably using some kind of scalable drop-in solution that I can administer myself like Magento. There are only a handful of products; this is not a big operation.
I have some basic web design skills and can maintain a site and make simple changes–I’m just no good at layouts and I’ve never stood up an ecom platform from scratch.
I do not have a huge budget but I can offer a fair wage for the amount of work required. Open to suggestions. Major bonus points if you’re good at designing logos.
Linda
@a hip hop artist from Idaho (fka Bella Q): Yes–from time to time. There is also the Center for Non-Profits in NJ. Thanks!!

I’m going to give this a shot, because, hey, why not? I’m a long-time reader, but very infrequent poster here, but you all seem like good people, so maybe someone can help me out.
I’m 27, and a graduate of St. John’s University Law School Class of 2011, but have since been somewhat ambivalent about pursuing a career in law. So, I’m open to suggestions as to alternate paths to pursue. I live on Long Island, and can easily commute to New York City, if need be.
I just need someone to give me a chance to do something, because I have no particular experience (I was a pizza delivery boy until deciding to go to law school), but I know that if someone gives me a chance, I will do the absolute best that I can, and I think that would be pretty good. But I’m not a salesman, or an actor, and the whole “selling yourself” thing is just not something I’m good at, so I’ve had a hard time figuring out how to get anyone to give me an opportunity.
Anyway, if anyone has anything that they know of, I would appreciate it immensely if they could email me at [email protected]. Thank you all so much for doing this, not just for me, but for everyone who is in need right now.
Have a great weekend!

I’m a 22 year old pianist living in San Francisco with some college under my belt, however tuition costs at my local Community College have more than doubled in the past two years so I’d really much rather spend my time making an income than be gouged for a diploma that may or may not help me get a “real job”. So if anyone’s still reading down here and is interested, email [email protected].
Cassidy
I can’t say enough to people with any kind of law, business, computers, science degrees, etc. You really need to look into federal law enforcement, even as support staff, and the State Dept.

@Catsy: I’ve asked Mr. Q, who does a fair amount of small business sites if he’d like to take a shot. He hates the too clever by half stuff and is allergic to Flash, so I suspect you have similar ideas. You can email me at FLSgreen at gmail if you’d like and i can give him your contact info.

Still looking for accounting work here in Minneapolis. I have a master’s of accountancy (not an MBA). And there’s probably no point mentioning the IRS, as I’ve interviewed with them twice and they never called me back.

I know it’s late but there was a job thread yesterday and the new Caterpillar plant that is opening here in Athens, Ga is starting to hire. Given the high level of education of many of the folks that posted yesterday there may be something of interest.
For information on these early employment opportunities with Caterpillar, all of which require a four-year college degree and some significant experience, go online to http://www.caterpillar.com/careers/job-opportunities/job-search. Open positions include factory, supply chain and logistics management, engineering management and materials supervision, and other management-level work.
Roxie
Well, this thread left me with no replies. Alas, It’s very hard for a person with a past like mine to even get an interview. This country was built on second chances. I thought people would be rooting for me and eager to help a person in my situation. I changed my life from being a hard core poly user to a person who won’t even touch a drop of alcohol. I’ll just keep plugging away.
WaterGirl
@Roxie: My suggestion is to apply at small mom & pop organizations. They are unlikely to have an HR person and strict rules, and you might just find someone who will give you a chance.
Hang in there. I am rooting for you!
Cassidy
Roxie, we need more information. You work hard and that’s great. Everyone here works hard. What do you do? What are you trying to do? That aside, look up the CSX sit I mentioned earlier. They have lots of jobs all over the country, most of it physically demanding work.
BethanyAnne
@Roxie: I hope you find something soon. Fraid all I have is computer geek stuff (and computer geek stuff always requires stupid-specific skills), and even that is in Texas. Still, things are picking up all over. You’ll find something. I do computer geek stuff for a restaurant company. Have you thought about kitchen work? Restaurants have been a good second chance for tons of folk.
Roxie
@Cassidy: After my release ib 2007, I was hired as a route driver for 2 small bakery companies in SF. I also have plenty of restaurant experience (front and back) I’m going to school part time for an IT degree. I was out of the labor force for 15 years due to running crazy on the street prior. Recently, I applied for a job for a ballot signature collector but was turned down for my past. It seems Sacramento is much more strict concerning past records than San Francisco was. San Francisco is considering a law that would prohibit any employer from questioning applicants concerning their past criminal record. It would lead to more people in my situation landing an interview. “landing an interview” has replaced “landing a job” in my vocabulary.
Marking that dreaded box on an application, won’t separate me from an ax murdering pedophile. The importance to me is the fact that my last two employers hired me after seeing my past crimes were drug related and seeing the twinkle in my eyes that hinted that those days were behind me. Tons of people who are facing the same situation as me finally give up and go back to their old ways. Not me. I have been clean since 2007. One day at a time

My dream is to work for a social or political organization that is fighting the good fight. I would even start as an intern (paid or unpaid) in order to gain experience. I’m also thinking of offering to work for private companies for an unpaid salary during a probationary period, to prove how valuable an employee I would be. I am desperate.
