George Will made this observation yesterday on This Week with Old Conservative White Males and George Stephanopolous:
While Rick Santorum said Limbaugh’s comments were “absurd,” he said the radio host was an “entertainer” and “an entertainer can be absurd.”
“No,” Will said about Santorum’s response. “It is the responsibility of conservatives to police the right and its excesses, just as the liberals unfailingly fail to police the excesses on their own side.”
As usual, of all the candidates for President, only Ron Paul had the guts to say something that the base can’t stomach, when he stated the obvious, that Limbaugh only apologized to keep advertisers. One-trick pony Gingrich blamed the elites in their enclaves on the coast because, in Newt’s world, all bad news for Republicans is their fault. As Will noted, Santorum called him an entertainer, while Romney said it was “not the language he would have used” (meaning what–he would have called her a harlot?).
Those three seem to forget that they’re running to be the guy best suited to take Obama to the woodshed. The base driving around with their “Nobama” window decals and “Anyone Else in 2012” bumper stickers wants someone who can show the world what they believe in their hearts, that Barack Obama is the emptiest of empty suits. But if one thing has been clear from the endless debates, and now Slutgate, it’s that Newt and Mitt, and probably Rick, don’t have the sand to do that. Both Gingrich and Romney have been running scorched earth ads making charges that they don’t have the guts to repeat to when they’re standing face-to-face. Santorum is happy to attack abortionists and the gays, but I haven’t seen him go after any of his opponents.
In short, as Dick Nixon would put it, when it comes down to the nut cutting, these guys run away. If they can’t stand up to a radio host, or repeat their attack ads in person, how can they call out Obama? If you want to explain why the primary has been a see-saw ride, look no further than the constant and consistent gutlessness of the three main players.

Uhm…
George, as usual, you’re full of sh*t!
We on the left have no radio equivalent of “The Round Mound of Sound.”
We on the left have no TV equivalent of 24X7X365 FOX News. Sure, we get a few evening hours, and weekend mornings at MSNBC – but that’s followed in the morning with ‘Cup O’ Schmoe’s’ show, where he usually tries to counter Liberal reason with Conservative gobbledygook, aided by Mika, the Stockholm Syndrome victim co-host.
And Ed Schultz’s apology for calling a woman a slut was a lot more of a heartfelt apology than Rush’s attempt to salvage advertisers.
It’s too bad that Snow White Bachmann dropped out.
And also that some other dwarfs did.
At least it was entertaining while it lasted.
Now, we’re left with Christ-y (Rick), Crazy (Ron), Sleazy (Newt), and One-Eighty (Mitt).
Look at Obama, and he looks Presidential. Only Mitt does on the other side. The others are a joke.
But the problem with Mitt is that he’s like the fake salami hanging at the counter of an Italian Deli – looks real – but is hollow inside, and completely inedible (unelectable).
Well, Republicans, this is like what Rummy said – ‘You go to political war with the popguns you have, and not the nuclear missiles you want.’
You had 4 years – and THIS is the best you could do?
Up until their anti-woman rants of the last few weeks, I was worried about Obama’s reelection.
Now, I’m much less worried.
I’m also now more hopeful that we can hold the Senate and take back the House.
THANK YOU, REPUBLICANS!

But Paul waited longer and had a better indication that people wanted His Festering Highness to be strongly rebuked. Paul’s rebuke would have seemed like leadership if he had lead with it promptly instead of commenting after the storm had passed.

Mittens, Newt and the Frothy One have no stomach for having to approach the Golden EIB Microphone on their knees and then applying their lips to the twin bungholes of the Leader of Dildo-Head Nation, like every other ReTHUGlican who thought he had the stones to publicly criticize the Pigboy has had to do to keep their office.

“If you want to explain why the primary has been a see-saw ride, look no further than the constant and consistent gutlessness of the three main players.”
The weirdest thing to me is how they avoid totally winnable issues. Newt Gingrich called Sonia Sotomayor a racist. Santorum and Romney aren’t particularly good on immigration reform, but they could’ve scored huge points in the Latino-themed debate in Florida pointing this out. Could’ve down so without angering the base. Similarly, Gingrich and Santorum have pretty regressive economic plans (not even going to think about where Paul’s America would be on that scale), but they’re nothing compared to Romney’s latest tax proposal. The other day I estimated how Romney’s plan would redistribute income — goo.gl/2KQLg — the poorest 20% of Americans lose around four grand in health benefits and the richest 1% get 150 grand in tax cuts. Santorum’s got a quasi-believable populist thing going on; he’s lagging in the polls a bit. Why wasn’t he blasting every Sunday show hitting Mitt for cutting taxes for the rich on the backs of the poor? Again, there’s plenty of ways to do so without sounding like a Democrat.
Shawn in ShowMe
Cowering before Rush or sandbagging the primary debates has nothing to do with their willingness to call out the Kenyan Usurper. They are all members of the tribe while Obama is The Other.
Santorum, in particular, would love nothing more than to raise his Christian Soldier freak flag during his debates with Obama. Little Ricky is a true believer. Newt would glady attack the Prez because he is a mean little man who’ll never forgive the Party of Clinton for his fall from power. He’s already foreshadowed his game plan with the Food Stamp President and Saul Alinsky jibes.
It’s Romney, friend of the common man and Nascar owners and creator of a health care system that looks a helluva lot like Obamacare that lacks sincerity. He doesn’t believe a word he’s saying and even the most clueless wingnut can smell the fail.

The thing is, who’s making money off of this? Every time this BS starts up my e-mail box is flooded with “Rush said something dumb, show you won’t stand for it by donating to …” (MoveOn, ActBlue, Emily’s List, etc.)

Our system is set up for this. No one talks about policy, everyone talks about hysterics. That’s where the ratings are. Our national conversation is so stupid. Rush called women sluts, well it’s not the first time. Why don’t we just turn him OFF? Turn off Joe Scarborough and all of these idiots?
Gah. I’m so sick of it.

George Will:
This is only half right. I agree with Will that it’s conservatives responsibility to police their own, because they’re the ones who want a police state — and they ought to lead by example.
But why should liberals police the excesses of our side? We believe in excess. There’s a reason a large helping is called a liberal portion. Personally, I’d like liberal wages, and liberal salaries, and liberal health benefits, and liberal educational opportunities, and liberal pensions, for everyone.

She was trying to talk to a Congressional committee, and they wouldn’t let her, so she talked to a videocamera. She wasn’t talking to Rush, she didn’t mention Rush, she didn’t respond to Rush when he insulted her, she didn’t engage him in any way. Undoubtedly that’s the best way to deal with the man, but why on earth would you view this whole thing as some sort of fight between the two of them — is it the logical extension of “both sides do it”?

We have unemployment standing above 8 percent, the economy remains (for now, but what bright light is that ahead at the end of the tunnel?) sluggish, and if one wanted to one could make hay out of the need for deficit reform at a time when discretionary spending is, depending on how you want to present the stats, as high now as it was when Reagan took office. You could go after Obama on his weak support of Israel, his squishiness on Iran, the decision to abandon Iraq, the slog in Afghanistan. You could grab the populuist reins about gas prices and bailouts and stimulus and a host of other things having to do with paycheck matters, and of course, you could go after Obama for the biggest expansion of healthcare spending on a program that hits the President hardest on the core philosophical issue of the size and trustworthiness of Government.
And while all of those attacks — to be clear, all of them — would be, of course, wrong factually, they would be at least something that would appeal to some segments of independent voters who may, just may, be driving these wrong-track numbers.
But no. Instead, those Republican fools have to go after contraception, which hasn’t been a focal point of cultural debate since 1968, and in the process call a dignified young private citizen, who the vast majority of men and women can identify with, a slut and a prostitute.
I swear to God, if I were to pen a novel documenting the kind of absolute political incompetence the Republican Party has subjected the American public to in the past few months, it would be rejected by any publishing house as utterly incredulous. Laughable. Other-worldly.
I have never seen a party — and this includes the Democrats, which says a lot — so completely bereft of self-awareness and so totally, totally fucking tone deaf. It is to take one’s breath away.
I hope the Republicans keep their freak flag flying, because at this rate they will make the Whigs of 1860 look like a formidable electoral power.

Obama is going to win in November. And he’ll then spend his second term doing what he’s done in the first: making sure the plutocracy is well rewarded and protected.
I predict that he’ll get those Social Security cuts he’s been jonesing for his entire first term, probably in exchange for some portion of the Bush-Cheney-Obama tax cuts for the wealthy.

ever wonder what kind of dirt Rush has on the GOP that they are so terrified of him?
ellennelle
ya know, i have some very conservative friends, and i have to tell ya, not a single one listens to rush, and moreover, not a single one would listen to rush. they actually do not like him and find him to be a festering a**hole.
which i find interesting, given the ratings this guy claims. but funny thing, those ratings can’t be substantiated; there is no evidence for them. this is true across the board for radio, so they can assert just about anything they like.
which leads me to loads of questions, like who’s paying rush limpboy 40 mill? yeah, he’s got that link to romney, but that’s a whole lotta jack, especially when clear channel is hemorrhaging money and laying off staff.
another question is, how did his show land the armed services plum? how do you get to be the show of choice for the military? do you pay for that? if so, whom, and if not, who decides and on what criteria?
another question is related, and brings in fox (how does fox get the airports and hotel lobbies?), to which the previous question also applies: do these radios and tvs that are apparently rigged for rush and fox get factored into their reported ratings?
how does all that work? it seems – not to mention potentially destructive to democracy – but also all smoke and mirrors to me, prompting a very excited anticipatory thrill at the prospect of someone pulling back the curtain.

@ellennelle: These are excellent questions, Ellen. I would suspect that Limbaugh’s company has aggressively sought deals that guarantee him payments and access to markets. I think he has paid to air in some markets before. (At one time–in the 1990’s when he was quite in demand, they paid to get him.) I think there are a few blogs that follow local radio and keep an eye on him.
I don’t think Fox is the only one in airports. All of the major news channels do airport versions, I think. That’s going to depend on management. Check out cable channels at hotels. Depends on chain. Some will block MSNBC.

ABC News: 7th Advertiser Pulls Support for Limbaugh’s Show
Okay, so some nice tidbits here. His syndication company has a contract with him until 2016. They are running around screaming “Spee Freech!” Clear Channel is now owned by venture capital. Bankrupcy in future? Well, Limbaugh’s show is contracted to the syndicator which is a layer of protection, but CC could go into Chap 11 and renegotiate their contract with the syndicator, I suppose.
Also, too, unlike previous attempts to make Limbaugh pay for his horrific excesses, this one finally has legs (thanks, Susan Komen Foundation!) and seven mainstream advertisers have pulled out. Limbaugh’s getting paid by contracting advertising for big buxxx based on supposed national reach, even if he has to pay cash money for that reach in some markets. Kind of a like a newspaper that gives papers away on college campuses b/c nobody’s buying so they can juice their circulation
liesfigures. If even twerpy George Will is piling on it seems the invincible Limbaugh has finally met his Waterloo moment. Pile on, y’all. (Remember last time, when a bunch of Republican manly men had to make like spanked little boys and apologize for calling Limbaugh out? Not this time…)

as for msnbc, first of all, not sure it’s blocked, but i’ve often wondered why we have to pay extra extra to get it on cable. what’s up with that? is it another case of top-shelf payment that msnbc won’t pay? i’ve tried to discover the answers to these questions with feeble googling, and was totally unsuccessful. would love someone with resources pick up the story and run with it.

Gays, guns, and god has finally backfired. The promoters of it never thought it would backfire because authoritarians like that imagine that their temporary control of the unhappy is really permanent control of everyone. They think if they raise their children “right” they will be mindless little puppets. This never works, btw.
Gays–a new generation came up, said “fuck this” and even turned their parents into supports of same-sex marriage. Oops. They ran on that one issue for thirty fucking years.
God–a new generation raised up entirely in the new fundagelical environment is not rejecting God but is rejecting religion. Top reason given: church people. Allying religion with politics has, as the conservatives warned decades ago, abased both and delegitimized religious leaders. Oops.
Guns–Democrats wised up (or became more craven, you decide) but the truth is that urban gun violence is way down, so the pressure from urban activists to do something about guns has largely evaporated. Which means that for younger people, gun bans are like the boogeyman under their bed that never does jump out when the lights are on… plus there’s the entertainment value of watching the goobers overpay for ammunition because Nobummer’s gunna taek ur gunz away. Lol.
So what DO they have to run on? Love the job creators. Fear the job creators. Oops, economic crash destroyed that one. Frankly, most people have become agnostics, no longer believing the holy writ that job creators CREATE jobs. INFIDELS!!! Youyouyou come back here! You didn’t even kiss my bishops’ ring!
Speaking of bishops, the RCC has now fully committed themselves
to the cause of evilsupporting Republican candidates who pledge to blur the lines between church and state but they’re doing it without their flock. It’s been a long time coming–and they were already political destroyed in many of their fastnesses, such as Massachusetts, but this year is the year they finally jumped the shark. I hope we see same-sex marriage soon in RI (the RCC was the sole power blocking it).Just on that note, if the RCC cared so much about social justice, then why is RI such a shithole? Admidst all the wealth of New England, RI has the worst economy, worst life (it seems) for the poor, and laxest tax system. Okay, so it’s not a social experiment like NH’s attempt to run a society purely on nastiness and bile, but it is so so sorry, for a place where old money plays. At least MA takes the attitude, “Oh, so you had enough play money to buy a YACHT? Hrm, how about a donation to the blind widowed orphans fund? 7% would be just about fair. And you can write it off on your federal taxes. You decline? Tut, tut. It’s the law. It’s going to a better place, trust me.”
And it does. I mean, that BRCA corruption slush fund doesn’t fill itself.
No, seriously, just kidding–it buys some pretty damn good government. (Not kidding about corruption either–that’s why we need a real opposition party, not just crazies.)

@ellennelle: I don’t know that much about cable, although in a basic sense I think the cable carrier is paying the cable companies fees (which are passed on to you) which somehow still turns into AE doing 20 minutes of advertising for each 40 min of program (much of which recaps on resume and teasers before stopping, so more like 30 mins of real program. LAME). The cable company also sells local ads which it runs in place of national ads.
