ABC News reporting that LA Coroner’s office says he died shortly after midnight last night of natural causes. Condolences to his family.

Also, treat his death better than Andrew Breitbart treated Ted Kennedy’s death, at least.

How is that natural to die at 43? Either he had a heart attack (which wouldn’t surprise me with how angry he always seemed to be) or something else entirely.

I left this comment in the prior thread, but it’s more appropriate for this one, so:
I have decided to believe that his untimely death is another data point, along with that meltdown he had at CPAC, in confirmation that there really was something seriously wrong with the man. Lack of blood flow to the brain can cause all kinds of unfortunate things, from erratic behavior to paranoid delusions. The poor man was just having a series of strokes in public, and couldn’t help what was happening to him.
Poor bastard.

Good riddance to bad rubbish.

@Kane: If this was part of the press release from the hospital it was likely due to an MI. While 43 is very young to die from an infarct, it still falls within a “natural” cause of death as opposed to drugs or alcohol (the leading causes of an “unnatural” death).
About 25-30% of folks die from their acute MI. Still a surprisingly high number.

When Lee Atwater croaked, I didn’t refrain from “speaking ill of the just departed”. Some people’s actions in life don’t demand we adopt some artificial social decorum simply because they kicked the bucket. If Limbaugh died of a massive heart attack tomorrow, you can be guarandamnteed we wouldn’t be following said decorum regarding his death. As noted above, Breitbart wasn’t much better, he just didn’t have the radio syndication gig to disseminate his asshole rantings to a wider audience.
His family, different story, too bad for them.

As to natural causes being fatal at 43. My dad explained that one third of the men who die from heart attacks are in their 50s. Reason apparently being that they don’t think they are old enough yet to have to downshift on bad health habits.

Natural causes could have been a heart defect or high risk factors coming together to cause stroke or myocardial infarction or sumpthin.
He was an angry, red-faced dude, never a good sign for one’s health. If he drank a lot, or smoked, that would have hastened the work of those “natural” causes.
I don’t blame the family if they don’t want the details of the cause of his death all over the media. He was a minor figure, when all is told. I kind of hoped he would be gobsmacked into sense, like our esteemed host was, and Charles Johnson was. Directing that anger and energy to fight a good fight would have been a blessing.

I disagreed with pretty much everything that came out of his mouth. But my thoughts are with his family and friends. Folks lost a dad, spouse, sibling, friend, etc. last night and that is devastating.
That said, though I am stunned at this news, I am sort of not surprised. Being deeply, deeply enraged/outraged 24 hours a day, 7 days a week has got to burn your candle out pretty quickly. “The last time someone died of natural causes at age 43 was in the 1400’s, I think.”
Natural causes != “old age”.
Natural causes is anything that isn’t from an immediate external cause. Overdose would be “accidental death” or “death by misadventure”. Death due to a lifetime of bad eating habits, smoking, and drinking to excess would also be “natural causes”, so long as they didn’t die because they drank too much, passed out, and choked on their own vomit.
UncommonSense
Dead at 43 from natural causes. Wow.

3. “Big Government broke the ACORN child sex trafficking scandal…”
It’s hard for family to lose someone so young but I, a stranger, am resisting the urge to spit on the ground.
…adding, of course, that all the signs point to him being a damaged man that probably struggled with depression and unhappiness. That’s what I’ll try to remember about him (after or alongside his contribution to modern society).

I’m sure that he was absolutely lovely to his family and pets and that they are grieving right now. I hope that they find comfort in whatever they believe in, and that they learn from this and turn away from the very ragegasm behavior and serial dishonesty that defined Andrew Breitbart’s life. Because Breitbart was a toxic person whose existence benefited almost no one outside that small circle of family and pets, save for a few other toxic personalities like Dana Loesch, James O’Keefe, and John Nolte. Hell has just filled one more special place.
elmo
@gnomedad:
I’m quite serious that I have decided to believe that; not entirely serious that it is, in fact, the case. I genuinely don’t know.
To me, the value of believing it is twofold: it allows me to pity the man, and his family, which is a more congenial emotion toward the recently dead than hate; and it has the added benefit of casting everything he did as expressions of mental illness, which I devoutly believe he would have found intolerable.
And yes, I freely admit those two ideas are somewhat contradictory. I am large; I contain multitudes.

Re the addendum to this post, serious question, Zandar: presumably you’re acquainted with Breitbart’s full record. You know the relentless way he destroyed the careers and reputations of innocent people, the role he played in vote suppression efforts, the screaming joy he took in all of it and the fact that he wasn’t about to stop. What is the point of putting up a thread about his death and then telling people they can’t negatively review this man’s character and record? Seriously?

No matter how much I despise someone and what they stand for, I would never wish for anything bad to happen to someone, ever. But I can’t deny that my first response was not “oh, no!” as it usually is when I learn on the internet that someone has died.
Instead, my immediate response was “if this is true, it’s a good thing.” I am not proud of that, and I don’t think I have ever had that response before.
Now I feel kind of sick to my stomach after reading the ABC news article Zandar linked to above. He was certainly excited about his life and was thrilled that he was making a difference, and those are things I admire.

In the hours immediately following Senator Ted Kennedy’s death, Breitbart called Kennedy a “villain”, a “duplicitous bastard”, a “prick” and “a special pile of human excrement.”
Does that mean we can return the favour?

I’m not a doctor, but no matter how much you dislike the policies or a President or a movement, the amount of rage he seemed to harbor, and unleash, did not strike me as at all healthy.

This. I just have issues with the idea of celebrating death, no matter who died and how vile they were. I’ll accept the bloodless utilitarianism of someone’s death being a net good in the long run, but unless it’s a welcome release to someone who lived a long, fruitful life and deserves their rest, then….yeah, no celebration. No mourning, but no celebration.

Y’all realize that if you speak ill of the dead on the GOP side, then you lose the right to take offense when they dance in the streets for one of ours? Just sayin’.
My sympathies to the Breitbart family.
(And last time I checked, a heart attack counts as a “natural cause”. Perhaps the family just doesn’t want to release the details.)
Schlemizel
As for the cause of death – younger folks tend to die from their first heart attack. Not just because they don’t think they are having one but mostly because the mechanisms that caused the attack are much more damaged. Either there was something wrong with them or they were predisposed to the issue. I had a good friend who went out at 38. He had time to call to his wife that something was wrong and was dead before she could cross the room to him.
It does not have to be drugs. And if it were rage I would have been gone 20 years younger than him.

Breitbart struck me as somehow whose rage preceded his alleged anger at Obama or black farmers or the Left. I certainly wasn’t unhappy that Bin Laden was gone. He and those who worked with him killed hundreds of people for no reason and without remorse.
But I can see some people thinking some of the celebrations were less than dignified even for an enemy. I can see some people concerned that such would offend Muslims, who while not sorry bin Laden was gone either, might have taken some offense at the crassness. Some wondered if he could have been captured and tried. But no one missed him or wished he was still alive.

Here in my neck of the woods that would make it around 2 am.
Shortly after 2 this morning, I was awakened by a crash, tinkle and din of an antique, silver candy bowl that was full of change. Of course this also set off a chain reaction of the scurrying and bounds of 3 cats that lay on various parts of my body. Needless to say, this whirling dervish of sixty claws all at the same time left me a hot mess of bloody slashes and deep, penetrating puncture wounds, and standing in the middle of the room in my boxer shorts, cursing anything that moved on 4 legs and threatening to combine their pelts and make a fucking hat.
Considering that I have been convinced for some time now that I and I alone was being trolled on the internet and teevee by Breitbart every time he wrote something or said something outrageous, I blame Andrew for the bloody, shredded mess that sits before this computer and types this post.

So fuck this recurring nonsense about how people shouldn’t speak ill of the recently dead. That notion has merit when you’re talking about someone in the presence of others likely to be personally hurt by it. When talking about controversial or toxic public figures–especially on blog comments–it’s a trope that does nothing but aid in the whitewashing of their ugly records. His supporters certainly aren’t going to waste any time writing his hagiography and fixing that in the public image.
Breitbart was a relentlessly hateful and dishonest piece of shit who has caused immeasurable damage to this country and its politics–to say nothing of the innocent people and organizations whose reputations he destroyed.
This country and our political discourse are a healthier place for his passing. It is and will remain the best thing he ever did for America–as well as a strong argument in favor of the existence of karma.

Breitbart was a relentlessly hateful and dishonest piece of shit who has caused immeasurable damage to this country and its politics—to say nothing of the innocent people and organizations whose reputations he destroyed.
This country and our political discourse are a healthier place for his passing. It is and will remain the best thing he ever did for America—as well as a strong argument in favor of the existence of karma.
Good riddance.
Once again the socialists regale us with their ‘superiority.’

Publicly crowing and gloating about Breitbart’s death brings us down to the level of Breitbart and his jackal pack of attack dogs and gives them ammunition to use against us when they nutpick the comments. We are supposed to be better than that.
Not crowing and gloating is not the same as whitewashing the fact that he was a shrill partisan liar who ran with poorly sourced stories and caused pain and suffering to a good many people and actively did evil in this world. It would however show that we are classier than those of his ilk. It also gives Breitbart an importance and significance he doesn’t deserve.
Let’s save the venomous bile for when a much larger and more influential serpent passes, one who is heard on the radio for three hours everyday and is the spiritual and intellectual head of the current Republican party.

@Rafer Janders: my personal belief is that such people experience the suffering they have inflicted on others during the death experience or sometime soon thereafter – since, at that time, they can no longer physically and mentally separate themselves from the rest of humanity and the spirits of those they have tormented or worse, their consciousness is inserted into the souls and minds of the others they have wronged, they experience the suffering from the victims point of view and finally comprehend the scope and magnitude of what they have done. the more people they have affected, the longer, more arduous and horrifying the journey through each soul affected by their horrible crimes.

That said, am I sorry that Bin Laden is dead? No. Do I think we did anything wrong in killing him as part of the raid? No. I felt no sorrow, no outrage. Nothing except relief that he was gone and pride in our president who had the balls to make that tough call. He was risking his entire political career, and his ability to govern our country, and he knew it. Balls of steel.

Here’s Jonah Goldberg’s epitaph:
“He was the modern conservative iteration of a 1960’s radical,” conservative commentator Jonah Goldberg told Fox News, minutes after Breitbart’s death was reported.
Wait, I thought 60’s radicals were bad guys. This just provides more evidence for the belief that modern conservatism is a post-modern and revolutionary belief system like Maoism or Soviet Communism.
“When I say he was the most fearless guy I ever knew, it really is true. I mean, he truly loved the fight,” he said.
Well of course it’s true Jonah, you’re a fucking coward who spends his time hanging around fucking cowards. Perhaps if you had gotten off of your fat, lazy cowardly ass and joined the military, or Hell, if you just cut mommy’s apron strings and went out to make your own way in the world you’d meet some people with real courage and wouldn’t be saying silly things like this about Andrew Breitbart, who was another chickenshit conservative.

I bet dollars to doughnuts one reason why people are being so respectful of his death is that his demographics-male, late 30s-mid to 40s-ish-is probably the most prevalent demographic on Balloon Juice. And I bet most of them are going through the sorta mid life crisis that this kind of thing brings out-the people who partied a lot earlier in their lives, are now living in the suburbs, and are thinking “OMG death is so near!” or something like that.
Of course I hope most (all) of those people in that demographic lead much healthier lives of exercise, not using coke, and moderate alcohol consumption. But that does seem to the the BJ demographic sweet spot. Hence my eye rolling at all those posts by DougJ of obscure bands from the 80s, but that’s another story…

Breitbart was born in 1969, so was around 32, depending on his birthday, at the time of the September 11th attacks, and 34 when we attacked Iraq. He wasn’t too old to enlist, if he really believed we were in the existential fight he claimed we were. So it seems he didn’t love the fight enought to, you know, actually fight it.

43 — Natural causes? Wtf?
Pretty shocking news for someone that wealthy to die so young. I’m pretty skeptical personally.
Will speak ill of the dead. Fuck it. The man targeted legitimate organizations in his scorched-earth quest to destroy liberals. He ruined ACORN, which doesn’t even really do political organizing. It’s an organization that helps homeless people find housing, and does income tax returns for the really poor, among other, mundane, but necessary services.
He tried to destroy the reputation of a good public servant, and an organization with a rich history NAACP. All based on what’s the opposite of the truth.
He tried to destroy one of the best news organizations of our time. Again, with lies and deception. He slammed NPR for bias, while his contribution to the journalistic world the Big Government, etc. sites are a caricature of Fox News.

Between this and James Joyner’s wife, I’m a little freaked out, because Breitbart and I were the same age.
On the other hand, I have very low blood pressure, no family history of heart disease, and I’m very close to the top of my BMI range, so the likelihood of me dropping dead of a heart attack is fairly low.

About the nicest thing you could say about him is that he didn’t make the world a better place. I’m sure this is a tragedy for his family. But given that he chose to devote his energies to destruction rather than creation of anything of value, he won’t be missed by the rest of the world.

Agreed. I don’t see his death as any kind of victory against that side. The qualifications for his job were “angry, stupid and without any devotion to the truth.” There are no shortage of candidates to fill his shoes. His passing will result in exactly ZERO reduction in the right’s capacity to traffic in lies.

Josh Marshall’s needs-an-editor-as-badly-as-ever post notes that Breitbart tried and failed to engage him via tweet last night. A quick look at AB’s Twitter account reveals that he was blustering and braying at people almost up to his death; as usual, the tweets get more bizarre as the hours past first cocktail add up. His last day on earth, like the others, was fittingly wasted.
Marci Kiser
This walking ragegasm had a wife and kids? Great. So did Osama bin Laden (actually, OBL had more of the former and latter). Funny how the ‘husband and father’ club was never used to beat people when they cheered his death.

@Jim Treacher: But plenty of people who suffered for Breitbart’s shitty actions in the world can be reached for comment. The difference between him and you, Jimmy, is that Breitbart’s death is worth a couple of threads and yours won’t rate but a comment or two in a pre-existing open thread.

Here’s an attempt to make something positive out of him, or at least his death…
I never knew that he was adopted but if he died of natural causes at 43 he may have been predisposed for a health condition and never known it? Why? Because it is often difficult for adopted children to access medical records from their birth parents if those records exist at all. It could have been really important, maybe Breitbart would have been more wary of heart disease if he knew he had a genetic predisposition. A small thing to change, but one that should be. The parent putting the child up for adoption could still be kept confidential, but their family medical history should travel with the adoption records.

liberal
@Winston Smith:
Probably the strongest argument against dancing on his grave.
Samara Morgan
@Jim Treacher: and conservatives can’t ever “win” the “culture war” or “take back culture”, no matter how many dirty tricks you use.
Because culture isnt a steering wheel you can grab on to wrench back onto your conservative path.
That is what Big Hollywood was, Breitbarts attempt to “take back culture”.
Culture is not a steering wheel…it is a multidimensional reflective surface.
Liberals will always beat you in the culture wars because they are just being part of culture, being themselves, just trying to write a good book, make a good film, write and perform good music.
I dont think Breitbart ever understood culture at all.
Samara Morgan
@liberal: you and winston are wrong.
Breitbart was an avatar of a kind of culture warrior who would do anything and say anything to “win”.
i think Big Government and Big Hollywood will whither and die without him.
and that is a thing to eminently be desired.
Catsy
@liberal: It is only a strong argument against dancing on the graves of evil men if you agree with the premise of the argument: namely, that Breitbart’s passing “will result in exactly ZERO reduction in the right’s capacity to traffic in lies”.
How so? That there is no shortage of bile and mendacity on the right is not news. But few right-wing smear peddlers are as successful or influential as Breitbart was, or as capable of commanding undeserved credibility from the media for his lies.
Sure, ten more wingnuts will try to step into his shoes. That doesn’t mean they’ll be successful at doing so. This is a net improvement in American politics and society no matter how you slice it.
Corner Stone
@Jim Treacher: Was it Teddy K. who tried to run you down in the street that one time?
Or did he contract it out since you’re such a powerful voice for conservatives?
Winston Smith
@Samara Morgan:
I would like to agree with you, but I can’t. Don’t forget that Breitbart was not really self-created. He wrote a fan email to Drudge, and started there. He then became the beneficiary of Wingnut Welfare™. There are plenty of grubs ready to transform into a new creepy-crawly. Breitbart just wasn’t that special. Heck, the people who paid Andrew will probably save his widow by giving her his position. Really, how hard is it to be slightly more crazy than Erick Erickson and slightly less crazy than Joseph Farah?
Joe Bauers
“Also, treat his death better than Andrew Breitbart treated Ted Kennedy’s death, at least.”

I hope for the sake of whatever sad, lonely people who have nothing positive by which to judge and therefore love you that you’re not too close to 43.
