Mr. Cole, what on earth were you doing living in that godforsaken Queen City of the Hudson? I grew up in Poughkeepsie, and it’s best viewed from a rear-view mirror.
And I always thought Maddox and Mason were far more to blame than Sharpton for the Brawley debacle.

actually I also checked into the Westminster dog show. “Woolly caterpillar wins best in show” does seem to kind of sum it up:

Dayum, you can never tell what wild thing will happen next on this miserable lefty blog. People see that clip of Tunch earlier today devouring Cole alive?
Horrible. What a way to go. Gives me the shivers.
I guess Cole is no longer with us, eaten alive, as he predicted many times, by his voracious fat white cat. Yet Cole still blogs. That is dedication.

I kinda tuned out on my alma mater (Union) when they lost back-to-back games at Denver and ColColl over New Year’s. Checked in today and was shocked to see that they are in first place in the ECAC and ranked number eight in the country. They can clinch the regular season title with a win at Cornell next Friday night. Which would trigger a large amount of shit-giving to my kid brother who is a one-time Lynah Loonie.

Not doing much here tonight. We’re starting to get back to normal after SamKitten had some random kid bug for about a week. Since Tuesday, he’s eaten 4 fig newtons, 4 soda crackers, and 1/8th of a peanut butter sandwich. Most of that was in the last two days. He’s on the mend, though. Me? I’m fucking wiped after a week of him waking me up every 20 minutes for the last 4 nights.
Tomorrow I clean, and then tomorrow night I play a bit of FFVII (yes, I know it’s painfully out of date, but it’s still a damn good game).

I’m reading this blog, drinking UV Cake Vodka (oh. my.) and visiting my brother-in-law in Yuma.
Today we went to a little festival in San Luis, just this side of the Mexico-Arizona border, ate tamales, watched a great Elvis impersonator (John “King” Kruk!) and snickered at the Republican Party tent with only three people in it and only one person stopping to talk to them, and judging by his body language he may not have been in agreement with them. There was a banner at the back of their little pavilion, next to the Republican Party one, that proclaimed themselves to be the Tea Party, with the slogan “Strike back Arizona!” This is a place where almost everyone in town is not white and English is their second language; the nice lady selling drinks didn’t recognize the word “cold” and I had to dredge up the right word in Spanish, “fria”.
At the same time there were lots of people hanging out across the little park at the Democratic Party Tent, lots of people having a good time, selling food to support the HS marching band and various charities, met Miss San Luis, probably got a sunburn.

Let the boys camp out in a tent in the living room tonight. Youngest lasted twenty minutes then wanted to go upstairs to bed. Oldest one passed gas loudly, then five seconds later yelled out, “I just farted in the tent.” Ten seconds after that: “I think I better go to the bathroom.”

@jl: I don’t buy the ironing story. I knew a couple of people in the army who ironed their underwear (both t-shirts and boxers), but they also tucked their t-shirts into their boxers so I wrote them off as weirdos. For the record, I know how to iron and am rather good at it.
gwangung
I sorta know how to iron, and am kind mediocre about it….but I figure that’s good enough to raise my usual slovenly mien to something higher than it normally is.
CaseyL
@handsmile: I assume you mean the 1973 version? If by some horrible mischance you’ve never seen that one, and are basing your opinion on the 1997 remake, then get thee hence to a rental outlet (Redbox, Netflix, I don’t care) and check out what I insist is the Only True Film Version.
zmulls – Best wishes to your wife for a complete recovery; and watch it with the ironing, because if you do a really good job at it, it might become your job permanently :)
Yutsano – I sympathize with and appreciate you’re not showing up with a flu bug :) and very much look forward to seeing you on the 10th!

Why persecute this poor man on the basis of your baseless speculation, based on a recital of an episode in your personal history that I frankly find rather dubious, Sir?
Did he say he needed ironed undershirts to tuck into his boxers? Did he say he was ironing boxers? Did he say anything about even wearing boxers?
No, he did not say any of those things.

As far as the godawful 90s version goes, I saw it in Columbus, Ohio when it came out and John Kasich was sitting in the seat directly in front of me; he was a House member at the time. Yes, I do regret not kicking the back of his seat throughout the movie.
CaseyL
@Omnes Omnibus: Yes, I do regret not kicking the back of his seat throughout the movie.
Well. He probably seemed very small beans at the time, hardly worth the effort – though at least it would have given you a distraction from watching the abomination on the screen.

Omnes Omnibus
@CaseyL: Nah, he was a well-known local asshole even at the time. God, was that movie horrible. The book is stunningly good page-turner and the ’73 does very good job of bringing the book to the screen. (FWIW I caught a couple of temporal errors in the movie as I was watching tonight; both involved cars appearing on screen that did not exist in 1963. Weirdly, both cars were Alfa-Romeos, the same make that the Jackel drives in both the book and the movie. They were in the background, but it appears that I am a total nerd and noticed.) The 90’s version… Ack!

1. Getting the television out of the back seat of my car. I still can’t believe my friend took a week to get her schedule cleared to get her *free* TV. The spoils of generosity is a crowded backseat and a frozen appliance.

@Yutsano: My surgeon didn’t use the term microdisectomy, from from his description that’s what he did. And he didn’t do any fusion.
I have a friend who had a laminectomy when he was in the Navy, about 1975; the surgery to excise the disk was as much to find the site of the problem. MRIs have changed the game completely. He couldn’t believe my scar wasn’t even 2 inches; his was close 5.
Anyway, I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you and send good vibes your way.

Sure. Gaffa’s Hot Scotch Toddie Recipe in the Works Recipe:
one part single-malt Scotch
four parts water
one lemon, juiced
two cups of brown sugar per 5 cups or so of liquid
chives, plenty (but I love spice)
fresh nutmeg
Not a very original one; I’m playing around with adding/subtracting citrus fruits right now, and lemons are my current fruit of choice. Combine in a Crok-Pot and you can fiddle and mess with it all night (or day) long as it simmers and stews and makes nice smells at you. Cinnamon didn’t work for me.

I organized things and have everything I can do nailed down, but it was a hell of a week. Next week with the election itself should be fun as well and then the following Monday is my divorce hearing. Is it any wonder I tried to invent a cocktail this weekend?

@FlipYrWhig: You aren’t knocking Karen O, right? I am pretty sure she is aware of Chrissie.
@Gaffa: Good lord! Please do not make a hot toddy with single malt. Send the single malt to me and I will mail you a good blended scotch that will serve your purposes.
Gaffa
@Omnes Omnibus:
Alas, I am out of single-malt because I made too many hot toddies. :(
Me and my friends were nicely warmed, though.
Might try one with brandy next. Or more single-malt…hmm…

@Gaffa: HI Gaffa, welcome to our little corner of hell. Glad you finally jumped in.
I love the new Sherlock and can’t wait for the second season. And I LOVE the Doctor. David Tennant was my favorite, but Matt is great. I think the show has gotten snappier, and maybe even wittier recently. I’m really going to miss Amy and Rory, I think they gave the show a sweetness and heart. The Doctor’s Wife was my favorite episode ever.
I’ve got Game of Thrones on my netflix queue, and am looking forward to it, though I never read the books.
I spent all evening going through my local Obama groups mailing list, to see who I could find and friend on Facebook. (I’m the digital person for our group.) And it was a pain, going in, trying to find like-minded folk with usually just a first initial and last name, pegging the locals and then trying to decide if they are really the person I was looking for through their info page and their walls. And then sending a friend request. I think out of 75 or so email addys I had, I only sent 8 friend requests. And no one has responded yet. SO I’m feeling kinda needy, LOL. If anyone wants to friend my group we’re EShelbyTNforObama on Facebook on twitter we’re @EShelbyTN4Obama. I just post interesting links about bad Republicans running for President, good things Obama has done and the occasional silly stuff, like 10 pictures of dogs diving in a pool for balls.

@Gaffa: After googling, I have not seen my new drink. I, therefore, name it the Omnibus. It is:
1 shot or so of brandy (whiskey may be substituted)
1/2 shot of lemon juice (adjust to personal taste)
Top off with ginger ale
Serve over ice.
ETA: If you have seen this before, please let me know.
Yutsano
@Gaffa: Allspice and clove should play quite nicely with the blend. If you’re feeling really adventurous and like the slightly resiny backnote a few juniper berries will work as well. Have to agree with OO on the single malt: save the dinero and use a blend.
Gaffa
Yeah, cloves would be good. Think I’d like that more than the allspice.
I’ve never seen the Omnibus before, nor tried it, but I will brew one up on Monday to see how it goes! More power to your creative self!
DeeL: Thank you for the greeting. I loved The Doctor’s Wife, and will be very sad to see the Ponds go, but I remain convinced that the Doctor is in very good hands with Moffat. He’s even brought the Daleks down to a bearable level.
That being said, while the Game of Thrones TV show is quite good (and I’m really impressed with how well they managed to edit a huge book into just ten eps), the books are even more fun than the show. Heavily recommended in both incarnations. Except for the new(ish) video game. Horrid little game, just with the GoT name tagged on. Ugh.
Dee Loralei
@Omnes Omnibus: I love ginger ale, it’s not used nearly enough.
Here’s my contribution: (It’s kinda sweet and has a bite.)
It doesn’t have a name, but in lieu of my previous assertion that the Dr.’s Wife was the best Dr Who ever. I’ll name it for her.
The Dr.’s Wife Julep
Fresh mint leaves bruised with a bunch of ice, 4 1/2 ounces bourbon or whiskey, 1 1/2 ounce of Honey Jack, 1 ounce of lemon simple syrup.(Equal amounts of fresh lemon juice and sugar heated til the sugar is melted.) Shake the crap out of it, to further bruise the mint leaves and get them to release their oils. Pour into a glass or silver beaker full of crushed ice, add several thinly sliced pieces of jalapeno pepper, one in the bottom of the glass, and at least one on top, that way the pepper oils permeate, and land on your lips, so you get a peppery, lemony sweet surprise that knocks you on your butt after two drinks. And it’s minty, for fresh breath! LOL
Omnes Omnibus
@Gaffa: The drink will prevent scurvy.
I was impressed by how well the GoT series adapted the book. Tyrion is even more entertaining in the books. Although Dinklage is abso-fucking-lutely brilliant.
Gaffa
So many nice looking drinks! Thanks!
I am also working on perfecting my recipe, currently called “broiled asparagus-stuffed squid on a bed of chili” because that’s exactly what it is. Reports from friends (no family, alas) is that it’s quite tasty, but like all kitchen tinkerers, I am not yet satisfied.
Meanwhile, here at work, I console myself with a microwave burrito (“an Emperor Hirohito-burrito-ito…” “Thanks, Joel.”). How sad the night.

I’m getting in to my office.

i have given up finding a simple fake pearl necklace for a reasonable price.
simple things that are also affordable and without all the hoo-ha, these days, are sooo hard to find.

ok, Santorum issues dog whistle that Obama is, indeed, a Muslim.

@Lojasmo:
Watch out, Lojizmo. ABL or some other overly sensitive twit might start a blog jihad for your demeaning use of a lady bits cleaning procedure.
Now run along and gargle some vinegar and water as the bile you’re belching is probably making your breath reek.

@harlana: If Jay Carney is asked about it Monday, I hope he quips Santorum sounds like Sarah when she was campaigning about real and fake Americans.

i like the “young people” at my job. I’m old enough to be their mom. They are so smart and so together and so conscientious. Since I am around them so much, it used to make me ponder how stupid I was and how much potential I wasted in my younger years, and that made me very sad. It made me think of where I might be right now if I had exercised my potential to the fullest.
But I feel better about it, I’m treated with respect as a permanent employee and I work for a 29 year old girl who is an “angel”. Things are very fluid there, don’t know where I will end up but I feel pretty secure that as long as I do my job and do it well, there will be a place for me!
I can’t emphasize enough what long-term unemployment does to a person’s psyche. That’s why I am very sad about the cuts to long-term unemployment benefits. This will be counterproductive to any stimulus effect a middle . That tax cut of $1,000 is a little less than the average unemployment benefit for 1 month.
Like others here, I DO believe a government works program on a large scale would be in order, esp if you are going to cut benefits 6.5 months. That might offset some of the terrible effects of these cuts. But, of course, we can’t do that – it’s soshulism.

Geez – all the FPers, even John, must have had a restful nights sleep! Not sure the last time I got up in the morning & discovered I DIDN’T miss an interesting thread!

What’s the opposite of lavender? Some more thoughts on the gay rights movement, but not nearly as nasty as the next-to-last one.

@harlana: According to one of the yearbook editors from The GOP High Panderers (aka Cincinnati Enquirer), Santorum gave a “patriotic” speech in GenericExrbanHellhole Trace.

@burnspbesq:
Yeah, The male Gophers are in an odd spot. They lead the WCHA but are 17th in the pairwise so they may not make the NCAA playoffs. There are other WCHA teams they have beaten & who are lower in the league standings ahead of them in pairwise. I guess they have not beaten teams by enough goals or lost non-conference games or something.
The women are rated #2 in the country behind the dreaded Badgers. Their record against Wisc is 2-0-2(2) so we are hoping they play for the national championship. We have our tickets for both the WCHA and NCAA womens championships. The woman’s game really is superior to the men’s but there is a huge drop off in talent after the first 6-7 teams. We need more young girls to pick up the game.

Rick Santorum just came out against amniocentesis. I mean, Jesus. Just when I think they’ve fallen off the edge of the earth these conservative crackpots find a new way to surprise me.

@Omnes Omnibus: The SNL musical guest looked like she was trying to do an impression of Karen O, whose own style is a (knowing) pastiche of old rock-chick styles.
