This whole passage of the payroll tax cut extension etc. deal, that is all things considered a victory of the white house, isn’t it?
A few months ago I would not thought the white house would get such a good deal.
Another FBI terrorism sting operation has led to the arrest of a man who believed he was plotting an attack on the U.S. Capitol. Justice Department spokesman Dean Boyd confirmed to TPM that there was an arrest of a suspect in connection with a terrorism investigation and that the arrest “was the culmination of an undercover operation during which the suspect was closely monitored by law enforcement.”
Chalk another one up in the Obama column. Suspect thought he was carrying out an al Qaeda mission.

It’s a pretty good deal. Even the offsets aren’t bad – mostly cutting what the government will pay for Medicare/Medicaid services, which is what they want anyway. It’s interesting how bipartisan the vote was in both the House and Senate – we haven’t seen that in a long time. Obama might actually get some shit done the next few months.

Personally, I was hoping that Santorbum was resigning because Mitt promised him Health and Human Services.
Reading Bobo, one wonders how religious people succeed at anything since they are all so humble and could drop everything any minute and go take care of the poor in Calcutta. (CNN) – Newt Gingrich’s campaign released a new ad Friday directed towards the Arizona Latino community, ahead of the state’s February 28 primary. The 30-second spot, “Latinos with Newt,” features four Hispanic supporters detailing why they want to see Gingrich in the White House.
“We owe Barack Obama nothing. Many of our people have lost their jobs. Others have lost their homes,” one supporter said in the ad, as an image of Hispanic workers sitting idly on a curb appears on screen.
Ha ha. For some reason it is amusing me to elaborate on this whole thing….they give him one of those ranks and weird titles militia guys like….they give him an “explosive” vest filled with leftover Valentine’s candy….they tell him the chicks are absolutely going to go for him afterwards, that this time it’s all going to be different….

Yeah. But I think they’re also grasping with the idea that 2010 might have been a huge outlier. Look at amk’s post up above. Look at the polling leading into the election. Consider that the GOP might have a pathetically weak candidate and the Dems have the energy this cycle. They’ve got to realize that they’re in trouble and need to win voters back.

I’m choosing to regard this Guardian article, “US Officials believe Iran sanctions will fail, making military action likely,” as just more saber-rattling, particularly as the article’s principal sources are anonymous.
Officials in key parts of the Obama administration are increasingly convinced that sanctions will not deter Tehran from pursuing its nuclear programme, and believe that the US will be left with no option but to launch an attack on Iran or watch Israel do so.
Surely any sentient being realizes that any significant military action between Israel and Iran, much less between the US and Iran, is nothing other than a global catastrophe. But then again, a Friedman Unit ago, what sentient being would believe that Rih Santorum would be the leading GOP presidential candidate or that contraceptive use would be a main topic of Village media palaver.
Yesterday a bipartisan group of 32 senators signed a resolution “to reaffirm the unacceptability of an Iran with nuclear weapons capability” and to oppose “any policy that would rely on containment as an option in response to the Iranian nuclear threat.”
And in two weeks, Bibi comes to town to headline AIPAC and to demand fealty from the leadership of both US major political parties.

I was thinking today how much we take contraception for granted, yet how important it is for modern women. I am only the second generation in my family history where I have had the choice as to how many children and when I would have them. My grandmother, and I assume all the women before her were always prisoners of their biology. She had 9 kids and god knows how many miscarriages. Looking after the kids was all that her life was about. That’s it! There was nothing else. She was not unique, most women had that life. If any man tries to bring back that life back for my daughter I would like to kill him. I cannot believe that in the 21st century, in the US, a country which was always a beacon for scientific advancement there are hearings going on trying to deny contraception to women. And I can’t believe what a burning hatred I have for that row of dressed up jackasses I saw yesterday.

Not quite the same thing as baptizing people you don’t know, and making it a regular practice of your religion.
Mormonism with its history of polygamy and the dead people baptizing sounds positively creepy but most organized religions give me a worried.
If you think organized relgion is bad, some of the disoranized brands are even worse. Kazooism, for example. Gave up organs for use in church around 1782, first in favor of bells, and then the kazoo.
In 2008, Santorum said Satan was taking over and destroying America, starting with academia, then Protestant churches (he would later amend that to “mainline Protestant),
He did say that the R.C. church was safe from Satan. I really want someone — like a journalist — to ask him specifically which mainline Protestant churches have been taken over by Satan. The Presbyterians? Lutherans? Methodists? I would love to hear his answer.
Though this may make you even more enraged in retrospect, it’s not that contraception wasn’t available, it’s that women were kept in ignorance that it existed. Margaret Sanger always said that the reason she started Planned Parenthood was that, while she was a nurse, she was actually forbidden from telling her patients that they didn’t have to have child after child after child, that there were devices like diaphragms and condoms that could prevent pregnancy.
The real birth control struggle has always been a struggle to let women know it exists, because the actual methods have existed for hundreds of years.

So you deny that it was rape then, since I was the one who told you about it. OK. So you’re concern for women is contingent on their political usefulness.
