What are your five favorite blogs that aren’t about politics?
Mine are New York Cork Report, ProFootballFocus, Dappered, Can’t Explain, and the Rochesterian (occasionally about politics, but mostly more general local content).
I’m constantly surprised by how much more I learn from reading blogs than by reading newspapers or magazines.

Balloon Juice is a nice little gardening/food/cooking/booze/music/pets/artsncrafts/and miscellaneous blog.
The people who run it are crazy, and many ways it sucks, and the operation is total amateur hour, but I recommend that people check it out, even if only for amusement.
Edit: It has some political posts, but I can make no sense of them, they seem completely incoherent, and so ignore them.

Love Charlie Stross’s blog over at http://www.antipope.org/charlie/blog-static/. Which might or might not be a reference to a Damned song. I’m giving Charlie the benefit of the doubt, since he’s cool like that.
It’s occasionally political, but mostly about science, sociology, sci-fi, technology, and other stuff. Don’t always agree with his take on things, but I mostly do, and he’s always thought-provoking. Sort of like a better-informed, nerdier, Scottish Andrew Sullivan with a sense of humor.

One of the greatest sites on all the internet is Cloudy Nights , a website by and for amateur astronomers, observing the night sky, telescopes, eyepieces, etc. Highly knowledgeable, experienced people will literally fall all over themselves helpfully answering any question a beginner (or even much more experienced) person might want to ask about astronomy or equipment. It also has quite a few side-forums about other non-astronomy interests and a fun off-the wall “Off-Topic Observatory” about anything interesting or fun anyone might want to discuss. The ONE firm rule there is NO DISCUSSION ABOUT POLITICS. PERIOD. It keeps people who have lots of common interests outside politics knit in a tight, supportive, friendly community who would otherwise be at each other’s throats within three or four exchanges of posts. Membership registration is free of both cost and any sort of commercial exposure e.g. to unwanted emails or solicitations, etc.

So, we have the feds going after Megaupload, but leaving YouTube alone.
We have the tech community alternately saying that existing laws are sufficient, or that NO laws should restrict the InterTubes.
And you have Congress, the president, and the media companies insisting that SOPA and PIPA and more are absolutely necessary to protect IP rights, even as the feds and foreign authorities plan their little action.
Doesn’t seem that there is yet any clear message to be read here.

Tough call as my RSS reader is quite full of good blogs. These are all food related since that’s what I blog and think about the most:
Cooking Issues is probably my favorite cooking blog, though the posts are not particularly frequent and are not always applicable to the home cook… however I always learn something and you can’t ask for much more than that.
Ideas in Food is probably even less applicable to the home chef since they often are using really fancy “modernist” equipment in their experiments, but their posts really get me thinking about the process of creating a dish that the rote following of recipes does not.

Wil Weaton’s WWdN: In Exile – where he talks about gaming, acting, being a complete geek, and other subjects
The Bloggess – possibly the snarkiest person I have ever read, who I found via a link at Wil’s place
Making Light – run by a married pair of SF editors; the posts and commentary are often on political issues, but also on social issues, literature, history, etc.

@Brachiator:
My view, at least for the moment, is that the takedown of Megaupload pretty definitively makes that case that SOPA and PIPA’s Draconian enforcement tools are utterly unnecessary.
I also think that when we look back on this day a few years from now, we will see it as the beginning of the end of Anonymous. Fucking with the United States Department of Justice hardly seems like a winning strategy.
ETA: Why go after Megaupload and not YouTube? Two fairly obvious reasons. First, YouTube has a decent fair use defense with respect to a lot of its content. Second, YouTube has a bigger and broader constituency, and they vote.

Yep. And yet the media companies will continue to insist that SOPA and PIPA, or something like it, be passed to deal with all those “terrible pirates.”
I thought that Anonymous might get some extra attention when they hacked STRATFOR, a foregn policy blog used by people with a serious interest in defense and related issues. The subscription lists includes some major players inside and outside government. Yeah, messing with DOJ appears to be major league dumb, but these people seem to be fearless.

Lots of intriguing blogs to explore in all my ample spare time, but I especially want to thank PPOG Penguin (Got Medieval) and cmorenc (Cloudy Nights) because those are interests that I wish to deepen.
I suspect this thread has now unspooled, but earlier commenters have been so generous and so imaginative that I’d like to offer up a few of my favorite non-political blogs, sites I usually visit several times each week.
