I’m a Steeler fan for life, but I’ve really grown to hate this season’s team. The quarterback is running the team, the offensive line is a sieve, the defense is a hot mess all over the place, the kicker blows, and the receivers are too afraid of getting hit to catch the fucking ball. Should have lost to the Colts, should have lost to the Chiefs, and of course the four games every year against Cleveland and Cincinnati speak for themselves, but this is not a good team regardless of the record.

Sorry to hear that. Tony Blankley was a regular on Left, Right and Center and I heard him often. He was more civil there than in his columns, which could be fire-breathing screeds against encroaching socialism. He marketed himself as a “reasonable conservative” for the NPR/PBS set just as Davids Brooks and Frum do, was a solid party man and was a despicable hack most of the time, but he put more craft into it than many. Most importantly, every now and then he’d be honest or gracious. Blankley was much more paid shill than true believer. His interview of his colleague and political opponent Robert Scheer on his book The Great American Stickup was respectful and very well done. Regardless, stomach cancer reportedly can be a painful way to go, and I hope Blankley and his loved ones were spared the worst. Dying, and losing someone, are never easy.

I can buy that the ball wasn’t catchable, but otherwise it was obvious pass interference. The “he was looking at the ball” defense wouldn’t work. You can’t run right through the offensive player while grabbing him.

Nor do I, really, but my point is that you can’t go to the KOA site and listen to the game streamed there, because radio affiliates are, by contract, barred from streaming game broadcasts on their sites. Sure, you can listen on Sirius (or via NFL.com) if you pay the fee, but they don’t charge on a game-to-game basis.

Raven
@Violet: n a regular season NFL overtime game, the first team that scores wins, even if the other team does not get a possession; this is referred to as sudden death. However, in a post-season NFL game during the playoffs, if the first team with possession scores only a field goal, the other team is allowed the opportunity to match or better this score. This rule only affects playoff games in overtime in which the first team with possession scores a field goal: if the first team with possession scores a touchdown, the sudden death rules take effect. In a regular-season NFL game, if neither team scores in overtime, the game is a tie. In an NFL playoff game, additional overtime periods are played, as needed, to determine a winner. College overtime rules are more complicated.
Keith

Players have to keep track of an amazing number of details – like that catch, “Be sure to get your hands under the ball, so they can’t say it was a trap-catch and therefore incomplete.”

@Violet: According to the new rules, if a field goal is scored on the first possession of OT, the other team gets a crack at equaling or bettering that. If the other team scores a FG on their possession, then it goes to sudden death.
But I agree with MildlyAmusedRainbowPerson, it’ll be the Rapture.
vheidi
@Skip Schloss:
Likewise, except urban, underhill, too many planes. How do you watch sports on the internet (not that I need less productive weekends)? I listen on my droid or computer, but I guess I’m not interested enough to pay for live tv.

Thanks. Sounds kind of complicated.

If the Rapture occurs, I just want to note that I was at the time in question a believer. In something.

We’re in OT. I hope the commentators will explain which rules apply, the old or the new.
Ah: They just did. “We’re about to go into the first non-sudden death OT in NFL history…”
Violet
@ploeg:
Why did they change the overtime rules?
MildlyAmusedRainbowPerson
Hmm. I seem to still be on earth. Any of you miserable scum get carried up to heaven in a ball of fire? Can I get a Rapture status confirmation?
CaseyL
Tebow gets first crack.
LT
@CaseyL: Wow.
I always fucking hated sudden-death in football. In a sport like hockey, where possession changes all the time, it makes sense. In football – no.
Skipjack
I was rooting for the Steelers coming into the game until they started playing. Then I was rooting for the Broncos all the way for the laughs and a bit for the heart of the team. To my mind the Steelers don’t deserve to still be in this game, but I was willing to root for them for 5 seconds when I thought they might try to kick a 66 yard field goal. But now I’m starting to really look down on them.
Now it might as well be a coin flip.
And I still have time to edit: HOLY CRAP! Well done Tebow and whatever divine intervention that required.

Checked in about five minutes ago. Here’s hoping the Steelers pull it out.
CaseyL
@Violet: Because under the old rules whoever won the OT toss could run just enough plays to get into FG range and end the game right there. It was considered a cheap and cheatin’ thing to do. This way, unless the first possession results in a TD, each team gets a chance to score in OT.
DCLaw1

@Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again): I call it the Brett Favre Memorial Overtime Rule. Saints won the NFC Championship game in OT after Reggie Bush returned th kickoff to near midfield and Bree’s drove them about 20 more yards and Hartley nailed a field goal for the win. The sports media was very distressed that BrettFavre hadn’t gotten a chance to win it.

@LT: You also start a hockey period with a faceoff, where each team can get first possession, rather than a kickoff.
There is nothing, nothing like hockey OT in a big game. No other sport can match it for the intensity of knowing that the game can end any second, and you aren’t going to have any warning that this is the time someone is going to beat the goalie.
Maxwel

Same thing happened to the Jets. They blitzed and there was no one back when Tebow wound up, and wound up, and wound up some more before actually completing that pass.
Rich Eisen had the best line doing the highlights of the game, saying at the end of regulation: “You can’t beat Tim Tebow with a Hail Mary!”

The NFL overtime rules have always been absurd, ridiculous, and blatantly unfair to the team that loses the toss. Still are. Just adopt the college rule, ya idjits.

Good game. Pardon me, John, but I hate the Steelers. Glad to see ’em lose!
I wish that the NFL wasn’t so fond of sudden death overtime, but TV schedules aren’t terribly flexible I suppose.
LT
@Jamey:
You made that up. Please tell me you did.
Ron
That freaking hurt. I still think they shoulda tried for the 66-yarder at the end. I give Denver credit for the long pass play when the Steelers were clearly lining up to stop the run.
ploeg
@Gravenstone: ‘Cause the new rule doesn’t address the fairness issue: now you’ll have people bellyaching that the other team didn’t get the opportunity to match the touchdown.
Not to say that the old rule was any better on fairness, but at least it was much simpler.
burnspbesq

Same in lax. In the 2010 NCAA championship game, Duke won the opening faceoff in OT and scored five seconds later. Unreal. Go to YouTube and search on “C.J. Costabile” if you want to see it.

Complete brain-cramp by the Steelers’ safety (not Polamalu, the other one) who ran up to face-guard a non-existent slot receiver on the left side of the Broncos’ formation. In a world with a just and merciful Deity, he would have been sitting back in the middle and that would have been a 15 yard gain.
Elie
@ploeg:
ya know, life aint fair and neither is this. You get the coin toss and the choice then — maybe. If you are lucky, and good enough, you can score the touchdown. If not, you get to go to plan b. Its fair like life is fair. Not completely.

I was rooting for the Steelers on this one. Teabow will be fluffed. I wonder what the Lord’s position is on that?

@burnspbesq: Except they aren’t unfair to the team that loses the toss. All you have to do if you lose the toss is play defense. And if you do a reasonably good job of it, you get the ball in better position than you probably gave it to the team who won the toss in the first place. It tends to work out over time that the team who wins the toss wins the game about half the time, but rarely on the first possession. It’s just a coincidence that the last two times that teams went to overtime in the playoffs it ended on the first possession.

The scary thing is that the Patriots are not going to be able to spot this team 20 points next week.

@cynn: Well lookit. I was busy typing out a reply at the very same time that Raven was typing out a reply. Furthermore, Raven’s reply was correct and mine was not. Sure, I could have just gone back and edited my reply so that maybe I wouldn’t look so ignorant, but the fact is I was ignorant. Thus I added the ETA to indicated that my testimony was unreliable, so move along, nothing to see here, I’ve learned something, so go read Raven’s reply.
Now this reply is overwritten and superfluous, but I shall not be back to edit it. No, I shall not.
Also, we should acknowledge that especially on a Sunday football thread, there is likely to be a certain amount of alcohol-related mistyping.
