Beth S. has graciously volunteered to assemble this year’s Balloon Juice Pet Calendar:
I’m looking for the highest resolution images possible. The photos themselves won’t be that large, but the largest and highest resolution images people can send the better. I have photoshop and can do some remediation on images as necessary.
__
Depending on how many photos we get, it might be nice to feature a pet each month with a bit of its story – maybe as a pull out along the side…
Until Beth has a chance to set up a dedicated account, you can send your pics to me at [email protected] (or click on my name near the top of the right-hand column). Don’t be shy, you know we don’t measure love by the ‘professionalism’ of your pics, or the ‘show quality’ of your companion animals!
Any and all suggestions gratefully accepted… leave a comment below…

2013?
donnah
Last year’s calendar was great and our dog Wendy was to be found in September, I believe. It’s a wonderful way to celebrate those animals we love and make things better for the ones who have yet to be adopted.
*looks through photo file for pic of new adopted cat to send in*
WereBear
A two-fer is on its way, of Tristan and Reverend Jim, the Laurel & Hardy of rescue kitties.

Seriously, I’m slightly confused. Is this for a 2012 calendar (the year we’re about to enter in about five weeks) or is it a very-well-in-advance call for photos for the 2013 calendar?
Either way, I know it will be wonderful and Beth S. will do a fantastic job (thanks, Beth S.!) if it’s for 2012, how soon will the calendars be available to order? And are proceeds going to Charlie’s Angels?
So many questions. Sorry :-)
RossInDetroit
Do turtles qualify? I have a pic of a thoroughly muddy and pissed looking Eastern Box named Porky.
SiubhanDuinne
@RossInDetroit:
Not my call, but I for one would love to see a photo of muddy and pissed-looking Porky the Eastern Box Turtle.
RossInDetroit
@SiubhanDuinne:
Here you go. It’s low res because I took it on a cell phone. The special lighting in the temporary cage gives it a yellowish cast.
Looking at it, it’s not really good enough for the calendar.

What a wonderful tradition! A photo and story about my rescue sweetie are on their way.
JPL
@RossInDetroit: I think he’s adorable. I am going to submit a picture of my little mutt and she’s camera shy. My picture won’t win any prizes but how many opportunities does a dog have at being in a calendar.
SiubhanDuinne
@RossInDetroit:
LOL, thanks. Porky does look a bit peeved. He also seems to be something of an acrobat — that’s quite the angle he’s balancing at.
Restrung
Sent! really, it takes a year? Guess it would if I was doing it.
RossInDetroit
He’s cranky and obstinate but we’ve come to like him. Porky was a rescue. Some friends found him in an excavation on a building site and brought him to me. He hadn’t eaten in a long time & we didn’t think he was going to make it. That was in 1992 or ’93 and he’s doing fine.
He has a personality but Geezer the dog is much more photogenic. I’ll send a pic of him.
SiubhanDuinne
@Restrung:
So is there a BJ pets calendar for 2012? If so, I would really like to buy some as holiday gifts. The store over on the right shows only the current (i.e. 2011) calendar.

how about this picture?

we rescued Bucky from the local pound as a 6ish month old kitten around 7 years ago.
pretty cool kitty.
jeffreyw
@SiubhanDuinne: Here’s another. Didn’t catch is name.
SiubhanDuinne
@jeffreyw:
His flaming red eyes are awesome. I suggest “Fenton.”
imonlylurking
Sweet.
Is there a limit? Cuz at one point last year we had like 9 cats in the house and two or three that we were feeding but wouldn’t come inside. (We’re down to 5 and 1 respectively, this year.)

@ant:
The coolest!

i am so pleased to be working on the calendar this year. i’ve been a devoted balloon juice reader since the 2008 campaign and i’m delighted to give a little bit back to this community that keeps me sane, informed and shares my sappy love of animals, especially rescues. (i have two dogs who are both rescues, one of which is my consolation prize for not being able to rescue any more cats as my husband is terrible allergic.)
this is my first time commenting and i fully expect to mess it up. so here goes…
the calender is for 2012. i will do my very best to get it done by the holidays. it’s my understanding the calenders will benefit charlie’s angels. i do have a full time job as a graphic designer but will try not to let that interfere too much with this.
you can send your submissions to [email protected]. please send photos of all your fuzzy, scaly, feathered, finned companions. let me know their names and i’ll be sure to include it on their photos.
@RossInDetroit – i checked out porky’s photo and it’s big enough. if you don’t have a better one, i can run it through the photoshop machine to sharpen it and clean up the color a bit.
i will do my best to answer any technical questions and you can always send me an email at the yahoo account.
thanks so much for your generosity in sharing your pets for the calendar!

We have a house rabbit that was adopted from a local shelter. Joey has been a great pet for 6 years now! And I love taking photos of him, even though taking pictures of a bunny is really hard.

I like the last one the best. He has hay stuck in his whiskers, so cute!

@beth s.: Thank you, Beth!
As this is a pet thread, some might enjoy my latest post:
What? This is my business.
Where my love of cats collided with Occupy Wall Street’s aims of increasing the value of our lives.
Sorta.
phoebes-in-santa fe
I just submitted four pictures of two of my three rescue cats, “Alice Obama” – 5 years old and a full tabby – and “Robin Obama” – 2 years old and a black/white mix.
Even though they are different ages and adopted 2 years apart, they immediately fell in love with each other and sleep together, groom each other, and sit in the windows together, watching the outside world from the safely of the indoors.
They’re they “Obama Twins” and two sweeter, cuter cats can scarce exist in the world.
phoebes-in-santa fe
@Aaron Fown: Adorable rabbit! My tabby cat looks like a “Cat-bit”, if such things would exist!
phoebes-in-santa fe
Really cute turtle and cats and dogs so far.
Yutsano
@phoebes-in-santa fe: Cabbits?

@RossInDetroit: Well Ross, take a better photo! – would love to see an eastern box turtle in the next B\juice calendar

I don’t comment often, but I just sent in a picture of Tom, the flower-delivering cat who was featured in one of Anne Laurie’s early morning open threads about a year ago.
The availability of banana flower petals is kind of winding down for the season, and still a few months to go before camellia flowers hit the ground so gifts are a little scarce right now–but he still brings flowers when he can find them, especially after it rains. Sometimes he brings bits of foam insulation that wash out from under houses after a storm. “A” for effort!
Thanks Beth for doing this calendar and it’s such a great cause as well.
phoebes-in-santa fe
@Yutsano: Well, yes, the result of a cat and a rabbit mating. A “cat-bit”.
asiangrrlMN
@Aaron Fown: D’aaaaaaaw! Sooooo cuuuuuuuute!
@beth s.: Awe-sum! I will have to
stalkfollow my boys around to get a good pic. It’s hard to capture their magnitude as they are both black.@RossInDetroit: Cute as hell. Get a better pic. Has to be included!
Yutsy, hey, hon. How you be?
Oh, and it would be great if Tunchie was the centerfold….
Yutsano
@asiangrrlMN:
Black cat. Light background. Even you have something that should suffice.
Lexie is purring ball of kitteh fluff next to me. I have no idea how the vet didn’t say she was underweight. They just noted she was tiny.
