Tradition requires that we in the Northern Hemisphere note the turning of the year as it balances on the pivot between Summer’s abundance and Winter’s austerity. But mostly, I think we’re all glad to see the end of this particularly angry and brutal Silly Season…

Lemme’ just say thing one time: It doesn’t matter that Romney gives crisper answers in debates.
It doesn’t matter that Perry lies, dodges and otherwise dissembles.
Listen to me: It doesn’t matter.
— Perry IS a Christian, while Romney is a Mormon.
— Perry is from Texas, while Romney is from “Tax-a-Gay-o-chussets.”
— And Perry one of “them”, while Willard IS NOT.
Perry WILL be the nominee, even if it short-dicks the GOP elite, Fox News, and the Media-villagers. The rump of the GOP will see to it! See if I’m not right!

WAIT . . . you think it is going to get better?!? Crap, I wish I could share your optimism but next year is the election year & I’m afraid angry and brutal will look like the golden days of summer by this time 2012.

I for one, always hate to see the summer end. Here’s hoping more republican fuckbuggery will provide enough entertainment to keep me warm.

Hmm, lessee, onset of seasonal affective disorder, aggravated arthur-itis, dickheads who forget how to drive in the snow, even though it snows every Gaia-damned year, dead brown gardens, no more hammock time …
Sorry, I’d like it all back again. I know the folks down south would prefer to move ahead, but I’m still stung that August is over.

@Darnell From LA:
Please let it be so. I’m counting on it, that’s how I’m able to laugh at these evil clowns – they will be irrelevant soon enough.

@Darnell From LA:
I’m reminded of an old Charlie Brown cartoon (from back in the time when it was actually funny). Charlie is mad at being abused by the others and finally shouts, “You just wait, some day I’ll be the President! Then you’ll be sorry!”
Lucy looks back dead-pan, “You bet we will be sorry.”
I used to tell that joke about Boy Blunder & it got big laughs. Perry could make him look like an Apostle if he wins.

An excellent equinox to all.
My site came back from a hack attack and I’m better. Also fussier about security.

@harlana: To answer your question from the last thread: Gay republicans exist for a number of reasons, some of which are as follows: they don’t much care about gay rights AND/OR they aren’t terribly thrilled to be gay AND/OR they don’t much like women/minorities AND/OR they are very wealthy and like living as plutocrats AND/OR they are proponents of US militaristic imperialism AND/OR they are fundamental christians who buy into much of the social conservative schtick AND/OR they are climate change denialists AND/OR they are liberatarians AND/OR they are Andrew Sullivan AND/OR they were raised that way.
A lot of gay people, like most everyone else, have lots of unexamined priviledge, some of which makes it easier for them to support and vote for politicians who work against (some of) their interests. Also, speaking as a lefty member of the LGBTQI alphabet soup, gay people of all stripes are just as variable in their beliefs and practices as non-gay people – why shouldn’t some of us be f*ck-wits like the str8s?

Temps slipping into the mid sixties, and I could not be more pleased. The board is waxed and sharpened, and we have season passes to two local ski areas. Bring the snow.

I don’t understand the big deal about Florence Welch. I find her voice annoying.

Don’t worry, the angry and brutal silliness will continue…

@TheMightyTrowel:
I know a few gay Republicans. Being gay doesn’t make one immune to free market fantasies…

Autumn is my favorite season. Summer is my least fav. (except for the one day in August that is my birthday; please send presents).

Spring here. South of the equator.
Waiting to see if we get hit by the satellite.

I just read that an active duty military member got boo’ed at the debate last night. Anyone here with constitution strong enough to have sat through that shit fest that could elaborate?
Omnes Omnibus
@THE: I have always admired the persistence and tenacity shown by those you in the Southern hemisphere. It must be such a struggle and effort not to fall off the earth.

Here in the PNW, the end of summer means the end of brown lawns. Soon everything will be lush and green.

It’s supposed to be 107 today in Phoenix. Stuff your “Happy Autumn” in a sack…

@Southern Beale:
and she needs a stylist, bad.

As I age I’ve noticed the summers growing shorter and shorter. When I lived in NYC I welcomed the fall, now that I live in northern New England, I dread it. It’s not the cold that bothers me so much, but the darkness.
@schlemizel – was Alwhite: Yes, a gay active duty military member was booed in response to a question about DADT. None of the flag-lapel wearing candidates on the stage dared to rebuke the audience for booing.

It’s a strange thing Omni. But I tell you, we can always hold our maps the other way up.

Speaking of Australia,
I saw a sad video yesterday:
Sympathy for the devil. Warning disturbing images.

the most important thing about fall is football. baseball is boring, soccer is for kids who can’t play other sports or have overprotective whiny parents who know deep down their kids are inferior. hockey iis great but its not football.
football is great because every type of athleticism has its place within the game, its fully integrated and explosive.
i never rue the end of summer, because it always comes with the start of football. when you have sweat through 2 and 3 a day practices, the rain, the cold, the chill, is like a respite that only sharpens the senses.

I hope that isn’t the best Florence & the Machine song.

@Southern Beale: I guess we’re both old farts ;-)
I wasn’t particularily impressed by that song.

@THE:
A very happy first day of spring!

@schlemizel – was Alwhite:
Something about a soldier in uniform on location who came out and the audience boo’d him.

@Linda Featheringill:
In Australia we count the seasons from the first day of the month, but I’ve always thought the cardinal points, equinoxes and solstices, make better sense — climatically too.

Anne and everybody:
Happy autumnal equinox!
It’s nice to see that the universe is still rolling along and all the little bodies are still in place.
Autumn is frequently lovely in this part of the world but that will happen this year only if it quits raining! Darn!

@WereBear:
Mark Halperin attacked your site? Next time shoot on sight.

Half the year one hangs lower than the other. Half the year the other hangs lower than the one. Today? They’re equal. It’s the Scrotumnal Equinox.
My underwear fit very well this morning.

@Paul in KY:
From what I have heard, yes, that is the best this band can manage. Maybe I’m another old fart, but I think Florence and the Machine are the worst Grammy nominees since Debbie Boone.
As for autumnal equinox, love it. Fall is my favorite time of year. From the return of students to campus, to the start of football season (and the end of the worst sport evah, sorry baseball fans), to the fabulous foliage, to Thanksgiving, it’s simply glorious. The only thing I hate about fall is Halloween. And an extra special bonus for me this year, my birthday falls on my favorite holiday, Thanksgiving.
Paul in KY
@geg6: IMO, if you want to see a young lady who can rock & has her name as part of the band’s name, try ‘Grace Potter & the Nocturnals’.
Much better than ‘Florence & the Machine’.
geg6
@Paul in KY:
Will check them out. I’m truly am an old fart, but my musical tastes aren’t old, I don’t think.
Oh, and I totally agree with cleek about Florence being in dire need of a stylist. I thought maybe her Grammy outfit was just one bad choice. Apparently, with her, there are only bad choices. I’m available for a fee if she’s up for it. ;-)
Paul in KY
@geg6: I saw Grace & the band at Bonnaroo. Did a great set in 99 degree heat. She was dressed appropriately though :-)

Today is the 62nd birthday of that cool rocking Obot in the USA, Mr Bruce Frederick Joseph Springsteen. News from AP is that he will soon convene an E Street Band meeting to decide whether/how to carry on post Big Man.
Paul in KY
@Amir Khalid: He did go for several years without Mr. Clemons. Hope they decide to rock on. I’m sure the big man would want them to.

anne:
Thanks for the nice meditative piece.. I definitely appreciated.
I like all the seasons inc. winter — though it gets a bit old sometimes. I just think of our home planet as it flows around the sun, the beauty and power of the cosmos that humans cannot really affect at all — thankfully.
Happy weekend coming up to all.
I am preparing for my move East for “the new job” in the DC area. Not selling our digs here on WA coast but will miss it terribly. No water views and clamming where I am going but hubby and I will be together again. Will work to celebrate the Chesapeake…
geg6
@Elie:
Never been to WA, but the Chesapeake Bay area is pretty fucking awesome.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chesapeake_Bay
As for no clamming, seriously?
You haven’t lived until you’ve had a Maryland blue crab feast. But I’ve never had better seafood anywhere I’ve ever been. IMHO, the Chesapeake is the best seafood in all of America. YMMV.
Elie
@geg6:
No worries — I definitely dig the Chesapeake area. Worked there in Baltimore for 5 years. Met hubby there and got married there. DIG blue crabs and rock fish and will work on enviro issues to help the Bay.
That said, I will miss the coastline and sea that has become my home on the Left Coast. The rugged shoreline, mountains and the fat legged crustacean answer to the Blue Crab, the Dungeness… I have worked for years to help restore salmon runs in local creeks here… so many issues to preserve this beauty and richness.
I love both and will support both habitats with all my heart and soul until the day I die. For real
