Yeah, I get that. I loved playing, but when I was 12 and it was obvious that I was too small- thin, that is- to play the game, I switched to soccer. Yet I still love the sport more than any other. One of my great-grandfathers became a loyal Packer fan as soon as they started playing. My dad and one of his brothers were both captains of the storied Muskegon High Big Reds football team. It’s in my blood.
My kid’s little brother is in his second year of organized ball- just started fourth grade- and is a big kid, plays on the lines and loves it. I’m not saying that he loves punishing the other kids physically like some kids do, but loves making a good clean block or tackle. Gets off on it when his hand work is effective. Player: Gimme death, Chief.
Tribe (in background): aaawwwwwwwwwwww.
Chief: Ah, you choose death. Wise choice. But first … a little chee-chee.
Tribe (in background): Chee chee chee chee chee chee …
ETA: And if you haven’t heard them before, hunt down The Credibility Gap’s albums.

Mr Stagger Lee
@THE: There is an excellent documentary on Netflix, called 9/11 by two French Brothers that was originally a story of a day in a life of a NYFD rookie who worked at the station closest to the WTC. And it was filmed when the first jet hits the tower. A very Compelling documenatry
I was debating who to get next – all I have is a Favre jersey right now. Rodgers? Driver? Go old school, from the Starr era, or even Don Hutson? They’re selling some throwback gear this season.
Ya know, I was really happy in the playoffs last year when Seattle upset the Saints. I figured that if the Pack made the conference title game, it was going to be in the Superdome. I don’t think we’d have gotten to Brees. I think they would have run right by us on that turf. This grass is a big equalizer.

Cool, thanks. We’ve got a good crew rotating over there, and Blue Gal does a nice job making it all run smoothly. Alas, I can’t spend as much time online as I used to, including C&L music threads and everything else…
It was the Saints offense, which is going to cause a lot of headaches this year. But the Pack’s D, on three separate occasions, held the Saints in the red zone without allowing a TD: the Saints got a field goal, sacked on fourth down, and then the last, un-timed play from the Packers’ one.
Oh, and New Orleans’ return game, now featuring Darren Sproles, gave Brees a short field to work with.
The Pack’s D won’t yield that much yardage or that many points the rest of the season unless they get really banged up.
202.
Omnes Omnibus
@handy: Very good coverage for the most part and a fantastic performance by the D-line. The Saints have a damn good offense and one of the TD was punt return. The D was pretty solid. The O was scary good.
O/T, but I was just reading some 9/11 conspiracy theory crap, and all the comments to the effect of “THE BUILDINGS WERE BADLY BUILT” are making me pray for my own death.
Not a Truther, but that canard (if such it be) goes back to the original construction, back in the early 1970s. Blue-collar New Yorkers hated the whole idea of the WTC, and one of the rotating catalog of charges was that the blueprints were thrown together by ‘brother-in-law’ firms to get contracts locked down before legislation could be passed to save the existing neighborhood, and the buildings assembled by firms better known for their political connections than their construction skills. If this had become part of the “everybody knows” CW after 25 years, I can certainly see the post-9/11 conspiracy buffs battening onto it to reinforce their beliefs…

@Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again): It’s possible that I’m just compensating for a lifetime of Vikings fandom (until about 10 years ago, when I just quit watching football), and I’m using the Malcolm Gladwell article as an excuse. After 10 years of not watching, I can watch football dispassionately, and I just don’t find it that interesting. My game’s baseball, which is just as stupid and boring. To each his own.
Time for my annual reading of Tom Boswell’s 99 reasons baseball is better than football. (Granted, a couple dozen of those reasons no longer apply – thanks, Bud Selig! – but, still and all…)
Also too, college football >>>>>>>>>>>>> NFL football.
My game’s baseball, which is just as stupid and boring.
Okay, I get ya now. I don’t agree with how you came in and worded it originally, though. Randinho gets the trolls on his futbol threads, and Amato gets the type of holier-than-thou, “sports are dumb and a distraction” on any sports thread at C&L (the fucked up thing there being that the same trolls will happily comment on music/film/television threads), as if it’s impossible to watch a game and still read and think about more important issues. It sort of pisses me off, ya know? Of course you do.
Sorry that you were a Vikes fan. That can scar anyone.

@Linnaeus: Well there is Ohio University, but they are chopped liver in the scheme of things. To some of you exotic types Universal Sports is hyping up the Rugby World Cup. Go Springboks!
Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again)
That’s it…Run clock, let their offense cool off.
Mr Stagger Lee
@AA+ Bonds: I was hoping the threat was Daniel Snyder was going to sign David Gerrard or was it that Pete Carrol will stay with Tevarus Jackson through thick or thin.
Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again)
Nice run, Mr. Starks!
Batocchio
Greetings, Balloon Cheese Nation! (I’m not sold on “Cheese Juice Nation.”)
Touchdown, Starks! The Pack is looking good! And great to see Finley back.
Omnes Omnibus
@Batocchio: Balloon Cheese does sound better. Pack looks good, but I would like to see some interceptions. Just a thought.
THE
Australian ABC has a story about a Sydney woman who was a witness to the NY attack on 9/11/01 from a hotel across from the WTC.
Previously unseen photographs.

@Batocchio:
Oh no, Cheese Juice Nation is definitely the winner.

Curd it be any other way?

@uncle rameau: Pobably won’t quit. Has the same mentality as you,,, and me. I ended up with a lot of broken down body parts for my pictures.
Batocchio
Andy, you’ve been “Temporarily” Max McGee for quite some time now! Not that that’s bad…
Gravenstone
@Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again): Dude, at least he ain’t Billy Schroeder, local dickhead made sort good.
Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again)
@Batocchio:
I got too used to it. And it wasn’t necessarily meant to be a temporary thing as much as a tip of the hat to Firesign Theater.
BruceFromOhio
Crazy weather? Covered that already.
Power outages? Underway.
Migration scheduled? Hmm. Not yet… need a little more suffering first …
NFL Football season? Oh, yeah.
Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again)
@Gravenstone:
I’d never heard or read that Schroeder is a dick, but from the way he acted on the sidelines a few times, I kind of figured he was.
Any word on Jay DeMerit’s reputation? The US Men’s National Soccer team could have used him this week.

It’s time to play Beat the Reaper!

@THE: There is an excellent documentary on Netflix, called 9/11 by two French Brothers that was originally a story of a day in a life of a NYFD rookie who worked at the station closest to the WTC. And it was filmed when the first jet hits the tower. A very Compelling documenatry

That’s a timely sack from Erik Walden!

Oh, okay. Well, it certainly works for these threads, at least!

Yay, football! Overgrown steroid cases giving each other life shortening injuries for my entertainment!!! No thanks.
BruceFromOhio
Green Bay defense is gonna fun to watch all season long, if they keep playing like this.
Can’t wait to watch ’em put the hellylooyah on Dallas.
(looks forward to long shots of Jerry Jones sour puss as his team gets thrashed by the green & yellow)
… but first things first. C’MON SAINTS! THEY AIN’T PAYING YOU TO LIE AROUND!

@Gus:
Duly noted.
Also noted: You have the sort of superiority complex that gives lib-progs a bad reputation in the real world. Thanks a lot for that.
Randall Cobb, BABY!

COBB COBB COBB!

… and a run back for a td on the new shortened kickoff?
HELLYLOOYAH!
No need to watch the 4th … ‘nite, Saints!

Seeya, bitch! 108 yards. *sigh* Typoglycemia is a bitch.

Damn, my next knock-off jersey might have to be Cobb.

I think the Pack may have found their return man. [FN1]
[FN1] I have decided to use understatement. The kid is having a great night.

WTB special teams coverage. kkthxbai.
Batocchio
@Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again):
I was debating who to get next – all I have is a Favre jersey right now. Rodgers? Driver? Go old school, from the Starr era, or even Don Hutson? They’re selling some throwback gear this season.
Suffern ACE
@Batocchio:How about Johnny “Blood” McNally.
Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again)
@Batocchio:
You can never miss with Nitschke or Hornung. Arnie Herber or Cal Hubbard in the throwback might be pretty k3wl, too.
Omnes Omnibus
@Batocchio: I saw someone today wearing a Don Beebe.
Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again)
@Omnes Omnibus:
I was more happy for Beebe than for any of the other Packers when we beat the Pats in the SB.
Gravenstone
@Omnes Omnibus: I read that, and for some reason my brain filled it in with Majkowski, and I immediately thought WTF?
Batocchio
Yeah, I was thinking of Nitschke or Hornung.
Beebe had some great catches during the ’96-’97 season!
Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again)
@Batocchio:
Ted Hendricks would be sweet, too! Or Rich McGeorge. You’d have to customize those, though.
Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again)
I’m not liking this quarter. The defense needs a breather.
BruceFromOhio
… wishes for a cleek filter that worked on certain commentators …
Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again)
Or Willie Buchanon- #28- Ken Ellis- #48- John Brockington- #42- or MacArthur Lane- #36. My heroes when I started following in ’72.
Batocchio
Incomplete! Great D!

Hmmm… let’s see… umm… oh yeah! OFFENSIVE **FAIL**.

I would love to see Driver get the yardage record on a TD pass right here.

@Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again):
Alas, I lost track of her a long time ago, and I believe my contact info is all outdated. When was the last time you heard from her?
Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again)
@Batocchio:
More than a year ago. More like a year and a half. Love her, but was going through some problems of my own, and…
BruceFromOhio
@Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again): Brees is gonna be crying all right. That last one had to hurt.
Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again)
@BruceFromOhio:

@Linkmeister: Bear down? More like taking a shit all over the field, apparently. Whatever. I hate football. However, Wildcat basketball is always a beautiful thing.
O/T, but I was just reading some 9/11 conspiracy theory crap, and all the comments to the effect of “THE BUILDINGS WERE BADLY BUILT!!!” are making me pray for my own death.

@Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again): The contrast of Nate Silver’s take-down and the mini-quake of a Marshawn Lynch touchdown run to put it away will never be seen again.

I hear ya.
Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again)

One other OT thing: I don’t leave too many comments on the threads, but you’ve done a great job with MBRU at C&L when you’ve filled in.
Suffern ACE
Oh dear.
Batocchio
@Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again):
Cool, thanks. We’ve got a good crew rotating over there, and Blue Gal does a nice job making it all run smoothly. Alas, I can’t spend as much time online as I used to, including C&L music threads and everything else…
Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again)
BAD CALL!

Dammit, why do the Packers always need to keep it so interesting? WTB more D!
Still, great friggin’ opening to the season!
Omnes Omnibus
@Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again): Hawk touched the ball before he touched Sproles in my opinion. OTOH Pack wins!
BruceFromOhio
Well, shit. Good game, Packers D is going to have a good season if they keep this up.
Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again)
Whew!
Sorry for channeling my inner Cole in that last comment.
@Batocchio:
Fran’s great. What with the children and the marriage and whatnot, she still gets stuff done.
handy
@BruceFromOhio:
I didn’t catch the game. Were those 34 points given up due mostly to turnovers, special teams, etc. or was this just snark?
Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again)
@handy:
Omnes Omnibus
@handy: Very good coverage for the most part and a fantastic performance by the D-line. The Saints have a damn good offense and one of the TD was punt return. The D was pretty solid. The O was scary good.
Anne Laurie
@suzanne:
Gus
@Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again): It’s possible that I’m just compensating for a lifetime of Vikings fandom (until about 10 years ago, when I just quit watching football), and I’m using the Malcolm Gladwell article as an excuse. After 10 years of not watching, I can watch football dispassionately, and I just don’t find it that interesting. My game’s baseball, which is just as stupid and boring. To each his own.
PaulW
Are NFL teams still hiring?
Chet
Time for my annual reading of Tom Boswell’s 99 reasons baseball is better than football. (Granted, a couple dozen of those reasons no longer apply – thanks, Bud Selig! – but, still and all…)
Also too, college football >>>>>>>>>>>>> NFL football.
Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again)
@Gus:
