Trying to make it a fun Thursday evening with an early Song of the Week.
——————-
Barbara Lewis, “Baby, I’m Yours” (1965)
Written by Van McCoy. Barbara Lewis was a singer who first caught on around Ann Arbor, Michigan, in the early ’60s. Her first and biggest hit she wrote herself, “Hello Stranger,” but I couldn’t find a YouTube version any better than the one below. (Here’s a Grooveshark version from Bob Dylan’s XM show with somewhat better sound.) I think this might be my favorite anyway, because I actually remember hearing it on the radio. It’s really a sweet one. She had two more hits, “Make Me Your Baby” and “Make Me Belong to You.” There might be a kind of story in them if you get the right order.
Big hit: “Hello Stranger”

Who’s crazier? The vast mass of Republican crazies competing for the presidential nomination by reflecting the crazy of the Teahadi crazies? Or Jon Huntsman, for thinking he can pull the GOP from the brink of the crazy by appealing to, of all things, sanity:
ETA: Love Barbara Lewis’s performance in the embedded song, DougJ.

I loved this song. I remember hearing it on radio, too.
“I’ll be yours until 2 and 2 is 3”. Well, it was a long relationship, which must have met its end in about, what? 2000?
MikeJ
@JGabriel: Huntsman crazier than that quote sounds. He believes in the scientific evidence of global warming, but he still doesn’t think we should do anything about it.
Bruce S
Also, Bert Berns produced this one. (Them’s producer – also wrote “Here Comes The Night”)
Big Baby DougJ
@CT Voter:
I like the song a lot too. It always reminds me of this song for some reason.
Southern Beale
I heard that Crystals song “He Hit Me (And It Felt Like A Kiss)” on the radio this morning. Appalling. I’d never heard it before. It was one of those early Carole King/Gerry Goffin songs, produced by Phil Spector. I detected no irony or satire in the production … I’d love someone to ask Carole King about that song. I read that biography “Girls Like Us” and I don’t recall it coming up.
Big Baby DougJ
@Southern Beale:
I love Carole King anyway.

@JGabriel
If a Republican is elected over Obama, one of his first acts, after taking office, will be declaring Jon Huntsman an enemy combatant and shipping his sorry ass to Gitmo.

Southern Beale
@Big Baby DougJ:
I know. But that song … ouch. Goffin wrote the lyrics, and if you read “Girls Like Us” you’d know he was a bit of a nutball.
Big Baby DougJ
@Southern Beale:
It’s awful, but Far Away, Too Late, she wrote a lot of great songs.
JGabriel
MikeJ:
Even so, I still don’t know whether to praise Huntsman for facing the slings and arrows of outrageous batshittery, or to laugh ironically at his Quixotic attempt to take arms against a sea of fundies, and by opposing, end their influence.

So the goddamned hard-wired smoke detector the damn gummint made us install in our garage is beeping for no discernible reason. I tried spraying dust-off all around it to see if some dust got into it but no luck. It’s driving me nuts because my office is right above our garage.
Fucking gummint.
gogol's wife
Thank you, I love that song and hadn’t thought of it for a long time. Beautiful song, beautifully performed.
JGabriel
@Southern Beale:
Just ignore the flames.

Doug,
You or some other front pager should do another “what’s on your ipod” thread. The one that ABL did awhile back was a blast and included some kick-ass set lists.
lamh34
So I mentioned on the other thread, that I was kinda looking forward to seeing Meryl Streep’s take on Margaret Thatcher. Here is a teaser trailer, with a small bit of Streep’s “Iron Lady”
The Iron Lady Teaser Trailer
Hmmm, what do ya’ll think?
I made a comment to some people a while ago, that Meryl Streep could play Michelle Obama in a movie version of the Obama campaign, and totally rock it.
Damn, is there an accent that Streep can’t do? Between her and Cate Blanchett, my head is spinning over the number of different accents they’ve both done in movies.
BD of MN
@Southern Beale: my house is old, so I’m not entirely sure about this, but don’t even the hard wired detectors also have a battery in them, also, too?
JGabriel
@lamh34:
I’m waiting to see whether they’ve come to praise Thatcher, or stab every aspect of her reputation with a million truth-exposing daggers.
I’m hoping for the latter, but expecting the former. Though Streep is certainly no wingnut.
.
hilts
@lamh34:
Nope, Streep is the only American actor or actress I know of who can pull off any accent under the sun. She and Blanchett are simply amazing actresses.
CT Voter
@Big Baby DougJ: This is burned in my brain: Yes, I know, but that was an awesome time to be growing up and listening to AM and the then “really cool FM” radio.
And I loved Carole King.
CT Voter
@hilts: Yes, well, maybe. Brits think her British accent sucks.

@Big Baby DougJ:
Oh well shit. “Tapestry” was the sondtrack of the women’s movement.
burnspbesq
Sigh. Just saw a billboard for a remake of “Straw Dogs.”
Why is this a good idea?
MikeJ
@lamh34: Unrelated to the movie,but tying in to the music theme of the thread, I’ve been listening to Mogwai’s latest album, Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will, particularly the track George Square Thatcher Death Party .
General Stuck
First 45 lp I ever owned. I think of it as early free love hippy, as my hormones raged at the time.

Southern Beale
@BD of MN:
Some of our hard-wired detectors have batteries in them for back-up but this isn’t one. The ones in our garage and my studio don’t. The studio one started beeping last spring and the dust-off worked, but it’s not working on the garage one.
LE SIGH
Needless to say, there is no smoke, no fire, no reason for it to be beeping except to FUCK WITH MY HEAD.
Litlebritdifrnt
I have to say that I loved Thatcher at the time, me and John Cole then went all liberal on peoples asses.
Southern Beale
Can I also say, if I see another picture of a stock broker with a “HOLY FUCK WE’RE SCREWED” look on his face on the internet I’m gonna punch something.
CT Voter
And my last entry for song of the week. Another song burned into my brain thanks to some of my older siblings.
Barbara Lewis, Marvin Gaye, Carole King, Ry Cooder? I was lucky. My Mom and siblings could have loved Barry Manilow.
Valdivia
@lamh34:
I just saw Cate Blanchet do Uncle Vanya here in DC in an all Australian accent Aussie production. Man is that woman amazing! I feel so lucky to have seen her on the stage. She rocks it.
Valdivia
@Litlebritdifrnt:
so did I, but I was 12 so I call it my youthful indiscretion. ;)
Southern Beale
Well, everyone waxing nostalgic about Thatcher might be interested in this Guardian piece about Murdoch, specifically this bit buried at the end of the article:
Raven (formerly stuckinred)
@Litlebritdifrnt: What do you know about Northern Soul?
MikeJ
Hey Beale, are we doing a Seattle juicers meetup?
Raven (formerly stuckinred)
@jeffreyw: How bout Duane with Lulu?
Raven (formerly stuckinred)
@Valdivia: two t’s
and she was great as Dylan!
lamh34
@Valdivia:
I love Cate Blanchett. She slowly became one of my fav actresses, I’m not much for “period pieces” or biopics or the like, but Cate has done enough “mainstream” things, that I found myself watching the other more “independent” movies she’s done just because.
Valdivia
@Raven (formerly stuckinred):
oops! I am always messing up the spelling. hhis.
she is teh awesome.
MikeJ
@Raven (formerly stuckinred): If you’re interested in old men rockin’, I’d point you to the album Status Quo released this spring. Really, really good, especially since so many bands have a 29th album slump.
Valdivia
@lamh34:
yes. she really can transform herself into anything. I saw her last year here too doing A Streetcar Named Desire and the contrast between her in that and her in Uncle Vanya is striking. She is actually super funny and onto physical comedy which she did in this play. But can also carry herself like a countess. I am going to keep raving!
Southern Beale
@MikeJ:
I’d love to! We’ll be there this Sat and Sunday … supposed to meet up with my nephew at some point, don’t know when or where though. We’re staying downtown by the big farmer’s market, anyone want to meet up for some beers we’d love to… let me know time and place.
lamh34
So I wan to see “The Iron Lady” for Meryl Streep alone. If Meryl wasn’t in it, I would care less. There are any number of movies I want to see, but there is one movie I MOST WANT TO SEE this fall movie season is a childhood favorite of me and mine, and hopefully a new generation will come to love them too!!!
Is it weird that just the trailer gives me fits of giggle and happiness and not much is really happening in it. Plus Jason Segel has replaced my “doughy boy” crush on Vince Vaughn (although I do still love Vinny).
The Muppets
jeffreyw
@Raven (formerly stuckinred): you dirty ol man you!
Talk about an unlikely pairing, Lulu and Duane? Jeebus
JGabriel
@CT Voter:
There’s over a hundred British accents, and they all think any accent that isn’t their own sucks.
.
Raven (formerly stuckinred)
@jeffreyw: Check the Lulu Atco Session, she can belt it out.
MikeJ
@Southern Beale: I know Yutsy said he was interested, we just need to find any others and settle on a time and place.
Maybe a thread on your blog that we can point people here to?
Southern Beale
@MikeJ:
Great idea will throw one up …
Raven (formerly stuckinred)
@MikeJ: Never hoid a da bums,
gbear
@Raven (formerly stuckinred): That is just so wrong…
Southern Beale
Any Seattle-area Juicers interested in a meet-up this weekend? I’ve thrown up a thread at my place to discuss possible times/venues … Mr. Beale and I will be in town this weekend and would love to meet some of you in the flesh …
Raven (formerly stuckinred)
@gbear: I report, you decide.

Here’s my fave song of the day. I’ve been listening to Nick Lowe in my car today.
Even little doggie’s gotta eat…
Svensker
@CT Voter:
Best version of the best song ever. Still gives me goose bumps. And ya just have to dance.
Svensker
@CT Voter:
She drives me crazy. Always makes me feel like she’s saying “here I am doing an accent, aren’t I fantastic”.
CT Voter
@Svensker: She does accents. Well. Unless you happen to be immersed in the accent that she’s doing, and then, not so great, but better than anyone around.
CT Voter
@JGabriel: And there are over a hundred American accents. She’s terrific, no doubt. And if you aren’t immersed in the accent that she is trying to do, it sounds terrific.
I’m not knocking her.

It was Bukowski’s birthday this week so I’m offering up this:

@Valdivia:
How in the heck did they manage to set “Uncle Vanya” in the Soviet era? I stopped reading the review when I got to that part. I just don’t see how that could be any good at all.
I’m afraid I’m going to bed now, but I’ll see your answer in the morning, if you have a chance to answer.

@Southern Beale: How old is the detector? I had a wired-in one that had been in the house since I bought it. It started beeping once and I tried the same things you did. Finally called the fire department because I thought there must be something I was missing. They told me that the detectors do that when the americium pellet finally decays to the point where the sensor triggers. You have to replace the detector then.
hamletta
@Origuy: Yup. That’s what I was gonna say, too.
They only last about 10-ish years.
