You thought Perry’s crazy treason talk was bad news for Perry, it’s actually bad news for the fed!
When Perry advocates we teach young earth creationism in schools, it will be bad news for scientists.

It’s a good thing that threats aren’t a type of pressure, or the Post would be full of shit.
Amanda in the South Bay
So, is Neal Irwin a fucking piece of shit douchebag? It’d be irresponsible not to speculate.

IT’S ALWAYS GOOD NEWS FOR REPUBLICANS!!
Geez how many times do I have to remind you folks?

@Raven (formerly stuckinred): If he was in New Hampshire, why wasn’t he proposing to secure the Canadian border with drones?

Big Baby DougJ will be on the list soon, when Perry starts raving about the budget.
“Perry two plus two equals zero attack puts pressure on mathematicians!”

@Raven (formerly stuckinred): I’m telling you, AGM-65 Maverick air to surface missiles mounted on all Southwest Airlines Dallas to San Diego flights. Why is Obama refusing this sensible free-market solution?

They need this circus. Now that Perry is in they can write Bachmann off. Of course, they’ve always known that she’s crazy, but what were they supposed to do, Romney was playing the ‘above the fray/inevitability’ card.
So now they’re stuck with Perry. They probably suspect that they’ve taken a huge risk, which is why we’ll get more of this Christie/Ryan talk. But until then Perry can pretty much say whatever he wants.

@Martin:
You think well but you’re thinking too small. We have several thousand perfectly serviceable aircraft gathering dust at Davis Monthan AFB. Lease ’em to Xe and pay them to carry out round the clock saturation bombing of the border.
japa21
This is getting past the point of ridiculous. These folks are becoming parodies of the parodies of them.
kdaug
@Martin:
Perry ain’t advocating that – Hughes Aircraft hasn’t contributed to his campaign.
Now Lockheed’s AGM-114 Hellfires, on the other hand – those could work.
Brings jobs to the state, and all.

This is going to be the Bush years all over again. The Media will act like there is nothing crazy about anything these fuckers say or do until the death toll of our war in Iran gets too high to ignore and another city is under water. Even then they still won’t investigate shit and we’ll hear how both sides do it.
Corey
If you actually read the article, it’s not “both sides do it” bullshit, he’s making the (entirely reasonable) point that the Fed is institutionally loath to get involved in politics, and now that Perry has cast monetary stimulus as a political move, they’re less likely to do it.
lacp
We forget that once there were giants in the Republican Party. Like, say, Dan Quayle…..

Simple solution, then. Let Democrats cast not doing monetary stimulus as a political move, so they’ll cancel each other out.
Something tells me, though, that it won’t work this way…
Carnacki
FAA, DoD, Homeland Security have worked for some time on setting up protocols for use of unmanned aerial vehicles in the U.S. for border security. But since Perry called on using “Predator” drones on the borders, he’ll of course be the one who pushed them to do what they’d already been working on.
4tehlulz
Most people just scan the headlines, so the takeaway is that Perry just made a criticism of the Fed, not committed a hit on the Fed and the economy.
JC
Perry is interesting. I think he is smarter than people are saying here.
Even the ‘fed’ comment, is a canny thing to say, right NOW, in regards to the Paul-ites and Teatards looking favorably on Perry.
He IS running in a whackadoodle primary, remember.
But – after he has WON said whackadoodle primary?
You really think he won’t suddenly morph to ‘a uniter and not a divider’, at least for the general election?
We already know that he is, first and foremost, a Business Conservative. He’s that first, despite his sympathies with Social Conservatives.
I just don’t think he’ll implode like Palin did. The guy will persevere, will be canny, and will pivot, once he has won the primary.
Now – if he is elected, once IN – his record shows that he will put a hurting on Democrats, and will go Scott Walker on any opposition. He has already done this in Texas, shown no interest in bipartisanship, but only enacting policies that increase power. His power. His parties power.
In THAT sense, he is Bush on steroids. We can expect legislation – a lot, most likely – that will be offered with the intention of forcing the Democrats to implode. Like what Rove and Bush did, but only more so.

@frapalinger:
you should come to New York, parts of this city are, or were, underwater. Our Democratic candidate for Congress had a plan to fix it, invest in infrastructure in the community, drainage, new roads, etc, NOBODY IN THE MEDIA IS EVEN MENTIONING A SINGLE WORD OF IT.
Instead, all the media here wants to talk about is stupid mosque bullshit
Occasional Reader (okay, I'm here all the time)
I started to RTFA and thought, ‘meh, story’s fine, DougJ’s fall for a bad headline.’ Especially when I got to here:
But then I read this:
Now to be fair, the Fed doesn’t operate in a political vacuum. But it would have been nice for the reporter to call around and see if anyone who is willing to put their name behind a quote thinks this is really an issue.
Oh, and then there’s this:
Wait, so the question…the question now…is whether the Republicans shouting “austerity now!” get President Perry to appoint hawks to the Fed board?

I did read the article, I agree it wasn’t just the headline that was bad.

@JC:
His “Fed” comment suggested that Bernanke would be lynched in Texas for being a traitor. That’s not a policy disagreement with the Fed. Say what you will about the Paultards, they’ve never implied anything close to that, so right out of the gate Perry’s made a huge miscalculation. Bush would never have said anything that dumb, and I can’t believe I’m saying that.

“Fed’s Monetary Policies Constrained By Risk They’ll Get The Shit Kicked Out Of Them In Texas.”
Who’ll print this newsworthy headline first? The Onion? Or the Washington Post, written by Neil “Another Brilliant Point, Governor Perry, Sir!” Irwin?
Threadkiller
Meh, the Rethugs always advocate against expansionary monetary policy when they’re out of power – the better to retard the economy so they can regain power.
The fact that the meme was activated by a lynching threat this time – I got nothing. Awesome to see eliminationist rhetoric get (further) mainstreamed.
I’m gonna need a lot of booze/valium/glue to get through this cycle.

@4tehlulz:
Today’s headlines about Perry are that he thinks Bernanke has committed treason and that he wants to bomb Mexicans from the sky.
The Snarxist Formerly Known as Kryptik
@a1:
The headline will cross the Onion’s copy desk the very day that the WaPo says it in more genteel language. Like “Threats of Serious Backlash in With Perry Voters Limit Fed Policies”
Steve M.
I’m rarely optimistic, but I think this may be a rare case of the WaPo going too far to the right of the zeitgeist without a serious plan for dragging the rest of us along. Paul Ryan cheerleading was the previous example. I’m not saying that Perry’s Fed-bashing will be unpopular (I’m sure it cheers the rank-and-file wingers), but I think most non-wingers don’t give much thought to anything fiscal beyond taxes and spending, and those only in a rudimentary way. And I really think Perry may be on the verge of becoming an SNL caricature of himself, a la Palin, before he can ever define himself in the way he’d like.

are we up to the 10-post limit on rick perry for the day yet?
les
Well, 2nd day in, Perry does it again; claims the horrible feds are gong to require farmers to get commercial drivers licenses to operate their equipment, when the real story was Fed. Dept. of Transportation prevented Illinois from making the requirement. TPM put it well–Perry pulled a Bachmann.
Keep it up, gov.
JC
@efgoldman:
I disagree. I think the Paulies and the Tealies, secretly like, JUST this type of talk.
Ash Can
(I’m repeating this here after posting it in the wrong thread):
Actually, I think this story is a lot more entertaining: “Rick Perry Condemns Federal Farm Regulation — That Doesn’t Exist”
Now that’s comedy.

@efgoldman: What in the book, is of most use, in portraying Perry negatively, to the masses of the US?

I seem to remember that Neil Irwin worked for The Moonies at The Washington Times before joining the WaPo. Seems old habits dies hard.
Turgidson
The “good” news so far in the Perry era is that the guy seems to believe his own hype. Bush mostly waited until he was in office and had 9-11 to exploit before he decided he could just make shit up and do whatever he wanted with complete disregard for facts or anything else. Perry clearly thinks he’ll get away with it from day 1 of his campaign, and that the force of his charisma, or something, will be all he needs. He may be right, but it’s risky to start so soon.
Amir Khalid
So much excitement, and all over the Republican Party’s latest Candidate of The Month. It wasn’t that long ago that people were getting worked up just like this over Donald Trump.

And – whoosh! – Perry zooms to the top of the polls.

Perry is a joke no doubt but it is a joke economic conservatives hope to pull on us. The Texas Miracle is what Krugman correctly calls the Texas Unmiracle.
When you factor in population there is no meat on the bone but that hasn’t stopped the Investor’s Business Daily from slobbering all over him when he announced his candidacy in Monday’s edition.
They couldn’t even wait till the editoral page to start editoralizing how Perry is the “anti-Obama” but started on the front page.

I’ll skip the obvious commentary about trying to turn the negative of you’re father-in-law is so opposed to you fathering any more children on his daughter that he vasectomizes you himself to a positive about family trust, to a more pressing question.
We all know how Republicans often like to brag about the size of their candidates’ balls, which raises an interesting issue: Does the size of Rick Perry’s balls matter if he’s shooting blanks?
.

My carpool partner was all in a twist because Ron Paul came in a close second to Michele! in the straw poll, but the MSM is all about Perry and Romney.
Tugg Romney
Alot of folks would love to have a beer with Rick. I bet he looks awesome in a flight suit too. If this is the last, best hope for the GOP then Obama can sleep easily. We’ll get another guy like that in, depressingly soon too. But not in 2012.
