CNN presenter Kyra Phillips practices actual journalism and reduces NOM spokesman David Tyree to (even more) incoherent babbling by using such unfair journalistic tactics as research, follow-up questions and requests for him to provide evidence for his statements.
More of this please.
ETA:
Evangelicals, Jews and Catholics in the state are urgently mobilizing their communities to bring a stop to the legalization of gay marriage. Senators’ offices are being inundated with calls with the Senate expected to vote on the Marriage Equality Act Friday.
If you live in New York, have you called your senator yet?
beltane
Do people have such empty, meaningless lives that they have to concern themselves with other people’s marriages to this extent? I know a lot of other straight people whose marriages I find offensive for a variety of reasons. Should I mobilize myself to call my state rep to invalidate these offensive marriages?
Mike Kay (True Grit)
Monday is the key. On Tuesday, the state senate goes into summer recess until September. So it the republican senate blocks the vote on Monday, the issue goes on ice for 3 months.

Tyree is an ex-junkie and ex-NFLer. I have trouble taking a recovering addict who was never anything more than a third-stringer at the highest level of his profession seriously. Yes, Progressive New Yorkers should call their elected officials on this, but they shouldn’t sweat the likes of David Tyree.
Joel
Y’all should have been rooting for the Patriots.

Bias! Bias! Bias!
Villago Delenda Est
Just what Beltane said at #1. Why the hell should you care about even the sex lives of others, let alone their legal status in a marriage?
joeyess
What. An. Idiot.
Apparently, Tyree only uses his head to catch footballs.

And it was Kyra Phillips of all people!! Not exactly someone known for practicing good journalism.
BIGTHEORY
NY SENATOR GREG BALL ON TWITTER RIGHT NOW!!
https://twitter.com/#!/ball4ny/status/81912792394899456 “Opening up the discussion! So, if you were me, how would you vote on gay marriage? Yes or No?”
A few days ago, Greg Ball, has said he’ll vote “no” unless he gets very specific language in the bill that carves out exceptions for religious groups.
Yesterday he was asking people how to vote on Facebook… why is he asking again on twitter? Is he hoping to get a different response?

@Mike Kay (True Grit): Come on, you didn’t come in talking about Weiner’s weiner? What the fuck’s wrong with you, man? Staying on topic and everything. Shit.
urizon
Tyree is a total douche-nozzle, no doubt; but let’s see the usually-execrable Phillips go after someone who has some actual political power.
Mike Kay (True Grit)
@jwb: Here’s a great story by liberal blogger Steve Karnacki on weiner’s downfall.

Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.

hell yeah.
and not just marriages.

NFL star? The dude made one important catch in his entire career! And got cut afterwards!

Hey, if you can’t get lectured on morality by a former crack addict and alcoholic who was once arrested with half a pound of weed in his car, who can you get lectured on morality by?
Hill Dweller
I’m thrilled Phillips made Tyree look stupid, but she did it because he has no real power. She knows he can’t hurt her career.
Conversely, if a Republican said the exact same thing, Phillips wouldn’t even pretend to challenge him/her.
Corner Stone
@C.J.
How many have you made?
Corner Stone
@Brian R.
Half a pound? Why give him the bidness for holding a good Thursday’s worth?
Corner Stone
Sarah,
When are you going to be less proud and less tall?

When are you going to be less proud and less tall?
Nice flailing!

@Corner Stone
Is that the new standard now that allows a person to say bat-shit insane nonsense? Catch a football = moral certitude and divine wisdom?
Tyree is a douche. An idiot that should keep his fucking mouth shut and reserve his bigotry for his backyard bbq’s. I don’t care what his opinion is…… he’s fucking wrong. Catching a football is the only thing he’s accomplished in his life. His new venture is quite a bit less entertaining and it’s injurious to people that he knows nothing about.
Fuck him in his ear….. Fuck him in his other ear….
Lysana
This.
Also agree with those who note she’s safe going after Tyree. It’s still good to see.

@Villago Delenda Est:
Simple. Because the Bible says that God will punish the whole nation if it fails to follow His laws. This is not a minor little thing you find in some obscure passage. It’s repeated again and again in the Torah and is the major thrust of the later prophets. If you take the Bible literally and are dumb enough to confuse the USA with Israel, you have to believe that it’s essential to prevent other people from sinning in order to protect the country as a whole. As far as I’m concerned, it’s one more reason to ignore the Bible, but there are plenty of people who think it’s a great reason to persecute anyone who doesn’t follow their interpretation of the Bible.
Shawn in ShowMe
I’d love to believe this was something more than a white woman putting a black man in his place but until I see Kurt Warner get the same treatment by the MSM, I’m skeptical.

When you’re less stoned, dear.

My Greek mom lives in NY. This is gonna be another one of those arguments where I will be forced to remind her that it was Socrates et al who STARTED this whole gay thing….

Dear Mrs. Sarah — ever since you were kind enough to mention your receptivity to a pair of attractive and properly presented boobs, I have been plotting how I can lure you away from the short-lived appeal of Cornered Stone and his, um, endowments.
Alison
I like that she brought up infertile couples, and then he’s all “HOW DOES THAT HAVE ANY BEARING” and blah blah. If your argument is that same sex couples are “unnatural” because they can’t procreate, then yeah, by that rationale you should also be against opposite sex couples who either can’t or don’t wish to do so. Also, that would mean elderly people can’t get married either, but if Tyree is like his fellow Republiturds, he probably just wants them all to kick off around 65 anyway.
And as is often mentioned, if kids are just going to diiiiiieeee or turn into demon spawn without a mom and a dad raising them, I guess these wingnut fucks will get right on with drafting legislation to ban divorce, right? And possibly also laws that say if your spouse dies, you have to remarry within X amount of time or your kids will be taken from you? I mean, THINK OF THE CHILDRENS and whatever.
Sarah Proud and Tall
@ eemom
Heavens, my dear. I don’t want to play with that grumpy old thing, or his questionable endowments.
However, I suspect you and I would get along like a house on fire. There might be screaming and people jumping out windows, but it would be entertaining to watch.
Nic
Thanks for sharing, that was excellent!

@Sarah Proud and Tall,#29: I would imagine lots of screaming and some defenestration resulting from a choice of jump or be thrown, but I’ve been known to be overly optimistic.

Personally, I’m always frustrated that these discussions of “traditional” marriage leave out the the most long standing traditionally historic reasons for marriage: polygamy, political alliance, and exchange of property…
bkny
kyra phillips should always be remembered for this interview with the dr of a 12yo boy who lost 15 relatives, including his parents, and both arms when uncle scam’s freedom bombs hit his house:
‘Doctor, does he understand why this war took place? Has he talked about Operation Iraqi Freedom and the meaning. Does he understand it?'”
JohnR
Oh, whoopee. A TV face goes after a fish in a barrel. She happens to be doing what I think is the right thing here, but so what? As has been noted already, this sort of “attack” hardly ever happens to any of the Important People. Unless, of course, they belong to the Wrong Side. Why gloat over this? You can be darned sure that next time around this same person or one of her clones will be all “we report, you decide” on some other artificial “controversy” like jobs, public health, the role of government, the color of the sky or something equally controversial. These faces save their righteous indignation for lightweights like Tyree here, or for sex stuff they can get wet about.
Ronbo
At one point in time, owing slaves was also normal and natural. Even the Bible has set rules on proper slave ownership.
God is more than a concept that fits into that black book many use to smite their perceived enemies.

when I see this I instantly hear it set to the tune of Don Henley’s Dirty Laundry — “kick ’em when they up, kick ’em when they down” — which causes me to giggle uncontrollably.
batgirl
I don’t get this. I’m Jewish. If I went to a Catholic priest and asked him to marry me, he could say no. Is there some specific exception in “heterosexual law” that allows him to do this? Jeez, I know Catholics who have been refused by Catholic priests for their own weddings. What about passing a law for gay marriage changes the ability of clergy to decide whom they will marry? Am I missing something?
Jay in Oregon
@batgirl #37:
No, you’ve pretty much got it right.
The right have been using that as a boogeyman: “If same-sex marriage is legalized, your church could become the site of a homosexxxual orgy as they force a sobbing priest to certify their unnatural union!”
It’s the spiritual kin of “Black men will rape your wives and daughters! You wouldn’t want to live next to one, would you?”
Brachiator
@beltane:
Sadly, yep.
Also a lot of people believe faux history, like the Roman Empire being brought down because of immorality, or they believe religious mythology about a deity who destroys an immoral city or nation.
Pongo
This ‘one woman, one man’ ordained by God cannard is so easily refuted–why doesn’t anyone go after it? If that is their position, than how do these folks explain the ‘God-ordained’ polygamy of the Old Testament? This was actually a documented form of God-approved marriage that ‘existed before our country’ and that we(certain elements of the Mormon faith excluded) chose to ‘mess’ with. Why did we not dissolve into anarchy from this breach of God’s plan?
If the justification is that Christians follow the New Testament, not the Old, then most are in serious breach of their contractual obligations since most of the ‘rules’ the right tries to impose can not be found in the New Testament–only the Old and they don’t get to have it both ways.
MAJeff
They want more than that. They want service agencies like Catholic Charities that are acting as proxies for the state in service provision to be able to refuse to treat all citizens equally. They want state money and the subsidization of their bigotry.
SectarianSofa
The guy’s obviously an idiot, or he wouldn’t have become a spokesman for NOM.
“God, blah blah blah, definition can’t, uh, change, blah, blah traditional stuff, God, blah, blah…”
As someone up-thread mention, slavery and stuff. And God didn’t write any fucking rules, you fucking people just make this shit up.
SectarianSofa
Can we not just fast-forward to employing telegenic Japanese robot interviewers whose only real journalistic competency (with which they will surpass all but perhaps 5% of televised journalists), is the ability to repeat, over and over, without tiring, “What’s the evidence for that claim?”
