Think Boehner’s party wouldn’t love to wall-off high-density, lower-income parts of the country, trapping those inside? It’s already the metaphorical aim of their social policies …
Joe Beese
So you’re jake with the GOS now, Mr. Cole?

Apparently Arizona Liberals are thinking about attempting to detach from the rest of their crazy state. I think Chicago should consider this option as well. No more tax revenues for you Springfield!

@Joe Beese: I don’t even know what this means. Can anyone fill me in?

OMG, I hope Tunch doesn’t see that.

DougJ trolled the place last night on why everybody hates on DKos and got 300+ replies. I guess he assumed you were not on board either.

@Morbo:
I feel really badly, because I’m giggling at the picture of the cute cat and all – but it turns out that this nutjob sliced himself and the cat with a knife, presumably meaning that he (or, I suppose, the cat) was either insane or out of his gourd on mind-altering substances, and the cat was later euthanized. Which does take some of the fun out of it.

I’m guessing he has butt hurt over Doug’s thread last night about whether or not we all hate GOS. Since I didn’t notice you weighing in on that issue in the thread, I can only assume he doesn’t know the difference between you and the approximately 30-40% of commenters in that thread that admitted to hating GOS. He couldn’t be mistaking you for Doug as Doug explicitly said in his original post that he values GOS.
Zifnab
Texas would like to extend its eternal gratitude to Arizona, for keeping that crazy bar raised higher than we’ve yet been able to reach.

Oh Noes!!!! Someone is referencing the GOS!!!
Actually, I really liked this post and thought it was a great reply to deBoner from Ohio.
Martin
@John Cole: The other day you or DougJ (not that it matters) mentioned how GOS, particularly the comments and diaries, tended to be fairly worthless and hysterical, but that the front pagers were pretty good. Apparently that meant that all liberals were douchebags and should be shoved into the ovens, or something, and now you’re saying you want to have buttsecks with them all.

@Zifnab: not only is Cactus Barbie panhandling for a fence, once she grifts the cash, she’s gonna use prison/inmate labor to build it. Will be fun to see this take place in Pima and Santa Cruz counties, where folks are anti-fence, anti-SB1070. My guess is that she’ll try and use the inmates that are in the private prison system, since she can get cheap labor from them while the feds are paying her to house them.
I finally got to sign a Baja Arizona and a recall Brewer petition last weekend.
Scott
@Zifnab: Sorry, but I’ve been reading some of the stuff that has come out of the Texas Lege, and we’re still crazier than Arizona.
Besides an Arizona-lite immigration bill, we’re also focused hard on getting guns on college campuses and in churches, and on making sure they’ve cut taxes for chaw.
Martin
@Zifnab: Yet with typical Texas pride, your state shows little evidence of giving up the fight. We do appreciate your efforts to keep it somewhat in check.

In many cities, northern at least, Black violence is often ignored because it is mostly Black on Black and little affects White people.
The Southwest does not have a large Black population and it may be that they are treating Hispanics as honorary Whites. I would guess that most Hispanic violence there is inter-group but the Whites haven’t learned to ignore it yet because it is being pimped as a threat to Whites.

@piratedan: I think we can get a remake of “Bridge on the River Kwai” out of this. Won’t require a whole lot of plot reworking, either.

Treats from the story JC links:
I’m guessing that would be because of this:
[itals added]
So: forced labor is indeed the Arizona way of cost control.
Not that I think that there’s the slightest chance in hell that whoever the Brewer crime family hires will actually bill the state any less than the feds would have paid. That would miss the point of the free market, right.
Martin
@fasteddie9318: I wouldn’t expect him to know how douchebaggy the Register is.
Warren Terra
Maybe the idea is to have the prison labor build the fence from the southern side, then leave them there and say they’ve escaped and are now Mexico’s problem? Save money on construction and incarceration! Plus, this is Arizona, so a bunch of the inmates were probably arrested for various versions of Breathing While Brown; some may even have Mexican citizenship, if only through their parents or grandparents. It’s win-win!
The Dangerman
Gotta admit; Boehner getting thrashed towards inches of his life makes a certain degree of sense (2 Trillion in cuts? He does remember Hoover, right?).
Gravenstone
@Tom Levenson: Saw an earlier article on this where some AZ legislator was touting the labor costs as “50 cents an hour!” with the
slavecaptive labor force they’re envisioning.Martin
@Warren Terra:
Oh, you’re completely missing the point. The reason that the private prison industry exists is because incarceration is profitable. The private prisons bid on the contracts against companies employing free labor. The taxpayer pays full rate pretty much no matter what, but rather than the state using that money to improve, I don’t know, rehabilitation services, the private prisons can use it for profits instead.
When prisoners = profits, you hold onto them, and encourage as many more as you can get away with. Hell, you might even propose a law that makes prisoners out of people who can’t show ID at the proper time.
Martin
@The Dangerman: He does remember the ‘kill Medicare’ vote he took just a few weeks ago, right?

hell the tools/weapons are one thing, putting your prisoners out there where drug packages can be dropped off at minimal risk from the external supply chain is another. hell guards will be smuggling drugs out of those prisons to sell on the street. the baddest of the inmates won’t be able to afford parole.

The $82,356 they collect are going to build about 150 feet of fence. So, umm, good luck with that.

Where’s comrade Dennis G to point out the obvious to us (no slam on Dennis, it’s just his thing), that the proposed use of prisoner labor is just another form of labor theft by corrupt assholes who should be serving time themselves?
This is just another scheme for the Arizona kleptocracy to rip off both the taxpayers and the prisoners, buidling a fence that has nothing at all to do with going after white employers seeking cheaper labor they can more readily exploit.

I don’t have time to use The Google but I did read that GA has more undocumented workers than AZ. If that is the case I think that they should build a wall around the state. This might inconvenience some folks going to Disney World but states have to do what states have to do.

Prison labor? Good thing Arizona is so far away from China or people might think that it was slave labor. Two things; hwat’s the over/under on how long it takes Rand Paul to show up for a photo op and what’s the over/under on how long it will be until speeding while brown gets you six months on the fence?
Dream On
@Bill Murray: Yes – hurry home early.
Mnemosyne
They’re just following in Colorado’s footsteps. When they realized that their strict laws against hiring illegal workers meant that they didn’t have enough people to work on farms, they just put prisoners to work. But it’s okay — the prisoners are happy to do the work, you see! I bet they even sing while they work.
Dennis SGMM
@Mnemosyne:
“When you was slaves, you sang like birds. Now how about it? How ’bout an old fashioned Mexican work song?”
Mnemosyne
@Dennis SGMM:
A song, you say?

FBI statistics show that the top four safest US cities are all in border states, Phoenix among them.
Triassic Sands
Arizona has to stop the creation of Baja Arizona or they’re going to have to build an even longer, more expensive fence to control the threat posed by Baja AZ.
