This is funny, from Charles Blow (via Steve M.):
I first met Donald Trump a couple of months ago at a cocktail party. Someone introduced us, and he immediately started in on a speech about how beloved he was among blacks. He said that everywhere he went, blacks were telling him to run for president and that some hip-hop stars had told him that he was the most popular white man among black people.
soonergrunt
Well, if that was ever true outside of Trump’s warped self-perception, it ain’t true now.
Off to donate blood.

Oy. Laugh? Cry? Commit murder? All three!
The Snarxist Formerly Known As Kryptik
Remember, this isn’t about endearing himself to actual brown people, Black, Hispanic, or otherwise.
It’s about appealing to folks that want to believe racism is dead and gone with, and thus a meritocracy where they can blame the lack of brown people’s success on how much they fail as human beings. Trump’s mistake was trying to bellow to an actual African-American in Blow, but make no mistake, it’s not going to hurt him with the folks he REALLY needs to appeal to.
Villago Delenda Est
I think one of his problems is that The Donald does not have a functioning snark detector. Or sarcasm detector.
maya
I don’t think 50Cent even sounds as wealthy as the Donald is.
BOSS BITCH
He must be referring to Russell Simmons and P. Diddy.
J
Blow is rightly appalled by the Donald. But the tone of the piece, as revealed in the pull quote “Trump is dragging the right down…” and the concluding paragraph:
“… the right is making itself smaller by applauding him, and, in so doing, forfeiting what little moral and intellectual standing that they have left.”
does make one wonder where he’s been.
piratedan
who does this asshat think he is? Ferris Buehler?
gn
He’s a media attention-seeker who believes his own hype. I personally am beginning to think that this entire “campaign” is the most brilliant piece of performance art in some time. It proves that the easiest way (for even a known chronic and perpetual attention-seeker) to receive vast amounts of national media attention in the US in the year 2011 is to be a teapartying birther or other variant of outrageous anti-POTUS kook/crank. Very important piece of art, and I thank the media whore Trump for it.
Comrade DougJ
@J:
Blow is an idiot, he’s not worth reading in general.

The phrase “20 pounds of shit crammed into a five-pound sack” comes to mind.
"Serious" Superluminar
Oh Trump’s just another snotty-nosed, prima donna, millionaire punk. Let it go, Mastertroll, let it go.
Tim F.
I know for a fact that the guy who played Kramer is the most popular white person among black people.
Linda Featheringill
What? No one assumed that Trump is the Republican most black people would like to see run against Obama?
Hee-hee.

I know a lot of pollsters tend to follow-up on news stories. I’m just trying to imagine the Pew or Gallup poll questions on this:

@gn:
I dont’ think so. After all, it’s not the elite intellectuals giving his show those ratings. It’s the same people supporting his “candidacy.” When they find out they’ve been played like cheap fiddles, they will abandon Trump and his ego will wither in the vacuum.
If there’s any justice, this will lead to his third bankruptcy.
Felanius Kootea (formerly Salt and freshly ground black people)
The Donald is referring to Snoop Dogg’s enthusiastic endorsement of his candidacy during his Comedy Central roast. In a parallel universe where Trump has a full head of perfectly coiffed hair that in no way brings to mind dead squirrels.

@debbie: His companies have declared bankruptcy 4 times. See:

for the story. (via Brilliant at Breakfast)
ETA: He has managed not to declare a personal bankruptcy, but I don’t think he comes out looking so great at business from these business failures.
gn
@debbie: don’t get me wrong, I no longer think it’s deliberate. More like self-caricature. But it proves that the media props up the teaparties; Trump is a teapartying birther for the purpose of getting media attention. If he did not launch his “campaign” in this fashion, he would not be receiving this much press.
His year 2000 “campaign” was actually issues-based. We’re in a media environment which has deteriorated considerably.
sherifffruitfly
What? Isn’t the first thing we ALL think when we meet a black person is to tell him or her how much black people love us?
What’s wrong with you weirdos?
lolol!
Nutella
Uuurrggghhh.
He’s the kind of asshole who meets some random black person and has to announce to the random black person what black people (all of them!) think.
Not a racist, oh no, just because he saw this person not as a person but as a representative of blackness.

I was trying to think what the post title reminded me of, and I finally remembered this.

@John Cole: well he’s got that working for him, I’m guessing he needs to work on the sportos and the motorheads, geeks, sluts, bloods, wasteoids, and the dweebie voters, I assume he already has the dickhead vote ;-)

Charles Blow; was there ever a more appropriate name?

@Comrade Mary: Nothing, and I mean nothing, will ever trump Barney singing Tupac. Definitely NSFW.

Charles Blow is somewhat less full of (sh)it, and of himself, than the Donald. And Blow has better-looking hair, too. But by telling a story that implies Trump will shamelessly pander to anyone standing before him — not that I’m disputing the truth of the implication — he’s giving Trump exactly what he says Trump doesn’t deserve: attention. Did that occur to Blow as he was writing his column?
Fucen Pneumatic Fuck Wrench Tarmal
oh, man, teh donalds fails so deeply.
where is rosie o’donnell to announce that she too, is a family values conservative as it turns out, that she bootstrapped her way out of poverty under st. reagan, and now she wishes to give back to the gop that has done so much for her career, by announcing her intention to explore running for standard bearer of the republican party.
she could be blasting the hell out of trump on a daily basis, and for a change, low-info apolitical-americans would end up rooting for her.
Ben
Maybe we should take Trump at his word. Maybe the blacks really do love him like he says they do, pretty much as “the blacks” love the people who put together this web site:

replicnt6
Can we bring back Spy magazine’s epithet for Trump: “Short-fingered vulgarian”?
I’m also curious: people keep referring to that thing on his head as a “comb-over”. Is there really any reason to believe that that is connected to his head somewhere? Man, Republicans do love ’em some bad wigs.
Amir_Khalid
@replicnt6:
It can’t be a wig. What self-respecting wig maker would come up with something as ugly and obviously fake as that?
Anya
@PurpleGirl: The dude is in a reality teevee, shouldn’t that tell us he’s not as rich as he claims. He’s employed at NBC, just like Sharon Osbourne, and all the other reality teevee judges and “stars”. I never understood that vulgarian’s appeal.
@Comrade DougJ: He’s on the top of the Village idiots.

@piratedan: The whole Bueller comparison is interesting because if Trump gets to run, come election day there will be a lot of Republican voters sitting in their cars like Cameron.
“They’ll keep calling me. They’ll keep calling me until I come over. They’ll make me feel guilty. Uh…this is ridiculous. Ok, I’ll go. I’ll go. I’ll go. Goddammit! Argh! Shit!”
Republican jumps out of the car, starts kicking and stomping things on the ground.
Warren Terra
This is just him being canny – after all, Black voters are the biggest possible growth area for Republicans. In what other demographic category could the Republicans triple their vote and still not be receiving a respectable minority? Even with the best efforts of Hans Spakovsky the Republicans probably couldn’t manage to double their share of Old White Men. Trump is just going where the growth opportunity is – and it’s obvious that the greatest possible growth opportunity is among those people who will never, ever vote for a Republican.
Gravenstone
The Donald lives in a world of his own imagining. Due to the moral bankruptcy of what passes for our media, combined with the utter soul rot of what passes for the modern Republican party, the rest of us are being forced to endure it. For now.
Gravenstone
@Joey Maloney: Shatner is Canadian, so we’re spared the battle of the bad hair pieces. Still, he’d be worlds funnier than Trump, so there is a certain sense of shame in his ineligibility.

@Purplegirl:
Thanks for the correction. I was living in NYC when the first two took place, but had moved before the third and fourth. Amazing how, when you cross the Hudson into the rest of the country, Trump becomes as insignificant as any worm.
Someone needs to tell Trump that while The Blacks like him, his party is busy trying to disenfranchise them. He may want to have a word or two with the RNC.

@PurpleGirl: I think the asbestos companies that decided to declare bankruptcy — while they still had huge of assets — are considered geniuses in the business.
They discovered new way to screw the poor people they owe money to.

I thought Trump had good relations with The Blacks, a wealthy couple from upper Manhattan. At least that is what I thought he meant when he said he had good relations with The Blacks.
Just Some Fuckhead
The blacks love the Donald.

Midnight Marauder
I’ve read a lot of gross things Donald Trump has said since he started this little infantile stunt (“I have a great relationship with the blacks. I’ve always had a great relationship with the blacks.”), but this is by far the grossest thing.
Ugh. Just…fucking ugh.
iriedc
Hmmm… I suppose The Blacks might love him, I don’t really know. I do know most African-Americans in my family and neighborhood are over him with his Birther crap, and have no intention of voting for The Donald.

I didn’t think it was possible, but unless I stop reading now and never read about or listen to Trump again, I’m definitely going to hate him more and more and more.
Trump is beloved by Trump — it’s hard to believe genuine affection extends beyond the end of his (nearly limitless) ego.
