I’ve gone through the thread from last night about whether or not I should burn stuff in my garden and plow it under, and the general consensus seems to be “You’ll shoot your eye out.”
I don’t know what I was thinking, either.

To all the Doctor Who fans, did you catch Sally Forth in yesterdays comics?

Hey John – did you see that Paul Krugman quoted you?

Yeah. Don’t be that neighbor making it impossible for every other neighbor to open their windows. Plus that’s a lot of unnecessary carbon in the air.

Not if you do it naked. (Singing showtunes optional).

Cole, save that $100K in medical damage and just pay some outfit to do it. And have a glass of one of your specialty teas while you watch them from behind a screen door, with full baseball catchers’ gear strapped tight.

We’re you planning on using a flamethrower? I missed that part.

@Just Some Fuckhead:
I recommended using RPGs. Why take out an eye when you can take out a Suburban Panzer?

My “pet” issue is animal welfare; so I had to write this post:
Preserve Animal Welfare Funding
and I could have been more diplomatic…. but then I wasn’t.
I hope it doesn’t ignite a flame war in my comments, but isn’t silence consent?
And it goes to show at least one conservative loves his kitties; there is hope, people!

Burning stuff for your garden isn’t a bad idea, but not pine branches. They spark like crazy and don’t produce any ash.
Stick to the brambles and stuff, and you’ll be ok. And don’t burn any poison ivy! Also, a very hot fire isn’t good for topsoil. If you have a gravel driveway, that’s the place to do it. Or in an old 55 gallon drum.
Finally, compost is better than burning, and so are wood chips.

I guess Katie Couric is leaving CBS News. I can’t remember the last time I watched a network nightly news. Five years ago? Have they changed? Are the last fifteen minutes still devoted to Big Pharma infomercials?

Now how about writing a nice fat check to OFA?
scav
@kdaug: That would be a garden, although I’d want it measured in feet not inches. I’d find any number of dark corners and send my cousin’s kids down them. Kids haven’t been allowed to watch a show yet, but I’ve made sure they know what a sonic screwdriver is for.
Sing a River Song
@Belafon (formerly anonevent): Excellent. Would have been even better if they had mentioned the Chris Eccleston year, but I’m glad the show is getting a wider audience.

I know I shouldn’t respond, but “looking for savings” isn’t the same thing as “proposing reductions in spending”. E.g. stepped-up fraud enforcement often way more than pays for itself; addressing the inefficiencies of dual-eligibles, etc.

@kdaug: “Blink” is near the top of my Top 5 Episodes list. And the nice thing about it is that it’s a pretty good starting point for a newbie.

@kdaug: Moffat has come up with some of best villains anywhere.
For Halloween, I wore a bow tie and fez and carried a mop while walking my kids through the neighborhood. I had one person ask why I was carrying a mop.

@Belafon (formerly anonevent): So bow ties and fezs are really in fact cool? Brilliant.

@Joe Beese:
Today I signed the FDL petition to Secretary Gates and others to allow Kucinich and other officials to visit with Bradley Manning. Have also commented at Whitehouse.gov. This is absolutely one issue where Obama could both please his base and stop the stupid terror practices. If there is an issue that has me most disappointed with him it’s his lack of progressive and humane steps to eliminate those practices of the Bush years. What would it cost him? IMO he has nothing to lose except a few brownie points with the neocon conservatives and they aren’t going to vote for him anyway.
Besides, this is the right thing to do. He promised transparency and he can easily deliver some here.
And, with a h/t to the previous thread, there are a lot of pie fights going on over at GOS, but I happen to agree with Lawrence O’Donnell on this matter. A primary fight is always good for a political party and serves to keep a politician aware of his or her base. Centrist that he is, Obama NEEDS to be brought left somewhat. Perhaps he, in fact, has earned the opportunity to be primaried. It’s happened to other good Democratic Presidents. Let’s see if he can don some fighting gloves and come out swinging for those who worked, donated, and fought for him.
Many of the commenters in a few of those pie diaries note that while disappointed in Obama they will vote for him because the options from the other side are entirely unpalatable. We are looking at the same scenario in 2012 that we had in 2010. After being dissed time and time again, it’s awfully hard to gin up any enthusiasm. I’ve been called by OFA already and for various reasons, mostly economic, I declined to participate.

Are there no unemployed 11 year olds in your hood willing to work below minimum wage and carry their own HC and liability insurance for such an opportunity?

@WereBear: Good for you for publicizing that. No good deed goes unpunished for me, though, because I had to look at a photo of my smarmy representative while I answered the math quiz (3 * one =?) to verify that I am a real person before it would send my message.
My second comment is really a question – glad you wrote about it in your blog, but wondering about the timing of something so political while you are applying for the Pet Blogger position. Then i wondered about the ethics of not posting something because it might interfere with getting a job. Then I decided to just go back to bed and try to sleep off my sore throat and fever. Funny how everything seems so complicated when you don’t feel well….

Since it’s an open thread I’ll just link to a lovely little piece of evidence that Pennsylvania’s environment is truly fucked.

I debated even applying, as it would be “Blogging for the Man,” as it were. However, they are looking for a self-taught cat relationship expert, and I humbly believe I am the single most qualified person on the planet. If they are sincere about their search, they have their person.
And I’m not changing what I do one iota because of it.

@kdaug: I figured it was something like that. I have a minature Dalek model that I terrorise the cats with every so often, but I never much watched the good Doctor.
I have some LOTR stuff, so I hope you get your cool piece of Whostuff ™
kdaug
@Paul in KY: Do yourself a favor and follow Kristine’s advice. Watch ‘Blink’.
From Wikipedia: “For “Blink”, Steven Moffat won the BAFTA Craft and BAFTA Cymru awards for Best Writer,[2][3] and the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form.”
It’s seriously awesome, and it doesn’t really involve the Doctor at all (ie, Doctor-lite / non-serialized / doesn’t matter if you’ve never seen a damn episode in your life).

@kdaug:
So true, so true …. “Blink” is one of the best TV-Sci-Fi episodes ever; any time, any series: would heartily recommend watching it, “Dr. Who” fan or not.
And I say this as a fan completely convinced that between them, Steven Moffat and Matt Smith have utterly ruined the franchise. Though I can’t say that it’s really Matt’s fault…
TooManyJens
People say stuff like this, and I just can’t understand it at all. I get not liking Moffat’s writing or Smith’s portrayal, but there have been writers and Doctor incarnations that people didn’t like before, and they didn’t ruin everything. Can you elaborate?
For my part, I think Moffat’s done some brilliant work but he repeats himself too much. He never should have revisited the Weeping Angels, IMO. I didn’t expect to like Smith, but I really enjoy his take on the Doctor. Obviously YMMV.
kdaug
The damn show’s been running longer than I’ve been alive. (Googleplex says 1963 was the first episode.)
They’re doing something right.

that was probably my fav episode of the David Tenant years of Dr Who universe. It’s the one I made my sister watch so that she was hooked and the one I tell my friends about to get them hooked.

By the way, that Democratic election official they trotted out in Waukesha County to say everything was kosher now says she doesn’t know where the numbers she looked at came from:

I bet she has granite countertops.
scav
@TooManyJens: I’m still trying to wrap my head around people thinking Moffat + Smith is more damaging than Nathan-Turner + Colin Baker. Mileages must clearly vary a lot. The Doctor’ll be fine. And when Moffat’s on form — yikes. I’d put up with a lot of mild repeats to attain those moments.

I didn’t read the comments to the other thread, but I use an electric shredder/chopper to chop up all my yard debris and turn it into nice, healthy compost which then is added to the gardens and flower pots.
Of course, the thing gets jammed sometimes, and you have to take it apart to clean out the jam , but the blades aren’t that sharp, even I haven’t hurt myself on this thing. Of course, I don’t have the record for self destruction that you do, John, so take any and all advice with a grain of salt.
I am glad you’re not going to be burning anything, men and fire are always a bad combo (see you tube).
This is the shredder I have:

@scav: “Silence in the Library” and “Forest of the Dead.” My two fave eps along with “Blink.”
Speaking of which, it may get buried in a dying thread, but this link to a Dr Who panel with Neil Gaiman–go to about 16:00, and Neil’s comments.

Souder is absolutely the worst questioner so far. I am developing sympathy for OzoneR because Indiana kept sending him back for 15 years. Kucinich is the best one.

LaHood, obviously a really nice guy, came very close to losing his temper at the end of the 5 minutes. Annals of Republican stupidity writ large.

Norton got to question LaHood for 17 minutes while the real Congresscritters were having a vote. Obviously very impressive woman. LaHood started looking/sounding exasperated in about the 10th minute.
