Preach it, Sister Louise (my Congresswoman):
“This is probably one of the worst times we’ve seen because the numbers of people elected to Congress. I went through this as co-chair of the arts caucus,” Slaughter said, according to a CNS News report. ”In ’94 people were elected simply to come here to kill the National Endowment for the Arts. Now they’re here to kill women.”
[…..]“You are allowed to have an abortion if you have been raped or it’s a matter of incest,” said Slaughter. “However, you have to keep a receipt. Did you know that? It’s sort of like an old German Nazi movie. Show me your papers!”
Republicans bash reproductive rights to pump up their base and get Evangelical votes, but pro-choice white suburban women ignore this and vote Republican (less than white suburban men do, but still)…for now. Every day the bucket goes to the well, but one day the bottom will drop out.

MOORE AWARD MOORE AWARD MOORE AWARD! ! ! ! !

Comrade DougJ is shrill.
BTW, here’s my ‘shop for the Paul Ryan Unicorn Pony Coloring book (inspired by comments at LGM).

Sure sounds like Slaughter is in line for a Moore Award doesn’t it?
JCT
Did you folks watch the trainwreck pressor by the female GOP house members? It’s over at TPM: http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/04/house-gop-women-dodge-questions-on-abortion-provisions-at-press-conference.php?ref=fpblg
A mind-blowing, duplicitous betrayal. They should just give it up and admit that they are a bunch of misogynists masquerading as women.

DougJ’s link is to an anti-abortion blog that includes a link to Congresswoman Slaughter’s site, to, as the pro-life blogger put it, “complain.” I made sure to take advantage of that and send an email letting Slaughter know she’s awesome.
Brachiator
@JCT:
I was waiting to see if GOP women would openly endorse oppression of women. Now I see what vile pieces of shit these people are.
opie jeanne, formerly known as Jeanne Ringland
The bottom dropped out of that bucket a long time ago for us (horror story you don’t want to hear) but we were already turning into liberals. We vote for women’s reproductive rights as much as for any other issue. We have daughters, we used to have mothers and grandmothers who raised us well.
Elia Isquire
@JCT: I felt that her response was lacking in Luntz-approved talking points. I mean, what about my children and grandchildren’s future?
JCT
@Brachiator: It was a real jaw-dropper.
One of my favorite parts (from the transcript:
AHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Not Jean Schmidt! But really, uh, “ladies” the answer to that fucking SIMPLE question about Title X funding is “yes”. Not mutter, mutter, package, mutter. I didn’t hear a single clear yes in the bunch. WTF?
opie jeanne, formerly known as Jeanne Ringland
@Nicole: I wrote her a note too. She is awesome.

@JCT: Shameful.

Kind of sad that at the end of the day, these idiots were voted in, not dropped on the US from Mars. And they get away with their distortions precisely because many of those who should be paying attention have tuned out and vote based on a backlash against those they perceive to be in control of the economy/government and the state of their pocketbooks (without regard for what exactly is causing the economic hurt they are experiencing). The union-member teabaggers in Ohio and Wisconsin should have known better, but they didn’t and now it will take some time to undo the mess the Republicans create in those states. It’s like voters never seem to learn about Republican dirty tricks and no one ever tries to show them the patterns that have existed for the last 30 years. Either that or they actually like the misery that Republicans create. I’m starting to wonder.
OzoneR
I told this story the other day; when Gerry Ferraro was running for Vice President, she visited union workers in Illinois who told her they would vote for Reagan, even though they knew he was anti-labor, because America couldn’t show weakness in front of the Russians.
People don’t vote their interests and sometimes I wonder why we try to keep protecting something they clearly don’t care if they have or not.

@OzoneR:
Again, it’s all about pissing off the libs, and looking for sufficient hippie punching.
Master of Karate and Friendship
Well, let’s be honest: the bottom will fall out when the other party offers an alternative, rather than “we’re slightly better than the other guys!”

@The Political Nihilist Formerly Known As Kryptik:
If Democratic voters seem to want to punch hippies, why does it surprise anyone that Democratic politicians do it too?
Why is it so hard for the left to see their enemy is not politicians, it’s not even corporations, it’s the people who give the latter two enough leverage, and sometimes force them to, punch hippies.
your enemy is the public.
OzoneR
@Master of Karate and Friendship:
no, it won’t, because that party will then cease to exist.
There are two voting blocs in this country, them, and the people who are just slightly less crazy than them.
Master of Karate and Friendship
@OzoneR:
“There are two voting blocs in this country, them, and the people who are just slightly less crazy than them.”
Nonsense.

@Elia Isquire: Wow. I think Sullivan needs to go back and read his blog from those 2-3 days when he was getting mail from women who had late-stage abortions and as to why they did it (i.e. because they might have died, or their infant was going to live for 30 painful minutes. He actually appeared to be developing a soul for a couple minutes way back then. Now, just unhinged.

Doug J has Louise Slaughter as his elected rep, I got Jean Schmidt. Winning? Doug J, son of Doug J(TM)in that contest, ferg*dsake. One of us voted for our representative in the house; one of us did not. Can you guess who did which? Sigh.
JCT
@a hip hop artist from Idaho (fka Bella Q):
My condolences. She is a fucking horror on all levels.
Elia Isquire
For people who have Sullivan’s mindset on this stuff — and he’s hardly alone so, in an attempt to wean ourselves from him, let’s just go with the generalization — because politics is more or less an abstraction defined through “debating” with people in class or at dinner parties, they think that the same social manners that would apply in those situations should apply to all politics at large; and they don’t understand why anyone would use rhetoric that’s any different.
beltane
@flounder: I am assuming that when Sully was out ill a few months back he was really having his chip upgraded to wingnut 4.0. The old model was producing unreliable results.
a hip hop artist from Idaho (fka Bella Q)
@JCT:Thank you for understanding. And worse, she has an (actual) twin sister who lives in the area (5 miles from us) full time. So I can see her (sister) in the hardware stors as well as on the TV. Gack.
Mnemosyne
@JCT:
I did like their whole “Well, if the Senate is so smart, let them write a budget!” non-argument argument.
Tissue Thin Pseudonym (JMN)
@Master of Karate and Friendship: You realize that polling shows that almost 60% of those who identify as Democrats *want* Obama and the Dems to compromise on the budget. The people complaining that the base would only be roused by taking more hardline positions are misidentifying the base of the Democratic party.
pika
I see Rep. Slaughter in the local Wegmans all the time–she is gracious and careful with her language. Sullivan should take note.
Mnemosyne
@Master of Karate and Friendship:
So which Democratic governor has passed a law allowing him (or her) to dissolve any municipality that s/he decides has “failed” with no input from the voters and no recourse? Which Democrat made collective bargaining illegal in his/her state?
Take your time. I’m sure you’ll be able to find a Democrat who did that this year since both sides are the same, right?

You’re lucky my congresscritter ran as Progessive then after getting elected and attending the betryus dog and pony show is pro-war and is about 65% voter. Voting Green in 2012
JCT
@Mnemosyne: Yeah, grade school level “logic” at it’s very best. Hey, Jean — your pals in the House are selling women down the river — wake up!
I guess this is what happens when you play with your “Math is hard” Barbie for too long — given that Title X / PP funding is a freaking flyspeck in the entire budget.
If old “Mean Jean” was smart enough to know how to USE a calculator I might ask if hers was broken (or had gastritis), but it is hopeless, just like those poor excuses for “representatives” on display today.
OzoneR
@Master of Karate and Friendship:
See, this is the problem…liberals who keep believing there’s some large organized progressive voting blocs out there despite all evidence to the contrary.

I’m proud Louise is my representative, and will be saddened to return to Bob Dold!s district in May.
gwangung
There could be one…but someone’s gotta get off their butt and help organize it.
Yeah, there are crappy politicians in the Democratic party. Lots of them. But they represent their constituency far better than we care to think about.
rikyrah
this was absolutely on point. thanks for pointing it out.
Buffalo Rude
I lived in the western end of Rep. Slaughter’s “earmuff” district for 7 years (in the Allentown neighborhood of Buffalo) and, IMHO, there isn’t a Federally elected official more in tune to the needs of their constituents than the Honorable Representative from New York’s 28th District. Unfortunately I now live in the district of the detestable Rep. Higgins. An earnest Corporacrat (see: 2005 Bankruptcy bill) if there ever was one.
Go Green. Ian Murphy for NY-26!

As a white male who does in fact hate women… I have to say these GOPers are just pathetic. I mean this is the face of misogyny in America? Seriously? This is the best they can do? Fucking Planned Parenthood?! That’s it?
Sigh… there is no way men are going to survive. The bitches are taking over, these clowns aren’t about to stop them. Matriarchy here we come.
