Not exactly failparade, but I did get word this morning that I got a 10% raise. So I’m sort of happy.

My green beans are leading the fail parade. They look like crap. Leaves all rolled up and wilted. They looked fine yesterday. I’m not happy.
Asparagus keep falling over. First time I’ve planted asparagus, so I don’t know what to do. Do I add another layer of soil to prop them up? Is this normal? This is the first year for them (and my first time ever trying to grow them), so I’m leaving them to frond and die back down to feed the roots and crowns. I just don’t quite know what to do about the falling over. Too much sun? Too much/little water? Anyone know?
Actually, Charlie Sheen is. He’s performing here tonight. Or maybe it was last night…. I saw it in the papers and didn’t really care enough to look further.
As a government worker, I guess I will be out of a job next week. I suppose I could count myself as one of the luckier ones. I would be a non-critical employee, meaning they show me the door right before they lock it. Critical employees have to report to work as usual, but they don’t get paid! Isn’t that the cutest thing you have ever heard?
I guess I’ll get a lot of yard work done.

My neighborhood has very little fail today. I voted at about 2pm here in Madison and was number 1,281, with still 6 hours left of voting. In 2009, when we reelected the State Supreme Court Justice Shirley Abrahamson (the one Prosser called a bitch), my ward (the fightin’ 34th!) had about 1,260 votes total for the whole day, 95% of them for Abrahamson. I take it a good sign (but I’ll still be on pins and needles).

I got depressed when I read this letter from my congressman (R-Idiot) today:
We need to take back our country from this Administration’s excessive government spending and government growth. We need to cut taxes as America has one of the highest corporate tax rates in the world. This would free up capital for companies to invest in more jobs and expanding [sic] product research and innovation.

When it comes to their base, Democratic leaders know they will command undying, unbreakable support no matter how many times they kick their base, because of the fear that has been instilled in the base — not fear of Terrorists or Immigrants (that’s the GOP’s tactic), but fear of Sarah Palin, the Kochs and the Tea Party. … dedicated partisans who pledge their unbreakable, eternally loyal support for any Party or politician are going to be steadfastly ignored (or worse) by that Party or politician, and rightfully so. If you spend two years vehemently objecting that certain acts so profoundly offend your principles but then pledge unequivocal support no matter what almost two years in advance to the politicians who engage in them, why would you expect your objections to be heeded? Any rational person would ignore them, and stomp on your beliefs whenever doing so benefited them.
As in: Caving on the KSM trial on the very day you announce you’re running for re-election.
… the notion that “Congress made him do it” is totally false: aside from the fact that the Obama administration long ago announced that it would retain the military commission system, the White House — long before Congress acted to ban transfers of detainees to the U.S. — removed decision-making power from the DOJ in the KSM case and made clear it would likely reverse Holder’s decision.
I am leading the fail parade, misplacing critical objects, entering key information incorrectly and getting locked out of accounts.
I’m cool with it being this way today so long as everything goes smoothly tomorrow, when I’m at the airport.

Well, congratulations! Celebrate and have a good time. This is wonderful. You earned it or at least made it look as if you earned it.
just more proof of the hypocrisy rampant in politics…. everyone remember the issue that took place in Arizona over the SB 1070 law regarding profiling folks if suspected of being brown while in Arizona. Due to our financial woes, strangely enough, the Gov saw fit to cull 15m from the budget that covers the anti-crime drug task force based in Pima County, you know, the one county that has 250 miles of shared border with Mexico. I guess the immigrant/drug issue is no longer relevant since they’ve all gotten elected. yet somehow there was 5m floating around to give to Pinal County’s sheriff Paul Babeu, so he could continue his outstanding work against illegal immigrants. Note that Pinal County has no border with Mexico and you can have three guesses as to which sheriff supported SB 1070 and which didn’t. When State Senator Pearce was asked for comment, he indicated that this was indeed payback for Dupnik’s statements post the Giffords shooting. To show further how Republicans could give a crap, all of the Pima County Republicans in the state Lege went along with defunding Pima County.

Joe Beese (the fat everyman!) has to be either a ratfucker or he’s got a serious case of anti-obama OCD. He never discusses anything, he just pushes the propaganda. Over and over and over again, my friends. Relentless, he is.
Hardcore objectivists often criticize liberals for basing decisions on emotion, rather than reason. My father saw our family politics no differently. In his mind, it was reasonable to ask that I emancipate myself and work for a living. To me, it felt like he was asking me to sacrifice my childhood so he didn’t have to pay child support. To me, it felt like abandonment.

Hey, California proved again we’re (well, most of us) not like Arizona. One also discovers we have our own Twin Peaks, which I guess shouldn’t be surprising. I wonder how the coffee is?
Around here, the common technique is to plant the crowns at the bottom of a deepish (say, 6″) furrow. Then, when you start seeing shoots, keep mounding the soil almost to the top of the shoots until the top of the mound get to be about 8-12 inches above the surrounding soil.
Plants need a considerable amount of water, although on has to be careful if the water table is high, which it is around here. Also, feed them plenty.
(“Around here” is Stockton, CA, which has the distinction of being both “The Asparagus Capital of the World™” and Forbes Magazine’s “Most Miserable City in America™” 2011.)
Well, here’s an event that is not leading the fail parade, or at least involves someone who would say, “Who’s leading the fail parade? Good news, America! We ALL are!” Premiering April 8th: American: The Bill Hicks Story.

Fail parade is a column actually printed in the Springfield (MO) News-Leader.
“Tim Kaine announced that he is stepping down as Chairman of the Democratic National Committee to run for the U.S. Senate from the Commonwealth of Virginia.”
This is good news…he’s probably the only one who can hold that seat

Joe Nocera is on fire! This makes a statement all by itself that Bob Herbert thought of himself as criticizing corporate America in the name of the people who were outside. Nocera is there to criticize corporate America with the savviness of the people are inside.
