There are a couple of inches of oil on the floor of the Gulf of Mexico, and scientists think it will take a decade before the full effect of the spill is known. Yet BP is whining about the terms of the settlement, even though Feinberg is basing his math on a recovery by 2012.

Come on. There’s no proof that the oil is from the BP spill. Just because it wasn’t there before the spill and is there now doesn’t mean that the spill caused it. It could be a complete coincidence! Besides, making BP pay the real cost of cleanup would drive up energy prices.[/shill]

You might want to repost this one in an hour or so.

The oil will make a nice, date-known marker bed for geologists in the far future.
Not much other I can think of on the bright side.

That and Monday’s news about baby dolphin deaths on the rise in Gulf (via http://www.mcclatchydc.com/2011/02/21/109128/infant-dolphin-deaths-spiking.html, via Wonkette).

Well, hell.
I watched a NOVA special in which New Age philosophers were citing Hindu and Mayan religious teachings to argue that enlightened ages and dark ages are cyclical and the current dark age will reach its nadir on 12/21/2012 [how about that?] and things will turn around and slowly start to get better.
Assuming this bit of ancient wisdom is actually applicable to the present situation [big assumption, I know], I must say that it’s about time. I am certainly ready for some enlightenment.
Edited to add: Gotta go back to work. This particular pause for refreshment was not very cheerful.

Yeah, the best investment amoral greedy sociopaths ever made was their big push in controlling media and government. It’s “great” that even holding people responsible for epic level disasters they cause through deliberate catastrophe curve riding and penny pinching is “politically impossible” and will trigger an army of shills to guard your back from public opinion.
I wonder though if we shouldn’t just take accept their bullshit over corporate personhood and treat it like it was true.
Through the entity of “BP” in jail, cease its assets for “investigation” like we do the unfortunate suckers of drug raids. Prevent anyone working for or entering into it unless they physically talk to it through a white phone at the jailhouse.
I bet a few incidents like that would prevent things right quick.
Also, we desperately need to have new anti-trust and maximum corporate size in charter laws and enforcements, because all too often the corporate response to things is: “Whoops, we broke everything. Hey, you can’t punish us, we employ too many people to afford pissing off or doing anything about it.”
If it’s big enough to hold the world’s dominant superpower hostage, it’s WAY too big to be allowed to exist.

Yup, increasing offshore oil-drilling was a fantastic idea. Don’t worry, oil rigs don’t break down these days.
