He was paid $175 every two weeks, and a stipend at the end of his term for education. He loved it, and it made him a better person, mentally and physically.

In fact, here is a beautiful link showing Dick Armey complaining about the whole idea of Americorps in the 2003 Congress. OMB Watch also described Congressional Republicans wanting to halve Bush’s original Americorps request for that year.
What has changed is the completely nihilistic appeals that these folks think put them into office. Not cynical enough to think that they believe Obama would go along with slashing Americorps when community service is one of his main tropes.

That Obama is putting forward policy like an 80s era Republican while his opponents forward policy like a 60s era Klansman doesn’t make his policies LBJ liberal by default. @General Stuck: I think the problem is distraction and inattention far more than stupidity. The gooper message is carefully tested to appear to make sense if you don’t think about it too much—the way most people get their news. In particular, it’s designed to appear more or less internally consistent and simple enough to be easily repeated. That way people will hear the same thing from what seems a variety of sources, which will help shore up the appearance of internal consistency. This is all predicated on a large swath of voters who have to work long hours and so don’t really have the time to check out details. That’s why internal consistency of the story is far more important than whether it is a true account. Reality will eventually wear out the internal consistency, but by that point the Goopers have latched on to another shiny object, the politics have shifted, and so it takes a long time for the inattentive and distracted to catch on—if they ever do.

@General Stuck:
First and foremost, Obama’s ACA brings us closer to universal health care. But it does not take us all the way there by a fair stretch. I can still be without insurance. And I can still get priced out of care. It’s a step in the right direction. But it’s a step proposed under Republican Administrations in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Pretending the private health care system is a progressive or liberal ideal is absurd revisionist thinking.
Secondly, the ACA doesn’t really kick into effect until 2014. It doesn’t really really kick into effect until 2018. So Obama hasn’t accomplished even the limited scope of ACA just yet. Another year like ’10 could put us on the fast track to repeal under President Romney or Pawlenty or Palin.
Finally, Obama still clings to Bush-Era foreign policy and police powers. The Patriot Act isn’t going to get his Veto. The tax cuts still haven’t expired. And his justice department has been woefully disappointing in rolling back Bush-Era malfeasance. And – oh yeah – we’re STILL in Iraq and Afghanistan. Hell, we’re more in Afghanistan now than we were four years ago.
That doesn’t make Obama a screaming wingnut radical. But it does put one foot squarely in conservative territory.

@Zifnab:
It takes us to 95 percent or thereabouts, and there is no such thing as 100 percent short of having single payer or a national system like GB. 95 percent is considered “universal” by all but those bashing Obama.
Obama didn’t create our health care system as it is, so what is your point? That he didn’t use his dictatorial powers and abolish the old system and put in place by fiat the nirvana of single payer. It is these outrageous expectations put on Obama by left wing ideologues that defies explanation by otherwise intelligent people. It is as baffling as it is troubling.
And any sweeping reform is going to take time to implement, that is just common sense for a system as large as ours. It has to be paid for and the revenue raised to implement coverage for those that can’t afford it. There are already several important regulations in effect that gives those already with HC insurance more security. This is all nitpicky drivel imo.
No he doesn’t. Bush was utterly lawless and followed few existing laws. Obama is following the laws. The fact that some of them need revision for more protections is the job of congress. And once again, both the Patriot ACt and FISA current iterations are both far more constitutional than the originals Bush got passed. Though they both still need work.
As far as Afghanistan and Iraq are concerned, we are following the withdrawal plan in place for Iraq. You can’t just pack up and leave without causing even more problems for the Iraqi’s than our wreckless adventure there has already caused. Same with Afghan, that he campaigned on winning that war and doing what was necessary to do that. He has now reversed that and announced plans for withdrawal, beginning this summer. I wish it was sooner, I agree, and I do have overall problems with Obama on some of his warfighting policies concerning AQ, but they are a far cry from being bad as Bush.

And on the tax cut extension, while I personally would have like to see them expire now, that would have taken roughly 800 billion dollars out of the economy over the next two years, and would in effect have been an anti – stimulus bill of sorts, where I though liberals were against that and for more stimulus for the econ recovery. So there are pluses and minuses in play . And then there was the promise to extend the mc tax cuts from obama. So pick your poison.

I’ve got a question for the floor’s consideration. Does a society or social group (viewed kind of as a closed system) that decides to eliminate programs that address real problems in that society… actually end up saving any money. Follow along with me here: Let’s eliminate LIHEAP and WIC entirely, express our sympathies to those affected blah blah blah…and congratulate ourselves on the money we save. Of course the need doesn’t go away…we’re just saying we won’t address it. But is this true? When the mothers with their babies start begging in the streets. and the old folks are stacking up like frozen cordwood in the emergency rooms…are we such a pitiful excuse for a people that we will refuse to help? I think (hope?) not. So money will be spent…perhaps more money… and probably not in as rational or disciplined a way. A pompous mediocrity in the Federal government crows about saving the taxpayers money: he’s just sending the bill to the states. A pompous mediocrity of a governor (I live in Maine) says “no pain no gain” and passes the bill to the counties and towns. Now I’m not the sharpest tool in the shed…but this just all seems like a particularly specious and nasty shell game that has been allowed to go on far too long.
Zifnab
@General Stuck:
NO. Universal is considered “universal” by anyone in Great Britain that enjoys actually universal health care. What we have right now is a universal right to purchase insurance. And while that should cover 95% of the population, it hasn’t been implemented just yet so we still have to wait and see if large numbers of people simply opt out and pay the fine. The penalties are so low at the start – and premiums are so ridiculously high – that incentive to purchase remains very thin.
My point is that you can’t wave your hand at the reformed system and announce “liberalism! progressivism! sexyism!” when the system conforms far more closely to the conservative ideal system than the liberal one. Yes, Obama successfully achieved reform. A conservative reform.
This was a national success. But it was a resounded rebuke of single payer, which retains the brand of “politically infeasible”.
Obama is definitely better at following the law than Bush had been. And while that’s a point in his favor, it doesn’t excuse his support of the original Bush policies. He’s got a justice department and they should be arguing aggressively in favor of Gitmo detainee rights. They should be actively pushing precedent that will prevent the initial wiretapping abuses committed by the NSA and FBI. They should be pushing harder on voter disenfranchisement. Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld should have been indicted by now. Right now, Holder has been very proactive in DoJ ass-covering. The previous administration has received a big pass.
And the gradual draw down in Iraq might be good policy, but its bad politics. Every month we remain in Iraq is another couple billion out of the budget and another opportunity for “the situation to change requiring us to stay”. Meanwhile, the ramp up in Afghanistan might have been a campaign pledge – but fuck his campaign pledges. We didn’t get a public option, we didn’t get a tax hike on the rich, and we didn’t get climate change legislation or immigration reform. But Afghanistan is the hill Obama wants to plant his “campaign promise” pledge? I think not.
Obama’s priorities might be in line with what he thinks he can accomplish. And what can be accomplished might be decidedly right-leaning. But that doesn’t make Obama’s ultimate policy choices any less right-wing. I’m sure if he had 60 Russ Feingolds and 250 Nancy Pelosis in the Senate and House, things would be different. But only because they would be dragging him to the left.

I don’t have a problem with disappointment a liberal ideal hasn’t been accomplished, but your definition of liberal and conservative is stark black and white, and makes moot the whole concept of “progress” ergo progressive. It is either pass fail with no ideological continuim between the two left right ideals.
I don’t care if people are disappointed with Obama, or if his product of governance doesn’t measure up with their standard with what is “liberal” in their mind, or even success. What I object to is the odious equation, or comparison with Bush, or conservative charges over any part of a final bill that comes from compromise required in a democracy, albeit sometimes with folks on your own side of the isle.
And I do not agree with just about any standard you list in this comment. It looks like a conclusion searching for an excuse.
And further, that the left wing tactic of attacking Obama based on broad equating with Bush, or Obama actually worse than Bush, is not only not liberal, but is entirely a conservative, even tea party style of attack.
