Thanks to commentor Merrinc for a great photo.
The Spousal Unit is sulking because our Masshole Governor’s declaration of a ‘snow emergency’ was badly timed. If Deval had only waited till morning, the company would’ve called it a “snow day” instead of a “work from home day”…

Tigger is such a handsome boy. He’s my kind of cat (comfortable in the snow). Please please please send some of that snow my way. kthxbai.
Omnes Omnibus
@asiangrrlMN: We got some in Madison today.
asiangrrlMN
@Omnes Omnibus: Now you’re flat-out taunting me. I think we may have gotten an inch, but I want more more more.
@freelancer: Sure! And the snow, too?
freelancer
@asiangrrlMN:
You’re free to take all eight inches I got here in Omaha. Nevermind. I should just shut the fuck up from now on.
gwangung
@asiangrrlMN: Clap, clap, clap.
Yutsano
@freelancer:
Soooo biting my tongue.
Don’t stop on my account. I’m kinda enjoying this.
@asiangrrlMN: Obligatory KITTEH!! Same coloring as my Skitz too, who is thriving on the ranch. I saw him last time I was home, he’s getting chunky!
We’re barely pushing three inches of snow here, but the worst is it’ll freeze like mad tonight. I may not haz work tomorrow.
asiangrrlMN
@gwangung: Well, it was a fat pitch, you know.
@Yutsano: I saw you in a thread below. How you be? Yeah, I don’t like it when snow freezes over. It makes driving very hazardous. We’re supposed to get a couple more inches over the next few days. Feh.
@JGabriel: Yep. One of my FB friends posted, “Global warming, LOL” on her status. Sigh.
JGabriel
Prediction for tomorrow (y’all can see this coming I’m sure):
I like the snow, but overall I am just hating this fucking week.
.
Phyllis
I love that photo.
We got more ice than snow, which, me no likey. Ice storms are teh worst.
Parallel 5ths (Jewish Steel)
Having never before in my life known of South Korean fan-death I have now heard it mentioned twice in one week. Weirdsies.
CaseyL
Hey, remember the other thread, the one where I said, Hah, not a sign of that snow they predicted for Seattle?
Well, ‘hah’ indeed. Got about 3 inches accumulation, and it’s still falling. Oh so pretty. Oh so glad both my kitties are inside, warm and safe.
Oh so not looking forward to tomorrow’s commute.

I decided to look over the Wreck List at the GOS and was leaving the page when I noticed that Al Rodgers had a diary at the top of the Rec List! It may be like a rose blooming on top of a pile of shit but it was really something the good people at the GOS needed. I’m glad I caught that and popped in to view it. Talk about a tear jerker.
I will never post there again so all I can say from here is:
Thank you very much Al. Bless you.
asiangrrlMN
@Odie Hugh Manatee: Wow. Thanks for linking that. So many emotions as I look at those pics.
Amir_Khalid
In my time zone, it’s a mid-afternoon open thread …
That kitteh looks so at ease in playing in the snow. If my own very tropical Bianca ever saw snow, I suspect that she would call me to come outside and turn it off immediately.
Anyway, I saw this thing in a Nike store that was about halfway between a high-top sneaker and a hiking boot. What would a marketing type call such a thing? A hiking snoot? a high-top beaker?
Yutsano
@asiangrrlMN: If anyone ever asks you what love is, show them that picture of Captain Kelly holding his wife’s hand, with no further comment. Seeing someone at their worst and still wanting the best for them…that’s as close to holy as we can get.

@Yutsano:
Agreed.
asiangrrlMN
@Yutsano: You said it perfectly.
Yutsano
@freelancer: @asiangrrlMN: For some reason to me this song seems to be appropriate right now.
freelancer
@Yutsano:
I hate, and I mean hate modern Country music, but that is a solid track. The song I’ve had bubbling up in the back of my mind over the last four days as I think about Giffords, the shooter, and the country at large is the former singer of The Strokes, Julian Casablancas’ “Glass.”
Yutsano
@freelancer: I sense channeling of his inner Beatle there. Not that The Strokes are their heirs apparent per se, but I see a lot of Lennon and McCartney influence in that song.

Spousal Unit iz doing it rong. No bellyaching about “work-from-home day” vs. “snow day.”
This is his opportunity to show that he can be super-duper-extra-productive working from home, so that he can make a pitch for being allowed to work at home whenever he wants.
When God gives you lemons, make lemonade.

Nike uses the sub-brand “All Conditions Gear,” or “ACG” for its off-road shoes and apparel. Most folks call them trail-running shoes.

Yutsano
@burnspbesq: I almost wish I had that option. There’s rumors of starting a telecommuting pilot group soon, and I’d be interested in trying that out. I’m not sure how they’ll get around potential disclosure violations, but I’m sure they’ll figure something out.
Oh and AM is not allowed to play in my sandbox anymore. If you’re not gonna do a financial statement right don’t fucking do them. Had a poor hassled POA tonight that could have had her client’s case solved two phone calls ago.
burnspbesq
@Yutsano:
VPN and public-key encryption. APA and Competent Authority have been running a pilot program for secure email communication with taxpayer reps for the last 18 months. I’ve used it. Me likey.

When dog gives you wieners, make curly dogs.
Yutsano
@jeffreyw: ARF!!
@burnspbesq: I’m hoping our campus gets selected for the pilot. I’d volunteer to stay home one day a week just to try it out. I think I’d have to change my phone set-up (not hard) and Internet connections, but I’d gladly give it a go.

@Yutsano:
In terms of structure, yeah, very unpredictable melody, almost anarchistic in terms of songwriting, but the lyrics really hit home more than anything else.
As far as heir to the Beatles, I think, and don’t hit me for this, but Panic! at the Disco made a heroic case for themselves with 2008’s album “Pretty. Odd.”
It’s a latter day sonic heir to Sgt. Pepper, IMHO.
Yutsano
@freelancer: I can definitely see how you’d get that impression, although it’s also clear that there has been 40+ years of musical development along the way. Oh and Russian dolls FTW.
One question though: why is Ratzie doing a cameo in that video?
ETA: early appointment tomorrow, so gonna have to cut things short. If I can get out in the snow tomorrow. Living at the bottom of a hill with only one way out (up) can have disadvantages.

@asiangrrlMN:
I was glad to do so. Al used to post some of the best pic diaries over there until he was driven off by the Negatons there over a year ago. I really loved his pic diaries and every time I saw one I was impressed with his ability to put pictures into a beautiful story line. BlackWaterDog was driven off in much the same way, by the same people. The right pictures tell a story and some people have a real knack for selecting and arranging photos to do so, AR and BWD both have that talent.
Al’s story is about love and hope, something we are in short supply of right now.

@Yutsano:
Who’s Ratzie?! I didn’t see the Pope anywhere in that video.
Anyways, Panic isn’t just pop, they are for real.

Given that it’s about midnight where I am, I think it’s an ungodly hour back in the states. I’ma re-post the end of a comment from Edward G. Talbot I thought was interesting from the second E.D. Kain threadplosion from earlier.
“Which gets to #2. Libertarians by and large do not look at the set of facts the same way. What’s more, and I’m sure you would agree, many libertarians, such as many of the folks at Reason, criticize government far more the corporate power behind it. That seems backwards to many of us. There will never be any hope for getting government back on track until the more fundamental problem is corrected, yet most libertarians give that issue a fraction of the time. To me, they will always be unserious about actually solving problems as long as that persists. Doesn’t mean I can’t have a rational discussion, but the end point of such discussions will almost always be both sides saying, “Dude, you’re just wrong about what is needed.”
I think that gets at a lot of the problems/issues between the BJ community/left/progressive people and libertarians (at least the establishment ones, or the ones with the loudest voices). Could make for a very interesting post (or posts) if E.D. still has the stomach for BJ. Maybe he’s already written something about it; I’m not too familiar with his work at the other site. Just a thought.

It’s not ungodly, it’s 6:30.

Hi, guys.
Snowing [again] in Ohio. I cleared out a path to the street after work yesterday but now it needs doing again. Sigh.
Can’t do it now, though. Can’t afford to get physically tired before work.
It is pretty, though.
stuckinred
@Linda Featheringill: Florida is the only state in CONUS without snow!
Linda Featheringill
@stuckinred:
Wow!

@Linda Featheringill: A visual representation.

@CaseyL:
Partial answer to your perception a couple posts back about snow falling and air temp, at least for Seattle and near 32 degrees.
The possibly relevant paragraph starts with “Important:”.
And testing edit function:
Salem already at 42 degrees.

@SST
E.D. left a brief response in the comments but did not directly address that point. I was far from the only one making it, though perhaps I worded it differently.
I am pretty certain I know why a lot of “mainstream” libertarians don’t address this, though it’s often dangerous to assume motivations. It’s because they feel that government is almost all bad while business/corporations are mostly good. I’d say that’s bass ackwards, but there you are. I would also say they don’t believe that a primary role of government is to take care of those less fortunate (whether it’s their own “fault” or not). They instead believe that is the role of relatives or a church or some other mechanism where it happens via free will rather than govt.
On a higher level, it strikes me that these kind of discussions should usually end with fundamental disagreement based on something more than just evidence/facts. But it seems everyone has to win, a sentiment I am often guilty of as well. Whether it’s social programs or waterboarding or wiretapping or fighting terrorism or taxes, at its core some of these disagreements are not about things than be proven with logic, even though some of the higher level details can be weighed with facts and logic.

Wow, I didn’t expect to check B-J this morning and find a photo of Tigger. Thanks, Anne Laurie!
This is Tigger’s first winter and it’s been an unusually snowy one in the south. Our other cats despise the snow so we were surprised when he wanted out – actually wanted to stay out and and play in it. Photo credit to my lovely, bright, and talented 12 year old daughter whose pics always come out better than mine.
Carnacki
What a great cat.

Anyone wanting to work from home is not thinking clearly.
Someone from my group has the ability to work from home and she’s working ALL the time – 3 a.m. on a Sunday morning or 1 hour before she’s on an airplane for her vacation or when she’s stuck at home with a broken foot, and so on and so forth. She’s never off-line – especially since she’s one of the over-achievers and can’t let things go.
Someone else I know got dinged by his manager for not checking his e-mail and responding to a question at 10 p.m. at night.
Never get the ability to work from home because they WILL expect you to do that then.
asiangrrlMN
@Yutsano: Gee, where did you get that from? Yeah, it’s another good one by him. And, it’s fitting.
@Odie Hugh Manatee: That’s too bad (that he got run off). He did a wonderful job with that diary.
