@JPL: The nook is awesome as soon as you root it and just make it a generic android pad. No idea what you’d have to do to make the kindle worthwhile.

Well sorry, I’m violating your rule to beg John to ban that firebagging asshole WyldPirate.

I mean really, how long do we have to put up with his disgusting, vile, insane attacks?

I mean really, what will it take to ban him? Dennis’ post questioning the nature of anti-Obama rage on the left merits this?:

Damn, you really broke out the knee pads and lip balm out for this post , Mr Green.
Be sure to wipe off all that Obama spooge soaking your face before you go back for round two. We wouldn’t want anyone thinking you are Obama’s personal hose bag.

We are now into season #2 of “The Wire” on DVD. Enjoying it immensely although we need to read the episode synopsis on the HBO website after viewing since a lot of “insider” stuff doesn’t often come across in the dialogue. I had no idea that Dominic West is British. And Wendell Pierce is soooooooooooo good! I love his silky-smooth voice. The entire ensemble is brilliant.

@SiubhanDuinne: Saw it on Saturday and thought it was most excellent.

I’d like to give a Holiday unity shout out to America’s teachers, who are continually slandered by our leftist would be overlords. Regarding the recent PISA score releases MSNBC states:

‘Wake-up call’: U.S. students trail global leaders; Out of 34 countries assessed, U.S. ranked 14th in reading, 17th in science, 25th in math.

    Horse crap MSNBC.

    Educator-in-Chief Arne Duncan states:

“This is an absolute wake-up call for America. The results are extraordinarily challenging to us and we have to deal with the brutal truth. We have to get much more serious about investing in education.”

Blow yourself Arne, you stooge. If you think you can handle the Truth, read on.

When the government data is Logically filtered by a Heretic, certain Truths are revealed. We are able to view that American teachers in aggregate are second only to the teachers of one particular city (Shanghai) when it comes to educating Asian students (556 vs. 541; in contrast Japan scored 520); second only to Finland when it comes to educating White Students (536 vs. 525; in contrast Germany scored 497).

American teachers are unequaled when it comes to teaching Hispanics (466 vs Mexico’s 425) and blacks (441 vs we are not sure as metrics are never applied to African students in their home countries).

Well done American teachers. Enjoy your Christmas break, and your summer break, and your 2pm go-home time, and your generous pensions and health care plans. Feel free to tell Arne to pack sand.

Huh, I didn’t hear Marty Peretz was forced out a couple of weeks ago. New York Times Magazine has a long piece on him, which is probably more Marty than I could possibly care about. Here’s from a synopsis:

The bigotry charge was what lingered. “I mean, it hurts,” he said. We were in the dining room of the Loews Regency Hotel in midtown Manhattan, where the waiters greet him as “Dr. Peretz.” At a basic level, he said, he can’t be a bigot; he mentioned two close, personal black friends, one who is “so fucking smart,”

He’s also hired Muslims in the past.

You’ll never get to 500 comments with this kind of restriction.

NFL rant to follow: My San Diego Chargers have proven to be a classless organization. From an ownership that is more interested in profitting off a new stadium than winning, to a general manager more interested in winning battles of egos with agents than resolving player contract issues, to a coaching staff that refuses to hold players accountable, to players that can not wake up until they are well behind to teams they should easily beat, this has been an abysmal year.

Creepy. But I would look at them just to see if they are being sent by a relative. Sometimes that’s the case, they just want to let you know she’s gone, or it’s a spouse who hasn’t gotten their own account yet.

Once you’ve looked, then you can spam block it if the account has turned to spam.

I need absolution. That massive storm was supposed to go right through Cincinnati and went south at the last minute. The predictions for Christmas Eve went to near-apocalyptic up until Wednesday. I was buying grocery on Tuesday just to be sure I wouldn’t get caught in the mess. But on Wednesday, they kept dropping the estimates down to about a couple of inches, and I was partly disappointed, partly relieved. I feel guilty for being relieved the massive snow is going elsewhere.

It snowed over the weekend here in my beloved Chicago which caused me to break out my winter boots and deal with one of the more annoying parts of the winter – having to stop and tie my shoe laces on the boots every two blocks. Its seems to be something with the cheap “waterproof” coating on boot laces. Double knots? Triple Knots? Makes no difference

Is there some little life trick that I never learned here? Do people swap them out with normal sneaker laces? Use lace locks? Are there special 10 dollar laces I need to buy from REI? Inquiring minds

I disagree. The Spanos family wants to win the big one because that is the only way they’ll get people of this flat broke city to vote for their stadium. Personally I get a little thrill every time the Chargers fall on their faces because I know a little bit of Alex Spanos dies with every loss.

  56. 56
    KG says:

@danimal: you would think that owners of sports teams would have realized by now that if you win (and that’s a relative term for most teams) you’ll get whatever you want. The biggest indictment against the GM was the hiring of Norv Turner. 9 years as a head coach before coming to the Chargers and he had 3 winning seasons (his last year in Washington he was fired with a winning record, but I’m not counting that). What possibly makes someone think that’s a good choice for a team that was allegedly a championship contender?

Probably the one thing I love most about this blog is all the advertisements that come up. Every time a new one gets through my blocked-sites filter, I just find the URL it’s coming from and add that to my blocking list. B.J. gets all kinds of ads from obscure sites I’ve never heard of before. I saw two new ones just today.

Web surfing is just so much less stressful with all the ads blocked away.

  59. 59
    Ailuridae says:

    @KG:

Actually teams don’t even need to win. Just claim poverty (is is nearly impossible to lose money year to year in the NFL) and leak that you might be willing to relocate the franchise to LA.

The NFL salary cap has been for well over a decade less than the amount of revenue each team receives from the national television rights. There is like 3M dollars more in the check that comes from the league than the maximum the league let’s a team pay its players. Which means that even if you max out your salary cap you have a 3M dollar cushion before you factor in radio, ticket sales, concessions, merchandising, parking, local radio etc.

@licensed to kill time: I get emails for a stupid woman who has the same first and last names as I do. Her husband even has the same first name as my husband. I get all kinds of neat stuff, bank account info, car insurance info, social security numbers, confidential mental health info about her oldest kid, names, ages, birthdates of everyone in her family, job info, travel confirmation numbers and dates, multi-million dollar real estate deal details.

In the beginning, I patiently sent back responses to original senders trying to correct things, and to my email doppelganger as well (her email addy is one letter off). For about five years. Now, I’ve given up. I’m still working on a filter to get this crap directly to Junk, without taking the legit stuff with it.

@Tbogg-Well, Spanos is a freedom-loving, entrepeneurial job-creating rich man stuck in the soshalist NFL begging for public dollars from a cash-starved local government, so I am happy to see him unhappy in that regard. Are there a more despicable lot of hypocrites than NFL owners?

    Carol says:

@ChrisS: The Bills are threatening to move to LA? Los Angeles, the graveyard of football teams. Too good weather, too many other things to do with one’s time. In a way it’s like Vegas-even if gambling wasn’t an issue, how many people would leave other entertainment to go see a game?

It’s going from a place where it’s the top billing in town to a place that barely notices you are around. I mean, there’s a reason why the Los Angeles Raiders once again became the Oakland Raiders, why the Los Angeles Rams finally became the St. Louis Rams, and why no original franchise seems to be in the offing.

I think the shock of that kills teams. Unlike the Dodgers or the Lakers, where there are dozens of dates where one can attend a game, football requires a less casual approach to attendance and fandom. With only 7-8 or so home games, it’s not a matter of going inside on a bad day, or sitting outside in the sun on a sunny day in order to fill the time. It’s making a commitment on a particular date.

@licensed to kill time: Licensed, the exact same thing is happening to me pretty well daily.

I work at a university and one of my students passed away tragically in April of ’09. About three months ago, I started getting e-mails from this student I advised – it was actually an old e-mail they had sent me about four months before they died, just a routine e-mail asking about something mundane.

I’ve gotten them over and over and over since – but the weird thing is that while they no longer come to my work e-mail or my personal e-mail (to which much of my work e-mail is forwarded) they still come to my blackberry.

I surmise that the young man had his own school mail forwarded to his gmail account (both e-mail addresses are in the string) and somehow it’s gotten caught in a loop of some kind.

It was really creepy at first, but now I just delete them.

Note to the animationally enthused: Saw Tangled. Very good. I’d have put it as a real work of art worthy of Pixar if it weren’t a Disney Princess Movie and thus the basic themes have been worked over with tire irons for almost exactly 20 years now. I can understand exactly why it was made. Pixar wanted the Princess Movies to go out on a high note – show ’em how it should have been done, end the franchise. Rapunzel was vivacious, complicated, and interesting. The comic relief blended with the story without interrupting the flow. The actual story itself subtleties and twists I didn’t expect, and I thought things like Mother Gothel not having any magic were a nice touch. Maximus, The World’s Most Relentlessly Competent Horse, was great as both an antagonist and an ally.

Really, if they hadn’t already made 20 movies about a young fairy tale girl breaking away from her family and finding true love in a man she was forb-

Well, anyway. They went out on a high note.

Well LA or Toronto. Buffalo isn’t the megaopolis it once was (chortle, guffaw), but the current owner is 92 and the team is only hanging on in Buffalo and its chintzy stadium because of him.

NFL franchises are goldmines for the owners, especially, like was stated, if they can get a stadium built by the local tax base. I don’t expect the Bills will hang around in NY for much longer.

@Mnemosyne: And the college game is probably way cheaper than even the cheapest Pro seats needed in a major city like Los Angeles. I would guess even the cheapest season tickets would cost a lot of family yearly salaries by a multiple of 2, and regular tickets statospheric.

Pro Football thrives better in towns where it can at least occasionally take top billing-like DC, Buffalo, Houston, or even New York. The weather pretty much kills any other outdoor anything from time to time in these cities, and guarantees a pretty good tv audience on Sunday. I bet even in December there are plenty of things to do that don’t involve sitting around a radio or tv.

The city/taxpayers refusing to pay for building a stadium is doubtless an extra obstacle. It’s not as if LA has to worry about tourist downturn if the team threatens to move elsewhere, and there is a argument to be made: why is building a stadium more important than say expanding facilities for Hollywood? Hollywood brings in far more money, has deeper roots, and probably employs directly or indirectly far more people. So why build a stadium and not movie lots?

Also, if you did like The Passage (especially part 1 and you are not just into it for the vampires) I highly, highly recommend Justin Cronin’s two previous works: The Summer Guest and Mary and O’Neill. They are engrossing reads. Cronin definitely has the talent for creating characters that make you feel like you known them all your lives.

As far as “End of World” sagas, my faves, but I should say the separation between #1 and #4 is like .0001, they are all that good in their own way. And yes, The Passage does seem to be an amalgamation of #1-3, which is a good thing.

The death of the princess film at Disney has been greatly exaggerated. There was some panic on the corporate side when The Princess and the Frog flopped (relatively speaking), but I’m still convinced a huge part of the audience problem was that she was a black princess. The higher ups at the Animation Studio don’t want to kill all princess movies forever (Ed Catmull was misquoted) and Tangled has given them a leg to stand on with corporate.

Perhaps the real reason Democrats stopped unapologetically advocating for muscular government action to solve every problem – or at least why most of them did – is that the resulting policies didn’t always work. And how could they? There is no single approach to policy that comes out right every time. Liberals at their best see government performance as it is, not as ideologues wish it to be.

By the same token, conservatives these days tend to be ideologues, who see private industry as they wish it to be: never corrupt, always abiding by the rules. Somehow when a corporation profits, even by twisting the rules, it somehow benefits us all. Free market fairy dust I guess.

It will probably take another little while to get corporate to settle down from their freakout, but it will happen.

Have you seen the trailer for the new Winnie the Pooh? Go see it and keep my paycheck coming! ;-)

NOT technically Obots vs. Firebaggers, (aka “joining a machloches”), although a response to a comment here in that line.

NYT today reports on HHS efforts to find more eligible children for Medicaid. We have a factoid that 10% of children are currently uninsured as opposed to 23% of nonelderly adults. To me this supported that DADT was a bigger progressive achievement than sick kids. The achievements of the health care bill will be measured by how it treats that 23% of nonelderly adults. Also, sick kids are not demonized and their inability to join the military is not code for lack of full participation in civic life and the many benefits that the military can give an eligible person. A core progressive principle should be keeping people in instead of leaving people out.
(Now, in terms of pure ethics sick kids are better because you could save a life. No one is questioning that.)

    jeffreyw says:

@Ailuridae: Tie a simple square knot in the laces, use a bow to take up excess lace–with another square knot in the loops perhaps. It can be pulled pretty tight but usually loosens with a tug on one of the laces.

The reef knot or square knot is an ancient and simple binding knot used to secure a rope or line around an object. Although the reef knot is often seen used for tying two ropes together, it is not recommended for this purpose due to potential instability of the knot.

    [Via]
My emphasis-“potential instability” is how they say what it is about the knot that makes it so useful for tying shoe laces. Tug on the free end of one of the laces and the knot’s potential instability is made manifest. A simple overhand knot with the loops prevents the inadvertent pulling of one of the laces.

You know – that post you linked to was actually quite interesting, although I don’t know if it should be that much of a surprise that many of us in the rest of the world are sick of the behaviour of the United States.

The problem is that very few people here read it, because every single time you have posted on here previously you have behaved like a whiny, overbearing, entitled dickhead, which means people now ignore you. Maybe if you had made your points in a nice way, then people might actually have engaged with you and argued on the merits of your points.

Because apparently our adventures in Southeast Asia, South America, the Middle East, and the South Pacific over the past 150 years or so didn’t really count and it was only when the blackity black black man got into office that they started to resent being pushed around.

When you tie your laces, you probably tie the standard granny knot everyone was taught. It’s a crappy knot, but it’s easily fixed: when you do the first twist, instead of putting the left lace over the right put the right over the left instead. Then do the loop as you normally do. In other words, one of the twists should be left over right and the other should be right over left.
If you do tie a proper knot and your laces still come undone, then well, buy better laces.

But they do. Inferring from what I’ve been told (at my very small, cog in the corporate machine level, mind you), they want the Disney and Pixar studios to continue to have separate identities, and one of the ways to differentiate them is to keep the fairy tale/princess stories at Disney. It will probably take another little while to get corporate to settle down from their freakout, but it will happen.

    @Ailuridae:

I never saw the original quote, but it would baffle me if the Pixar folks now in charge wanted more Princess Movies. But in four or five years perspective may completely change.
In the meantime, they saved Princess And The Frog and Tangled and we have two decent movies, finally. I think you’re right about PatF. Racism is only a small (well, a very subtle) part of it. Disney Princess Movies sell a certain image, and ‘poor black girl’ is not in that image.
Shame. Good movie. After three decades of Eisner venting his bowels on the animation industry, Disney’s finally getting back up to speed.

    @Ailuridae:

I have to admit, it cracks me up that Kenneth apparently thinks that the rest of the world only just decided they don’t like American imperialism. Because apparently our adventures in Southeast Asia, South America, the Middle East, and the South Pacific over the past 150 years or so didn’t really count and it was only when the blackity black black man got into office that they started to resent being pushed around.

And what about the Ashes? What the fuck has happened to Australian cricket? Michael Hussey is the only batsman that has looked at all good in this series, and they almost left him off the side. Mitchell Johnson bowled well in Perth. Peter Siddle is bowling pretty well in Melbourne. That’s it. They need to burn this side to the ground and start over. Ponting’s tantrum yesterday was a cry for help.
