From the MSNBC website, “Toxic powder sent to Arizona congressman“:
White powder delivered in an swastika-covered envelope to the Tucson, Ariz., office of Rep. Raul Grijalva is a toxic substance, the Democratic congressman said the FBI told him Thursday afternoon…
__
An envelope arrived with swastikas drawn on the outside and a white powdery substance on the inside, Adam Sarvana, Grijalva’s spokesman, told the Arizona Daily Star newspaper.
__
It’s not the first time his office has been the target of threats, the Daily Star said. Grijalva received death threats in April, shortly after SB1070, the anti-illegal-immigrant law, was signed. He called for a boycott in response. He closed his Tucson and Yuma offices as a result of the threats, the Daily Star said.
__
In July, after he called off the boycott, staffers found a bullet and a shattered window inside his Yuma office, the Daily Star said.
__
Grijalva appeared on a national news talk show this week complaining about racist tactics being used during his campaign for re-election…

Rep. Grijalva is one of the candidates on Balloon Juice’s very own ActBlue page, just in case anyone can spare a few more dollars.

The Republican party and the teabaggers hate anyone not like them and this makes them a threat to their fellow citizens. A vote for a Republican or teabagger is a vote for hate, intolerance and death.
Don’t vote for hate, vote Democrat.
MeDrewNotYou
Grijalva doesn’t sound like a very American name to me! He’s just another illegal stealing the job of a hard working white man. Joe Arpaio ought to deport his ass and rightfully claim the seat as his own.

Like all Grijalva critics, they are jealous of his splendid mustache.

It’s rumored that Pancho Villa rose from the dead just to see it.

well when you live on the front lines of the
culture wars, these things will happen. Both
Grijalva (AZ CD-7) and Giffords (AZ CD-8) have
been threatened and their offices assaulted by
the baggerdom down here. The hate spewing
minutemen have a few enclaves down here and
do a fair amount of bullying through the
comments section of the local papers. The local
spin is that its “suspiciously convienent” for this
to have happened and that it is likely an “inside
job” to smear those patriotic god-fearing
teabaggers with the racist hate crimes tag us
“libruls” toss around so casually.
here’s a link to the local rag covering the story:

I said this in the last thread, but I’ll go ahead and say it again: this story has me seething. I’m in Phoenix now, but I went to college in Tucson, and I came to really admire Grijalva and his amazing work for that community during my time there. I’m really disappointed that shit like this is still happening, and the cowardice that this attack displays just makes me so goddamn angry.

@MeDrewNotYou:
The US has made real progress. Italians like Arpaio used to be considered not real Americans. I can’t wait until we have Filipinas or Hispanics in a position of power or influence who want to dump on Muslims.

” Mailing toxic powder is a terrible thing to do no matter who did it, but I doubt anybody at MSNBC will consider the possibility that just maybe somebody sent that package to discredit conservatives. Such a development would tend to “energize” the base. ”
And they’re all like that.

Your local spinners were formerly the Cult of Lute. Tells me everything I need to know.

@suzanne: In all seriousness, Grijalva is probably my favorite rep. I think he’s usually great on the issues, but more importantly than that, he’s the guy that takes a stand for progressives. I have so much admiration for him for calling for the boycott over SB1070, the political poison the act was. And, as others mentioned, dude’s got a hell of a ‘stache.

@monkeyboy:
Yes, it would be funny if it weren’t so tragic.
It wasn’t that long ago that having a last name ending in a vowel put both Arpaio and Grijalva into the same outsider category.
Koz
Well fortunately he might lose his reelection bid so he (and we) won’t have to worry about that any more.
KD
I think this proves that O’Reilly/Juan Williams/Limbaugh/Kilmeade were right. All terrorists are Muslim…wait, wha?
morzer
Just remember, kids, when the right-wing does this kind of thing it isn’t terrorism, but if a Muslim sneezes near you in the canteen…..

@Nutella:
My last name sounds Irish but I am of Scots-Irish patrilineal descent. One thing that often distinguishes SI from Irish is that SI use the old British convention for abbreviation where “Mac” is abbreviated as “Mc” [FWP – this is supposed to be “c” enclosed in “sup” tags] while Irish do not, and in the pre-2000 computer age, “Mc” [FWP ‘sup’] became “Mc”.
I got the impression that my ancestors were particular about marking that they were NOT the newly arrived Irish.
An interest thing is that there are a lot of professional black athletes with Irish or Scottish sounding last names and almost all of them use the SI spelling. What I’ve heard was that single SI explorers, trappers, homesteaders (lets just call them crazy mountain men) were hard up for women and when they could find wives they tended to prefer escaped female slaves because they were more robust – but then again they didn’t have much choice. In the South, plantations occupied much of the lowlands leaving the non industrial farmable highlands to the SI and Indians – and both groups welcomed and maybe competed for escapees.

Oh, and of course there’s nothing either violent or racist or dangerous about the teabaggers. Of course.
p.a.
They put a boxed toxic substance in the mail and then covered the box with swastikas? Is the purpose a warning shot, or are they just stupid? ‘Cause god knows, I can’t help myself when I get swastika-covered mail; I just gotta rip it open without gettin’ it checked out first.

@Isaakh: Of course. Because if you scratch a loud mouth or a bully you reveal a thick pile of chicken shit.
Bet you $50 that if they apprehend the idiot within the next few days we’ll be treated to the following:
1. Grijalva was an idiot for opening an envelope with Swastikas on it!
2. The Post Office shouldn’t have delivered an envelope with Swastikas on it, is this what we pay out tax dollars for!
3. It’s mighty suspicious that Grijalva’s office would accept an envelope with Swastikas on it!
4. Waaaah! We’re the real victims!
