Okay, urged by comments on another thread I’m watching the ongoing Chilean miner rescue on BBC. Can’t help but be in a good mood now. Amazing story.

The Gillian Welch version – “Orphan Girl”
Also, strangely appropriate for all the foreclosure talk tonight, a new fav of mine:
Mumford & Sons: Little Lion Man
Omnes Omnibus
@arguingwithsignposts: I have heard this on the radio a few times… I like it.
Moses2317
In response to Mark Kirk’s “jigger” comment today, I’d like to promote Jay-Z’s Vote Again PSA that was released today.
Winning Progressive
Daddy-O
I have no mother
I have no father
I have no sister
No brother
I am an orphan girl
Good night…

The Who Drowned
Mnemosyne
@arguingwithsignposts:
Oh, that’s what that song is called! They never seemed to say the title on the radio and it was driving me nuts.
I have a certain affection for those Shane MacGowanish whiskey-and-cigarettes singing voices.
arguingwithsignposts
@Mnemosyne:
Yes, me too. They’re from Scotland. And the whole album is worth the scratch to get.
Here’s another one from them: Roll Away Your Stone
asiangrrlMN
I saw my first Christmas commercial tonight, so the grumpy curmudgeon season has officially begun for me. And, yes, it’s different than the other seasons. Somehow.
Emo grrl is emo. (And yes, I’ve linked this before. Deal).
Omnes Omnibus
@asiangrrlMN: I prefer the original version. The acoustic is too emo for me.
Andy K
How about depressing music with upbeat lyrics?
Trio Out In The Streets
Okay, not such upbeat lyrics, but it still makes me smile…For who knows what reasons.
asiangrrlMN
@Omnes Omnibus: Emo grrl is emo! Plus, I can’t find an uncensored version of the original. But, this is a good version on Kimmel. Cleaned up. Sigh.
ETA: Fucking VEVO pulled the original video for copyright issues. Um, what the hell? I thought that was the reason they existed?
@Andy K: No. I want depressing music with depressing lyrics. I refuse to listen to anything else tonight.
Mnemosyne
If we’re posting Celtic-tinged cheery-sounding songs with angry lyrics, my pick is “Young Ned of the Hill” by the Pogues. I mean, how can you not love a song that curses Oliver Cromwell?
And my St. Patrick’s Day favorite, “Thousands Are Sailing”
Andy K
Joe Jackson It’s Different For Girl’s
IndyLib
The Kate Rusby song is wonderful, but hardly what I would consider musically upbeat. It’s sad and melancholy like all good Irish/Gaelic songs should be with the exception of the drinking songs.
My latest favorite is Colder Weather by Zac Brown Band.
MikeJ
@Andy K: Different for a girl’s what?
Hehe. Just noticed your url. Watching (the end of)Music Man right now.

The National’s “Bloodbuzz Ohio”

I’m actually in a good mood…watching the miners being rescued is filling me with happiness. And, oddly, making me slightly horny. TMI. Yeah. Whatever.
El Cid
4th of 33 trapped Chilean miners on the way up. It’s the single non-Chilean, Bolivian Carlos Mamani. Supposedly he will be taken home by Bolivian President Evo Morales, though I’m presuming it won’t be on the spot because they’re all taken after ascending (and a few minutes of greetings) to a field hospital for monitoring. Ojala it keeps on going this well.
asiangrrlMN
@suzanne: Life affirming. It’s natural. Go with it however you can!
@El Cid: Cool. Keep reporting as I have not the cable. But, I assume I can watch it online somewhere?
@Mnemosyne: You take that back about Hurt! Actually, I really like both versions for different reasons. Cash remade the song and owned it.
El Cid
@suzanne: Maybe it now seems easy to imagine it’s your hubbie being lifted out…
Mnemosyne
Last one before bed: to me, the William Shatner/Joe Jackson version of “Common People” works better than the original the same way that “Hurt” works better coming from Johnny Cash than Trent Reznor. There’s just something about having the world-weary (metaphorical) voice of experience deliver the song that makes it really come across.
You’re not world-weary in your 30s, you’re just emo. ;-)
suzanne
@asiangrrlMN: I think the shape of the rescue capsule has something to do with it.
@El Cid: Fortunately, he’s showered more recently.
Andy K
@MikeJ:
Still not sure after all of these years
and
It’s impossible to get too much of The Music Man, ain’t it?
After my grandfather died in the spring of ’62, one of my aunts dragged my then 7-year old Uncle John with her to the Muskegon Civic Theater’s auditions for TMM. Johnny got the part of Winthrop, and became a big star in Muskegon…And they recruited him to co-host the Miss Michigan pageant (held annually in the same Frauenthal Theater). Growing up, I thought Gary, Indiana was our family anthem.
MikeJ
@El Cid: I think she just likes hearing about the hot, long shaft.
El Cid
@MikeJ: This will inevitably lead to an absolute avalanche of puns and double entendres. I just want you all to realize.
asiangrrlMN
@suzanne: I’ll have to check it out! MSNBC.com, here I come! Um, pun wasn’t really intended.
@El Cid: BJ. It’s in the damn name of the blog. And, this is the late-night shift. I’m just sayin’.
MikeJ
@Andy K: I had no idea that Matthew Broderick was ever in a version, and there it was on Ovation tonight.
suzanne
@Mnemosyne: Shatner’s “Common People” always makes me laugh. And I completely agree with you about “Hurt”. I actually really don’t like NIN’s version; Trent Reznor just strikes me as another trust-fund revolutionary WATB. Another fabulous cover is Mike Ness’s version of Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice”. LOVE!
Andy K
@MikeJ:
Neither did I. I can’t picture it.
Mnemosyne
@suzanne:
We’re planning our Christmas party at work and one of the guys was working on a Hawaiian theme. He found a picture of this inflatable tiki pole and brought it to us as one of the decoration ideas.
Yeah. NO. Not presenting that picture to my boss, because I don’t know what would be worse: her seeing the same thing I do, or her not seeing the same thing while half of the room bursts into giggles.
asiangrrlMN
“The picture of him hugging his wife says everything.” And yet, you keep talking (I’m watching the rescue of the second miner). The announcers on MSNBC are really bugging the shit out of me.
@suzanne: Fighting words! I love me some Trent Reznor.
@Mnemosyne: Oh my god. Glowing pen is! Hahahahahahaha!
suzanne
@Mnemosyne: LMMFAO. I need to buy one of those. Hell, that could take care of most of my holiday shopping—is it wrong that I have many loved ones who I believe would appreciate that?
Mnemosyne
@asiangrrlMN:
Yeah, but c’mon — there’s a difference in the emotional impact between a 28-year-old singing, “Everyone I know goes away in the end” and a 68-year-old singing it.
Andy K
Oh, and btw, droid wars at Libertine Men and Scarlet Women today.
Yutsano
@asiangrrlMN: I’d been sitting on this card for awhile now, but I knew you’d give me a chance to play it hon.
suzanne
@asiangrrlMN: Apparently the first thing that second miner asked his wife was, “How’s the dog?” He’s obviously one of our kind.
El Cid
@Mnemosyne: This is actually the sign for Regal Theaters at the Mall of Georgia. If you look at it carefully, from top to bottom, there’s no way that’s not intentional. The very, very top is what makes it the most special.
hamletta
@IndyLib: Minor Key is minor.
asiangrrlMN
@Andy K: Your link broken. You fix!
@Mnemosyne: Definitely. The NIN version is pure emo and adolescent angst. JC took it to a whole different level and added complexity. The fact that he knew it was probably his last album only adds poignancy to the song. Like I said, he owned it.
@Yutsano: Emo grrl is pleased with your offering. You have done well, Yutsy.
asiangrrlMN
@suzanne: He’s the one the media talked to, apparently. Brought up souvenirs. Dealt with it much better than I would, but it’s partly the euphoria, I know.
@El Cid: Holy crap. Yeah, no way they couldn’t see THAT one coming.
Andy K
@asiangrrlMN:
Here.
Goddamned hyperlinking at C&L requires the full url now, so I’m thrown off when I do it elsewhere lately.
Mnemosyne
@asiangrrlMN:
And, to give Trent his due, Johnny couldn’t have sung it like that if it hadn’t been there in the song. To me, that’s one of the signs of a great song — different people can sing it and give it a totally different feeling than the original.
CaseyL
@asiangrrlMN:
They all are, but I do feel for them, a little: they’re covering a major news event, but one with the drama evenly spaced every 30 minutes (approx.) Being newscasters, they feel a need to keep talking. And talking. And talking…
They ran out of substantive things to say hours ago. They still have hours to go. They’re speculating on future movie deals, infighting, how much this will help the Chilean President politically and, when all else fails, they rerun tape of the guys who’ve already come up out of the mine.
I bet nearly every one of them, underneath the sheer joy of covering a rare story of real joy, is feeling the clammy terror of flop sweat.
Well. I’m heading off to bed. Hopefully, by the time I wake up tomorrow, everyone will be out of the mine and in better shape than expected.
Mnemosyne
@El Cid:
Hee! Yeah, definitely not a mistake. I think the tiki pole was, but it was still funny to see the puzzled look on the guy’s face when I said “NO!” so vehemently … and then the slow dawning of comprehension.
Yutsano
@asiangrrlMN: I am pleased, my mistress.
Now fess up: is this because you’re out of Cheerios and don’t feel like putting a shirt on to go to the store?
Mnemosyne
@suzanne:
Don’t forget, it’s almost 6 feet tall. It only looks dildo-sized in the picture.
asiangrrlMN
FYWP! I had over a minute left to edit my comment!
@Andy K: SNORT! Mr. and Mrs. Tea. Me likey! I would buy them (just so I could do nasty things to them).
I really like the unexpected “peccadilloes” in the 2.0 version (though I doubt Mr. Honky would actually know the word).
@CaseyL: Good point. However, one of the women just made a crack about weightloss (I bet some of those guys are in the best shape of their lives) that just made me wince. Night!
@Yutsano: What, me being pleased? Or me being emo? The former, no. The latter, no. What? I’m confused.
Andy K
@asiangrrlMN:
I’m sure that his p.r. people pounded peccadilloes persistently…
El Cid
@asiangrrlMN: Ba-DUMP-bump. Try the veal.
asiangrrlMN
@Andy K: Is that what the kids are calling it these days?
@Mnemosyne: Agreed. Kinda like JC’s take on Depeche Mode’s Personal Jesus. Another song he just owned.
@El Cid: And don’t forget to tip your server. You’ll be here all week, won’t you?
Yutsano
@asiangrrlMN: I’m trying to think of an answer that satisfies either condition. Maybe we should just let it go and think of FH #1’s candied peach tart. Or Kylie.
Mnemosyne
@asiangrrlMN:
Because nothing says “good health” like losing weight by being trapped in a small confined space with limited food. Maybe that will be the next weight loss craze — “We’ll put you in a mine shaft for three months, and if you don’t go insane from the darkness and confinement, you’ll look great when you come out!”
ETA: For full disclosure, I should probably mention again that I work for Weight Watchers 2 hours a week. But we don’t advocate living in a mineshaft as a safe, healthy way to lose weight.
Yutsano
@Andy K: ZOMG!! Is that a chinchilla in that wheel? I DECLARE SHENANIGANS!!
asiangrrlMN
@Yutsano: Isn’t that one and the same? (Peachy tart and Kylie. Yum!).
@Mnemosyne: Well, the other announcer was saying they were clean-shaven and had lost weight, estimated 17-20 pounds. That’s when the woman chirped in her line about some of them being in the best shape of their lives. I had such a negative visceral reaction to her quip.
ETA: I should hope not (on the WW mindset). I think Casey L’s logic came into play here. The announcers feel like they have to say something, anything, so whatever pops in their minds is a go. Unfortunately.
Mnemosyne
@asiangrrlMN:
That’s one of my pet peeves, though. Like when people tell cancer patients they look great because they’re so thin! Grrr.
Anyway, bedtime for me. Good night, night shift.
Andy K
@El Cid:
Oh, really, you two. Historically, many theaters have had phallic marquees. See? See?
You should bone up on your history before you going popping off the jokes. Sheesh!
asiangrrlMN
@Mnemosyne: Yup. Agreed. Night!
@Andy K: I gotta say, though neither of yours is as phallic and as, um, excited, shall we say, ready to burst, even as El Cid’s example.
@Andy K: Oh, I got it. I just decided to ignore your triple entendres to yank your chain, so to speak.
Andy K
@asiangrrlMN:
So did that go over your head or was it just that bad?
Andy K
@asiangrrlMN:
Damn, beaten again. I feel like taking my balls home and playing with myself.
asiangrrlMN
@Andy K: Aw, don’t be sore. I was hoping it would tickle your funny bone. I’ll stroke your ego if you need your head to be bigger.
Yutsano
@Andy K: Ahem. Washington Monument. Check and Mate.
Andy K
@Yutsano:
Not so fast, my friend.
Eagle Nebula FTW MOTHERFUCKER! one one
asiangrrlMN
@Yutsano:
@Andy K:
I have twelve penii! (Yes, the Washington Monument is one, but so is the London Gherkin).
I WINZ!
Andy K
@asiangrrlMN:
Numbers only count if you’re a slut. Mine shoot stars. Real stars. Slut.
Yutsano
@asiangrrlMN: Heh. I kinda sorta see the Space Needle being phallic and
i kinda don’t. But hey when a building inspires the architecture on The Jetsons something must be right. BTW did you know there was supposed to be more than one?
@Andy K:
You do realize that’s the trolley system in Seattle.
Andy K
@Yutsano:
I did not. CyberGF hadn’t informed me of that.
asiangrrlMN
@Andy K: Yours is all impressively sparkly (starbursts, anyone?), but look at the shapes! And, I take that as a compliment, thankyewverymuch.
@Yutsano: Did not know. Premature erection?
OK. This one is ribbed–for her pleasure.
NobodySpecial
@asiangrrlMN:
Death/The Velvet Teen.
Into Dust/Mazzy Star
I’d link you Black Moth Super Rainbow’s “Born On A Day The Sun Didn’t Rise”, but the video is even more disturbing than the song.
asiangrrlMN
@Yutsano: Shouldn’t that be trollop system if it’s transporting sluts?
@NobodySpecial: With a warning like that, I have to check it out.
Andy K
@asiangrrlMN:
Yeah. I figured. You’re k3wl. :D
Andy K
@NobodySpecial:
Rainy Day Flying On The Ground Is Wrong
Yutsano
@Andy K: South Lake Union Transit. Either someone had an awesome sense of humor or they were totally oblivious. They changed the official name, but of course it’s the S.L.U.T.
Oh yeah. Get to see the Space Needle blow up this New Year’s. Good times.
asiangrrlMN
@Andy K: Thanks. Twenty-five years after when it would have actually helped!
@Yutsano: That’s awesome. I love it. Take a pic for me (SLUTS, I mean. Not the Space Needle blowing. Though that would be cool, too. Why is it getting blown up?).
@NobodySpecial: Listening to the first song (Death). I’m really digging it. It’s very peaceful (the melody).
Yutsano
@asiangrrlMN: Fireworks display. It’s really pretty awesome, they do it twice a year, once for NYD and once on the Fourth.
And I’m outtie. AndyK I leave my wifey in your capable hands.
NobodySpecial
@Andy K: Nice! Very clean.
Neil was (and still can be) a pretty angsty guy.
NobodySpecial
@asiangrrlMN: For fuckedupness, I’ll note the co-writer of that song was diagnosed with brain cancer two years after that song was released.
Andy K
@Yutsano:
She lives right near one of the lakes…Lake Washington…I can’t think of the name of the neighborhood…
Andy K
@asiangrrlMN:
It’s never too late, sweetheart. You really are pretty fucking cool. You come across as the genuine article on the tubes. Just put your real self out there and I’m sure you’ll end up happy. :)
Andy K
@NobodySpecial:
You know that’s David Robach (Rain Parade, Opal, Mazzy Star) and Kendra Smith (Dream Syndicate, Opal), don’tchya?
asiangrrlMN
@NobodySpecial: Really really like the Mazzy Star. Everything goes better with cellos. And Alan Rickman. One out of two ain’t bad.
Are you talking about the Ouija board/cemetery vid for the last song? They did the Ouija wrong. But yeah. Disturbing. I actually don’t like the song that much, either.
@Yutsano: Night, hon. Nice hands in which you’ve left me!
@Andy K: Simple and aching. Me likey.
asiangrrlMN
@NobodySpecial: Aw. That makes me sad.
@Andy K: Thanks again. I’m working on it. I am much cooler now than I was as a teen.
@Andy K: Ooooh! Roooomance! You’re in Wisconsin? Or, do you just root for the Pack from afar?
P.S. I gotta say, I think the musical tastes of the late-night shift is the best, bar none.
P.P.S. I’m outie. Last one out, turn off the lights. Night, y’all.
NobodySpecial
Adding to the mood:
Katonah/Rufus Wainwright
@Andy K: Nope, but then again, my musical tastes tend toward blues and metal. And of course, I remember that song as the original Neil Young wrote way back in the Buffalo Springfield.
Night, all.
Anne Laurie
@El Cid:
__
The architecturally pure-minded would insist that particular marquee style refers back to the Art Deco craze for modernized “Pharonic” (classic Egyptian) ornamention… it’s a very very stylized version of King Tut’s sarcophagus, more or less, with that stylized bit at the top reflecting his famous folded-linen headdress. Of course, the original sarcophagi were designed to exaggerate the image of the potency of the pharoah as father of the twin kingdoms, so…
Andy K
@asiangrrlMN:
Michigan. Grand Rapids. Dad’s family came to the UP via Wisconsin, then moved down to the LP. Stayed loyal to the Packers.
And nobody was cool when they were a kid, no matter what you think. Except for my son’s little brother- but he’s only 8, and could lose his grasp on cool at any time.

While sitting around waiting to see if my cat comes in (I know I’m pathetic) I was reading reddit which is always, always the awesome when it comes to the comments. Best time waste since BJ.
Anyways, there was a great post by congressional candidate for Virginia’s 4th district. The campaign manager and the other guy associated with the campaign are hilarious (and honest) I thought you guys might appreciate it.

Anybody who uses “Update 2: Electric Boogaloo” should win!
Plus using something like Reddit to get your name out is a great way of reaching young voters and being funny and honest.

Uloborus
Am I the only goth here? I like Emilie Autumn’s ‘Shalott’ and… well, most of Evanescence, but particularly ‘Bring Me To Life’.
Comrade Javamanphil
@IndyLib: Kate Rusby is actually from Northern England. And she’s fabulous. Her cover of The Village Green Preservation Society is brilliant.
@Uloborus: I’m a bit old for being Goth at this point but I still pull out the Bauhaus from time to time.
Uloborus
@Comrade Javamanphil:
So’m I, but I likes me some elegant darkness.
IndyLib
@Comrade Javamanphil:
Actually I put Irish first simply because I couldn’t quite make out the accent, but I added the /Gaelic because I wasn’t sure. I still hold to the original premise though, for me all good Irish/Scottish/Celtic/Gaelic songs should be sad and melancholy unless it’s a foot-stomping drinking song with lots of fiddle. YMMV.
Comrade Javamanphil
@IndyLib: No worries. I agree with your assessment. Even when Kate is singing happy words she sounds sad which I love dearly. This song (and video) melt my cynical old heart every time and yet it is tinged with melancholy. (Forces me to put in some Joy Division to return to even keel.)
Step2
It may just be her angelic face, but I prefer Lisa Hannigan’s version of Personal Jesus over Cash’s.
Also, too.
The Weepies, World Spins Madly On
asiangrrlMN
@Cain: Did KitKat come home? I hope so.
@Andy K: There were definitely cool kids in high school. You know the ones to whom I am referring. But, it’s OK. I had to go through a lot of shit to get to cool. There really is no other way to do it.
