Howie Klein and John Amato are teaming up with folks, trying to raise enough loot to air an anti-Joe Miller ad in Alaska, and the place to donate is here. I’m a little late to the party, but here is the ad they want to try to run:
You can see Howie’s thoughts here.

I would help out, but Harry Reid used his voodoo mind control powers to make all the Republicans filibuster the DADT repeal, so Sullivan tells me that I want to elect more batshit crazy Republican gay-haters like Miller. Makes sense to me.
Joseph Nobles
That ad makes me sympathetic to Miller, and I agree the guy’s a fruitloop.
Loneoak
Americans for America is a great PAC name.

I get what they’re getting at but it’s too cartoonish. It distracts too much from the point that he radically wants to destroy medicare and social security.
Needs to be toned down to be more effective.
Violet
@Joseph Nobles:
Agree. Miller is crazy, but the ad seems so over the top it doesn’t work for me. The ad as it is seems very “shock jock.”
Alaska takes tons of money from the Federal Government. They’d be better off saying things like, “Do you like X? We get that with Federal dollars. Miller wants to take it away.” or “Are you unemployed? Miller would make sure you couldn’t get any unemployment benefits.” Be specific about how he would hurt Alaskans.
fourlegsgood
I dunno, I like it.

@Violet:
The entire state is one big welfare baby sucking on Uncle Sam’s taxpayer teat. And the mean little shit kick’s Uncle Sam in the nuts every step of the way. I say we make the entire state a wildlife refuge with a migratory wingnut section.
Carol
Any body vet this in front of actual Alaskans? I would want some feedback to make sure this ad doesn’t backfire.
Right now, Scott looks like the only sane one in the race. The other two are over the top-Miller generally and Lisa will probably have a meltdown before her write-in campaign is over. Not being on the ballot means that she has to hope there is more than token support for her personally as opposed to relying on party stalwarts for at least some votes. So its a nail-biter on election day, hoping that enough voters remember to write her name in on a day that’s already stressful enough.

It might be more important to get ads out there, regardless of the aesthetic merits.
Although yes, I have seen better ones.
Carol
@Linda Featheringill: I’m not worried about aesthetics, but message. Does this sit well with some Alaksans? Does the message resonate and not conflict with what McAdams wants to do?
Violet
@Carol:
I agree.
Linda Featheringill
@Carol:
How will it sit with the residents of Alaska? I don’t know.
I used to know some folks in Alaska but that isn’t the case now. I have no one to get feedback from.
Does anybody know some people in Alaska? Maybe we can send them the ad and see what they think.
Steeplejack
I sent this to my friend who lives in Fairbanks and will report back on her response (if any).
She has previously e-mailed me (in the negative) about Joe Miller and actually went to a “meet and greet” for McAdams, although she laughs about the fact that he was chosen somewhat casually when it looked like Murkowski was a shoo-in.
TruthOrScare
I guess I’m not clear on what the ad is asking the voter to do. It’s obviously anti-Miller but it never mentions McAdams as the better alternative. With Murkowski’s write-in campaign, it could just as easily be perceived as an ad for her campaign. Unless I’m missing something (and feel free to correct me) I’m not inclined to fund anything that isn’t clearly promoting the Dem. If by some fluke Murkowski wins, I expect her to go right back to caucusing with the GOP and wouldn’t want to think I helped to pay for that.
Irony Abounds
To be blunt, I think it stinks and reeks of amateurism. I’ll put my money with McAdams directly, although I’m afraid Alaska will be like Florida, where the Dem becomes the forgotten third place guy and any chance he had of winning went away when Murkowski jumped in.

[Deleted because FYWP, that’s why.]

@Steeplejack:
Heard back from my friend in Alaska about the Joe Miller ad:
(Note: My friend is a 70-year-old woman who works full time as a psychologist. She moved to Alaska about 12 years ago.)
Katie
I live in Fairbanks. I don’t like Joe Miller one bit (he’s a nutcase), but I don’t like the ad either. I was ready to support McAdams, but now I’m planning on writing in Lisa. The noisy people seems to like Miller, but the vast majority of people that I’ve talked to can’t stand him.
Snarky McSnarksnark
That ad is beyond awful: it preaches to the converted, and pisses off everybody remaining. It’s trivial and self-satisfied, and I think it will be very effective at helping Miller get elected.
Hippie Killer
That ad is terrible. I mean really. Let’s show how crazy and stupid candidate B is by making a crazy and stupid ad. FAIL.
Zuzu's Petals
I think it’s about right as a YouTube ad, but I threw in $10 anyway.
Zuzu's Petals
@Steeplejack:
He didn’t turn down over $14,000 in federal subsidies for his Kansas farmland, either. He just doesn’t talk about it.
DPirate
Well, everybody else running for office sucks pretty badly, too. Running an attack ad won’t convince me why I should vote for your shitty candidate instead of this shitty candidate.
lol
@Violet:
This.
Go down the check list of popular government programs and quote Miller wanting to end them. Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Unemployment, etc.
If you want to be sneaky, put it a couple popular bits from HCR. “Miller thinks insurance companies should be able to deny you health care because of pre-conditions”.
His nutty persona is a distraction – focus on what he believes – that’s toxic enough and it has the benefit of being something people actually care about.
