Packing, bleah. Right now, I’m living in what can best be described as an agglomeration of cardboard boxes inside what used to be a functional apartment. Moving day is Monday. Assuming I make it that far without accidentally stabbing myself with a boxcutter or something.

The last combat troops have left Iraq, beating President Obama’s withdraw deadline by two weeks.
The Naderites/FBaggers were right – OBama is just like Bush.
[Note to Management: Guys, this really deserves it’s own thread.]

A nice little pick me up.

Well, everyone told Cole not to eat those 50 habanero peppers. Hope he feels better soon.

Been feeling rundown myself. Am getting ready to watch disc two or The War by Ken Burns. That guy is a national treasure for documentaries.

What’s up with the price of pine nuts? So much basil, so little money for pine nuts.

Where are those peaches from, jeffreyw?

@jeffreyw: thanks for the link to the recipe for peach dump cake.
But it is too easy for me to understand.
“Layer ingredients in a lightly oiled 13 X 9 dish, in order starting with the peaches.”
How many layers?
“Bake for about 40 minutes.”
I don’t see the temp.
I’m going to have to try to make this.

Update:
TO ALL,
When my cousin last went back to Iraq, we were under the impression that he wasn’t gonna be home until Thanksgiving!!
But I just talked to my aunt, and she said that he will be home in 2 WEEKS!!!! That’s how long it’s gonna be for “everything to be in order”. So I may have in fact been watching him in one of the vehicles driving over the border into Kuwait.
Like I said, now we just gotta see if he “re-ups” for Afghanistan. Ya’ll better believe that I’m gonna be on him “like white on rice” to make sure he makes an informed decision.
Looks like I’m gonna be booking a trip to NOLA soon…!

@beltane:
Apparently the pine nut crop in China was really small, driving up prices. Possibly some flavor/taste problems with the Chinese pine nuts as well, thus making them undesirable and driving up prices of pine nuts not from China.

::doubtfully:: Well, they *look* okay . . . .
Anyhow, as an adopted Georgian, I was glad to see that you properly capitalized “Vidalia.”
Have you ever eaten a baked Vidalia onion? Chomp it down the way you would a baked potato or baked apple.
Have you ever visited the fairly small bit of GA real estate that is allowed to grow what are allowed to be called “Vidalia onions”? It’s quite an interesting trip.
MikeJ
@stuckinred: Of course it’s an Obama communication issue. They’re doing exactly what he said they would. He’s got to whine about something.
lamh32
Wow, I actually posted the same thing twice in one comment.
Sorry ’bout that guys, I guess I was too excited. I’m got to learn to temper my enthusiasm, cause other may have lesser stories.
stuckinred
@MikeJ: Hey dog, I have no beef with you but they had officials telling them that this was it and now the WH is contradicting it.
Mike Kay
@stuckinred:
What’s he whining about?
JMY
What is this hoopla between the WH and MSNBC?
MikeJ
@stuckinred: That this was what? Everybody has said for months, if not years, that there would be 50k left. It’s not Obama’s fault if the media are fuckwits.
stuckinred
@Mike Kay: I don’t see it as whining. They have been on for three hours doing “breaking news” covering this like a blanket. Fineman just said there are 5000 combat troops there still. Maybe I’m being to cynical but this is the kind of shit that makes the administration look like they couldn’t hit their ass with either hand. I’ll be back at 5:30 to see how it breaks over night.
jeffreyw
@jl: Mrs J made it from a recipe TaMara linked to. I think the temp we used was 350, always a good choice for general baking. Cut a bunch of peaches up and line the bottom of a 13X9 pan, add 1/3 cup of sweetened water or use canned peaches including the syrup. Sprinkle on the cake mix right out of the box, dot with a stick of butter cut into 16 slices, sprinkle on the brown sugar, Mrs J used ~3/4 cup, then chop 3/4 cup of nuts and sprinkle them on. Pop it into the oven, watch it, the top will turn brown and it’ll get bubbly. There is some leeway, you don’t need to look for 30 minutes, then check every 5 or so
stuckinred
ask JeffW, he knows how this shit rolls!
MikeJ
@stuckinred: The troops aren’t supposed to be out until the 31st. There’s nothing to complain about. The military doesn’t exist to give General Electric good pictures to put on TV.
lamh32
@stuckinred:
Okay, now I’m confused. What is the complaint from MSNBC? And if it’s something about numbers, why then is the same numbers being used over at CNN, and CNN is not turning it into a WH communications kerfluffle.
sometimes I really think we shoot ourselves in the foot more than we shoot at others. That whole bit with Chuck Todd was just stupid.
first of all, the Todd said the WH ain’t making any statements, so why then did MSNBC call for Todd’s input??? Just to cover the “confusion”?
Seriously, what is the issue?
Mike Kay
@stuckinred: it’s still two weeks before the deadline. As they said over and over, this movement was made on a surprise basis, so not the entire plan was revealed. if there’s 5000 left, that isn’t significant when you compare it to the 100,000 that have left.
beltane
@Violet: @Comrade Mary: Thanks. I was thinking that blanched almonds might be a good substitute.
Trix at GOS just posted that Howard Dean represents the Democratic wing of the Tea Party. That made me laugh for some reason.
lamh32
now this is the coverage that MSNBC should stick to. leave it for tomorrow to start the confused WH meme.
Richard Engel and Rachel are talking to actual troops.
Leave the talking point dujour for Morning Joke and his buddies tomorrow.

@stuckinred:
CNN is reporting 56,000, which includes the 50,000 figure that MSNBC quoted, and about 1000 other “logistical” figures.
So if that’s the issue, then yeah, the Chuck Todd/Keith O segment was much ado about nothing.
WaterGirl
@jeffreyw: It looks gorgeous, but why did you call it a peach “dump” cake?
Edit: I think i will make this for company this weekend with my fresh farmer’s market peaches, but… coconut? Seems kind of like “one of these things is not like the others” – maybe I should leave that out?
jl
@jeffreyw:
Thanks!
Don’t need to give advice on checking, though. My patented technique for dishes like this is to check very carefully, and probably cool off a tiny piece and nibble every five minutes, just to make very very sure it is all going OK and it is progressing perfectly in every possible way.
As it gets towards being done, very frequent checking and nibbling are an extremely important piece of my baking toolkit.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@lamh32:
I think everything involving Chuck Todd is necessarily stupid. He gets to sound sharp and sophisticated by suggesting the WH isn’t playing it straight, KO gets to put on his imaginary Murrow cap, and in the end, the WH is blamed for “sending a mixed message”. Except for Rachel, I can’t think of a single evening MSNBC anchor who is qualified to lead a story this important.
Mike Kay
@beltane: Seriously, what’s Dean screaming about? (pun intended)
jeffreyw
@SiubhanDuinne: Peaches have been grown hereabouts for ages, I picked peaches summers as a lad. Not as many big growers here now as there used to be, still lots of peaches and apples grown here. More and more I’m seeing grapes growing, some vineyards close to me.
Yup, Vidalia is an actual place, and nope, haven’t eaten an onion like an apple either baked or raw. Mmm…they make a killer french onion soup.
Last time I was in Georgia I was in the army, learnin how to be a grunt. That was in ’69 iirc. Pretty sure we were no where close to anywhere nice. Fort Gordon was the name of the place.
Zuzu's Petals
Okay, here’s my question.
A couple of days ago, Ed Rollins said Obama’s comments about the mosque were “probably the dumbest thing that any president has said or candidate has said since Michael Dukakis said it was okay to burn the flag. And it was very similar.”
I remember the ’88 election very well. I remember Bush I got all smarmy about Dukakis and the Mass. flag salute question. I remember some wingnut suggested Kitty Dukakis had burned a flag back in the day, and he was laughed off the stage.
But nothing about Dukakis saying it was okay to burn flags. Nothing on Google either.
So anybody know what the deal is?
jeffreyw
@WaterGirl: It’s called a dump cake because that is the essence of the recipe: dump in the ingredients and go.
jeffreyw
@WaterGirl: Mrs J left out the coconut.

In a way I’m not sorry people are bitching about the 50000 or whatever it is. I think Obama is doing a good thing here but let’s not ignore the thousands of what? Non combat troops still there til when?

If The Moar You Know is reading tonight, I left a message at the end if the comments in John’s post about visiting the shelter. I’d love to talk to you about possibly adopting your cat (your message about having to give up your old kitty broke my heart).
And if he isn’t here tonight, I would greatly appreciate it if the BJ communitariate could give him a heads up about my message as soon as he pops up in a thread.
Thanks!

I think MSNBC is wondering why the WH isn’t breaking out the foam finger, and my suspicion is that the WH’s attitude is that you don’t celebrate the end of a travesty. But it seems like MSNBC is mostly just stroking their own bone here: “WH didn’t prepare a response to this because they didn’t realize we were the shit and could broadcast this live – fuck them underestimating our awesomeness.”
Zuzu's Petals
@Mike Kay:
Yeah, I was going to say “Aside from the he’s a lying hack part” but thought it might be too obvious.
I saw Poppy and Barb at a campaign stop on the state capitol steps here in California. Flags as far as the eye could see. Speech was pure blather, but at the end he and Barb stood up, put their hands over their hearts in a dramatic sweeping gesture, and led the flag salute. It was at that moment I realized in what utter contempt they held the voters.
lamh32
@Little Boots:
ah, but the bitching isn’t really about the soldiers at all. The fact that the 56,000 are actual individuals is not what the meme will be about. If it was, then that would be different. the whole segment between Keith O and Chuck Todd was seemed to be geared more to the “WH communications messaging problem” that is the meme of the day
ya know it’s a meme, because jack cafferty on cnn had a whole question on whether or not the Obama admin or the Bush admin was better at messagaing.
I’m not really listening to keith or chuck or Tweety, cause I already know what’s what with them. I’m listening to Richard Engel, and Rachel’s coverage, not tweety and keith’s enlightened “commentary”
SiubhanDuinne
@jeffreyw #44: I was just funnin ya. A little bit of peachauvinism. (I’m from Illinois myself, and I know there are good peaches to be found downstate.)
Know Fort Gordon too. Right outside Augusta.
AFAIK, Vidalias are the only onions you can eat (willingly, cheerfully) raw like an apple. They are an amazing flavour and texture. Several years ago the state (GA) Agriculture Commissioner took a lot of growers, distributors, grocery stores and restaurants to court for improperly claiming their onions were Vidalias, when they weren’t. I think the legislature also passed various laws defining what is and is not a Vidalia onion.
If you’ve gotta have Big Government ramming things down your throat, those rammed things might as well be tasty sweet Vidalias.
WaterGirl
@jeffreyw: Well, if Mrs. J left out the coconut, I definitely will, too! (thanks for the definition of dump cake)

@SadieSue: That’s very sweet of you. You could email one of the front pagers with the offer (Anne Laurie would be my pick). They have all our email addresses, anyway. They could give yours to Moar or just let him know. I think it’s awesome you’re considering adopting his cat.
I just had lunch and am now going to take a nap. See y’all on the nightshift (or not).

I had no idea what the fuck Olbermann and Todd were implying. Everyone knows that there are supposed to be 50K remaining when it is no longer “combat.” Basically it sounded to me like DoD was saying, “Technically this is the last ‘intact brigade,’ but there are still two weeks remaining during which we’ll go from 56K to 50K.” DoD is wanting to be extra precise.
Olbermann seemed to be fishing around to find something to bitch about, Todd tried to fend him off, and then Todd caved by saying something weird about how the administration probably didn’t realize that they had super-cool technology to broadcast it, even though the military has had people happily talking about the whole shebang all night.
I told my wife that it was just like reading certain blogs where somebody comes up with some stupid word-parsing complaint, and then there’s just a sudden crazy dogpile where everyone thinks it’s the worst fuckup ever in the history of up-fucking, like HuffPo or Aravosis. Since she doesn’t share my blog obsessions, she made a noncommittal supportive noise and I stopped talking about it.

G makes his dump cake with a mixture of canned pineapple and cherries in juice with yellow cake and butter sliced on top. I’ve mixed it up with other fruits and cakes, but that faux upside-down cake is the classic.
For some reason, people at his office have become convinced that I’m the one who makes the cakes even though he’s been bringing them to that same office since before the two of us even met 10 years ago. But apparently exchanging wedding rings was supposed to make me take on all baking duties or something.
(We split the kitchen duties — I cook, he bakes. It works out nicely. I think I’m getting him this book for Christmas.)
Mnemosyne
@Little Boots:
End of 2011. Yes, I know we’ll have people bitching that we don’t really know if they’re going to leave on schedule, but the fact that the first 100,000 have left on schedule (many of them even ahead of schedule) would seem to indicate that the schedule is something that’s being taken seriously.
Yutsano
@Mnemosyne: These sound rather close to a clafoutis, which is basically a French cross between a cake and a pudding. Really nummy stuff though.
Mnemosyne
@Yutsano:
It actually bakes up more like a cobbler or crumble, at least the way G makes it. You serve it with a spoon. And ice cream. :-)

@demo woman: Most definitely. But it was amazing to see the dumb complaint arising on the fly.

@FlipYrWhig: Secret to a happy marriage? You could write a relationship book.

Anne Laurie
@beltane:
Pistachios work pretty well as a substitute, to my undiscerning palate. I’ve been told walnuts are good, too.
Yutsano
@Anne Laurie: Walnuts are not considered truly authentic if you’re looking to replicate an actual pesto genovese. But that’s boring, plus the flavor with walnuts (kicked up a little with a small shot of walnut oil) is nothing short of amazing. I’ve done both and could argue that they are both equally delicious, although walnuts are even better if you incorporate spinach in the pesto as well.
James F. Elliott
Don’t do it! Season one is TERRIBLE. Just enjoy season two; it’s better in many respects, but also worse. I think the problem with season one is that those writers had better long-term plot plans for the characters but were actually bad at writing. The new crop are really good at writing fluff cop pr0n. The characters are more derivative and less interesting, but they are way better written and performed this season.
Also, Tricia Helfer is not in season one. So, really, what was the point?
