Dave has an interesting article in today’s WaPo about myths of the Tea Partier’s. He contradicts the conventional “wisdom” of most of the regulars on this blog.
What is your take on Peak Oil? This is one of the problems ahead of us that will require the brains of EVERYBODY and I’d like to know how it looks from your standpoint

We still have 3 months to go, so where the economic reality is then is anyone’s guess. Quite frankly, most people don’t give a damn about statistical reports such as these. They give a damn about whether they can feed their family, whether their family can feed their families, and whether their neighbor can feed their own families… in that order. So, they hear news about the report and think either “No shit!” or “It doesn’t affect me.” Sadly, without a straight cash infusion (or forcing institutions that received TARP funds to stop interest charges for a year) to middle- and lower-class families, i.e., those who will use it as liquidity, or as a means to pay down some debt to create some liquidity, and thus spend it as an economic stimulus, the politics do not look good for the Dems come November.
So, of course, with full knowledge that relief for the lower- and middle-class families will actually help people across the widest swathe of the American electorate, the GOP has no choice but to shout, “Tax cuts for the rich, bitches!”
Didn’t you hear? The Tea Baggers got just about wiped out last Tuesday. It’s a trend. They are headed for the dustbin of hysterical also rans.

I’ve been avoiding thinking about Republicans taking the House. Seeing the words “Speaker Boehner” here just jolted me to the core and a wave of actual nausea washed over me.
Pancake is a badly executed parody. It’s really not that easy to write those things, and this one makes a couple of rookie mistakes.
Seriously?
I guess Pancake might be a parody troll. But usually parody trolls try to inject some subtle humor into their attempts. Pancake just seems to like being confrontational, calling people names and provoking angry responses. (Which works around here because, well, this can be a pissy group of people sometimes, and the buttons aren’t that hard to push.)
I just figured Pancake was a generic troll – maybe he/she believes the things he/she posts, maybe he/she doesn’t. Doesn’t matter. The purpose is to provoke an angry reaction, not to make people think or make people laugh (the usual purposes of the “parody troll”).

Anybody’s guess? Sure, but it’s not like it’s a difficult guess to make. Ask me about the Knicks’ chances of winning the NBA next year.
But of course there’s no indication that the Republicans would have an interest in the economy doing badly.
Dave has an interesting article in today’s WaPo about myths of the Tea Partier’s. He contradicts the conventional “wisdom” of most of the regulars on this blog.
Not much of an article. It was mostly based on his own opinions without any evidence to support it.
However there was one quote that I have wondered about myself:
If you think the tea party would have risen up to oppose a Republican president who spent like mad and violated conservative principles, then where was it in the Bush years?
In other words, these tea baggers could care less about deficits or high taxes. They just can’t stand the the fact that they are out power, especially to an African-American President.
I met a tea bagger who I discussed politics with. He refused to agree that we needed to cut defense spending to balance our budget. No, if anything he wanted to increase it so we are ready to attack Iran. He was all about getting rid of Social Security/Medicare/Unemployment benefits.
In other words, the tea baggers don’t mind big government. As long as THEIR spending makes up our big government. They are no different than liberals, if you will.

@Frank: Their just old white people who need someone to blame. They want their country back, the country Ronald Reagan promised them. I’m not sure how somebody steals something that never existed, but apparently they did, and somebody has to pay. Sorry, but that’s the way the founders wanted it.

@shortstop: No parody would name himself after a peace activist killed by the Israeli Army. Only a huge asshole who needs to DIAF with Matt Drudge would do that.
Fuck off, Weigel. The jobs report may be grim, but I don’t see Boehner or anyone else on that side of the aisle offering anything other than more tax cuts for the rich and trying to kill unemployment benefits.

1. Fuck Weigel.
2. Hey Pancake — go play in the dirt behind a beeping Caterpillar.
As much as I supported him during his b.s. forced resignation from WaPo, I don’t really think Weigel does himself any favors on Twitter. He comes across as part of the journalistic bubble as much as the rest.
I am with Eemom. Fuck him, what chance does any Dem stand with a media so tepid to point out the obvious GOP obstruction throughout this recovery?
Hey there – we were relocated to MI (but I am keeping the Ksmiami) and it has been a great chance to expand my social circle… Anyway I have a lot more friends now that are solidly middle class and I think one of the problems is that there are plenty of helpful programs for the poor, TONS of extras if you are wealthy, but if you are middle class – you are SOL in America today and that has to be fixed. The Democrats need to just come out and say that if you are making less than125,000 per couple, you pay no federal taxes for 2010 except for SS. Then you unveil a raft of programs aimed at bolstering financial security and education for the Middle.
Then you elect more Democrats.

@ksmiami:
A curious idea that may or may not be remotely practical is really not going to get much froth when we have an obvious troll to spew our vinegar at.
To be honest, he’s kind of dull. Eh.@
LGRooney:
Apparently high unemployment is not nearly as big a voting indicator as increasing unemployment. If things are steady or improving, people are a lot less angry, even if the totals are painfully high. I wish I knew where that statistical analysis was so I could cite it. It makes me cling to hope.
Well, actually I cling to hope because of Tea Party candidates. Their heartfelt efforts to turn certain Republican victories into close races have already been much appreciated as the estimates of Republican seat pickups dips steadily downwards.

BJ deserves a higher class of parody troll. I thought us libs were the funny ones.
@Pancake: I like Weigel, but he got a few things wrong in that column. This is just plain incorrect:
The tea party is unlikely to even reach third-party status, because the vast majority of its members — up to 79 percent, in some polls — identify as Republicans and are savvy enough not to take actions that would help Democrats.
What about Doug Hoffman? And Sharron Angle is screwing up what should have been a sure GOP win over Reid. As far as the third-party thing goes, we’ll see in 2012. I wouldn’t rule out a prez candidate on a Tea Party ticket and wouldn’t be surprised if that candidate’s last name is Palin.
I say (to the admin or any Democrat) go bold and let the chips fall as they may. Surprisingly, more people than I thought are aware that the Repubs have no ideas as to fix the economy… It will take creativity and policies aimed at full employment…. In the end, America will be a better place with fewer billionaires, a bigger and safer middle class and a higher savings rate. The game has been rigged for a long time and we may be arriving at a place where people see that.
suffer the poor bankers on wall street…

It’s more like Weigel went full metal kissass in order to maintain his dc contacts. Given that his appeal as a journolist is his list of contacts, I can see why this is a rational response. The REAL problem is the management, the people that don’t produce content, but rather decide what content is worthy.
It explains why draft dodging stalinesque “shoot them in the face and they apologize to me” Cheney is revered in that town.
They have no compunctions against fucking anyone who gets in their way.
And I agree with the three of you. I am so tired of hearing how the Democrats are going to lose big in November without a proper, legitimate counter argument as to what the Republicans have done this session to warrant folks voting for them.
And apparently the dipshit who’s running against my congressman, Gary Peters (MI-9), is a birther.
Longer Unemployment Report: why the fuck would we vote for a Republican Party that, outside of Eisenhower, has a hideous track record of job growth and wage protections?
