Of course, flaming Obama probably is good for poutrage fundraising.

I disagree with Maddow — not about the history, but about the substance. There’s a long history of this kind of propaganda, and it is always used to justify a mass murder. We’re seeing the beginnings of that: people going out to attack the ACLU and the Tides Foundation, a frequent topic of rants on Beck’s show.
I wish Maddow had reminded her viewers of the radio shows in Burundi, or in Serbia, or in other places where large genocides took place. This is what the right-wing thugs do when they can’t win legitimately — they create an “enemy”, and they dehumanize that enemy, and they, eventually, kill that enemy.
El Tiburon
Misery of trolling around on an IPad: can’t watch most videos especially if they are Flash. So assuming it is Rachel meadow?
KG
I spend a lot of time in Long Beach, I have met more than a few women that make me wish I was a lesbian.
BR
@demimondian:
Maddow was just saying that it’s a political tactic, which it is. When they aren’t getting the results they want with the political tactic, their avid crazies take it to a whole new level.
BR
It’s too bad that this eclipsed two important things that happened today:
1. Obama signed the Wall Street reform bill.
2. The Senate passed the unemployment extension.
Violet
@El Tiburon:
Somehow I read that as “Rachel Meow.” Lolz.
BR
You know, I have to give Michael Moore a lot of credit, for something most folks probably forgot, but it’s on the topic Maddow covered tonight.
In Bowling for Columbine, he spent probably a good 30 minutes of the film discussing how the media systematically creates a black bogeyman that America should be afraid of.
I wish I had a clip of that.
Hunter Gathers
@BR:
You think it was mere coincidence? I think not. The timing was deliberate. The target was never Sherrod, or the NAACP or the WH, or any of the others who got caught up in this. It was all about hijacking the MSM for a few days, to drown out any good news, to get the public focused on bullshit. Breitbart is a professional race baiter, and pros of his caliber always get the job done. Always.
Brian J
Sherrod’s a lesbian?

Her 3rd segment tonight deserves a Peabody. I hope Steve Doocy falls asleep tonight cradling a pistol, lips wrapped around the barrel, and wakes up in the morning weeping like a scorned schoolgirl.

@Hunter Gathers: Ding.

I’m not a historian (I don’t even play one on TV!) but this seems to be what plays to authoritan types. Find an under-represented minority and demonize them. Same song, different dance, as the kids say.

I think it was both.

I’m not a big fan of the “I question the timing” trope. When is it not a good time for the right wing to fling feces?

@El Tiburon:
I posted a YouTube clip of the first segment here.

I hope someone posts the 3rd segment soon. So great.

@Mike in NC:
Hell, its probably not bad for a guy who likes gals who like gals.

@Non-Existent Patricia:
They’re just afraid that in about 30 years they’ll be minorities as well, as almost every state in the country will have no racial / ethnic majority.

Reasonable, honest, smarter than anyone on TV, does her homework, and maintains a smile while lacerating the losers. Does everything Fred Astaire does, but backwards, and in…comfortable shoes.
Mike Goetz
And so a new consensus forms: Only Obama has anything to be embarrassed about in this situation. Read the next installment of “Beyond Left and Right” at Huffington Post for details.
Maybe Obama would be willing to fight more if he didn’t have a bunch of fairweather-friend bastards backing him up. He is always left on an island by his putative allies.
Paul E. Dare
Makes you wish you were a lesbian, not was.

Rachel is honestly one of the most amazing people I have seen on TV. I very rarely see her do what she did tonight to Fox News, but since they were such a big part of the story, it had to be told.
Malron aka eclecticbrotha
@Mike Goetz: This, like a muhfugga:
Obama’s presidency is often like watching “McHale’s Navy,” with him playing straight man while surrounded by a bunch of bumbling idiots. But, come to think of it, maybe its more appropriate to compare him to Rudolph being stranded on the Island of Misfit Toys. I dunno, its late and all my analogies are belong to suck right now.

@Hunter Gathers:
You got it. One of the nice things about Maddow’s piece is that she points out that the people pulling this stuff are not just racists, creeps or assholes.. they are pros.
Liberty60
Yeah, I was trying to find a word for straight-guy-crush-on-smart-lesbian, but it made my brain hurt.
She is spot on with her analysis, that the real story here is the breathless rush to embrace the “white oppression” meme that get endlessly pushed on Wingnuttia media.
It would be laughably silly except I noticed that was the exact strategy used by the Serbs in the Balkans, and the Hutus/ Tutsis in Rwanda, to justify their ethnic rage and slaughter.
This is vile stuff, the underlying fear and rage boiling in the Tea Party crowd.
Joe Buck
@Hunter Gathers: the target most emphatically was the NAACP. A few days ago, the NAACP called out the Tea Party for the racism in its ranks, and the wingnuts went crazy. Breitbart tried to do to the NAACP what he did to ACORN.

@Paul E. Dare: You wouldn’t recognize the subjunctive if I gave you an example.

@BR:
Ah, but they’re planning ahead. They’re already “strengthening” voter registration laws and demonizing groups that mobilize minority voters. They see the demographic shift and are already working to disenfranchise certain groups
FlipYrWhig
Is it just me, or is Laurence O’Donnell like the physical embodiment of the Huffington Post? They’re generally on the side of the angels but then every once in a while they spin off into accusations or innuendoes. And he’s picked up the Olbermann habit of asking questions that unwind for a long time until they’re likely to be longer than the interviewee’s responses. I don’t think I’ll be watching his MSNBC show.
BR
@Non-Existent Patricia:
Yeah, I remember a TPM story a week ago about some GOPer worried about how “they” are having babies here so in 30 years they’ll go on to threaten our way of life.

Right, the GOP platform is one state (Nevada?) actually contained a plank about amending the Constitution so that birth in the US did not grant automatic citizenship. How’s that for “framer’s intent”?

@Mike Goetz:
Sorry, but that goes beyond hyperbole. I’ve viewed and read a lot of responses today to this story and none that I came across said anything remotely like “only Obama has anything to be embarrassed about.”
I believe your so-called consensus is imaginary. While the administration certainly has egg on its face from its response to Breitbart’s latest (and Gibbs seems to have accepted that the WH deserves criticism), the real consensus seems to be that the only one who comes out of this smelling like a rose is Ms. Sherrod herself. Breitbart, the media generally, FoxNews specifically, the White House, and Vilsack all look bad. Actually, in all the things I’ve read, Obama has been either a minor character or subsumed under the “White House,” which can mean a number of things from Obama himself, to the administration, to White House staff, etc. As much as you may want to believe it, I really don’t think Obama is a victim here.

This video was a good accompaniment for the GM-China story, which it also has to be said that EW was on first.
Also today we have the heartwarming story of GM buying a subprime lender.
