Saw that video earlier this morning. So wrong, yet so very very right.

In this morning’s Times, Chunky Bobo expounds on “The Roots of White Anxiety.” Apparently, most of what is toxic in our politics today is the fault of the admissions and financial aid offices at elite universities, for not admitting enough working-class white kids.
Ohhhhhhh-kayyyyyyyyyy.

Oh Next Media Animation, you are so ridiculous awesome.
If there’s anybody who is focused and aimed like a ballistic missile at higher education, it’s working-class white kids.
Yes, that’s snark.
Perhaps it is different now; when I was a working class white kid, going to school with other working class white kids, I was a rare bird for even being on the “college track” of academics, much less actually going there.
Thanks for the heads up. The thrashing he is taking in the comments is a must read. I’m thinking Harvard might want to repo his sheepskin. What a maroon.

A little OT here, but did anyone see “Inception” this past weekend. I saw it on Saturday and thought it was great. While taking the T home, it was all I could think about, trying to figure it out.
It’s definitely going to require a second viewing; now that I know what I need to pay attention to.

I had tried to publish this comment last night when Douthat’s article was first posted, but it hasn’t been approved. I kinda don’t get it, it really isn’t meaner than the stuff that’s already up there, but whatever.
Well, a focus on “eight highly selective colleges and universities” doesn’t establish that affirmative action is one of the top 500 things afflicting “the downscale, the rural and the working-class” whites. Plus, even if this is happening at every single college the whole world ’round, it would seem to make more sense to resent the upper-middle-class whites who are getting those slots.
It seems to me that this study is a raindrop, while forces the other direction are a full force gale.
It would behoove conservative elites to push back against the rabble-rousers like Beck, and the liars like Mitch McConnell, who denies that the Bush tax cuts reduced revenue. *That* would do a great deal more to tamp down white resentment, and increase white economic outcomes, than pumping up studies of the tiny percentage of people who go to elite universities. That just wasn’t much of a factor to pretty much any Beck or Limbaugh listener (because they have large audiences, I mean).
As an actual Maroon (Ridgewood HS, class of 19xx), I deeply resent your attempts to make Chunky Bobo one of us. I’m sure the University of Chicago isn’t too happy with you, either.
The superintendent resigned in protest. A coalition of residents and civil rights groups filed suit. Months of rallies, news conferences and candlelight vigils against the feared “resegregation” of the state’s largest school district culminated in the recent arrests of four activists for refusing to vacate board members’ chairs.
I probably won’t, but if it comes up a lot in the comments, I will. His basic point is not dumb, but he takes it all too far.

@Yara #7: Saw it Saturday afternoon, same reaction. I will be seeing it again! Hope we can get a BJ discussion going once enough people have seen it.

@WereBear: In addition to that point, I wonder if don’t already have enough folks with elite degrees. Its not like that population has guided us to the promised land. In fact….
To me, it seems to be a misallocation of scarce resources, since an “elite” degree costs so much more then a good state school. Is society better off ‘purchasing’ one elite degree with the money needed to ‘purchase’ two state u diplomas?

I’ll write about this if people want. I don’t think CDB is *that* off base, but he makes some crazy leaps, as usual.
