In another step towards her inevitable victory in November, Senate candidate Sharron Angle says that pregnant rape/incest victims should make lemons out of lemonade instead of having an abortion:
Stock: What do you say then to a young girl, I am going to place it as he said it, when a young girl is raped by her father, let’s say, and she is pregnant. How do you explain this to her in terms of wanting her to go through the process of having the baby?
Angle: I think that two wrongs don’t make a right. And I have been in the situation of counseling young girls, not 13 but 15, who have had very at risk, difficult pregnancies. And my counsel was to look for some alternatives, which they did. And they found that they had made what was really a lemon situation into lemonade.
I think this is more of a “you can’t make chicken salad out of chickenshit” situation, but I’m a sinning, abortion-loving heathen.

So you’re saying that Sharon Angle doesn’t have a chickens for health care problem, she has a lemonade for rape victims issue?

Did you biff this on purpose, or am I unaware of more internet traditions?

On what fucking planet was another human being stupid enough and batshit crazy enough to seek counsel from this refried-beans-for-brains wacko?
Seriously, what has Angle done in the past that put her into contact with impressionable youth? What rape victims did she work with?
I think she’s a lying sack of shit. I seriously doubt this woman has ever counseled a rape victim. But who knows? Maybe she made a cottage industry of swooping down like a vampire on young women in bad situations.

I assume Angle isn’t advocating giving away that lemonade, so it must form part of her chicken-barter health-care system.

Yeah, and the solution is apparently to get both mother and baby adopted out to some family. Because there are just millions of childless families who are looking to buy their very own underage baby factory or something.
This is seriously her plan. All underage pregnant girls who are victims of incest must be adopted. Because she knows someone it happened to. Among her sample size of one unnamed and un-documented person, it’s very common that this happens with pregnant underage incest victims.
Now how this would work with adults who are victims of rape, she does not mention.

Well, thats nice of her. Does anyone bother to laugh in this woman’s face and ask why she gets to define an abortion as “wrong”?

Incredibly crass statement, but if you think a zygote is a person I don’t see why you would ever permit abortion, even for incest – but saying an early embryo is a person is necessarily pure theology.

Yes, but did they SELL the lemonade, or give it away for free?

It’s OK. You can forget about her.
She told the people of Nevada that Harry Reid should have let one of Nevada’s largest employers die rather than make a few phone calls on behalf of MGM’s troubled CityCenter project.

@debbie: Yes, well she’s given the voters every reason not to support for her, so if they do (and I’m still betting that they do), they’ll really have nobody but themselves to blame when they start drowning in lemonade.

Dammit, wish I’d seen your comment about WP’s moderation being triggered by a certain word central to this post when I was writing my comment.

If Angle thinks abortions are wrong, she should never get one. Her opinion on another woman’s decision is totally irrelevant. It is not her choice to make, or her life that will be impacted. I wish these goddamn busybodies would just apply their principles to their own lives and stop trying to impose them on everyone else.
Of course, you know what they say about wishes and horses and beggars and rides.

Then write a letter to the editor for every state and local newspaper you can think of. Maybe swing by her website and see if there’s a blog forum and post it there. Swing by Harry Reid’s website – ask it there.
Keep asking the question where and when you can. If you’re lucky, you might get enough other people asking it that it actually gets an answer.

Harry Reid needs an ad. One ad. Updated regularly, but the script right now could go something like this:
Sharron Angle thinks it’s wrong to save jobs because they’ll just be created elsewhere, including the 50,000 jobs at CityCenter.

Sharron Angle thinks we need to eliminate Social Security and Medicare.

If I can be charitable to Mrs. Angle, I think she was trying to provide a comforting metaphor that rape victims could find alternatives to abortion.
Mrs. Angle’s problems are that 1) she did a piss-poor job of communicating her position, which is a lousy thing you want in an elected leader and 2) rape victims shouldn’t be forced to carry pregnancies they never wanted (if there were ever a medical way to transfer a fetus from a rape victim to a rapist, I’d be all for it!).
Lirpa
Once again it appears there are no complete people on the ballet. Your choice is between one who has absolutely no heart or brain and the other who has no spine. I guess you go for the one who is missing only one body part and continue to have the Senate run by a wet noodle? Any other result is simply too horrifying, but is this is all we get to hope for?
PaulW
@Chat Noir:
This is a hodge-podge of talking points right there.
1) What does creating confidence in business have anything to do with paying down the federal deficits?
2) How does one “take back our economy.” Take it from whom, the Wall Street Bankers dictating policy to Obama’s White House?
Here’s how Mrs. Angle should have answered:
“We need to get businesses back to hiring people, and we do that by getting the banks back to loaning capital and getting financial markets to invest in companies that are expanding. We can get Congress to press for these loans with tax credits, and create encouragement to banks that federal deficit reductions will create solvency and ensure no more economic meltdowns. That should create jobs.”
There. Did that go anywhere against GOP talking points? Or was it too wordy?
wasabi gasp
Maybe Sharron finds the idea of a kid sitting behind a cardboard box scrawled with “Incest Rape Babies 10¢” to be a refreshing treat.

Consider the South Carolina senate campaign where the choice is between a corrupt teabagger elitist driving moderates out of the Republican Party faster than you can say “Rockefeller”, and an accidental primary winner awaiting felony charges who suffers seemingly from Aspergers and who refuses to campaign outside of his dad’s car garage. Leaving any sane person in SC rooting for the Green party candidate no one’s heard of.
Mark S.
@PaulW:
1) It’s a trite and insulting metaphor to a person who has undergone a traumatic experience.
2) Angle clearly doesn’t think there should be a rape exception, or any exception at all:
Manders: Is there any reason at all for an abortion?
Angle: Not in my book.

I saw this over at Benen’s place, and I think that giving a pregnant woman/girl ALL the options is a good idea. That being said, forcing ANY woman (especially a survivor of incest/rape) to carry out a pregnancy is criminal. There. I said it. It’s criminal. And, I call bullshit on Angle’s whole story, but even in giving it, she was able to dodge the real question: Why the fuck does she, someone who hates government, support full-governmental invasion into a private issue like pregnancy? Fucking bitch.
asiangrrlMN
FYWP. I can’t believe I made the same mistake as geg6 and Warren Terra after reading the whole thread.

People like Sharon Angle are the reason I don’t go to church anymore. I firmly believe that the overwhelming majority of self-identified Christians in this country actually worship Satan but are too stupid and deluded to realize it.
Chris Howard
While I completely abhor her position on forced pregnancy, I’m not sure why this position surprises people. I’m more surprised by anti-abortion advocates who allow for exceptions for rape and that other word. If you honestly believe that abortion is murder, you’re left with two horrible choices – force the woman to carry the baby to term and suffer the emotional trauma that brings or kill the baby. I would think all abortion opponents should come down on the side of saving the child, while acknowledging that there are no good choices in these situations. To do otherwise is to admit your position on abortion being murder is bullshit.
Now I don’t believe abortion is murder, and women in this horrific situation should absolutely have full control to decide what to do with themselves and the pregnancy.
Brachiator
It doesn’t bother me that Angle believes this. This is her business, and it probably is not out of line with some current religious teachings (e.g., I presume, the Catholic Church).
But I certainly don’t want to see this become public policy. And that’s where the fight is going to be. And any who previously supported Obama and the Democrats but who are now wavering should keep this in mind as mid-term elections come up. One of the last bulwarks of sanity are judicial appointments, and a big swing in the make up of the Senate in particular will only make things more difficult.

Why the hell are people surprised that idiots and demagogs are taking over the country while the populace sleeps? After all the main story in the news today that has the whole country on the edge of their sets is a decision that will be announced on a 1 hour special news program for a basketball player to a say where he will play next year.
