You know that scene in Reno 911 the movie when Lt. Dangle blew up a whale on the beach? That’s sort of what it feels like happened in my kitchen.
Enjoy the show. I’m going to be boiling my kitchen counters and floor.

I’m envisioning the seagulls from “Finding Nemo” peering in your kitchen window. “Mine? Mine? Mine! Mine! Mine!”

Dinner parties are fun but there is always the inevitable cleanup. Hope it doesn’t take too long to do.

@SiubhanDuinne: Oh lord, I hope not–would get kind of recursive in a bad way real quick: the boiling boiler boils himself…necessitating more boiling. And also skin grafts.

Very interesting, but where are the animal pics ? ?

Did Tunch enjoy the party?

Lobster killing/cooking/picking should really only be done outdoors at the beach. Inside it makes a huge mess which, in the aftermath, is disgusting. Just worth the deliciousness.
RedKitten
Yeah, dinner parties are a blast, but the cleanup always makes you swear off having another one.
That’s one thing I love about the fact that I have Christmas at my place for the whole fam-damily every year. My husband and I do all the cooking (except for dessert), and then all of my relatives make us sit on our butts and drink coffee & Bailey’s while they do all the cleanup. I’d say we get the better end of the deal.

I can semi-relate. I got up this morning to discover that my two grown sons (home for a month) made chocolate chip cookies last night. My kitchen looked like it exploded. Luckily, in an effort to pacify me, they left me three cookies, which I ate for breakfast with my coffee. Then I cleaned up the mess, as they knew I would. For a situation like yours, Mr. Cole, I recommend Clorox Clean-up in a spray bottle. it’s probably not environmentally correct, but it is extremely effective.

Damn it wrb, you beat me to it. :)

Wow, all that from one lobster?

I keep baking soda in a container with a shaker top and white vinegar in a spray bottle. Shake soda around like cleanser, spray with white vinegar until it hisses so loud you think it’s alive, wipe clean. Works on everything without much effort from me. Grease, no problem. Bathtub ring, poof, gone. Works miracles on stainless steel sinks – bright and shiny.

I’m impressed that reporter was pretty witty in the midst of all that. Funny situation. Stupid humans.
Skepticat
@TaMara (BHF): And absolutely the most fun, entertaining way to clean litter boxes, slow drains, and everything else. Of course rather than shaker and spray bottle, I use full boxes of soda and half gallons of vinegar for my volcanoes.
Rosalita
@TaMara (BHF):
thanks for that!!
WereBear
@TaMara (BHF): That sounds awesome. Sound effects even! I must try it.

@TaMara (BHF): What a great tip! Thanks.

Great tip, I must try that.. cuz you know I love stuff that sizzles.. it makes cleaning less boring :)

I’m glad several people went for Oregon Whale Explosion story. I remember that one getting passed around ten or twelve years ago when the Internet was still a set of tubes.
Sadly, as funny as that story was, and as dry as the reporter was, it’s a case study in how television journalism has completely changed (for the worse, IMO) in thirty years.
The fact that they shot on tape or film that had to be edited, as opposed to live satellite feeds, meant they had time to construct the story, edit the copy, and provide context. They had time, and viewers had patience.
Now, it’s all about what kind of instant live shot you can get RIGHT FUCKING NOW — even if it’s the currently inactive location of a previously active event.
Feelin’ a little old today. Damn. Still to early to +++.

@Skepticat:
That brings back memories of us making volcanoes outside with our kids. Pile up sand & gravel, make a hole & put the ingredients in it with some food color & watch the laba flow as the toddler called it. They had great fun doing that.

I have cooked a lot of lobster in my time, and I am always amazed at how something that tastes so good can smell so bloody awful the next day, cooking pot-wise. You really have to bite the bullet and clean the pots and dishes and take out the garbage that night, regardless of how many tequila shots you’ve had, or you will rue it in the morning.
I am still laughing at your “boiling the kitchen” remark :)

@TaMara (BHF):
Will that be OK with a septic system? I’ve never had one till we moved here, and I’m always worried about what to use to clean. Add to that the well water leaves the nastiest bathtub rings ever-if vinegar & soda will cut through it without giving me washerwoman’s elbow I’ll try it for sure!
muddy
I thought the point of having animals was making *them* clean kitchen messes. They don’t do many chores (you should have heard me discussing their laziness re: mowing this morning) but the ones they do, they do well. Then just rinse off the residual spit. Easy peasy!
Linkmeister
@TaMara (BHF): Oh, wow. If that cleans up my beautiful-but-scorched stainless steel Toastess hot tray I’ll be forever in your debt.
Corner Stone
@muddy: Alright, seriously.
After this post, and your recent “foie gras goose” comment, I have to DEMAND you submit a treatment to the networks for a Reality TV show centered round you and your family.

There’s always BonAmi — Ain’t Scratched Yet! Great cleanser, no bleach, but really scrubs. All good old fashioned ingredients.

Baking soda and white vinegar cleans all our stainless steel appliances like nothin’ else. With boiling water and a splash of bleach it’s also good for the toilet/nappy bucket/changing table.
Cole, if there’s one thing living above my parents’ restaurant for 11 years taught me, it’s this: always close the kitchen at night. I do like mom: no matter how late, no matter how drunk, make a cup of coffee and get stuff cleaned. Waking up to a pristine kitchen is worth the extra hassle last thing at night.
Brent
Since living in my RV since 03, I’ve done all my cooking outside on stainless steel tables. Cleanup is a breeze. Can’t imagine going back to the indoor nightmare. Plus no heat indoors in the summer (and I freeze my ass off in the winter). Camping year round. Highly reccomended.
henqiguai
@madmommy (#26): So, what’s a little 6 hour gap. Yeah, baking soda and vinegar are perfectly safe in your septic system (had one for years and loads of baking soda went down the drains and toilet – one of the reasons the septic cleanout guys quipped “Why don’t y’all use the damned system ?!” after the first cleanout in 8 years of use).
Happily, however, the town put in a sewer system for the section of town in which I reside; was really sweatin’ where to put a second system as the original wore out and ‘died’.
madmommy
@henqiguai:
Thanks! I figured, it not being bleach-based it would be fine. I wish they would run city services here, but it’s looking like several years at least. Between the crappy water pressure from the well and the stinky egg water…blech!

@Corner Stone:
Sorry, not much Reality here, that seems like too much work.

@muddy: But I simply MUST know what a family is like that it gets so bad, so often they have an actual saying for how you either keep eating shit or drown in it.
You can not deny me of this !
