Arizona Republicans will likely introduce legislation this fall that would deny birth certificates to children born in Arizona – and thus American citizens according to the U.S. Constitution – to parents who are not legal U.S. citizens.
Trueblood? Is that the series with the sparkly vampires with high school love interests?
You’re thinking of Vampire Diaries, which is on The CW, a not-cable network that caters to the ‘sixteen-year-old girls of all ages’ demographic. Trueblood is the R-rated cable version, aimed at an older (at least emotionally) audience.
Is it just me, or does the idea of a vampire falling in love with a human seem akin to a human falling in love with a steak?
I think of the literary vampire/human dynamic as more like the relationship between humans and horses. Plenty of horse-dependent tribes have been able to simultaneously laud, worship, develop intense one-on-one personal relationships with their horses even while using them as beasts of burden and nutritional support (cf the Golden Horde, or Alexander’s Bucephalus, or medieval knights). It’s probably not coincidental that in modern America young girls are the primary “defenders” of both mythic traditions…
@General Egali Tarian Stuck: I await your reviews. I was hooked after about the first 5 minutes. I was a Buffy fan, but more because of Joss Whedon than vampires. I’ve not watched any other vampire movie/show since. But at the urging of many, I got it from NF as well.
I know it's tempting to dismiss "The Vampire Diaries" as a Twilight ripoff for tweens but as someone who hasn't been 16 for 29 years, I have to admit I am hooked on it. It's not as raunchy and gory as TB but it's multi-layered, sexy and has a sense of humor. Kevin Williamson took the books and created this masterpiece. It's more like Dark Shadows, than TB or Twlight.

The United States has discovered nearly $1 trillion in untapped mineral deposits in Afghanistan, far beyond any previously known reserves and enough to fundamentally alter the Afghan economy and perhaps the Afghan war itself, according to senior American government officials.
__
An internal Pentagon memo, for example, states that Afghanistan could become the “Saudi Arabia of lithium,” a key raw material in the manufacture of batteries for laptops and BlackBerrys.
Lithium is also used in the batteries in hybrid cars.
Meh, I don’t know how big a deal this is. Arizona is the Saudi Arabia of copper.
It’s a lot like coal mining in WV. It’s an opportunity for big moneyed mining interests to come in and extract and exploit, but I don’t think you can say it does much for the people of Arizona, or West Virginia, other than provide rough blue collar jobs.
Example, Freeport McMoran, a worldwide mining giant, takes a lot of copper out of Arizona. But I don’t think a lot of that money stays in Arizona.
So …. lithium? It’s key, but what is the worldwide lithium production worth compared to copper? And how much of the money would stay in Afghanistan?

Wait. What?
I admit, I never saw coming a Balloon Juice-True Blood connection.
Old Anne Rice fan here. (Old, as in both she and me.)
Harris holds no candle to Rice, in terms of elegant vampire lore, but Sookie’s an easy, entertaining read.
Once a vampire lover always a vampire lover, so I got sucked into True Blood. (Bad pun totally intended. Sue me.) But I’m necessarily resigned to waiting for the season’s DVDs–cable is waaay scarier than any vampire.
(I only read Twilight series as part of a greater deed: my now 19yo daughter agreed to read my AR library if I read her Twilight. I learned that the only things more melodramatic than teenage girls are teenage vampires.)
Uh, yeah, the world is on the verge of War for Lithium Carbonate.
A couple of years ago, mounts of lithium salts in Chile were being exploited, and had driven the price of lithium carbonate (older mines) so low that these mines were being closed in favor of more lucrative brine-mining of vast deposits in South America.
In fact just a couple years ago they were calling Chile the Saudi Arabia of Lithium. Apparently the Saudi Arabia of Lithium thing is a portable label that is given out regularly, like the Worst Dressed awards in Hollywood.
Whatever. At least they didn’t discover pineapples in Afghanistan, right?
@debg: LOVE Spike. He was the reason I watched Buffy (and then Giles and Tara). I don’t have cable, but I am hesitant to get the series because I love the books. I probably will check it out one day.

Heh. These days, anything before 4 a.m. is early for me.
Unfortunately me too which is really bad since I am (a) trying to watch the 7:30 am World Cup games and (b) working in the office with my boss this week. I really need to go see my doctor to get a new prescription of sleep meds that begin with A (damn moderation).

@Yutsano: Steeplejack. When we were talking about identification. That was funny.

MattR
@asiangrrlMN: I bet if I take the rental car and drive north I will be able to find some.
@Yutsano: Best part was that I remember deciding that I needed to put the passport “somewhere obvious that I will remember”, I just couldn’t remember where that obvious place was.
@asiangrrlMN: I am pretty good about “los links” but we were talking about sleep habits and so the name of an “A” medication that I am out of just slipped out. (And of course I did not realize I went into moderation until it was too late to re-edit)

FH #1 is bragging again. Can we rub today’s futbol score in?
@MattR: And, it used to be footwear was also verboten, but no more! I can say shoesssss all I want. By the way, does “A” make you groggy after you wake up? Have you ever tried “L”? I’m getting kinda desperate with my sleep right now.
And, if you bring me back snow (or at least take a picture of it), I will haz a happy!
66.
Yutsano
@asiangrrlMN: Well, any though of me possibly going to sleep any time soon has been countermanded by my orange overlord furball. He’s sprawled on my lap commanding attention. I think my only saving grace is I haz food for him.
@Yutsano: Yes. We must do as our fuzzy overlords demand of us. My mom says I spoil my boys, and I say, “Why not?” It takes so little to make them happy. The only thing I will not do is lick their butts–that’s what they have each other for.
68.
Yutsano
@asiangrrlMN: I do not touch the anus, regardless of how much they might command that I do so. They’ll get over it since I supply the vittles on a semi-regular basis. I’ve even been known to crack the occasional can of tuna.
EDIT: He released me, so I am now free to move about the cabin.
“Make hand motions towards the galley…”
Night y’all.
69.
MattR
@asiangrrlMN: That is a hard question to answer since I am not a morning person and am groggy in the morning no matter what happened the night before. In fact, for a time I was taking something else to help me get “up” in the morning. I don’t think it made me any more groggy than without. The real problem was if I had to get up 4-5 hours after taking the pill. OTOH, occassionally I would crash hard for 3-4 hours then wake up with a bit of insomnia, but I had that same problem with NyQuil. Never tried the other kind so I can’t speak to that.
It was also a bit of a fun high if you took one then tried to stay awake. There is about a 30 minute period as it kicks in where you literally cannot walk straight.
If you really want snow that badly, I bet you can get in a car, drive north and find it about as quickly as I will be able to from Toronto. But I will see what I can do. Can the picture be of snow that has long since melted?
@Yutsano: Heh. “Touch the anus” has a nasty ring to it. Agreed. As long as I keep them steadily supplied with crack smoked salmon, they are happy cats. Ooooh, I was gonna make a ‘touch the galley’ crack. Great minds and all. Night!
@MattR: I am groggy all the time, too. However, the few sleeping aids I’ve tried have made it so that I can’t wake up at all. Apparently, Asian people break down drugs differently than do Caucasians (we need much smaller doses), and my doc didn’t know that. I have never tried the two big commercial sleeping pills, but I may.
Snow: I’m just teasing ya. I can wait four more months for snow. (And, no. It has to be proper snow).
Well, any though of me possibly going to sleep any time soon has been countermanded by my orange overlord furball. He’s sprawled on my lap commanding attention. I think my only saving grace is I haz food for him.
I already miss my Ellie. Been a weird day and a half in the apt without her. I was making tuna and almost dropped a few bits on the floor for her out of habit before I remembered she was in the kennel (which at least she seems to love)
@MattR: I was going to offer you condolences until you added the last part. I am glad Ellie is still with us, even if she is not physically with you at the moment. Any pics?
Filmed partially in Seattle! (The country bar, at least.)
The company that made this is a few minute walk away from me :3

MattR
@asiangrrlMN: No recent pics. The last one I took was actually posted here (the second pic). I need to take some new ones when I get back. And I have been meaning to type up and send John her rescue story – the six year Ellieversary is June 19.
I guess I just wasn’t expecting such a development for such a major character so early in the season. On the other hand, I see at imdb that he’s scheduled for all 20 episodes this season, so …
And sadly, I’m sure that she will remember his taking the earbuds out and not what he said. Oh, how Treme broke my heart last night.
I will hold out a little hope that he’s just running away from his responsibilities and was saying goodbye to New Orleans for a bit, maybe. But the ending of The Awakening has the protagonist swimming out into the Gulf to meet her fate. And a line from the first chapter caught my eye when I looked it up: “Mr. Pontellier had the privilege of quitting their society when they ceased to be entertaining.” For Creighton, it was he that had ceased to be entertaining. And New Orleans was only a ghost to him.
However, it must be said that Darlene had the line of the evening last night (serial killers), brilliantly delivered and utterly what True Blood is all about.

When I saw that George Pelecanos had a writing credit for the episode, I knew something bad/sad was coming. He wrote all of the penultimate episodes for The Wire.
@Joseph Nobles: Back in college, I wrote a lit paper on water symbolism in “The Awakening.” It was such a chore that I’ll never, ever forget it. So, even though I felt a sick pit in my stomach early in the ep about what Creighton was going to do, it was his lecture to his class that pointed out rather clearly how he was going to do it.
I agree with what Tom Hilton said… there’s been some foreboding in Creighton’s story arc the last few weeks, and I kind of sensed that he’d meet his demise by the end of the season; I just thought maybe it would be more natural, somehow. Either way it still felt like a gut punch.
@Zuzu’s Petals: It doesn’t seem like David Simon’s style to pull a Bobby Ewing kind of stunt, but I guess you never know. I, for one, hope that what we think we saw last night was just that.

Yutsano
@MattR: And certain game establishments, plus games played at said establishments. Hell I got moderated once doing a Terry Pratchett quote. And it’s one of my faves too.
@asiangrrlMN: I’m getting this close to going the enhanced sleep route. I’m running out of other ideas/options. I just keep waking up. It’s driving me meschugnah.
FH #1 is bragging again. Can we rub today’s futbol score in?
asiangrrlMN
@MattR: And, it used to be footwear was also verboten, but no more! I can say shoesssss all I want. By the way, does “A” make you groggy after you wake up? Have you ever tried “L”? I’m getting kinda desperate with my sleep right now.
And, if you bring me back snow (or at least take a picture of it), I will haz a happy!
Yutsano
@asiangrrlMN: Well, any though of me possibly going to sleep any time soon has been countermanded by my orange
overlordfurball. He’s sprawled on my lap commanding attention. I think my only saving grace is I haz food for him.asiangrrlMN
@Yutsano: Yes. We must do as our fuzzy overlords demand of us. My mom says I spoil my boys, and I say, “Why not?” It takes so little to make them happy. The only thing I will not do is lick their butts–that’s what they have each other for.
Can the picture be of snow that has long since melted?
asiangrrlMN
@Yutsano: Heh. “Touch the anus” has a nasty ring to it. Agreed. As long as I keep them steadily supplied with
cracksmoked salmon, they are happy cats. Ooooh, I was gonna make a ‘touch the galley’ crack. Great minds and all. Night!@MattR: I am groggy all the time, too.
MattR
@Yutsano:
I already miss my Ellie. Been a weird day and a half in the apt without her. I was making tuna and almost dropped a few bits on the floor for her out of habit before I remembered she was in the kennel (which at least she seems to love)
asiangrrlMN
@MattR: I was going to offer you condolences until you added the last part. I am glad Ellie is still with us, even if she is not physically with you at the moment. Any pics?
maus
@Bad Horse’s Filly:
Filmed partially in Seattle! (The country bar, at least.)
The company that made this is a few minute walk away from me :3
MattR
@asiangrrlMN: No recent pics. The last one I took was actually posted here (the second pic). I need to take some new ones when I get back. And I have been meaning to type up and send John her rescue story – the six year Ellieversary is June 19.
asiangrrlMN
@MattR: Ooooh! You have the Lily lookalike! Sweet. You definitely have to send in the story for Ellie’s adoptoversary!
OK. I’m fading. Have a good trip tomorrow. Hope you get a few hours sleep.
Night to any other night owls/morning larks hanging around.
Zuzu's Petals
Tonight’s Treme ending: Whaaa … ??
Did NOT see that coming.
JenJen
@Zuzu’s Petals: You know, as soon as Creighton told his daughter how pretty she looked that morning, I just knew what he was gonna do.
:-(
Tom Hilton
@Zuzu’s Petals: Really? Been expecting it for the last 2-3 episodes. Still a punch in the gut.
Zuzu's Petals
@JenJen: @Tom Hilton: `
I guess I just wasn’t expecting such a development for such a major character so early in the season. On the other hand, I see at imdb that he’s scheduled for all 20 episodes this season, so …
Joseph Nobles
@JenJen: That was when I knew it, too.
However, it must be said that Darlene had the line of the evening last night (serial killers), brilliantly delivered and utterly what True Blood is all about.
andrea
When I saw that George Pelecanos had a writing credit for the episode, I knew something bad/sad was coming. He wrote all of the penultimate episodes for The Wire.
Bad Horse’s Filly:
Scoot over on that bench.
JenJen
Zuzu's Petals
@JenJen:
It would seem sort of pinche, I suppose. It just seems sort of hard to envision the Toni Bernette storyline without Creighton.
Derek
@El Cid:
Nice.
Derek
@Zuzu’s Petals:
Uh, what? Treme is not going to have a 20-episode season.
