Thank you for the open thread, even if I’m about to go to bed and even if it’s just me talking to the empty air. I was waiting all night for this, and now, I find I have nothing else to say. Oh well. Night, all!
I am up early, wakened by the early morning soap opera that takes place every day outside our apartment building because we’re one of the few that keeps its lights on all night. I guess I should be grateful. Today, I got to sleep as late as 5:30, when often the streetlight people start up at oh, 2AM (holiday weekend for everyone, I guess). Also, I realize I should stop worrying about censoring my language when the baby comes, as, due to the repetitive nature of the live soap opera, the kid’s first words are likely to be “fucking whore.”
So I got that going for me.

Early morning or late night?

Two things I noticed from yesterday’s political talk shows:
In one, David Brooks claimed that the Sestak story was nothing out of the ordinary. There was nothing about it that was illegal or unethical, he admitted, nothing at all. It was what goes on all the time in politics. But, he concluded, all of the criticism of Obama and the White House about it was warranted because Obama had promised to not be ordinary. And he added that this was “arrogant” that Obama had done so.
In another, George Will said that Obama couldn’t possibly plug the oil leak, that it was a ridiculous assumption people were making that Obama could somehow wave a magic wand, or scream loud enough, or emote, and that it would stop the oil.
But, Will concluded, this is Obama’s fault, because of his attitude since taking office that the federal Government could do anything, which had convinced everyone in just the last year or so that it was true (presumably including all of the conservatives who are screaming that it’s Obama’s fault I guess) which George Will called “arrogant”.
I can conclude from this only that we need to swap the words “arrogant” and “uppity” and insist they all use the latter, at least for the duration of this Presidency, since it’s clearly what they mean.

Morning all.
I see we have another one of Israel’s excellent adventures to deal with this morning.
Gah, I wish we had a government that would tell them to blow it out their ass. Tell them no more aid until you get your shit together.
@Bill E Pilgrim: In my fantasies, Brooks is busted down to the median income, and discovers what Living As Men is all about.
George Will should become allergic to everything but jeans and strappy T’s.
I’m surprised neither of them has thrown their back out with all the contorting going on. But they have practice: the contorting trying to make W look sane and sensible was even harder.
I’ve often wondered why newspapers still have columnists. Sure, most of them are fine, if a bit mediocre, but even the great ones aren’t absolutely necessary. I am not sure how much someone like Friedman makes. This lists his salary as $300,000, but is that from books and other stuff or purely from The Times? If it’s the latter, that’s astonishing. Sure, he gets a premium because he’s writing for what is still considered the most important real estate in the world, but still, his salary could easily mean an additional two to four reporters. I don’t have anything against him–he seems smart and well intentioned, even if he does have glaring issues with simplification–but it seems insane to pay someone that much money for opinions when they are a dime a dozen and some areas of reporting need expertise now more than ever.
I caught a few seconds of Fox News Sunday yesterday when Lizzie Cheney was on. Lizzie was bitching about Obama going on vacation. This is Lizzie Cheney the daughter of Dick Cheney who is probably 80 percent responsible for the oil spill disaster. The same Dick Cheney who is the former CEO of Haliburton. That just takes an enormous amount of chutzpah. If I had been in Juan Williams chair. I would have bitchslapped Lizzie so bad, she would have gone running home to mommy and daddy.
Then I heard the James Carville crack about how WJC would have been in a wetsuit. Perhaps Carville needs to look into his own domestic arrangement at home and have a nice long talk with Mary Matalin since she worked with Dick Cheney when he was busy pushing all kinds of deregulatory stuff into the energy bill. Maybe Mary Matalin is the one that needs to be in that wetsuit. Did Carville say anything to dear darling Mary about the fragile coastlands when she was working with Dick on deregulation or was he just running to the bank with all the money they were making? Next time, Mary Landrieu votes against an income tax increase, perhaps somebody will remind her of all the federal tax dollars have gone to her precious Louisiana.
Not much to add except I really appreciate the musical theater-centric videos of the last few days, especially when it is Kander & Ebb or Sondheim. Thanks, Anne!

I’ve always loved that line, but haven’t yet become disillusioned enough with life (and politics) to have it apply to all of it.
I’ve been tending mine the past two days. Today I relax with family. Mmmmmmmm…….barbecue!
I LOVE Assassins. It’s not quite as good as Sweeney Todd or Into the Woods, but that’s like saying Hamlet isn’t quite as good as Macbeth or Much Ado About Nothing. Sondheim is a god.

“Sondheim is a god.” Hm . . . my wife and I just celebrated a tenth anniversary by seeing a show that makes just that point. Found it very moving.

Ugh. I woke up to the smell of smoke a few moments ago. Fortunately, the source wasn’t inside my house, but somewhere in Quebec.

The thread last night about Christopher Hitchens and his occasional breath of air that he mixes in with his drinking was hysterical.
