So the Westboro Baptist pukes came to WV to trample all over the memory of the 29 coal miners we lost, and they received a rowdy reception:
Other states might stage peaceful counter-protests or sing songs about unity, but you pricks come to WV spewing your bile and we’ll follow you around making large farty sounds and have our rednecks with mullets and big dips of Copenhagen scream bible verses at you while threatening you and telling you to get back home. Get your weak shit out of here.
That’s just how we roll here. And this was nothing compared to Game Day. At least here, everyone was sober.

Please note what their ultimate goal is with these protests –they are praying that somebody assualts them or somehow breaks teh law in the course of the counter-protest, and then they sue the fucking shit outta that person. Almost everyone in that inbred group is a lawyer. And they know exactly what they’re allowed to do and the counter-protesters are not….

When they showed up here in the hallowed halls of academia (because we unleashed the unholy terror of B’rack Ob-ama unto the world), they were greeted by a combination of jeering fratboys (yes, we have some) and people holding up signs saying “God hates shrimp”. And a whole line of cops, both city and university, making sure that nobody got close enough to take a swing at them and provoke a lawsuit.

I for one would like to see a smack down of Fred Phelps. Seriously – make it a pay per view event and donate all the proceeds to the families he’s screwed with. 500 at Drake counter gay-
marriage protesters
By CLARK KAUFFMAN • [email protected] •
April 11, 2010
A family of six carrying signs that read “God hates
fags” faced more than 500 counter-protesters
singing “All You Need Is Love” on the Drake
University campus early Saturday.
…
The family of Fred Phelps, founder of the
controversial Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka,
Kan., was in Des Moines to picket the university for
hosting a symposium on same-sex marriage.
Waving signs that read, “Fags are beasts” and “God
hates Jews,” the Phelps family assembled on the
south side of University Avenue at 7:40 a.m., while
the counter-protesters – for the most part – stayed
on the north side with signs that read, “Drake rejects
hate” and “My God loves everyone.”
The Westboro contingent included Sara Phelps, 28,
and two of her cousins, ages 9 and 13, both of
whom were wearing sweatshirts emblazoned with
“JewsKilledJesus.com.”

It’s good – not as good as a ‘family BBQ’, with the Phelps family as the ‘guests of honor’, but it’s a start.

I knew this church basically consisted of Fred Phelps’ family, but I didn’t realize these assholes made their children carry hate signs for them. One little girl looked like she was about 4 years old.

Dispassionately, they’re a family of grifters who’ve figured out that playing the RELIGION! ! ! card lets them get away with crap that would otherwise get them jailed. As others have said, the Phelps show up to harrass groups of innocents into attacking them, so that they can sue for damages. That’s how the Phelps make a living — harrassing people. If they weren’t using an only-slightly-exaggerated form of Wholesome American Xtianity(tm) as their “assault weapon”, Fred Phelps and his core kinfolk would have been institutionalized long ago, and the rest of the tribe would have moved on to pigeon drops and phishing scams. Calling them cultists is an insult to those cultists who actually believe in the crap they peddle; Phelps and his unfortunate spawn are just using the First Amendment to suck money out of innocents in an unusually
creativebelligerent fashion.JGabriel

A few years ago, the Westboro circus came to Massachusetts, to protest high school graduations in cities and towns that had gay-straight alliances in their high schools.
First, they went to Lexington, where they were met by Lexingtonian counter-protesters, who stood on the Town Common and then, with great and somber dignity, turned as one and silently stood with their backs to the Fred Phelps activists. I think this choice of response tells us a great deal about the good people of Lexington.
Then, they came to Lowell. When the Lowell Police Department (who understand their city’s populace very well) heard about this, they places a row of police with riot gear facing the protesters, then a six-foot chain link fence, then another six-foot chain link fence, and then another row of police with riot gear facing the much larger group of counter-protesters. I think that this, too, tells us a great deal about the people of Lowell.

@Tara the antisocial social worker: Absolutely. The WBC crew does not care a bit about the counter protests or the vitriol shouted at them. If anything they seem to get off on it (check out the woman about 1 min in). The only problem is that, as Anne Laurie stated above, these people don’t actually care about the things they claim to represent so I am not so sure that they will care if a local GLBT group gets money as long as the WBC group gets attention.

Yes, I was thinking they deserve something more like several people with boomboxes, playing different different variants of noise all at the same time, i.e.: John Zorn’s Naked City on one box, one of Glenn Branca’s guitar symphonies on another, several others playing the skronkiest pieces from Yo La Tengo, Pavement, etc., a couple more playing Swedish death metal, and finally, four boxes playing The Flaming Lips Zaireeka, because you need a minimum of four to play it properly anyway. All simultaneously.
Sure, you’d need a crew of old punks, alt-DJ’s, and avant-gardists to pull it off, since no one else could stand the caterwaul (which is EXACTLY the point), but I’d be up for it, and I’m sure I’m not the only one.

Well, the government that does least, governs best.
Bruce (formerly Steve S.)
Even when I disagree with a religion’s conclusions (i.e. all of them) I can usually understand the internal logic. I understand why a large organization would want to cover up endemic child abuse. I can even understand why an individual might think that flying an airplane into a skyscraper could further his religious agenda. But I’ve always had a hell of a time, pardon the expression, trying to wrap my head around Westboro Baptist’s thinking. Their god’s actions just don’t make any damned sense, not even by the standards of the genocidal maniac of the Old Testament.

If their aim is to be notorious they’re doing a great job. Everyone knows Fred Phelps and Westboro. There are only a few of them but they get enormous media attention wherever they go. Imagine if all of that energy and talent was directed at something positive instead of the most vile sort of hatred. But that’s just a DFH talking…
Donald G
@donnah:
No matter what the laws on assault and battery say, in Southern West Virginia, the default solution is often, in the words of the locals, “a good ass-kickin'”.
Phelps might press charges, Phelps might win a judgment, Phelps might even win damages, but he’d be unlikely to collect those damages in West Virginia. “When you ain’t got nothing, you ain’t got nothing to lose.” (See, there’s that Appalachian fatalism again.)
Given local history, if there’s anyplace in the country where Phelps’s antics might succeed in provoking violence, it’s West Virginia. I don’t think “God loves dead miners” would go over particularly well in Mingo and Logan Counties.
Down and Out of Sài Gòn
I really, really, disagree, John. I think the video shows the high level of courtesy displayed by your average West Virginian. Not one punch thrown? Bloody hell.
I’m trying to imagine how one of those “Thank God for Dead Miners” would go down after your average mining disaster in Thatcher’s UK. Back then, just being a scab laborer would earn you a few rocks in your direction, if you were lucky and the striking miners couldn’t get their hands on you. Someone walking around praising industrial accidents? Euugh.

MattR – I have no idea if they actually care about the gay stuff or if they just want attention. I’m inclined to think the gay hatred is real, just because GLBT people were a less sympathetic target when Phelps & company started their wacko protests a couple of decades ago. Back then, they’d have had a better chance at notoriety by attacking Jews or Presbyterians or something. But who knows what goes on in such sick minds?
Still, a Phelps-a-thon turns a crappy situation into a net positive for a worthy cause, so that and massive ridicule are the best response I can think of.
Tara the antisocial social worker
Of course Pat Robertson doesn’t harass gay people at funerals. A hurricane might hit him!

The Phelps’ are basically a very small, very specialized crime family. They have one shtick: behaving in a particularly abhorrent fashion, in the hopes that someone will attack them. Then they sue for damages. They target funerals because people in deep grief are less likely to be able to control themselves.
They recently won such a case against a municipality that banned their presence, getting about $20,000.
They’re probably subsidized by some deep-pocketed RW sponsor and the lawsuit money is gravy.

Stop reporting on them and they’ll stop doing their little inbred protests.

MarkJ, Let me give this a shot: Pat Robertson’s theology is more or less what one sees in some of the nastier prophets or epistles: “God is showing you what He can do, so you’d better shape up lest He keep on punishing you.” Yes, 9/11 happened because we weren’t oppressive enough, and God’s giving us a chance to get our repression on. D’Souza and Falwell (whose funeral the WBC picketed) are on the same wavelength.
As Shirley Phelps-Roper has explained, the WBC’s “hate-based Christianity” does not seek to proselytize, since its Calvinist principles tell its adherents that they’re the only ones who’ll ever be saved. Their public antics, unlike Robertson’s, don’t purport to be about changing anyone’s mind or conduct: they’re just celebrating the fact that they’re saved and we’re damned. Your usual fundy may think s/he’ll get to do that once s/he’s in Heaven; the WBC is all about not waiting.
maus
@CaseyL:
Why do they need to be? Their operation doesn’t cost very much to run. They only need to pay for a few plane tickets, fast food, and a motel room for a night.

that was … heartwarming.
MattR
@Keith G: I had this same thought initially. But from what I understand about the Phelpses, not only would they sue the individual who broke the law but they would go after anyone who might be condsidered an organizer of a counter protest, law enforcement authorities and any other entity that is even tangentially related. The goal is to get a financial settlement from one or more of those entites that they sue, not to win the lawsuits themselves (and apparently they dont have that great a record if the defendant does not blink)
